Speed Cameras

Personally, I'm on the fence on whether or not these are a good idea in the first place. Should people be speeding in the first place? If yes, why? Having a large speed differential with the rest of the traffic can be quite a dangerous situation.... Why am I on the fence? Because we, in addition to the UK, are already an endemic surveillance society (allong with Russia and China) CITE - it's sad :(]. I'm also anti rfid ID (including the new US passports :/)http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/27/angry-drivers-torching-traffic-cameras-in-england/Apparently, the Luddite tradition of machine breaking is alive and well in its country of origin. According to a report, a group calling itself MAD -- or Motorists Against Detection -- have taken to setting autonomous traffic cameras ablaze across the United Kingdom, and are detailing their exploits on a website (of course). The group's "PR" claims they have been active since 2000, and have destroyed over 1000 roadside cameras. Says the group's leader, Capt. Gatso, "The vigilante anti-speed camera group have announced a summer of MADness which will see them target for destruction all speed cameras in the UK. It's now going to be a period of zero tolerance against all speed cameras." The gang of disgruntled drivers also plans a day of action called "National Cover-Up Your Number Plates Day." Guy Fawkes would be proud. Here's a website for the torched camerasI'm interested to hear the opinion of those of you in the UK... Of course, in addition to everyone else.. Opinions on speed cameras?

Student arrested for making disposable camera Taser

The capacitors inside disposable cameras pack a pretty big wallop and it's recommended that you act very carefully around them. If you don't you'll get zapped. And if you set it up so that someone else could get zapped you might even get arrested like this 14-year-old kid from Connecticut. linkvia boingboing

What did Google Maps cameras discover over a lake in Switzerland?

Google Maps have been taking "street view" images for a number of years now, and they've captured some interesting things... In this case, there's a ghostly figure that appears over a lake in Switzerland. If you want to see it with your own eyes, go to Google Maps.   Copy and paste these coordinates for the location: 47.110579, 9.227568   Zoom in until you are in street view.   Then look to the sky (North-West over the lake). Was this just a strange camera anomaly? or something more divine?

Is it possible to put batteries in parallel to increase battery life?

I was just wondering if it is possible to put batteries in parallel to increase battery life? I was thinking of the Go Pro Hero 3 camera. I know they have a battery backpack, but I just wanted to know if it was possible to stretch the battery life, if you bought lots of batteries and put them in parallel.... And attach the pack of batteries with a cord. Or is there another way to do the same thing?

How to remodel my front yard garden?

Hi, i have my front yard that I want to renovate so that it is both appealing day and night to anybody who walks in and memorises that moment.  This is the area that has the most traffic everyday at about any time so it needs to be practical, safe and appealing.  I want to design and use any materials but needs to be in the green way as there are much focus on these nowadays and prevent wastage. This is what I have in mind: 12 volt system: A/or many power packs that will provide power to all the electrical stuffs, charged using solar panels and since these will be low voltage it should be safe. Items that would be using 12v would be outdoor lighthing, the power cables, water pump submersible, submersible light.  It would be great to have an electrical plan that would aid however I don't know how to do that. Water feature: Add a biological filter made of concrete for the pond with all its plumbing and also add overflow drain in pond and a small canal to evacuate the excess of water.  Plants:  Concerning the plants some will be moved, cut down or removed completely.  I want a complete mixture of different kinds of plants such As bushes creeping plants etc.  It would be nice to create a plant plan both written and visual as it would aid greatly however I don't really have that knowledge. Other things: I would like to include pergolas and arbours and also allow plants to grow on them such as creeping plants. I want the area to have complete or as much privacy as possible but don't really know specially by hiding the view from above.  As A boundary I want to include fencing and then let creeping plants to grow on them just to get that privacy.  An automatic watering system would be very good such as popup sprinkler, or drip irrigation but an irrigation plan would best be suited but still I don't know how to make that. There should be provision for spaces in adding security cameras that would remain hidden for a certain time period. Finally there should be an Area to store dustbin and also to let clothes dry.

Can a photo finish image produce a false result in a race or other circumstance?

Whether a 100m dash, a cycling race, or boats, cars or motorcycles going in excess of 200mph many times these close finishes are determined by high speed photo finish cameras or even less accurate low speed digital video. My question relates primarily to alignment of the camera in relation to the finish line but also other variable such as the surface of the finish line which could be either crowned or banked. Racers crossing over the line a few mm above another just because they are on either side of the centerline of the racing surface. Water finishes produce even more variables. Using a simple bike race where bunch sprint finishes are common with speeds approaching 40+mph I would place a bank of 9 (or 3) cameras on opposite sides of the finish line. Each camera should in theory produce a slightly different image of the finish with variable determinations of outcomes and results based on the resulting images. How would a judge or anyone determine the "correct" image and true result having only the digital picture? Second - of the photo finish images I have seen it seems the finish line is rather subjective? Is the actual finish on or more frames before or after the determined finish? If photo finish and photos in general admissable in court (myth???) how often is the perpective of the camera being judged considered? i.e. Someone who is significantly off the perpendicular snaps a photo producing an image that is quite different from another person's who is at a different angle in relation to the finish. Thank you!

Action Cams

Hi all, This is kind of an Outdoors/Tech thread. I work for a nature center and I am developing a watercraft program on our river. To help promote it, I would like to purchase some action cams to mount on canoes and kayaks, and post the videos and images on Facebook and Youtube. I have a $300 budget for these cameras. Ideally, I would like to be able to purchase two cams, including memory and additional accessories (mounts). However, I know that a good quality camera can be pricey, so if absolutely necessary, I will cut this down to one cam. If you are miraculously able to suggest a cam that is priced so that I can buy more than two, I would be amazed and eternally grateful. I do have some requirements: - Waterproof (Preferred camera is waterproof in itself, though an inexpensive case would be fine) - Durable - High Quality Image and video (If the video is shaky, what's the point?) - 2 Hour battery life, though 1-1.5 would be acceptable These are not required though I really would prefer them -View Screen (A lot of these cams have to be plugged into a computer or synced with a smart phone to view. Not great.) - Removable Battery to switch out if one dies. Do you have any recommendations within this price range? Also, what kind of memory would you suggest for about 1-2 hours of footage per camera? Thanks

All this CSI Bull****

Well, as I'm watching a csi clone as many people will know as Crossing Jordan (Is she crossing a river? What a mystery all in itself). Why do these show writers think that you can do extra-ordinary technological things in their crime labs that we can't actually do in this current day and age, not nearly as well as what they show us. For example, as in pretty much every episode of CSI, there is some image, some security footage or the such, they "clear up" the image or make a shitty black and white video camera tape look crisp and sharp like it's hd and they can read the letters on a newspaper that someone is holding sitting on a bench like 500 feet away. This people is not possible, not ever. You cannot "extrapolate" pixels out of pixels that aren't already there. If your security camera is 640x480 resolution or the such, say it's pointed to your wall at the end of your living room for example. Something up close, like 5-10 feet away from the camera, the pixel representation of the actual object is fairly well represented digitally and the object is readable usually, maybe with a bit of image tweaking. But say you have a big living room and you need to read a newspaper that is strangely pinned to your wall by a stranger. If it's too far away, the camera sees a lot of the text as big blockly black or white pixels, and each bit of the newspaper isn't captured pixel by pixel, just a representation of what it would look like. But on a pixelated camera, you're never going to be able to pull pixels out of pixels that aren't there like I already said, it makes no sense. And on these csi shows, they're seen doing crazy shit like pulling a liscense plate number from a police car footage tape of the car BEHIND the cruiser by "extrapolating" the pixels they seemed to be able to read the license plate by using the left mirror of the car in front of the cruiser, and to that, this would imply that the car behind was parked to the left of the cruiser, but in reality in the show itself, the car was right behind cruiser where you wouldn't have been able to see the plate anyways.Stuff like matching blood spatter marks to certain cuts on victims or the such, I know this can and is done in real life to a certain point and degree, everything you see in csi is based apon what is used in the real force. But the difference is that in CSI it is SUPER EXAGGERATED way beyond what's possible in real life. I've finally ran out of typing energy so you guys are spared any more of my rant but holy **** I can not figure out how people enjoy CSI so much seeing as it's soooooooo fake in reality. How many other people think it's fake like me?

Ever had an I'ble just NOT go right?

Well, The other night I set out to make two trays of treats for my work collegues on Christmas Eve... I then had a GREAT idea to turn them into I'bles The peppermint Snowmen went great without any major unfixable hiccups... My candy Cane Fudge however *sigh* *face palm* I deceided to make my Christmas treats into I'bles and Entries into the Christmas Gifts contest...So as I 'baked' I snapped away on my camera. Everything was going well until I was knocked by my dogs whilst adding the food colouring, so that it looked like a rainbow had vomited into my mix... then to add insult to injury, I dropped the cooling mixture on the way to the refridgerator.... Luckily I cought my camera... but the fudge was... well.. beyond repair. What I wan't to know, is if you have ever had a disasterous I'ble attempt, and have you posted it? -Biggsy Cheerio

I am building a 1/6th scale working tilt train and I am want to use small air bag suspension to make it tilt on corners.

The real tilt train only tilts 5 degrees each side of level for cornering but it uses a different method of controlling the tilt which may be too difficult in 1/6th scale so that is why I was thinking of the airbags as they are also on the real train. I am also looking at putting a video camera in the loco cabs with monitors in each carriage just like the real ones.

My REAL catapult

I recently built a Huge catapult at my friends house out of old decking. It is 13 feet long with a 14 foot arm. My friend needs to get the drill fixed so we can finish and until then we are waiting anxiously. It should shoot a large, 10 pound rock about 100 feet. The next time I go over I'm gonna bring my camera and take a video of it, and guess what? It's powered 100% by torsion just like the Romans. It uses 2 inch diameter rope. I also made a Roman Scorpion which uses 1 inch diameter rope and shoots large arrows 100 feet.

Raising a geodesic dome

Just thought I'd share a time lapse video I made last year (but just got around to putting it online) Two of my kids are involved with a local circus and last year, said circus bought a geodesic dome to use as a venue for shows. There was great excitement when it was delivered and put together for the first time. It seemed appropriate to record the momentous occasion, but knowing how long it was going to take, a normal video was out of the question. So I set up the tripod and camera and took photos roughly every five minutes. The first photo was taken just after 9am and the last one was taken just after 5pm. It's quite an interesting structure and so strong, they can rig the aerial apparatus from just about any point!

Our latest project

Read this description: So I haven't posted anything in a long while, and, as well as work, one of the this was down to me and a few friends getting together and forming a YouTube channel called "MTNunlimited". It started out when we did drama at school (a subject which we no longer take) we had a tonne of ideas that we never got to use, and so we can now showcase them on the YouTube channel. Recently, our local youth theatre announced it's closure this Easter, and so we've decided to offer some kind of alternative to anyone who wanted to join in with amateur film-making. Our goal is simply to have fun. If you click onto our channel here, you'll see that we still have a long way to go before we're near the same calibre as a lot of current Internet filmmakers. This is why we have turned to the instructables community for support. We have a few ideas, but we would love to hear other people's thoughts on what we could possibly base a new video on. We'd also greatly appreciate any tips or tricks of the trade that we have not yet been enlightened on. Don’t consider this ‘spam’, as that’s very much the opposite of why I made this forum topic. I posted this to hear guidance and advice from people who have a bit more experience than us. Here's a little montage I made of what we do, in the form of a cinematic trailer, enjoy! And once again, thanks for any support offered :) - Lowney

There was a parrot in our tree! (updated)

I was on the computer and my dad came inside and told me there was a parrot in our tree! So I grabbed my camera and ran outside. It's a really beautiful bird. We got it to go onto someone's arm and then got it into our garage. Then it landed on my arm so my dad tried to come catch it with a box and it almost got stuck in my hair. Eventually we got it in the box and brought it over to my neighbors house (she was helping us catch it) because my mom would have a cow if she came home and saw that I had a parrot. They're going to call the police department and stuff so they most likely won't be able to keep it :(Update The neighbors had the parrot for quite a while and they had put an and in the newspaper and everything and then they gave it to one of their friends to take care of and then later the person who owned the bird came back from vacation and contacted them about it. I'm not sure what happened after that.

Datura

My datura has been flowering for about a month now, and it seems all the insects in the world have figured it out. It gets swarmed by moths, bees, flies, etc. every night now, so I ran out with my camera and caught some pics of the bees going crazah! The flowers bloom only at night and fade the following morning.  The fragrance is very strong and lovely, but the plant is DANGEROUS!  Native American people used the plant ritualistically to induce hallucinations, but consuming the plant can kill you.  Some people will develop contact dermatitis just from touching the soft, velvety leaves.  Despite its showy blooms and large leaves, the plant is drought tolerant and can take a lot of heat and sun.  It will self-sow readily, and I'm expecting a lot of seeds just gauging from how many blooms (and seed pods) I've had.  My plants are HUGE, and I never would have expected them to get so big so fast from little 4" pots.

Burning Man 2007 Time Lapse

Check out this awesome time-lapse of Burning Man 2007! Video by peef from the Shipyard -- thanks to Star for the link. From peef's notes: The images were captured by a Canon G3 mounted in a weatherproof housing of my own design up on a 20 foot pole next to the Powertainer. There were 18,486 images shot at 2272x1704 which is almost 4 megapixels each. Some of the full-size stills are stunning! The camera was controlled by a custom Daemon I wrote using the Gphoto library, which ran on the Powertainer's Slackware linux system and the images were stored full-size on a hard drive. After the event, I ran another piece of code that downsampled the images to 640x480 then composed them at 30fps into a MPEG-4 video. My friend Tom Sepe added the Music and Titles for me and Voila! The Man burns ( prematurely! ) around 3:55, then is temporarily removed by crane for repairs. The actual burn happens around 8:00. In between you'll catch lots of neon, dust storms, and some beautiful shadows crawling across the playa.Gorgeous still photo taken by Scott Beale of Laughing Squid.

would this bike idea work?

I have an idea for a bike, where you lay down to use it, sort of like a recumbent, except on your stomach instead. it would be motor powered, and have 2 back tires and one front tire, steered by two steel (or maybe some other material) cables directly attached to the handle bars via a smaller bar at the bottom of the handle bars. it would probably have 48v's worth of batteries, and the chassis would most likely be made out of PVC piping. (unless that isnt a good material for this) i would be designing the bike around me, there might be a camera display so i can see behind me, headlights and tail lights for at night, and most definitely some brakes, maybe disc brakes. i weigh about 100lbs, so the pvc piping should be able to support my weight, i was thinking of using 1.5" or 2" diameter pvc piping, should i use something with a wider diameter? the base of the chassis would be made from 4 pvc pipes arranged in a square, with the pipes about 2"-4" apart. does anyone think this design is totally impossible? or could it work out? i want to know before i buy anything. on the strength of pvc pipes, my friend once had a pvc bike trailer that was capable of supporting my weight, he has since taken it apart to use the pvc in other projects. it was 2" pvc pipes used on that trailer.

Does anyone know what this weird bug I found is?

So yeah, I found this weird bug in my room, can anyone tell me what the heck it is? (a name would be extra nice) I think it's a larvae of some kind. Also, I know the pictrue quality is horrible, but it's the best I could do with a 2 MP phone camera. It's about as long as my thumb nail, which makes it about 10mm(~2/5 of an inch for you non-metric people), and it has a green/greyish, mandarine seed shaped spot on its both sides of the white part that didn't really come out in the picture, when I left it alone for long enough it stuck its tiny body out of the main white part, which you can kinda see in the photo. Its body is segmented like a centipede's. The main white part has two holes at either end, one of which the "head" (I think...) pokes out, and I dunno what the other one's for. It's quite flat, and has no legs on the white bit, it seems to drag the white bit along behind it. And another thing that didn't come out in the photo is the texture of the pod (I guess that's what you'd call it) is quite rough, I didn't touch it, but that's what it looked like. I also took a video, but I can't be bothered uploading it. Thanks in advance, Julian

I was lucky to score a nice and real 8000mAh power pack with a solar cell from my local discounter.Realising the solar cell is more a gimmick than of real use I started to wonder....We all love our mobile devices and really hate that they need to be constantly charged up again. On long outdoor trips people used to carry a lot of gear and vital supplies. In todays times it almost seems that solar and battery power start to replace food and water. No trip is complete without pics, selfies and videos, some even take a drone with them. So: are there ways to increase your luggage weight by thinking smarter?Modern technology has come a long way and moves faster ever year.Solar cells are no exception here.Be it foldable setups or now even roll ups of flexible cell systems, you have the total freedom of coice. But then again: You are going on a week long camping trip in the middle of nowhere...Going on foot or using a bike means you need to keep the extras down or hire someone to carry them. Here are some of my yet to be finnished ideas:As long as you don't use them commercially feel free to make an Instructable or just use the ideas!1. Pop up amd normal tents. They seem to be the new standard now.Big with no poles on the inside and even someone who never used a tent can set them up.With the design comes a certain way of folding everything to pack it.Flexible solar cell designs won't break and can often be arranged so they would actually be able to replace parts of the outer tent material. And if it could mean they would get kinked too much and too often they are still perfect to create some "strap on panels" that can be rolled up and included with your foam underlay or mattress.A 200 or even 400W system can be transported easy and has less weight than a 80W fold up solution that you struggle to secure on your backpack or bike.2. Trackers! What is now almost a standard for fixed installations is still not seen in mobile setups. You pop up your panels, connect the power packs or batteries and go fishing, hiking or whatever. The sun moves on, the efficiency of the panels suffer. There are a lot of great Ibles for these solar trackers, from simple to 3 dimensional.Kites loves to use carbon fibre rods to reduce the weight.A tracking frame to hold a good sized flexible panel would count at less than 300 grams....In return you get up to 40% higher effiency and overall output compared to a fixed panel!Roll the panel up, fold the frame and you end up with a quite small roll that is easy to transport and very low in weight.3. Battery backups. No matter how long and well you planned, the weather might let you down shortly after your trip started. For a lot of comitted people that is no problem. The lack of power though can cause some to struggle to keep their video logs running.Your small drone might be great but it only lasts for less then 30 minutes until you need fresh batteries.Similar story if you use stabilizers, automatic tilt and pan gadgets or just a 360° camera.Just your cell phone alone can be a hassle if you use it as the main thing for GPS, pics and videos. At least one set of spare batteries seems to be a must have these days. For a lot of things it does make sense, for others not so much.Unless you really need ongoing power it might be enough to just charge you empty battery at the end of the day.But then the sun is down and options are gone for solar energy. In the RC area we can find a lot of powerful battery packs.Usually around 14V but 40 or more are no problem. And if you check the E-bike and scooter sections you will find some quite powerful and light weight battery packs. If you go outdoors a lot and for longer periods of time then it makes sense to replace the multiple battery options with just a single one.Use a high power backup battery with your solar system.DC-DC converters make it possible to literally combine everything with everything.Select the battery size so it will suit your charging needs and capabiliteis of the solar setup.Once time to close the tent you enjoy electricity to finnish your logs while your batteries are being charged during the night from the backup.4. Emergency generator. We all know these cheap gadgets like crank up torches or cranking mobile phone chargers.Nice to play with, utterly useless if you actually have to rely on them.A full charge for your modern phone might mean you crank for at least half the day - good luck!If you already carry a supply of gas for your cooking needs then these new fuel cells running on butane might be nice. Some of the Kickstarter projects actually made it into production!Prices though are more for real fans or those with enough money...But a small RC engine can drive some nice DC motor with very little fuel....In return you get a pocket sized generator that can charger your phone fully in the same amount of time a wall charger would...
