The effects of randomness

I was looking for a picture of SF Cody, followed a couple of random links and discovered that I share my birthday with the man that invented 3D glasses and the shiny hologram on credit cards.Anyhoo...I wonder, has anybody else noticed higher traffic on their old Instructables? My guess is that the random search function is doing its job.

How to make coughing powder that will effect animals. Answered

I have always wanted to make a coughing powder that could be thrown into the air and would make animals (who breathed it in) cough like crazy so they will be distracted while I escape . How could I make something like this but have it not be toxic to my subjects? Another things is a question on how I would deploy it. I don't want to use a straw or anything small, but something that would distribute it amounts large enough to distract a bear. By the way I was looking for ingredients from home.

Does anyone thinks that the new US internet legislation will effect the Instructables site?

Lets face it, we are all hooked on Instructables. We cite from many internet sites, we share a lot of information, we all come from different parts of the world and we all share in this democratic site. I would hate to see that somehow this site would need to police itself to adhere to new SOPA legislation. Do you believe that this proposed legislation somehow will effect our dear site?

Would layers of microfiber cloth work as an effective N95 air filter substitute?

Hello, as many of you know, there are some devastating fires in California right now. My family and friends live nearby to these fires, and are being exposed to toxic levels of smoke and air pollution. Due to the disaster situation, many stores that sell n95 masks have sold out or are price gouging people who need them. I have been trying to figure out an effective solution where they could use household materials to approximate the particulate filtering properties of the n95 filter. I was thinking they could make some kind of respirator style mask with the main face mask made of cardboard and duct tape, ad make a "cartridge" for the mask out of a cardboard cylinder stuffed with layers of microfiber cleaning cloth, or potentially other air filtering material, or even activated charcoal if it is available.I understand that such filters are not an ideal substitute but when the air is completely off the scale for toxicity, anything is better than nothing. Does anyone have any input on this? Is this worthwhile at all? Is there another commonly available material that you would reccomend other than microfiber cleaning cloths? -ilpug

Do you see what I see?

Here's a very cool illusion I have taken from this BBC article. First notice that the two desert scenes have exactly the same colour composition. The skies are both blue-ish and the deserts are both yellow-ish. Stare at the dot between the red and green squares for 60 seconds, and then look back at the dot between the two desert scenes. The more focused you are in staring at the dot between the green and red squares the better the subsequent illusion will be. The illusion was created by neuroscientist Beau Lotto (website here, with more illusions). (Are you colour blind?  Do you see any effect from this illusion?) I have a feeling that this effect could be used in some sort of cool Instructable, but I have no idea what...

Our latest project

Read this description: So I haven't posted anything in a long while, and, as well as work, one of the this was down to me and a few friends getting together and forming a YouTube channel called "MTNunlimited". It started out when we did drama at school (a subject which we no longer take) we had a tonne of ideas that we never got to use, and so we can now showcase them on the YouTube channel. Recently, our local youth theatre announced it's closure this Easter, and so we've decided to offer some kind of alternative to anyone who wanted to join in with amateur film-making. Our goal is simply to have fun. If you click onto our channel here, you'll see that we still have a long way to go before we're near the same calibre as a lot of current Internet filmmakers. This is why we have turned to the instructables community for support. We have a few ideas, but we would love to hear other people's thoughts on what we could possibly base a new video on. We'd also greatly appreciate any tips or tricks of the trade that we have not yet been enlightened on. Don’t consider this ‘spam’, as that’s very much the opposite of why I made this forum topic. I posted this to hear guidance and advice from people who have a bit more experience than us. Here's a little montage I made of what we do, in the form of a cinematic trailer, enjoy! And once again, thanks for any support offered :) - Lowney

Random GoodHart: a newly discovered LAW

I know this is kind of random, and I just now, moments ago, accidentally discovered this, but there is a GOODHART's LAW  :-) It states:   once a social or economic indicator or other surrogate measure is made a target for the purpose of conducting social or economic policy, then it will lose the information content that would qualify it to play that role. This almost sounds like a parallel to the famous Quantum Mechanics rule of effecting the state of a particle by observing it.  This bulletin was brought to you by the Totally Random Goodhart Reseach and Useless Information Recovery team.  Thanks for reading.

The Inverted Map

This map reimagines the Earth with the idea that the oceans are the land masses and the continents are the oceans. It's interesting to see a world map where everything is connected and it would be possible to walk the entire circumference. It reminds us that what is "normal" comes from our own personal experiences.Whether the map is a Mercator map, a Peters map, or a map of something besides the Earth, that map can have a huge effect on how you perceive it. Just like statistics, maps can be deceiving so make sure you're questioning the sources and get the best information you can. link

ShotGun Mode on Killerks Magnum

First of all let me just say that i find killerks magnum, yes killerk's, a pretty good gun.Its design is very good so good that it can be modified in several different ways ways. After a few tweaks to the trigger mechinism i was able to apply a strong rubberband, so it could finally reach about 38-45 ft and hit hard with one shot. But i also discovered a shotgun effect when put three bullets in.I know the picture isn't good and its not mine but my computer isn't letting me upload mine.try to follow my explanation. You put the bullet in the main barrel(orange connecter) then above and below there are two empty slots where the ram also hits, jam(not really jam just put in) 2 more bullets above and below, so when shot three come out!SORRY FOR CRAPPY EXPLANATION BUT ITS NOT LETTING ME CREATE NOTES!Technically shotguns arn't susposed to go very far so when you put 3 'slugs' it only reachs 15 feet but hurts really hard. really HARD.If you already know this feature then don't blame me , its something that hasn't been shared.BTW its also cooler when held sideways so the shot comes in a split effect.IT REALLY HURT WHEN SHOT WITH THIS MODE!IT REALLY HURT WHEN SHOT WITH THIS MODE!IT REALLY HURT WHEN SHOT WITH THIS MODE!IT REALLY HURT WHEN SHOT WITH THIS MODE!

Model sailboat for teaching?

Hello, I work at a Boy Scout Camp over the summer, and one of the merit badges we teach is Small Boat Sailing.  Most of the merit badge goes smoothly, but kids seem to have a hard time with points of sail.  Our plan is to make a small model to put in a tub of water and use a handheld fan to demonstrate the effect the wind will have on the boat at different angles and sail positions.  Any tips on this?  I tried finding models that were accurate, but they were out of our price range.  I want the sail and mast to be able to rotate smoothly, and the mainsheet to be able to be locked and unlocked.

What can we learn from those Amazing old Sharks ?

Currently a Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus) is good for 400 year lifetime. I would do an annual harbor swim of port Nuuk and consume Hákarl  (cured shark)  followed by a jigger of Brennivín known as (Black_Death) for just another 100 years added to my life. Any ideas of a better method will be worthy of support and consideration. "Cold can also activate antiaging genes that help an animal better fold proteins, get rid of DNA-damaging molecules, and even fight off infections more effectively, extending life span. The cold-activated molecules “are evolutionarily conserved” across the animal kingdom, and thus these pathways very likely exist in us and these sharks too"

Yellow Fever Vaccine Question

OK, big trip coming up, all the Kite Boys (including GrandfatherKite) are off to Kenya at the end of July. We'll be on safari around Samburu, Lake Naivasha, Treetops, that general area. We've had a bunch of vaccines already, and have our malaria tablets ordered, but we haven't had Yellow Fever vaccines yet. Here's the thing - should we? I've had conflicting advice from medical professionals (one said I need it, one said no need), probably down to a lack of experience in the area, so I'm wondering what you folk have to say. Yes, I know that free medical advice on the internet is frequently worth less than you pay for it, I'm just after some opinions or pointers on the risks vs benefits. Are the probable side effects worth it, given the potential risk involved?

I NEED SOME ADVICE ON HOW TO PROTECT MY OPLANTS IN THE WINTER.

I envision something with the sliding glass door on one end, the 3 windows on one side and the other two on the end opposite the sliding glass door. I think I should use the rippled fiblerglass stuff for the top. How hard is this going to be to frame and could someone give me an extimate of what it might cost me to get it it done. Should I use cinderblock or wood framing and will they live in wouthern Illinois without me heating the shed? kimberlyballard22@yahoo.com

I'm trying to make a Breast Plate

Hey, I'm going to build a piece of FANTASY chest armor. I'm not going for realism or authenticity. Just making "a pile of spikes" that looks cool in my opinion. I'm thinking of making something to the equivalent of a low neck line tank top out of leather / tight weave canvas, and then covering it in steel plates. I'm thinking of dividing the front suit into groups and bands of plate. So I'm going to have a set of bands from the right and left chest, then another section that joins them down the center. A section for the abdomen, a section for each side, and then similar sections for the back. I'm then going to bolt the shoulders onto their respective chest plates. So I've done a crappy sketch on GIMP, Kinda explaining what I'm going to do for the center line of the chest. I think If I do this right It'll allow a lot of flexibility, might even be able to see my chest expand and contract while breathing which I think would be a cool effect. Is there any reason why this wont work? But are there any key factors that I need to take into account when doing this? Parts that need to be more flexible than others?

How can I feed ants? Answered

I know that ants have the instinct to bring all of the food they find to the Queen, so if I put ants in an ant farm-type-of-setting, will the ants even eat the food I give to them or will they not eat it and starve?  I know ants like sugary foods and dead bugs, but I need to feed them with a plant that I can grow. I am doing this for a Science Fair, and I am testing the effects of a chemical on a plant, which is in turn being fed to the ants. I need a plant that my ants will eat. Any ideas? And I have about three weeks to a month to grow this plant, and it is Winter, which makes it even harder, but I am planning on growing it inside. Any ideas on a plant to feed ants with? I am dealing with the large ants that live near my home in Gilbert, Arizona if that helps. There are two types of ants that I can tell and I am dealing with the big ones (if that makes any sense). They might be fire ants, but I have a hard time telling. The picture below is not one I took, it's from google, so it's not exact, but something like that. Thank you!

Punctuation Addictions

This seems odd -- but is anyone "addicted" to a punctuation mark? As in, you use it way more than you should, and incorrectly. As you can see, I'm addicted to the em dash (slightly longer form of "-", then en dash, I type it as "--"). I even use it when I'm writing :PI use them in places of commans -- but I'm not sure how my head works to decide which one to use.On IMs, I use "XD" way to much, simply because at first I had lol, then :P (which I've always loved), and XD is just the next thing. However, after setting up my client to change XD into "lmao" -- it broke my habit, probably because lmao seems "too much" for how funny it is, so I'd subconciously use :P next time. People who don't know me think I'm going into fits of laughter when I say "XD" -- even though it just means "I aknowledge that you said something that is mildly funny, but probably didn't laugh"(Whoahh... rambling alert!)Anyway, do you have an addiction? (Just a note: I didn't go back and add --'s for effect, so this goes to show how much I use them :P)

Super cooled Water

Hey all, I wasn't able to find where a short discussion about Super cooled water was posted not long ago, and I wanted to relate this incident; so if I get no replies, that is ok. I just thought it was kind of neat the way this occurred. Last night, well, I guess it was actually this morning ( 00:30 ), I left work and went to my car, got myself situated, and before driving off, I grabbed a bottle of water that was in the cup holder. I distinctly remember shaking it to make sure the water was NOT frozen. I also took note that the bottle was partially imploded; something I would have expected as the temp was down to about 17 o F. When I opened the bottle, put it to my mouth and tilted it, the unexpected happened. Between the moment of releasing the vacuum that had formed and my trying to drink from the bottle ( about 3 seconds), the water froze to a Slushy consistency. For a moment I was perplexed why I was getting no water in my mouth, and then it slid from the bottom, and it stopped at the neck of the bottle. I had forgotten that this could happen. I must have sat there looking at it for a good 2 minutes trying to get something out of the bottle, when I thought I would blow some warm air into it. The bottle inflated slightly, and the air passed by the slush, and when I released, I got a face full of slush. I had to laugh at myself all the way after that little incident. :-)

Seeing Auras & Ghosts

I have posted this on other forums without much response. Since some of the best minds use this site, I should get a lively response. Friday, on a TV show called 20/20, they interview some kids that said they see auras and spirits. Do any of you know people who can do that? I have tried to see or photograph auras without success. It seems that these things may be visible either in the ultraviolet or far infrared and require someone with eyes that are more sensitive to these wavelengths. Young kids would be better at that. Infrared and ultraviolet light (UV) are in our environment, even though we can't see it. You would expect that different people would look different under UV, just as they do under visible light. Additionally, some things show fluorescence under UV. Perhaps auras are differing fluorescence by individuals as seen by those with extended visual response. It might be interesting to look at various people under just UV or just infrared (perhaps using night goggles) and note the observations. It would be interesting to have someone view auras through various filters to see how the auras change. Are auras affected by magnetic fields? Would smoke in the air have an effect? Does the aura look better with a dark background? Does getting drunk help? Ghosts are probably more difficult. It is to be expected that God doesn't want us asking them sensitive questions (like "Where's Heaven?"). ~Bob~

57-Storey Death ray

Concave, polished, and 57 stories tall - the Vdara Hotel in Las Vagas could be the world's largest death ray... Reports are cropping up around the web that the smooth curved surface of the hotel focuses the Sun's rays into a patch around 10 feet across in the pool area, soon after noon. Fortunately, the glass disperses around 70% of the solar energy falling on it, otherwise lawyer Bill Pintas might not be here to tell the tale; After a brief dip in the hotel pool, Pintas was sunning on a recliner. He was on his stomach, relaxed, eyes closed. But suddenly, the lawyer became so uncomfortably hot that he leaped up to move. He tried to put on his flip-flop sandals but, inexplicably, they were too hot to touch. So he ran barefoot to the shade. "I was effectively being cooked," Pintas said. "I started running as fast as I could without looking like a lunatic." Then he smelled an odor, and realized it was coming from his head, where a bit of hair had been scorched. It was about 12:20 p.m., as best Pintas can recall. The hot-spot, which sweeps the entire pool area during the day, spikes at least 20 degrees above ambient temperatures, and has been seen to melt plastic bags and cups (made of plastics which melt at around 70°C (160F). Other guests, including newspaper reviewers, have also observed the burning beam. The hotel management doesn't call it a "death ray", they prefer the more friendly distinction "solar convergence phenomenon". Gordon Absher, a spokesman for MGM Mirage says the hotel is addressing the problem, and comments, "Because of the curved, concave shape of that hotel, they sometimes get isolated pockets of high temperatures." ---------------------------------- Never mind dispersing the light - get those windows polished up, and let's see how many lawyers a fifty seven storey burning glass can really deal with!
