Replacing a Pentair Pleated cartridge?

Oh this is not funny. I am trying to replace the cartridge not clean it, that's easy. With this cartridge you must take the hard plastic core out of the old one ad put it back into the new one. I have no idea how to get it back in there. The top of the cartridge hole is very rubbery. So the plastic core will not slide easily. Let me know if you figure it out.[some time this summer] since it only has to be replaced once every 6 years or so.

Dumpster Pools Invade Brooklyn

Over in Brooklyn, some overheated and dedicated folks have turned some dumpsters into pools for their very own urban pool party. Not too shabby for a budget of a few thousand bucks. I wonder if they can connect them together to get a proper bit of space to swim in.via Treehugger

Swimming pool cleaner/filter

Hello, I have an old (about 50 years) 50.000 liters (13 208.6026 US gallons) swimming poll that doesn't have any kind of cleaning or filtering machinery (if you know what I mean) so it's just like buried water tank :). The problem is that it's often filled with grass, leaves and bugs that sink to the bottom of the pool and I don't know how to get rid of them. I have a water pump that I use to empty the pool that takes about 2 liters/second that I'd like to use to "vacum" clean the pool floor but I don't really know how Any ideias? thanks!

Will painting a swimmimg pool a dark color promote algae to grow more than a light colored painted pool?

I am picking a new color for my inground swimming pool with filter no heater. Wanted to change to color from a basic light blue to a more modern darker color.  Was told dark colors allow algae to grow more than light colors.  Any truth to that statement?  Also because the pool is not heated which color would help keep the water warm?  I am guessing that a dark bottom pool would be warmer than a light bottom pool.

Thoughts on this method to heat my pool? Answered

So, I have an intex easy-set 12' pool. We have finally leveled the ground and re-filled it and it works great. I live in Texas the swim season is pretty long already. I have this all rigged up with a bungee cord tether so I can swim in place for exercise. I dug out the center to give me another foot depth where I needed it. I also have a solar cover and the entire thing is covered by an elevated parachute tent for shade/wind block. (Also modesty). For now the water warms up significantly enough by about 10 am without much heat loss at night. I have thought long an hard and this is what I have come up with to heat it during the colder months. I can build a typical solar collector with hoses and hook it to either my saltwater sand pool pump or the cheapy pool pump it came with (which would be better?) then put it on top of a metal roof piece in the yard slightly elevated from rain water, then attach radiant floor heating mats underneath it. I am hoping this would provide a boost of heat on less sunny days or when it is significantly cold, like December. With a much cheaper energy bill. I am guessing I will need to insulate the heating things a bit or something. Feel free to suggest anything. I am just kinda in plan mode atm.

How can you keep horseflies away from a pool area? Answered

So, I was swimming at my friends pool today, and 5 of us were bitten by horseflies multiple times. Is there any kind of natural repellent to keep horseflies away from their pool area? Also, they have a bunch of flowers around the pool, so if there is anyway to repel just the horseflies, and not the pollenating bees, that would be great.

How do I lower the water level in my pool without removing salt at the same time?

Every year to winterize my pool I lower the water level below the skimmer by pumping water out of the pool.  Since I switched to salt, this means I will be pumping about 120kg of salt out as well which I would like to save for economic and environmental reasons. How do I drop the water level but retain the salt in the remaining water in the pool? Reverse Osmosis? Large black tarp that will allow evaporation of the water and trap the salt? Get creative.

How do I Keep a Swimming Pool Clean?

I have a pool in my yard that nobody has used for years.  I would love to backfill it with dirt but my wife says no.  I am getting sick and tired of using "human safe" chemicals to keep it clean, especially as it still gets algae during our hot Las Vegas summers. Blue/Black wasp under our pool deck. How do I get rid of them when I can't see the nest?

So we have an inground pool with a wooden wrap around deck.  These humongous black wasps with a bluish sheen fly around and are everywhere out there. We see them carrying grasshoppers and taking them between the wooden slats under the deck.  We abandoned our pool early in the season because they are very aggressive. Obviously if we are out there we are swimming, walking on the deck, jumping, playing music and what not.  This appears to annoy them.  I cannot see any nests but there must be several down there because they go in all over the place.  Help.  What can I do to get rid of them so they don't come back next year?

Easiest route for me to take in the hopes of making a completely waterproof guitar hero/rock band controller(wireless)?

I've been looking for waterproof momentary switches, and the such, and was planning on a sort of plexiglass/silicon enclosure for the main electronics. It just has to be playable, not looking to set any records on it, more of just something cool to play with than a rock band expert's ultimate plaything. This is for use inside of a pool at a friend of mine's pool parties (shallow end) on the projector screen. Every other part of the electronics setup is directly poolside, a safe distance away, and raise away from the pool slightly. I'm tech savvy, and could probably figure this out, but as any DIYer knows, sometimes other people see an easier way that should have been apparent from the get-go, haha.

How do I attach rocks and stones to fiberglass?

Zombie fiction: illegal in Kentucky.

A Kentucky student has been arrested under anti-terrorist legislationWinchester police say William Poole, 18, was taken into custody Tuesday morning. Investigators say they discovered materials at Poole's home that outline possible acts of violence aimed at students, teachers, and police.Poole told LEX 18 that the whole incident is a big misunderstanding. He claims that what his grandparents found in his journal and turned into police was a short story he wrote for English class."My story is based on fiction," said Poole, who faces a second-degree felony terrorist threatening charge. "It's a fake story. I made it up. I've been working on one of my short stories, (and) the short story they found was about zombies. Yes, it did say a high school. It was about a high school over ran by zombies."I originally found this story through Groxx. Homemade Water Fountain Help

Homemade Water Fountain Help So I am doing a project for my fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha, here at Ohio University. I have $150 and an awesome idea, but I am not sure how to approach it. I received this picture my dad found on the internet and I want to replicate it because it'll be cheap and fairly easy: As you can see in the pic, it is a 3 tier water fountain made of kitty pools and I would like to say laundry baskets. I love the idea of the water draining into the bottom pools and that is pretty starightforward - drill holes in the top pools. However, like any other fountain, you need a pump to bring the cold water back to the top. Again, my entire budget is $150. So the pools will be like $10-20 each, and same with two baskets. I'm pretty good with tools, so if construction of any sort needs to be done, by all means. Again, I'm not familiar with pumps, but I don't need anything extravagant. Also, our fraternity colors are gold, purple, and green. It would be sick to paint the water fountain with some cheap, waterproof paint. I can go over $150 a little if need be, but my budget is very limited - which is half the fun with this! Final thing, this needs to be able to be taken down and stored away when we're not using it. So nothing can be permanently attached. I assume then we'd have to cut holes in the middle of the pools and laundry baskets for the pump to go to the top. But then we would need some sort of sealant on the insides of the pool to keep the water in. Thanks for any and all help. I'm new to the website, and I look forward to using it more often as I see some other cool things on here!!

Hey guys, I hear alot about not using copper pipe in chloronated water and rather to use 316 stainless steel, it's just the price difference between copper and that grade steel is vast... so is there anyone that tried copper in chloronated water? And is their any other alternative tubing to copper and steel. Another design i was thinking about was maybe using a barrol, fill the barrel with water, heat the barrol to get water to near boiling, have coiled polypipe in the barrol where the pool water will run through, what you guys think?
