How to build a super-thrust blower out of electric blowers to drive a paraglider ?

I want to build a paramotor which is electric and not propeller driven. Therefore, I want 'hand dryer' type blowing technology to provide sufficient thrust. Does anyone know if large super blowers are available in portable electric form ? Could this work ? How much thrust does the propeller create ?

How do I get flies out of my tent fly? How can I keep them out? Answered

When camping I have noticed that my tent fly collects loads of flies, right above the tent door. Keeping the fly unzipped overnight seems to let them out somewhat, but there are always a few. I don't imagine the flies like being trapped in there, and they annoy me with their buzzing. How can I get them out or keep them from getting in?

Ironman thrusters

Everyone likes to fly like ironman but he uses high technology like plasma, repulsors to fly which are still in research. But i have an idea , with enough pressure, air compressor can be used to lift us like flyboard but they are little heavy, but it can be modified. so tell me your ideas in this forum. Air extinguisher is good but lasts for only few seconds, so share your ideas, Thanks.

I can't identify this fish. Please Help!

I have a question about fish....I don't know if anyone can answer it though... I found a fish once while fishing in southern Indiana, it looked very similar to a pike, I was fishing with a dry fly on the top of the water, the fish went under it and sucked it in. Does anyone know what kind of fish it was. And I already know it wasn't a catfish.

How can you somehow create a way to electronically count the number of bats going in and out of a bat house?

For my Advanced Biology class at school I am thinking about starting a bat project. I have a way to measure the temperature and humidity of the inside of the bat boxes, but would really like some sort of sensor to count how many bats are in there...and manually isn't going to work so well. Any suggestions? Any other bat-related ideas? (Other than selling bat guano...already been suggested) thanks

Can we fight back Big Brother?

Conoy Township in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; is voting to avoid flying surveillance remote controlled aircrafts above their skies. In a time when the United States government approves the use of drones to spy on the civilian population, I have found interesting how people are responding. This municipal ordinance definitely will not stop the use of drones on this area if deemed necessary for our national security but I wonder if this could be the start of a trend.

How would you trap fruit flies so that you could feed them to foul (chickens, ducks, etc.) and fish? Answered

I've often marvelled at how fast fruit flies appear after dumping a fresh supply of the morning's fruit juicer cocktail mush on the top of our worm box. How can I trap those insects _economically_ and then feed them to livestock? Chickens, duck, fish etc. would readily gobble the fruit flies up IF the flies weren't flying around... how would you capture lots of wild fruit flies? I have been thinking about a trap that allows them to fly in but not fly out and then throwing the trap into a freezer to slow them down and then throwing them to the birds... but I'd like to find something that could be done entirely outdoors WITHOUT electricity. Ideas?

Reuse parts of an old tent? Answered

I have a basic 3 person dome tent from canadian tire that i have no use for. It has got the tent, the rain fly, pegs ...everything. I have a nicer one now and before i give it away, i was thinking if there is any way parts of this can be reused in any way? the rain fly is waterproof...so maybe a waterproof bag....and what about the real tent? I always thought that when the ground is wet, it helps to put something on the ground before you pitch your tent so that the base does not get cold and wet. Is there a way some kind of eater/heat insulator can be made out of the old tent?

Dude plans to jump from a plane and land on his belly. Really.

Jeb Corliss has leaped from buildings and other places in a single bound. Now, he plans to do it without the aid of a parachute.Corliss, who is a base jumper, has made jumps in 16 countries and five contents, more than 1,000 in all, from the likes of the Eiffel Tower and Golden Gate Bridge. His latest venture is trying to jump from a helicopter and land without using a parachute.Corliss says he’ll wear a wing suit, which makes him look like a flying squirrel. He plans to landing on a specially designed runway he designed. It will cost up to $2 million. Once he gets the funding for his project, he says it could take up to four months to actually pull off.He added, “A wing suit, basically, is fabric that goes between your arms and between your legs and it changes the shape of your body. So you become, in essence, a flying squirrel.'He explains that he plans to land on his belly, suggesting, "œImagine an aircraft. Aircraft don't land on their tails, they land on their bellies. That's exactly what I'm gonna become. I'm gonna become an aircraft. I'm gonna be landing on my belly. Why in the world would Corliss try this?"œI wouldn't say I'm doing this because I'm a thrill-seeker. I'm a person who has dreams and my life is based on making those dreams come true. And that's what I focus on."

Blue/Black wasp under our pool deck. How do I get rid of them when I can't see the nest?

So we have an inground pool with a wooden wrap around deck.  These humongous black wasps with a bluish sheen fly around and are everywhere out there. We see them carrying grasshoppers and taking them between the wooden slats under the deck.  We abandoned our pool early in the season because they are very aggressive. Obviously if we are out there we are swimming, walking on the deck, jumping, playing music and what not.  This appears to annoy them.  I cannot see any nests but there must be several down there because they go in all over the place.  Help.  What can I do to get rid of them so they don't come back next year?

New Fully Automatic system

For the past 2 days I've been working on a new fully automatic mechanism, and heres how it works. This new system uses a 'Rack and pinion' which starts off with the pinion pulling back the firing pin until it has no more teeth to grip to the firing pin with so it lets go and the firing pin goes flying forward shooting the bullet. after this the firing pin is returned back to its original position it is ready to be pulled again, this all takes around 2 seconds. Range: around 15ft(Blue rod) Firing rate: every 2 sec remember this gun is only a prototype so suggestions are welcome (needs a hopper), and remember that this gun only uses a weak motor so if you were to use a motor like the one a on oodalumps machine gun and with that you could possible double the range and firing rate! Enjoy:)

How to cool an outboard motor without using water?

I am wanting to build a personal ultralight helicopter. First issue here is to find a suitable engine. Outboard motors have the 40+ horsepower I need and can be found pretty cheaply on places like craigslist. One thing I know about these engines is that they use a water pump to suck up water and cool the engine. It is important that this water is present and can the engine can be wrecked if it is run without water for more than a minute or two. Short of including a water tank on this helicopter, do any of you have any practical solutions to keep an engine like this cool? (Just so you know, an "ultralight" helicopter must weigh under 249 pounds without the passenger. In the US, you can fly ultralights without a pilots' license. 40hp outboard motors weigh around 160lbs so I don't have a lot of room for heavy water.)

Help! photos, diagrams, etc required for Himmelstürmer

hello, I need some diagrams or sketches or photos of the german Himmelstürmer. If you have scale or measurements, that would be even better. one sounds like a simple enough device, and I would like to make it as a fun project. and post it up as an ible. all I know is that it consisted of two pulse jets and fuel tank(s). one small jet pointed down and was attached to the front of the user, the other larger one pointed at a downwards angle. fuel was stored on the front of the person. the engines did not run long enough to heat up, so there is no heat protection. it was used by throttling the engines, which would push the wearer into the air and forwards, allowing jumps of 60 meters distance and up to 50 feet height. I just need details of the, well, the entire device. the attached picture is just an artist impression of the device. I have no idea how to mount it to the user in a non-permanent way, and I need dimensions and such to allow it to be safe. I really don't want to make a device for an ible that could blow up the user. Thanks!

Homebuilding of experimental aircraft?

Hello Instructables I am a professional aerospace engineer who homebuilds aircraft in my garage when not doing so for work.  I live and work at the Mojave Airport which is a hotbed for aircraft homebuilding stretching all the way back to the 80's.  The experimental aircraft community does not have anything like what you all are doing on this website.  When I found your site the first thought was that I had finally found the place to talk about buillding airplanes.  But I see no such topics on the site.  While fundamentally I assume the problem is only that the channel has not yet been created or there is a liability problem, I wonder if there isn't more to it.  Is the thought of designing and building and flying your own airplane not as awesome for others as it is for those of us who live in Mojave?  Is there something that can be done to make this exciting world more exciting to people (like yourselves) who take such pride and make such investments in doing cool stuff in your garages? How do i make extreme firecracker that will do REALLY BIG BOOM?

I found a store in nearby that selling fertilizers and stuff for pyrotechniks, So i dont think there will be a problem of getting the ingridients i need. I want it very very loud and i will explain it to you why: In israel, we celebrate purim by wearing custums and disguise and of course using firecrackers, you need to understand somthing, there is a "law", somthing "between the lines" that the more boom your firecracker made, the more respect it is! meaning the more you enjoy and love purim, so in purim, childrens (13+) and adults are going to buy firecrackers and try to "show off" to their friands that they celebrating purim and using firecrackers. As you guys understand I dont want it to fly, or makes colors , sing or dance. My plane and wish is that it will go BOOM, and i mean it, and the bigger Boom it makes, it's the better!! I already have expirience about making firecrackers and explosives so no worry about the safety thing. P.S sorry if it was too long, i just wanted to give you the prespective and the feeling of the most happy holiday in the jewish religion and colture :D

Injured Frog/Toad what do I do?

The frog/toad looks to be a American toad. It has a best described as a shaved head. It has a hole on the front of it's head that leads into it's mouth. It looks to be missing an eye as well. It seams to have an injured limb on it's front left. It has been alive for over 16 hours, it seams to have gotten better than when we first found it. We have fed it dried blood worms. We have not seen it eat them but they are gone from the make shift enclosure. I am worried that it may not be able to survive in the wild if we release it after it heals. That is if it heals. I just don't know what to do, please help. NOTE the water got the chemicals removed before we put it in there. We also tried to get the grass off of it by using water (again without chemicals) but we couldn't get all of it off.           We found out it has Toad Fly ( I think that is what it is called ). I am so glad It wasn't me who ran it over with a lawnmower the other day. I still feel sad for it though.

Art room wars in Grade 8

I shall enlighten you all with a story from my early youth (last year). I suppose I will start off by saying that the art teacher at St. Andrew Jr. School in Antigonish, NS has an unholy amount of Jenga blocks. Thousands and thousands. Don't get me wrong, Mrs. Donna Woolaver is a great art teacher, but she doesn't take her job as seriously as some might say she should. That being said, she often showed up 10-20 minutes later than the rest of my class showed up to class. A disagreement between a few of my peers would often result in a seperation of my class into two sides. A jenga block would be thrown. Everyone ducked under their desks for cover as another great Battle commenced. People running, Blocks flying everywhere. Someone screams. No one cares.Chaos, pure chaos. You'd band together with a group of friends and cover each others asses as you would try to disable someone from the other side. After all the brave ones were injured and broken, the shy and the cowardly would come out from under their desks in utter shock. And the art class would begin. We never got caught. Amen.

Minimalist survival kit help

I'm looking at a new prospective for a survival kit. I have an I.N.C.H. bag that i use camping. While I can pack it down to almost nothing, I dont use many of the bigger items. I was looking for ways to essentially minimize my bag. While I'm experience with the great outdoors, the minimalist aproach is a relitivly new concept to me. I want to base the kit on the ten essentials. I live in a harsh enviroment so I'd likely not be changing my shelter much. The shelter is already pretty basic.  This is my must-have gear: Map, Compass, Sunglasses, Extra clothing (a skivvy roll and what I'm wearing plus my hoody and ponchos), Illumination (Preferably no batteries), First-aid supplies, Firestarter, Matches, Knife and Extra food. My current sleep system is as follows: Medium Weather sleeping bag with compression sac, Compact collapsible cot, Goretex bivvy sac, Sleeping role and Grommeted space blanket. I'm more worried about weight than size. I will likely switch the cot for a hammock because it's pretty sizey and the metal rods make half the weight of the system. For food I was thinking keep my hobo stove and boyscout mess kit but im considering adding a hobo fishing rig. My current fishing kit is a multi function compact pole with a fly reel and spin cast reel. While very light weight it takes up some space. About 1.5'x8"x4" roughly. any ideas on additions or subtractions for the kit? I'm mostly trying to reduce weight. I'm strong but lugging around a ruck sack takes more than a simple backpack with this and that.  Any ideas are apreciated. I don't need a whole lot to live comfortably in the woods. The picture is of my I.N.C.H. bag pack in to my freighter frame. The black box is the fishing kit, the blue sac is the cot. Inside the pack is the sleeping bag bulging out. It's Probably my biggest item and in this pic is not in its compression sac as the sac was 'misplaced' while moving. I guess I'm asking for advise on downsizing the I.N.C.H. bag...

Did you miss me?

You may have noticed that I mysteriously stopped posting for a couple of days. I've been camping! I came on as a last-minute substitute when another leader was unexpectedly hospitalised, and whizzed off to Gilwell 24 with a small group of our Explorer Scouts. It's an awesome event for teenage scouts - from 09:00 Saturday, to 09:00 Sunday, 24 hours of non-stop activities without the requirement of sleep.  Four thousand Explorer Scouts took up the challenge, and almost all of them managed a full 24 hours of extreme Scouting. 3G Swing Archery Bushcraft Zone Bouldering Campfire Climbing (Outdoor rock and revolving wall) Craft zone Crate stacking Disco Fairground Flying Trapeze Geocaching Giant games Gilwell gauntlet Global Zone - including Shelterbox High ropes course Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting Mountain boarding Orienteering Outdoor arena Quad Bikes Outdoor Woodland Quaser Raft Racing / Boat Racing Rifle Shooting Competition Scavenger hunt Scuba Diving Slacklining Speed climbing Segways Simulators Technology zone Water rockets Assault Course Car driving Go Karts Power Boking Inflatables Fire Building Fishing Military Activity Team Speed Stacking Caving Zorbing As well crafts and other activities going on all the time (I had my first go at wood-turning at 14:00, and was soldering together an AM band radio at 22:30 (goodness me, the writing on a capacitor gets small later at night!)). Add to that a month's rain in about 20 hours, giving liquid mud on the scale of Glastonbury, it's hardly a surprise that every single Explorer fell asleep on the train home. Because my standing-in was very short notice, none of my electronics were properly charged, but I did get a few snaps of the atmosphere before my iPod completely died. I have never been so wet or so dirty on a camping trip, and I was taking it easy - it's the first time I've been forced to pack my tent away wet and muddy at the end of a camp. If you're a Scout or an Explorer, and will be over 13½ next July, why not take up the challenge yourself? If you fancy taking part, offering an activity, or otherwise getting involved in next year's event, they are already taking comments and ideas.  If you're not in Scouting, and didn't realise it was so awesome (or that girls are allowed at any age), then why not think about joining? (As an aside, I'd never seen Rock-It-Ball being played before.  Looks fun.)

Fishing the traditional way

A while ago I had a very bad day of fishing in terms of catching something for my frying pan or freezer.Same story for the old bloke sitting a few meters away from me.So we decided to pass some time with useless chats about our previous record fish we caught. While the old bloke changed bait I noticed that he did not have a hook at the end of the line.....What is that contraption and how do you catch fish with it?Old bloke laughed and said he goes hunting a lot too and always keeps the antlers from deer and such.Instead of a hook he used a round and pointy bar with a little notch slightly off the middle.Couldn't figure out how this possibly could hook a fish, so got a bigger laugh for it this time :("Make a loose fist, put it in and then pull on the line." he said and I was dumb enough to assume it would not work :(Figure it out by getting two bleeding pricks...Fish swallows the "stick" inside the bait and one there is some pull one pointy end will always get stuck. The other moves until there is no room to move anymore and the fish is spiked up for good.Only downside is that one you get a fish too big it might not grab - bad luck then LOLThis approach instead of steel hooks reminded me of the bamboo fishing poles my grandfather used to make.Be it for eel, trout, carp or even from the boat for pollock and sardine - he loved his bamboo.Even made me my fisrt fly fishing rod from a piece of bamboo :)The old guy however had more than hand made rods or horn needles as hooks. When his hands were still as good as his eyes he even made flies from these horn sticks! He explained the process to me but I never had the patience for normal flies and doing this with horn sticks and estimating how big the biggest fish might be while making sure it is neither too heavy nor fails to float...What I really liked about this otherwise wasted fishing day was the stories I got from the old man."You don't need fancy or oversensitive gear to fish, a safety pin and some packing coad do just fine if you are hungry!"Best story was how he caught a 2m gummy shark with a hand line meant to catch some sardines for bait.I could really his 3 hour struggle to get the thing on board LOLWhat are your most successfull old school or just plain weird catches with something a real sports fisherman would not even touch to cast?
