Intro: Plastic Bag Jar Gasket and Handle

I got the inspiration for this project here: plastic bag gasket. The premise is to create a nice gasket and a handy carrying device all at the same time. I took Tim's great idea and rather than trim the bag, I used the extra raw material to create a handle.

STEP 1: Parts List:

You will need 2 things.

1 jar with a lid. I used a peanut butter jar because it was handy and it was plastic and would have otherwise gone into a landfill somewhere.

2 a plastic bag. Also handy as there are so many of them just laying about.

STEP 2: Put the Lid in the Plastic Bag

Just like the title says, put the lid inside the bag as close to the center as possible. Then screw the lid onto the jar. This will make the gasket portion of the handle and will ensure that the bag will not move for the next part of our project.

STEP 3: Make the Handle

I simply took all of the excess plastic materials of the bag and tied a knot so that the lid was now held in place. I then put more knots in a line so that there was a "rope" of plastic coming off of the gasket at the center of the lid. I left the convenient handles of the plastic bag free of the knotting so that I could use them as the handle for my jar These handles are strong and are very nice for attaching the jar to other items.

Does it wear through the bag screwing it on and off?

Not so far. I have used it quite a bit to keep things extra dry while hiking and camping and it never seems to give out. If it does eventually wear out, I will just replace it with another bag.

Good idea. I am thinking about modifying the design to make it more visually appealing, while still keeping the overall design of the gasket handle. I have been looking into cutting the leftover material into strips that I could braid into a net or rope handle.

Good idea. I use TWO polyethylene sheets under the lid of the vinyl adhesive container. That way I avoid that the lid and the container be sticked.
