Action Cams

Hi all, This is kind of an Outdoors/Tech thread. I work for a nature center and I am developing a watercraft program on our river. To help promote it, I would like to purchase some action cams to mount on canoes and kayaks, and post the videos and images on Facebook and Youtube. I have a $300 budget for these cameras. Ideally, I would like to be able to purchase two cams, including memory and additional accessories (mounts). However, I know that a good quality camera can be pricey, so if absolutely necessary, I will cut this down to one cam. If you are miraculously able to suggest a cam that is priced so that I can buy more than two, I would be amazed and eternally grateful. I do have some requirements: - Waterproof (Preferred camera is waterproof in itself, though an inexpensive case would be fine) - Durable - High Quality Image and video (If the video is shaky, what's the point?) - 2 Hour battery life, though 1-1.5 would be acceptable These are not required though I really would prefer them -View Screen (A lot of these cams have to be plugged into a computer or synced with a smart phone to view. Not great.) - Removable Battery to switch out if one dies. Do you have any recommendations within this price range? Also, what kind of memory would you suggest for about 1-2 hours of footage per camera? Thanks

True bolt action sniper

Ok so i got fed up of people saying that they're guns are bolt action when they arent. so i got this idea that an actual bolt action mechanism would have some sort of carrier that would pull the ram back and then return to the forward position. so what do people think?

how can i make a homemade airsoft rifle?

How can i make a homemade airsoft rifle easily, cheaply, quickly and it has to be fairly powerful, i mean theres no point making an airsoft rifle that only works indoors. it can be bolt action but it has to have a magazine, semi of fully auto is better. it doesnt matter if it is compressed air or spring.

How should i go about making my Spring-Action Airsoft Pistol semi auto?

Okay so i'm suiting up my old Airstrike 240 pistol to be semi auto. Though i'm not sure how to go about this. I know i want it to be electric, powered by a motor, but i'm not sure which one i should get or if this is even possible. If someone can give me a wevsite i can go to to look at motors i can figure out how to install it. Thanks.

how to reverse the polarity of a DC motor using a DPDT relay, limit switch, and timer?

Ok, i am not an electrician and understand very little, but here's what i want to do.  I have a reversable 18V cordless drill I have taken apart to get at just the motor.  What I want it to do is turn on automaticallly with a timer in one direction and shut off (with a limit switch?) after about 2 seconds.  About 14 hours later I need the opposite action. Both actions automatic using a timer with AC power.  The application is a door opening and closing veritcally (chicken coop door).

Working on full auto AK47

I'm working on a mechanism to make a bolt action rifle fully auto and also a good, curved, removable magazine. I just started yesterday so I'll have the pics up maybe 2 weeks-a month.

Silk Road

What are your thoughts on it? And its closing? Ever take a visit when it was up, use it; do you think the courts of New York had any jurisdiction or right to take action? Love to hear opinions. I personally thought it was a good thing, and I visited now and then. Never bought anything though.

Total Eclipse of the Moon Tomorrow Night

There's going to be a total eclipse of the moon tomorrow night at 7:26 pm PST. Assuming that the bay area isn't covered with clouds that means that we'll be able to see some lunar action without having to try to stay awake while getting our feet soggy climbing around a hill at 3 in the morning.Oh wait, I just checked the weather report for tomorrow night. Mostly cloudy. Damn! link

Our latest project

Read this description: So I haven't posted anything in a long while, and, as well as work, one of the this was down to me and a few friends getting together and forming a YouTube channel called "MTNunlimited". It started out when we did drama at school (a subject which we no longer take) we had a tonne of ideas that we never got to use, and so we can now showcase them on the YouTube channel. Recently, our local youth theatre announced it's closure this Easter, and so we've decided to offer some kind of alternative to anyone who wanted to join in with amateur film-making. Our goal is simply to have fun. If you click onto our channel here, you'll see that we still have a long way to go before we're near the same calibre as a lot of current Internet filmmakers. This is why we have turned to the instructables community for support. We have a few ideas, but we would love to hear other people's thoughts on what we could possibly base a new video on. We'd also greatly appreciate any tips or tricks of the trade that we have not yet been enlightened on. Don’t consider this ‘spam’, as that’s very much the opposite of why I made this forum topic. I posted this to hear guidance and advice from people who have a bit more experience than us. Here's a little montage I made of what we do, in the form of a cinematic trailer, enjoy! And once again, thanks for any support offered :) - Lowney

"Boy's Life" Archives

http://boyslife.org/wayback/ I most remember "scouts in action" these were cautionary tales, as well as how to get yourself or a stranger out of a tight spot. They seem to be about page 45 to 65. Common topics: "trapped in quicksand" or " when the cave collapsed" or "the chemistry set explosive went off in his hand!!" But there was so much more, like how to make stuff with sticks, rope and knots. So much of my kidhood was howto based on scout stuff. I'm tryin to figure out how to paste  pics from the mag at the above link.

It's that time of year again!

It's time to get ready for the breeding season, folks! If you enjoyed the bird-surveying Instructable I wrote this time last year, now is the time to start taking action. The regional officers are now contacting people who have taken part in the past, and looking for more people to take part this year. Register here to take part, because for British birders, this is one of the few legitimate chances to go birding off-piste, plus you are contributing to an important piece of long-term science.

Brit Plans to Fling Poo at Thieves with Trebuchet

A 70-year-old Englishman has a 30-foot trebuchet and has plans to use it to toss big piles of chicken poo at thieves. I'm not sure just how accurate he can be with it, but I sure would love to see such a crazy device in action. And if that doesn't work, he has a 20-foot cannon that he wants to use to shoot rubber-tipped ammo. "I'm not out to kill anyone or even hurt them," he says. "I just want to keep yobs off my land." link

Speed Cameras

Personally, I'm on the fence on whether or not these are a good idea in the first place. Should people be speeding in the first place? If yes, why? Having a large speed differential with the rest of the traffic can be quite a dangerous situation.... Why am I on the fence? Because we, in addition to the UK, are already an endemic surveillance society (allong with Russia and China) CITE - it's sad :(]. I'm also anti rfid ID (including the new US passports :/)http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/27/angry-drivers-torching-traffic-cameras-in-england/Apparently, the Luddite tradition of machine breaking is alive and well in its country of origin. According to a report, a group calling itself MAD -- or Motorists Against Detection -- have taken to setting autonomous traffic cameras ablaze across the United Kingdom, and are detailing their exploits on a website (of course). The group's "PR" claims they have been active since 2000, and have destroyed over 1000 roadside cameras. Says the group's leader, Capt. Gatso, "The vigilante anti-speed camera group have announced a summer of MADness which will see them target for destruction all speed cameras in the UK. It's now going to be a period of zero tolerance against all speed cameras." The gang of disgruntled drivers also plans a day of action called "National Cover-Up Your Number Plates Day." Guy Fawkes would be proud. Here's a website for the torched camerasI'm interested to hear the opinion of those of you in the UK... Of course, in addition to everyone else.. Opinions on speed cameras?

Records Ahoy!

'Specialist researchers at the University of Nottingham say they have developed one of the fastest swimsuits in the world.Scientists at NASA tested the fabric using specialised computer modelling technique to track fluid flow.Swimmers testing the new suit have so far broken three world records. The LZR racer suit, manufactured by Speedo, has up to 5% less drag in the water than a previous model produced last year.Jess Sylvester, a swimmer who has been testing the new suit in Nottingham, said she felt "like a rocket" when she wore it."I feel fast just standing out of the pool in the suit."As soon as I hit the water I feel really fast, really streamlined and it just gives me confidence wearing it."Dr Morvan said: "We focus on the hydrodynamics of the swimmer in the pool."Ms Sylvester added the suit was so tight that it stopped muscles "oscillating and vibrating" which caused drag and could slow swimmers down.World records set with the new swimsuit include those by:Australia's Eamon Sullivan, who shaved 0.08 seconds off Alexander Popov's record in the 50m freestyleZimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry who sliced 2/10th of a second off Hungarian Krisztina Egerzegi's record in the 200m backstrokeand American swimmer Natalie Coughlin who broke the 100m backstroke record in 59.21 seconds.BBC storyVideo of the suit in actionOdd Speedo game websiteUniversity of Nottingham Press ReleasePast Olympic row over Speedo suits.

TV sports blow.

I hate sports on TV.  In math class today, we were talking about how some major league baseball player who gets paid at least 1 Million dollars per year has a batting average of .235, which is pretty lame.  Why the heck do people pay tickets or watch TV just to see average people play baseball or basketball or any sport actually?  In that case, why don't people pay to watch kids play basketball in the gym or to watch adults play softball in their free time?  It's the same thing, the only thing that the people who play sports in their spare time don't have is a huge corporation backing them up and putting their faces on TV. Secondly, it gets in the way of programs I want to watch.  I turn on the TV at the advertised time to watch Family Guy, which was at 7:00, and instead I get to watch a baseball game with sub-par action.  I don't really care about who won what game, and I don't see how this is any different from sports games that adults play out of their spare time.   To make it worse, kids at school just talk and talk and talk about the sports games.  Shut the hell up people!  I don't care about the games, I don't care who won, I don't care about that pass or slam dunk, stop wasting my time.   Boycott sports.  Don't buy tickets, don't watch games, and DON'T BUY ANY TEAM JERSEYS THAT STORES HAPPEN TO SELL!

Not Liable name change

When we released categories in April my intention was to help people find more Instructables that fit their interests. We carefully chose eight categories that broadly represented the site, and encouraged cross-over by allowing Instructables to be in two categories. I imagined that the categories would change and grow with time: If we saw an influx of Instructables of a certain type that couldn't be accommodated by the sub-category keywords, we'd create a new category. Not Liable was intended for all things that required a safety warning, and it was us thumbing our nose at our overly litigious society. I love the Not Liable category; many of the projects are inspiring, ridiculous, hilarious, and completely irreverent. However, over the past few months it seems that the specific name Not Liable isn't a great fit for the Instructables that show up there. Also, the focus on caution, safety, and "I am not liable for your actions..." attracts two types (at least two, maybe more) of Instructables that aren't a great fit, and just shouldn't be there at all. First, there are the Instructables that require some discussion of safety, but safety isn't a defining characteristic. For example, if a project involves making a book shelf with a table saw, the author should mention that table saws require care, but this doesn't make it a Not Liable Instructable. On the other hand, safety is at the very core of an Instructable on breathing fire. Second, many people misunderstand the meaning of the name, and assume it's a category only for things that might be illegal or immoral. I firmly believe that information should never be illegal, but there are projects that will never make good Instructables, and some people interpret Not Liable as a call for those projects. Also, Not Liable has always rubbed my aesthetic sense the wrong way: It's our only two-word category! So, I propose to change the name of the category to better reflect the Instructables already there, and as a way to encourage more Instructables of the type we want. When we transition, we'll add a "Not Liable" keyword to various Instructables to seed a proper Not Liable sub-category.So, give us a hand coming up with a new name, and tell us your thoughts.Brainstorm of potential ideas:AudaciousBizarreBrazenDeviantEccentricEdgeFreakyFunkyImprudentIrreverentOffbeatOutrePerverseShenanigansWarped
