BIKE GENERATOR?!

Hey, I'm much more of a mechanical guy than an electrical one, and yeah, I'm trying to be won over, but I think this project might help me bridge the gap if I can get it rolling. what do you guys think about buying maybe six or so friction light generators and disconnecting the lights, putting two on the front wheel, four on the rear, (they rub on the side of the tire) and wiring them all together to produce a power source? like I said, I'm horrible with electrical stuff- maybe you could even build a larger generator like I saw in another instructable, but do you think it'd be possible to either create a car-adaptor-style outlet, or even a functioning regular power outlet with that idea? what about an electric bike that charges itself while pedal in that sense? talk to me people!

Frictionless generator for a bicycle? Answered

Right now I have a 12 volt 5 amp Werker lead acid battery powering lights, cell chargers, gps, and a few other gadgets.  When I go on long trips I take the batter charger with me to charge the battery with a wall charger.  The wall charger is heavy and unnecessary if i could find a way to harness the power I generate when I pedal.   i have seen plenty of generators which generate electricity by physically touching a dynamo to the tire but there must be a way to do it inductively, with no friction.  What if I covered the wheel with hard drive magnets and ran them all past a coil on the frame?  I know magnets going past coils will make electricity but not about rectifiers and capacitors and etc.  How could I make this? Thank you

12 Volt Gas Generator

I am looking to building a 12 volt generator from an alternator. I want it to have a car battery (or a deep cycle battery if it's easy to integrate) for quiet operation. I want the output to equal that of a 12V car plug socket so I can easily invert it to 110 volt AC. the engine will need to be small as possible without stalling on high demand. I guess it would have to have the same circuitry of a cars main power circuit. So, can someone give me a few tips on making this? And most importantly, a schematic. I can't seem to find a basic car circuit.

What is the best wire for generating heat? Answered

I am making an Instructable for some contests. The basic concept is below: -Put two peltier modules on each bloodline on the neck -Put small heat sinks that takes advantage of wind on the other sides of the peltier modules -Use the electricity generated by the peltier modules (While skiing in ~20F) on a heat-generating device located near the hands -Cover the parts that I can with some fabric and possibly build it into a neck warmer or face mask So my question here is: What kind of wire should I use to generate the heat on my hands? I'm looking for high-efficiency and fast to generate the heat Also, do you see any flaws in my concept that I should change? Lastly, the most important question I feel I should ask here is: Will the peltier modules generate enough electricity to make a significant difference on the heat of my hands? My hands get cold enough to hurt when I go back into room temperature if that helps.

VAWT a new way to wind generation

Guys need help to realise its feasiblity and pros & cons. This project will comprise of a renewable energy source which is controlled by TI msp430 controller by closed loop system. This renewable energy source will use a magnetically levitated vertical axis wind turbine with single phase permanent magnet alternator made by our team. There will be 3 stationary wind guide vanes/flaps of concave shape on the outer periphery of turbine. These vanes will be controlled by dc gear motor for constant wind flow and protection against high speed winds. Using perturb & observe MPPT algorithm on DC-DC boost converter, constant DC voltage for GRID integration is made. A lower energy Bluetooth module will send data on user computer about whole system parameter, hence making the whole system to be smart and hence data is saved in database. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fC5hYLjhO9U OR YOU CAN SEE https://www.instructables.com/id/Building-a-new-type-Vertical-Axis-Wind-Turbine-VAW/

Would a high wheel bike generate be more efficient than a typical stationary bike generator?

High wheel bikes have a bigger wheel that would turn the generator more often per pedal.   right? Would there be a greater mechanical advantage? or would it just increase the work load like going into a higher gear?

Greetings from sunny Croatia! I want to use some generic DC engines to produce electricity using wind. I'll connect DC engine to windmill thing, when it spins it generates about 0.25-0.35V. And while it spins it charges batteries during the day, when night falls down the LED strip/strips turn on and use power from batteries that were charched during the day. Is it possible to make? Could I use dynamo from old bycicle? Thanks again, and sorry for bad English!

Assuming that I properly insulated the system, would it be practical to use mains power in a hydrogen generator? Ignition Source?

I'm looking for a way to ignite butane/propane almost remotely or by button. Basically, I would like to make a spark generator. I've looked into piezos but they can be hard to press down. I'm looking for something that I can attack to a softer button. I've seen negative ion generators and ignition coils with 555's but I would like to know which would be more reliable. The ion generator would be cheaper, smaller and lighter but is it as reliable as a ignition coil? Also, if there is an easier/cheaper way, please point me in the direction of such device. Any and all feedback or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Wondering if it is possible to create a power source . I camp alot and cant stand the sound of a generator. wondered if steam power would be enough to recharge a battery ( 12 volt) that runs all night hooked up to a fan . ( probably a Usb sized ) just enough to move the air around the tent .  just thinking aloud here but is there a way to make a home made steam generator? boiling water causes fans to rotate, in turn this causes a electric charge .  I am also looking into wind powered. most the places i camp can be a tiny bit drafty.  during the day solar power could be used. also

Dice-o-Matic

The Dice-o-Matic is "a 7 foot tall, 104 pound, dice-eating monster, capable of generating 1.3 million rolls a day." It was built and is used by the owner of a gaming website, who received too many complaints of insufficient randomness on his previous computer-generated dice-rolling strategies. It is true that computers cannot generate TRULY random numbers... The Dice-o-Matic, however, is exactly as random as an actual dice roll. Because it does actually roll dice! A LOT OF DICE!More info, including an awesome video of it in operation, here.

How to Generate low pressure air 0.8 psi for pallet gardens? Stirlinge engines, fluidyne? How?

My pallet garden project is a big success. It works great and it is becoming simpler and cheaper to do over time. It uses aquarium bubble pumps to produce low pressure air and this air is used to airlift pump water that circulates to the plants in the garden  in an endless loop.   I measured a few days ago and my bubble pump is producing 22 inches water pressure (0.8 psi) at the pump and 60 litres per hour of air at this pressure and this drives all the pallet gardens at a great distance (100 ft ) from the pump. I use a 3.5 watt air pump. I would just  love it if it could be off grid, and driven by solar heat in a low tech way.    Anyone want to try to do this?  Because then it is of great value in poor countries.   Just to give you an idea of how little heat you need to make this pressure.  If you heat air from 20 degrees C to 36 degrees C  (68 F to 97 F)  in a closed container, you get 0.8 psi pressure increase in the container!  That is the bar, and it would be really hard to set it lower than that!    I do not yet understand stirling engines or fluidyne pumps but I think they could do this.  If I try it, I will have cylinders of air alternatively heating and cooling  in the sun and valved to pump the air in one direction.  But if you are clever, I am sure you can do better than that with fluidyne or flutterwing wind power. I would love to see some comments and interest in this.   It IS working and people are going to be very interested as gardening season gets into full swing.    Playlists are http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL00C41C26C91A76BB&feature=view_all for the pallet gardening and http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkzXlmAwZTZcHUq4YX8__3qLEJIIzTduW&feature=view_all for some amazing alternative wind, water and solar machines. The other is smaller @ 3600rpm, 7.5 amps, 120 volts, 60hz, 900 watts and approximately 1.2 hp. Can I use either of them to make a wind turbine and how much power will each generate? What would I need to convert them to generate power? I'm a novice so please keep the technical language to a minimum. Thanks.

For our holiday party, Instructables and a few members of Potenco went trampolining at Sky High Sports. Sky High is essentially a couple of basketball-court-sized areas filled with trampolines. Wood gasifiers and safety - Carbon Monoxide poisoning - hospital

Sorry if it is in the wrong section of the forum. If it can be moved to a better place then do so. This is a quick mention to anyone that is playing around with any burners such as:    wood gas generator    bio-gas    wood gasifier    'hobo' stove I am not severely concerned but it did happen, I think it needs a mention, as it is for everyone's safety. After playing with wood gas and attempting methanol creation from a small gasifier unit for a few weeks, I had started to realize that each day I had a most annoying headache / migrane in my frontal area of my brain / head. They ended up getting so bad that my body could not tolerate them anymore and started to go into shock, causing a rather painful, endless throwing up session for many hours each time even.  It came to a point where after 3 weeks of playing with a bio-gas generator for about 4 hours a day had started to lead me into temporary blindness an hour and a half at a time. This was when I was concerned as I could not read any more instructables :( After a quick jot to the local doctors, I explained what I had been up to and I was correct. I had given myself the rather classic, and very close to death, carbon-monoxide poisoning where my doctor insisted I go to emergency at the hospital ( 2 hours away ) immediately and have someone else drive me. Pretty much equivalent to staying inside a garage with your car running for 5 hours, all the doors closed. I was very close to severe carbon monoxide poisoning and death.  At the hospital, blood was taken, analysed, and they had discovered large traces of C02 that they attempted to flush with some oxygen, but this only works to a point and they mentioned that nothing else could be done apart from telling me not to use or be near any smoke sources for at least 3 weeks and I should recover fine. I am still playing with my wood gas generators, and attempting to make methanol, but these days, after 3 days ago, I take further safety precautions to make sure it wont happen again. Such as: ventilation / exhaust fan ( I WAS OUTSIDE WHEN I WAS POISONED! DONT TAKE THIS LIGHTLY! ) keep a distance, find a better way to ignite / extinguish the burner keep your face and body out of the smoke dont watch the flames / smoke from above for any longer than 2 seconds do not taunt the Criosote by-product of wood. I am not sure which is more toxic. The smoke or this.   ( criosote / bio-crude, whatever you want to call it, it is the condensate of the burner unit containing more chemicals, very stinky) do not store criosote indoors withough a sealable container ( the smell likes to soak into things, like my kitchen ) if you know what you are doing, keep oxygen tank nearby use all protective clothing and masks, etc. There was a small arrogance in my head when playing with these units. And that is simply that I was thinking 'it is just smoke'. Wood gas generators are generating a much more toxic smoke than just sitting around your camping fire and should not be considered to be something to play with, without proper valves, pipes, burn off points etc. It contains on some scale: carbon-monoxide, methane, acids ( acetic ), tar and many other defects that will cause you issues if you are not careful. Keep it safe guys, this was a rather difficult one for explination, but I do not want someone other than me to be in that same sickness / position as I was with the poisoning, as it is the most painful experience I had yet had.  Worse than me hitting a tree head on at 80km/h. Worse than falling 2 stories off a cliff onto rocks. Worse than being hit by a car and thrown over it's windscreen. Worse than the feeling of an unsuccessful home made rocket launch. All of these above I have had happen to me, and the poisoning was by far the worst and I was scared more for my life than than any above accidents. It is not a very nice feeling, it is a deathly, sickly, useless feeling, blindness is not far away from death if found in this situation. Oxygen / fresh air is the only thing to help you if poisoned, even if in hospital. Keep it safe guys. If you want me to write up a full on poster on wood-gas / wood-heater safety I can or even just a propper write - up on general safety with this smoke and the wood gas units etc. Ask please and I will. Hospital staff will most likely give you 'items of interest' for instructables if you just ask them too. I have a heap of things from a stethoscope to vials to 'red dots' for homemade ECG machines. They tend to like crazies like me that make weird stuffs .. i hope ive gotten the point across anyway.
