Duct Tape

Ok, Ok, since this *is* and outdoors group/forum, and it *is* the nature of this website:What is your favorite use for duct tape? I want to hear about and see pictures of your improvisation and creativity in the outdoors at its best, using, of course, duct tape.

You've heard of papercraft, but now tapecraft?!

Today while browsing evilmadscientist.com I found a link to this flicker set by Happy Monkey. It's tapecraft! Basically papercraft, but using tape instead. And most of the stuff is geometric figures instead of like, an Instructables robot. Here's a link to a tutorial for a dodecahedron, which looks really hard to make.I think we've got to get Happy Monkey to join Instructables ;)

How can I unjam this? Answered

I just did something very idiotic--I jammed a piece of PVC piping onto  my drill. I have no idea how to get it off. I have already tried pulling and prying on it as much as I could, and I even grabbed the PVC and gunned the drill. How can I free my drill?

Decorating bike with duct tape: weather/friction proofing help? The tape is peeling from the friction of my legs.

I was already thinking of acrylic spray since I live in rainy Portland.  Would acrylic be enough to weather and friction protect it?  Should I cover the whole shebang with clear packing tape then spray acrylic?  Would that make the clear tape opaque?  Other ideas?  Not experienced with paint, adhesives, cover stuff, etc.

I would like to make an assault boat like what the SEAL's use but I'm on a tight budget... duct tape? ... any ideas? Answered

My title kind of explains it but I would like to make an Assault Raft like what the SEAL's use. To buy one runs about 200 grand... ridiculous if you ask me but that's the way it is... I have been thinking of using duct tape and PVC, kinda following the Myth Busters template. Awesome episode I just saw! Anyways, if anyone in the Vancouver, WA area who would like to help is welcome to... other than that I could just use some help on the brainstorming. THANKS!

I just built a home hockey rink. The water finds it's way around the outside of my boards and tarp. Any help?

I used 2 x 12 boards and wrapped my tarp/liner on the outside. But I only wrapped it 2-3 inches.   I thought wrapping the liner on the outside would be best so it didn't get beat up by my little hockey players.  But in the end, it appears I needed to wrap it all the way up on the boards.  It leaks up on the low side and drains. I thought it would the water would freeze up against the board and form a "seal".   But it does not.  It appears to be a major problem.  I am thinking of taping another strip of plastic along each side, using snow/ice duct tape.  But I'm worried about it not sealing.  Any ideas on how to fix my problem would be greatly appreciated.  I don't want to/can't start over.  Thanks!

What would you suggest for a rank novice female to build as a boat with very young children ages 5 to 13?

We have a garage we can use in which to build it. For inland lake use. Any ideas out there?  What about a paddleboat?, Grandma                                            jozann@cox.net

Our latest project

Read this description: So I haven't posted anything in a long while, and, as well as work, one of the this was down to me and a few friends getting together and forming a YouTube channel called "MTNunlimited". It started out when we did drama at school (a subject which we no longer take) we had a tonne of ideas that we never got to use, and so we can now showcase them on the YouTube channel. Recently, our local youth theatre announced it's closure this Easter, and so we've decided to offer some kind of alternative to anyone who wanted to join in with amateur film-making. Our goal is simply to have fun. If you click onto our channel here, you'll see that we still have a long way to go before we're near the same calibre as a lot of current Internet filmmakers. This is why we have turned to the instructables community for support. We have a few ideas, but we would love to hear other people's thoughts on what we could possibly base a new video on. We'd also greatly appreciate any tips or tricks of the trade that we have not yet been enlightened on. Don’t consider this ‘spam’, as that’s very much the opposite of why I made this forum topic. I posted this to hear guidance and advice from people who have a bit more experience than us. Here's a little montage I made of what we do, in the form of a cinematic trailer, enjoy! And once again, thanks for any support offered :) - Lowney

Best (and inexpensive) way to warm an outdoor disability ramp?

I recently had a disability ramp built for the entrance to my home.  It is made of pressure treated lumber and deck boards.  I am putting down rolled roofing to help with slipping.  I would like to make it so that it could keep it warm to prevent snow and ice build up.  I was thinking of doing a solar water heater to feed piping underneath the ramp, but not sure if this is the best way to go.  I also considered purchasing some sort of heat tape to go under the rolled roofing.  What does the community think?

Snowboard Paintjob

Here are some shots of the top and bottom...first is the top and the second is the bottom. I have yet to try it out but I did use a few cans of that clear enamel on the bottom and about half a can on the top to make sure it's sealed really well. How do I make this gadget waterproof?

Hi all! I'm developing an electronic application which looks more or less like the picture. Diameter abt 40 mm. I need to find a way to make this waterproof, at least down to 5 meters. Another requirement is that the 2 knobs need to have a tight wrap around them (they are tactile switches), which means that I can't just put it in a waterproof plastic bag. I have looked into shrink wrapping, which would make the 2 knobs stick out like I want, but I have understood that the seals in a shrink wrapped product are usually not too watertight. I would also like a wrapping that gives a smooth upper surface, if this is possible. Maybe shrink wrap and watertight tape over the bottom seal would work? Can you think of other ways to do it? Thanks in advance!

How do I clean the Poly Carbonate Holes? Answered

We have our car shed roof made from double walled polycarbonate sheets, the problem is that the fabricator at the time of fixing it to the frame forgot to put tape on the holes to avoid dirt getting in. and that time I didn't knew about it, but recently I read this and the dirt has seeped in the holes which are about 7mm square in area. I googled it with various queries but to no avail, Now please help me by giving me some direction and steps to clean it. The dirt is fine sand and some mud which seeped in with rain.  I do not want to cut replace or open the sheets just clean them. it has seeped in upto 1.5 feet (roughly half a meter). See the following images, the dirt is just dark areas the rest is just on surface.

DIVERT EARWIGS FROM WHERE WE DRY OUR HOT TUB SWIM WEAR ?

Basically wife and I enjoy an evening hot tub dip, under a deciduous tree in a large garden. Then with robes on we drop the swim wear and hang it on a wall of our house to dry. The next morning my wife usually finds a resident earwig in her swim suit. I can only surmise the larger one piece suit holds more attractive moisture for the bug which would have to travel five feet up a newly painted lap siding wall to reach a pot-metal dual hook.  There are no night lights. We live at 5500' in a desert climate and the garden is automatically watered morning and evening three times a week My wife wont let me put a 24 volt charged tape because we watch grand children daily. What to do ?

Water Bottle (Nalgene/Camelbak) Repair

My Friend,                      I decided that I did not like the color of my Camelbak water bottle. I had it hanging from the strap on my backpack as I was walking to class, and thought that I might do something about the color. I then proceeded to throw myself off of my ripstick, squarely on my back, so as to hit the bottle against the ground and break it, thereby creating the necessity of buying another. Well, it worked, and I now wish to make amends. (Long story short, [despite my previous alibi] I accidentally fell on my Camelbak water bottle, and put a breach in the base/bottom.) How might I repair this without the use of fire, (I am a little wary of melting it and releasing undesirable chemicals into my drinking water) duct tape or some other highly unsavory method of repair? (Slightly unsavory methods are just fine) Thank you for your advice!                                                                                                                               Much Obliged,                                                                                         One Moore Guy

How can I make a fireworks fuse without having to buy all those rare chemicals?

I have been looking around over all of the internet for a simple and good way to make a fireworks fuse. And I have found nothing. Nothing at all. I live in Sweden where we don't have as much material that you in America could find in regular Groscerystores, which sucks. The best supplies I can find here is regular salpeter (which is now in a process of crystalisation), matches and lighters. This is not enough, that is where the fuse breaks in. I've been using worthless hours of work to try and find out how you could make a fuse of ragular matches or even salpeter and sugar. But all this gluing and taping, it's just not worth it! So if somebody has an answer for my question, then please answer it; How can I make the fuse with matches, string and so on..?

What Should I Do With This?

Hi Folks!I would like to propose a new topic, please let me know if it's already hiding somewhere on the site and I've missed it. This might require a whole section to handle all of the possible separate threads, not sure...It's called "What Should I Do With This?"...I have several weird items in my possession that I KNOW have greatness lurking within them, but I'm at a loss about how best to unlock their potential. I'm sure lots of other folks are in the same boat. So here's the idea:We post a photo and/or description of the item, and ask what to do with it. Readers can offer suggestions (hopefully something besides "give it to me!"), advice, etc. Then when/if the advice is taken, we make an instructable, or at least reply to the thread with the results. For example (I'll post pix if I can), I have an ancient external, ~5 lb serial-port CD player in a serious metal housing about a foot long with a power supply built in. What's especially nice is the huge sticker along the side of the silly beast that says "PORTABLE" in huge block letters. It's crying out to be the platform for some device, just not sure what.Another item is a big Fostex 1/2" 8-track reel-to reel with a bad (and I'm told, prohibitively expensive to replace) tape head. So it's got a smooth, quiet & powerful motor (or two), eight analog meters, lots of RCA in & out ports, plus switches, leds, and pulleys for aligning and running the tape. I'm thinking a belt drive for a Van De Graaf, maybe some random dancing needle meters for various projects...See what I mean? I'm sure somebody has some ideas for the bits and pieces I haven't even mentioned, or a better way to re-purpose the entire apparatus without reducing it to it's components.Maybe if somebody was looking for input and got a suggestion that they thought was amazing but outside the realm of possibility for them, they could offer to send the item to the person who made the suggestion (if the recipient paid shipping, of course). But for the most part, I think sharing ideas would be most valuable. What do you think? And, perhaps even more importantly, what should I do with the stuff described above? Thanks!!Mike

All this CSI Bull****

Well, as I'm watching a csi clone as many people will know as Crossing Jordan (Is she crossing a river? What a mystery all in itself). Why do these show writers think that you can do extra-ordinary technological things in their crime labs that we can't actually do in this current day and age, not nearly as well as what they show us. For example, as in pretty much every episode of CSI, there is some image, some security footage or the such, they "clear up" the image or make a shitty black and white video camera tape look crisp and sharp like it's hd and they can read the letters on a newspaper that someone is holding sitting on a bench like 500 feet away. This people is not possible, not ever. You cannot "extrapolate" pixels out of pixels that aren't already there. If your security camera is 640x480 resolution or the such, say it's pointed to your wall at the end of your living room for example. Something up close, like 5-10 feet away from the camera, the pixel representation of the actual object is fairly well represented digitally and the object is readable usually, maybe with a bit of image tweaking. But say you have a big living room and you need to read a newspaper that is strangely pinned to your wall by a stranger. If it's too far away, the camera sees a lot of the text as big blockly black or white pixels, and each bit of the newspaper isn't captured pixel by pixel, just a representation of what it would look like. But on a pixelated camera, you're never going to be able to pull pixels out of pixels that aren't there like I already said, it makes no sense. And on these csi shows, they're seen doing crazy shit like pulling a liscense plate number from a police car footage tape of the car BEHIND the cruiser by "extrapolating" the pixels they seemed to be able to read the license plate by using the left mirror of the car in front of the cruiser, and to that, this would imply that the car behind was parked to the left of the cruiser, but in reality in the show itself, the car was right behind cruiser where you wouldn't have been able to see the plate anyways.Stuff like matching blood spatter marks to certain cuts on victims or the such, I know this can and is done in real life to a certain point and degree, everything you see in csi is based apon what is used in the real force. But the difference is that in CSI it is SUPER EXAGGERATED way beyond what's possible in real life. I've finally ran out of typing energy so you guys are spared any more of my rant but holy **** I can not figure out how people enjoy CSI so much seeing as it's soooooooo fake in reality. How many other people think it's fake like me?

Would layers of microfiber cloth work as an effective N95 air filter substitute?

Hello, as many of you know, there are some devastating fires in California right now. My family and friends live nearby to these fires, and are being exposed to toxic levels of smoke and air pollution. Due to the disaster situation, many stores that sell n95 masks have sold out or are price gouging people who need them. I have been trying to figure out an effective solution where they could use household materials to approximate the particulate filtering properties of the n95 filter. I was thinking they could make some kind of respirator style mask with the main face mask made of cardboard and duct tape, ad make a "cartridge" for the mask out of a cardboard cylinder stuffed with layers of microfiber cleaning cloth, or potentially other air filtering material, or even activated charcoal if it is available.I understand that such filters are not an ideal substitute but when the air is completely off the scale for toxicity, anything is better than nothing. Does anyone have any input on this? Is this worthwhile at all? Is there another commonly available material that you would reccomend other than microfiber cleaning cloths? -ilpug
