Thank, I thought about the marine plywood as a backer but I did not want water to get trapped, I also was concerned about how the wood would contract and expand as the weather changed. I kind of did it this way in case I needed to change a piece out I did not have to pull the whole assembly.

yes.. I too do a few projects with out or very little power tools but do not see the advantage in abandoning them all together. But good point about non power tools as it can be very rewarding also time consuming.
Thats also true if you are at a yard like that but most sawmills and HARDWOOD specific lumber yards in my area tend to know and talk in these terms. But good advice.
