PVC Post

Hi, I'm a soccer coach.  I'd like to make some inexpensive posts to serve as obstacles/markers that I can use indoors.  I have 5' pvc pipe, but can't seem to locate or concoct something to hold the posts upright both affordably and that aren't too wide to get in the way of the players or the soccer ball.  Ideally, I'd have something that is only a few inches wide with a 3/4" hole in the center to hold my 3/4" pvc.   Thus far, the best thing I can come up with are a few 2.5/5lb thick plastic weight plates where the center hole happens to be just about 3/4" wide.  Those seem to quite difficult to come by though!  The next closest thing I've found were either heavy steel flanges or rubber mounts specifically designed to hold plastic posts.  At $8 or more/each though, I was hoping to find something a little less expensive. Anyone have any ideas?

Making Copper (II) Chloride From Acid and Copper

Ok, so last 4th I made fireworks for a small- and I mean small- display, and it turned out fairly well. I only had two complaints- a) It wasn't that colorful, as I was only using pine and palm charcoal for color: reddish orange.b)it wasn't electrical, and took alot of visco, as I wanted everything to go off near-instantaneously. Well, I am going to solve problem b by getting e-matches off of Skylighter, but solving a is a little harder. Then, I read that certain copper compounds could be added to create a green to green-blue color in the flame. Well, I like that idea, but I didn't know where to get the copper compounds. So I kinda left it. UNTIL TODAY!I found this page on making copper (II) chloride. Well, it seemed straightforward enough, so I was going to try it. I was only wondering about two things:a) why on the description on this page about it include hydrogen peroxide, but the page does not even mention it?b)is this safe? I guess I should be outside for the hotplate part- I can't imagine boiling/simmering HCI, inside.c) is this even possible? Does it: 1)create a form of copper that could be used with success in pyrotechnics? 2)create copper chloride at all?Any answers are appreciated. Even if they don't directly pertain to the topic, POST ANYWAY! Makes it more interesting.

can you help identify kite parts

I wondered if anyone could help me identify some kite parts.  I won a huge lot at the local auctions including literally thousands of kite making parts. (I have a lot more not imaged here) Unfortunately, I have little experience with kites and the scale of the volume I have acquired is a little daunting. So I thought I would ask the experts for help :) So far I think I have managed to identify the following: 22,000 4mm end caps 6,000 3mm spar/eap 1500 i think small douge (the yellow things that look a bit like bullet casings .. they could also be end caps but i am completely without a clue on this one) 500 rubber bands 6,000 5mm end caps 3,000 6mm end caps 8,000 3mm rubber gromets Tones of name tags I know there are a number of notched end caps I think the curved bits of plastic were 3 rods can attached are called dihedrals. 65 kites The fabric parts of around 10 large kites made by greens of Burnley (a lot of them branded as the pioneer range) I haven't measured but im guessing around 9ft across I think the lot originally came from Greens of Burnley who are no longer trading but I have found their archived site https://web.archive.org/web/20060818054031/http://www.greenskites.com/spares.asp If you could help by identifying some of the parts/ what the pioneer range of kites is possibly a place where I can sell some of the kit (there's far to much for me to work with here) I would be relly grateful :) PS ill put up more photo's if anyone is interested.  PPS I have just found some info on the Greens of Burnley kites http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Vintage-CODY-War-Kite-1-GREENS-KITES-Greens-of-Burnley-Large-Frame-Box-/401079737121 PPPS I found the original image I think I have a few boxers from the range. http://www.kitelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Kite-Lines-v7-3.pdf

What is the strangest looking insect you ever encountered?

Here around me the summer is on the way! This not only means a never ending supply of mozzies but also that after a bit of rain you have a concert every evening. If you ever saw a game of soccer you know the sound of the whistle the referee uses - it is painful at close range. Now imagine you relax in your garden and right next to your chair exactly this sound comes out of the ground! Of course if you are like me and it happend during a holiday the first time you might want to investigate. But once you move the sound stops, if it starts again and you are careful you will find a small hole in the ground that seems to be the outlet of a small speaker LOL The really hard part is to actually get the thing producing the sound, I tried many times and out of ten I usually only get two out of the ground. Was too lazy so I borrowed the pic from this website, which has a lot more info on the insect in question too. What you get out of the ground looks like a cloning experiment gone wrong. A maggot like body with legs, under-developed wings (they make the noise) and a head like something from your latest horror movie. To top it all up you also get a lobster like claw that is surprisingly powerful. Fun fact: The numph of the cicada is considered to be the loudest insect of earth, reaching up to 130 decibles at the hole! And because you might think all ugly babies will be be beautiful once grown up I just say that mum and dad would not win and beauty competition either LOL Stick insects are cool, these creatures are just out of this world! What have you encountered that is weird enough to post?

"Boy's Life" Archives

Common topics: "trapped in quicksand" or " when the cave collapsed" or "the chemistry set explosive went off in his hand!!" But there was so much more, like how to make stuff with sticks, rope and knots. So much of my kidhood was howto based on scout stuff. I'm tryin to figure out how to paste  pics from the mag at the above link.

Wood gasifiers and safety - Carbon Monoxide poisoning - hospital

Sorry if it is in the wrong section of the forum. If it can be moved to a better place then do so. This is a quick mention to anyone that is playing around with any burners such as:    wood gas generator    bio-gas    wood gasifier    'hobo' stove I am not severely concerned but it did happen, I think it needs a mention, as it is for everyone's safety. After playing with wood gas and attempting methanol creation from a small gasifier unit for a few weeks, I had started to realize that each day I had a most annoying headache / migrane in my frontal area of my brain / head. They ended up getting so bad that my body could not tolerate them anymore and started to go into shock, causing a rather painful, endless throwing up session for many hours each time even.  It came to a point where after 3 weeks of playing with a bio-gas generator for about 4 hours a day had started to lead me into temporary blindness an hour and a half at a time. This was when I was concerned as I could not read any more instructables :( After a quick jot to the local doctors, I explained what I had been up to and I was correct. I had given myself the rather classic, and very close to death, carbon-monoxide poisoning where my doctor insisted I go to emergency at the hospital ( 2 hours away ) immediately and have someone else drive me. Pretty much equivalent to staying inside a garage with your car running for 5 hours, all the doors closed. I was very close to severe carbon monoxide poisoning and death.  At the hospital, blood was taken, analysed, and they had discovered large traces of C02 that they attempted to flush with some oxygen, but this only works to a point and they mentioned that nothing else could be done apart from telling me not to use or be near any smoke sources for at least 3 weeks and I should recover fine. I am still playing with my wood gas generators, and attempting to make methanol, but these days, after 3 days ago, I take further safety precautions to make sure it wont happen again. Such as: ventilation / exhaust fan ( I WAS OUTSIDE WHEN I WAS POISONED! DONT TAKE THIS LIGHTLY! ) keep a distance, find a better way to ignite / extinguish the burner keep your face and body out of the smoke dont watch the flames / smoke from above for any longer than 2 seconds do not taunt the Criosote by-product of wood. I am not sure which is more toxic. The smoke or this.   ( criosote / bio-crude, whatever you want to call it, it is the condensate of the burner unit containing more chemicals, very stinky) do not store criosote indoors withough a sealable container ( the smell likes to soak into things, like my kitchen ) if you know what you are doing, keep oxygen tank nearby use all protective clothing and masks, etc. There was a small arrogance in my head when playing with these units. And that is simply that I was thinking 'it is just smoke'. Wood gas generators are generating a much more toxic smoke than just sitting around your camping fire and should not be considered to be something to play with, without proper valves, pipes, burn off points etc. It contains on some scale: carbon-monoxide, methane, acids ( acetic ), tar and many other defects that will cause you issues if you are not careful. Keep it safe guys, this was a rather difficult one for explination, but I do not want someone other than me to be in that same sickness / position as I was with the poisoning, as it is the most painful experience I had yet had.  Worse than me hitting a tree head on at 80km/h. Worse than falling 2 stories off a cliff onto rocks. Worse than being hit by a car and thrown over it's windscreen. Worse than the feeling of an unsuccessful home made rocket launch. All of these above I have had happen to me, and the poisoning was by far the worst and I was scared more for my life than than any above accidents. It is not a very nice feeling, it is a deathly, sickly, useless feeling, blindness is not far away from death if found in this situation. Oxygen / fresh air is the only thing to help you if poisoned, even if in hospital. Keep it safe guys. If you want me to write up a full on poster on wood-gas / wood-heater safety I can or even just a propper write - up on general safety with this smoke and the wood gas units etc. Ask please and I will. Hospital staff will most likely give you 'items of interest' for instructables if you just ask them too. I have a heap of things from a stethoscope to vials to 'red dots' for homemade ECG machines. They tend to like crazies like me that make weird stuffs .. i hope ive gotten the point across anyway.

Non Permanent Grass Dog Area

I recently moved into a rental home that has no grass, rocks only.  My two large dogs are used to having a grass yard, so I am looking for a way to make them a raised bed-type grass area that I can deconstruct when I move in two years.  I'm thinking a wood frame with a plywood bottom, fill it with topsoil then adding sod on top of that.  The only problem is that I would like it to be fairly large, at least 25' X 25'.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.   (Sorry the photo is weird, it was taken through a screened porch.)

What did Google Maps cameras discover over a lake in Switzerland?

Google Maps have been taking "street view" images for a number of years now, and they've captured some interesting things... In this case, there's a ghostly figure that appears over a lake in Switzerland. If you want to see it with your own eyes, go to Google Maps.   Copy and paste these coordinates for the location: 47.110579, 9.227568   Zoom in until you are in street view.   Then look to the sky (North-West over the lake). Was this just a strange camera anomaly? or something more divine?

Pen + sprinkler = get out of school free!

I will not be as descriptive or dramatic in this story as I was in my last. Last year, someone in my class made a small elastic gun that shot pens and pencils. Someone, who shall remain nameless, was screwing around during LA class trying to get a pen stuck in the ceiling with it. Whats the one thing you hit if you aim at the cieling and miss? A sprinkler. Black, smelly fluid (I know, black? wtf?) sprayed out everywhere as everyone in class eight one was screaming. Within seconds, the school alarm system was activated, and the entire school (~1000 students) was evacuated. 1/4 of the school was flooded, as were 4 computers. (Nameless) did get caught and was suspended from school for ~1 week. We got the rest of the day off school. If you can hit a sprinkler with one of these weapons, and activate it, It's basically a good way to get out of school free. You must have tremendous aim though. Someone with knowledge in the field of sprinkler systems said that (nameless) was extremely lucky that he did not set off every sprinkler in the school, which probably would have gotten us out of school for a week. (and got him suspended for the rest of the year, if he were caught) remember, aim between the red part and the metal part.

Horror Work 1 He'll follow and chase, Slowly driving you nuts. Steal your mind from your brain Till you're only a husk.   You'll get sicker and sicker; It grows worse with the years. Then finally the man In the dark suit appears.   His garb is the blackest. His skin is quite white. The tendrils wrap 'round, You can't put up a fight.   He draws you close in, And begins with his work. As he removes you from life, You shake and you jerk. And then he is done, This thing with no face, And takes with him your body To some strange unknown place.

Make socks which pause your TV show if you fall asleep

Sometimes I fall asleep when I'm watching TV and don't realize it, because I dream the rest of the story. Then of course when I wake up I'm thoroughly confused: why are the bad guys still alive? They had transformed into evil giant ants then I saved the day by feeding them peanut butter laced with boric acid! When I finally realize I'm not the hero in the story, I have to either go to bed and abandon all hope of finding out what really happened, or watch the story backwards, sped up and silent till I see a scene I recognize. No fun! These socks will protect the integrity of your show's story line: build them by following this tutorial, wear them while watching TV and they will pause the show when you fall asleep. Of course they won't keep you from dreaming up an alternate ending, but at least when you wake up you can start where you dosed off and find out who the murderer really is. This is a Netflix tutorial, and it's supposed to pause Netflix shows... but I'm sure it can be adapted to turn off Amazon Prime or other streaming services...

How to make pvc pipe fit over pvc for a bow?[SOLVED]

Dear: Instructables community Hello this is me Noah with another project of mine. Just to let you know I am making a PVC bow and I am having trouble following a step in this video on the internet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ib_hH49p6g Honestly I thought the video seemed like it could work but the second last step isn't working for me. It involves using 1" PVC pipe to slid over 3/4" PVC pipe. What I did was I cut through one side of the PVC and it still wouldn't slide through all the way. Then I began using a rubber mallet with some 3/4" wrench and it still won't work. Honestly guys he never explained how to slide the pipe through and he just said to do it. How do I slide the 12" pipe in the middle of 60" pipe? Thank you. From: Noah UPDATE: PROBLEM SOLVED!!! Dear: Instructables community Just to let you know problem solved. I have no idea how necessary putting the PVC pipe over that but I think the problem is solved. I think I am going to use something else for a grip. Thank you guys for everything!!! From: Noah

Making something instead of buying is waste of time?

While searching the Internet for someone that has made their own Hot Press for making WPC (wood plastic composite) boards, I stumbled upon a Tshirt forum.  A man had posted a topic about how to make his own Tshirt heat press for making Tshirt designs.  The other forum members all decided it was a waste of time.  He should not bother trying because it's complicated.  In the end he would spend way more, and he could buy a used or cheap heat press locally. Is that not the ultimate irony?  People who post in a forum about making Tshirts tell another member that do-it-yourself is a bad idea.  Like buying a heat press to make your own Tshirts is a much better idea.  Do they all think they will be the one with that great design to put on a Tshirt and corner the elusive $100Billion Tshirt market?  Or do they just like to make their own Tshirts instead of buying one pre made.

The FootHold Snare

One day, you might find yourself lost in the woods while camping! One day, the stock market will crash and are YOU ready to survive? Traps and Snares are one of the most important things while surviving. Blake Alma, the founder of The Art of the Outdoorsman once said, "A trap is as someone else hunting for you when you can't, it is truly your best hunting buddy!" This is so true. Unlike fishing poles and firearms, traps and snares work when you are sleeping! Hence, learning how to make a simple snare indeed helpful and lifesaving for it is an art of an outdoorsman! Let's get started on this foothold snare. You need: A shovel, 550 lb. test paracord, and bait. Note: There are laws regarding trapping. Step 1: Digging your Hole Picture of Digging your Hole I hope you got a good shovel and back! You will need to dig a hole 2 to 3 feet deep. Yes, I know it is a true pain, but it can save your life or get you free food! Diameter of your Hole: - Raccoon/Opossum/Mink/Groundhog/Large Rabbit (6 inches) - Coyote/Fox/Bobcat (8 inches) - Animals under 550 pounds/Deer/Small Elk/Very Small Bear/ect. (12 to 18 inches) Step 2: Camouflaging After digging your hole, add leaves, thin sticks, tree bark, or grass over the hole. Do not put to much "camouflage" over the hole or else you may prevent the animal from falling down in the hole. Step 3: The Snare Wrap the paracord around a stick or you finger making a small loop. Tie the small loop, and pull your finger out. Make sure the knot is very strong. Put the other end of the paracord through the small loop. You should then have a giant loop, known as the snare itself. Make the loop's (snare) diameter slightly smaller than your hole's diameter. Tie the snare extra line around a tree, sapling, or log near by. Make sure it holds. Place the snare itself over the hole, on top of the "camouflage". Step 4: The Path of the Least Resistance Sense the animal has plenty of ground to step on, it might be hard to get him in your hole. Hence you need to create a the path of the least resistance. You need to make him limited to where the animal will step. Make a path to your foothold snare using leaves, sticks, logs, and grass. Make it easy for the animal to walk through. Like us we want to walk on a nice smooth sidewalk, not on a beaten trail. They want to walk on a path with the least resistance, they don't want step on pointy sticks. They want to step were the feel most comfortable. That is way you need to make a path to your snare, so it will step into your snare! Step 5: Baiting your FootHold Snare Picture of Baiting your FootHold Snare Place your bait two to three feet ahead of your foothold snare. Raccoon and mink like fish. Opossum like processed meat like hot dogs. Groundhogs like sweet apples. Coyote and fox like meat. Deer like deer feed (duh!). How it works: The animal will smell the bait and take your path of the least resistance. While walking up to your bait on the path, he will step his foot in the hole. It will pull his foot out of the hole and continue walking. (When we pulls his foot out the snare comes out with him.) Then the snare tightens around his foot, making him trapped. Nerf- Clip vs Magazine

Why does Hasbro not understand the difference between a clip and a magazine? They are leading people astray by calling their magazines "clips" when obviously they aren't.

Multiple gears on the crankset only to make a 3 speed bike. Possible? How?

I have a bike with an electric motor on the back wheel. My bike is fixed gear, so it's hard for me to help the motor when pedaling at medium speeds (>20km/h). On the other hand, once I'm out of batteries and I have a hard time going uphill. I would like make my bike a 3 speed bike without messing with the back wheel. Is it possible to have 1 gear at the back and 3 gears at the crankset to make my bike a 3 speed? My idea would be something like a hub gear, but that stays on the crankset instead of the back wheel.

How to Ski in the Summer

I was pretty impressed with the ingenuity and creative thinking that went into developing plastic sheets on ski hills for skiers to continue practicing through the summer. Maybe someone could make an Instructable on how to do one of these on the cheap for anyone who isn't fortunate enough to live near a ski club outfitted with these plastic chutes? I'm not a skier myself; grew up in Florida and live in SoCal so I'm more of a summer critter, but I love the Winter Olympics.
