30 July Site Update Feedback Answered

There was a down-time yesterday and then a few minutes later a lot of things changed. It's good to know that the staff has been working hard to make our experience better. I checked the Site Update forum thread to check for what all has been changed and there has been no recent post. So here's what all I think changed and my 2 cents:
  • Homepage top menu is different. The menu looks clean and minimalistic but it took me a while to find out what is where(as explore meant only the categories earlier). What I feel is that it seems a bit like everything has been swept under the rug. The moment you click on Explore, your senses are bomabarded with all the options: featured, all the categories(play, tech, outdoor...), contest, forum, groups, answers and even 2 contests on the right side. I think the previous menu setup provided a good balance as I didn't have to look too hard for an option(but that might be because I was used to it). If I wanted to check out the contests, it was right there. Answers, Groups and Forums were clubbed together. Explore had the various categories. To a new person the previous also advertises all the features of instructables except for just the projects. He might not click on explore now(I didn't at first).
  • Also the menu under explore now takes a while to load and I get a loader for a few seconds. The site navigation menu should be pre-loaded and not loaded when clicked as it turns user away from exploring the site further.
  • All the steps show together. Earlier it was optional and I kept the view to one step at a time, but that button is no longer there. Single step saves internet bandwidth and instructables load up faster. Now I have to scroll all the way down to view the comments. I honestly hope this is temporary and single step view will be brought back. Heavy instructables(such as with lots of images and GIFs) or with over 20 steps will take forever to load and finish off my mobile plan if I'm using internet tethering. Also it will put a pressure on authors to keep instructables small and light, hence losing quality. If there is some way to view a single step and the way to set it up has changed, please let us know.
  • The Featured top bar looks good. Thin and clean yet attractive.
  • The featured channel footer on the home page also looks really good. But there is some extra whitespace above it.
Sorry for the bashing but changes will take time getting used to. Thanks for trying to always better the site.
Are there other changes I missed? What do other members feel?

I was also confused at first and was searching for Contests and Forum pages and it took me a while to find out. Now featured instructables in all channels can be viewed by just clicking "featured" with a star icon, which brings up everything, that is a good idea.

To view each step one at a time, you can change your settings under Customize menu. Unselect the option "YES, please make ALLSTEPS the default when viewing Instructables" and you are done... Please see the screen shot below

Thanks for that option in settings antoniraj. Might come useful in the future.

The featured button is a nice addition. It was there(and still is) at the end of all the featured projects on the homepage. But now it's also on the top and more easily accessible.

Per your second point, that may be your own connection - it has no delay for me on a home wifi connection.

Your third point, re bandwidth, is interesting, and good feedback for the development team - if you are on your phone, do you not use the mobile version of the site, or the app? I would hope that they are designed to have less demand on data.

The loader isn't there for long. A second or two at max. But once when the net was extremely slow, it took longer.

I see the single step view option is back! I don't know if the dev guys read this or it was already on their to-do list, but I'm happy to have that option.

Yep, I would like to have the single step view on the mobile app as well. I browse the projects while travelling and it does consume a bit of data. Although they probably send low resolution image, and most of them load as you scroll down, having the option to view step-by-step on mobile would be super neat.

Going slightly off topic, Kiteman do you know of any future plans for adding forums to mobile app or mobile site?

I don't, I'm afraid - the Community Team are not "in the loop" regarding plans like that.

Ah ok. Hope they do provide some way to access the forums on mobile(app or web).

By the way, I got the loader again for a second because I was buffering a youtube video in another tab, even though I have 8mbps net connection. And I get no menu at all if I disconnect my wifi and try to open it.
