Arduino Pish Button code Issue

Hey all, I am having a problem with my code and was hoping someone could help shed some light on how to fix it. Below is a code for an arduino push button counter. The concept is that there are 2 buttons, an "add" button and "subtract" button. Every time add is pressed it adds 1 to the count and vice versa when subtract is hit. The code works fine until we hit double digits. Once you subtract from 1 from 10 the LCD displays 90 not 9. Not sure how to fix this, any ideas?LiquidCrystal lcd(1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7);int add=8;int sub=9; int valadd;int valsub;int count=000; int press;void setup() { lcd.begin(16,2); pinMode(add,INPUT); pinMode(sub,INPUT);}void loop() {valadd=digitalRead(add);valsub=digitalRead(sub);if(valadd==HIGH) {delay(100);press=count++;delay(250);}if(valsub==HIGH) {delay(100);press=count--;delay(250);}lcd.setCursor(0,0);lcd.print(press);}

Teachers! Let's Connect!

Hi, everyone! I'm Jess. Before joining the team here at Instructables, I was an Elementary STEM and ESE Teacher, and I have loved art and maker/DIY projects pretty much my entire life. Recently, I’ve seen some really awesome and inspiring projects and noticed that the authors were teachers, so I thought it would be cool to connect here and share what we're working on with other teachers who also love to tinker and make. I'm so excited to learn about what you all are up to and celebrate your crafty, techie, maker awesomeness! :DFeel free to say hi and share about the things you love to create or link to your most recent project in the comments below.

coin modifying laws?

So my friends and I are planning to sell, well...things (I'm not going to give out any details as of now, later) that incorporate small round metal disks. now in all of our prototypes weve used coins for our purposes and they work great. but for what we make we need to cut and sand coins in different ways. and my friends always tell me "its illegal to change money in any way." But I've heard that its only illegal to modify money to change or duplicate the amount its worth - like making a penny into a dime is illegal but making a penny pac man figure isnt. can anyone clarify this for me? I'm fine doing illegal things like modifying coins for personal use but if were going to sell these I want to be a little more clear as to what is going on.

Net-Bed / hammock style / Mattress alternative?

Hi Everyone, I saw this bed on a blog and it keeps coming back to me. Unfortunately I don't know anything about it, who made it, and how. I did some research (didn't find the source) but learned that many people consider sleeping on a hammock very comfortable. So maybe this could be used as a real bed? This is a burning question because I'll might have to buy a new mattress at the and of the month but I feel like DIY :) So, any ideas on how to build such a thing, or on how usable it is? Or maybe you are the guy in the picture? ;) Thanks, elbotho

Design criteria for Ibles....

I just noticed that we have now standards that need to be followed if you want to publish an Instructable.Standards are good but not so much if the editing options for an Ible are at a standard from the year 2000.If I had fun designing something as simple as whistle that shall be created in a 3D printer: Then why would I need images showing how I designed it?Or why would I need images for the print settings or idea behind it?A community goes both ways! The editing tools are still sub standard and the images handling is a bad joke.If I need to explain something complex with the aid of images then of course I want the images in the right spot with the text - ever thought about this or visited website that offer similar after the year 2000?Usability is not just a means to provide the same look on all browsers and devices or to be able to use the most basic way to convert a website into a PDF.Usability is also for those who create it but that part seems to be lost for years now no matter how many times people ask, suggest or comment on the problem.I have no problem making my creations available elsewhere if that is the only way out here.If you want people to create proper Instructables then for crying out loud give them the means to do so!And fix the damn category selection bogus when posting in the community section.Has no use for years but why bother to fix it....Before you guys force people doing things your way only you should consider in what times we are and how proper usability would benefit this site....

Yesterday when I tried to log in, it said my password was incorrect.  I am sure it was not.  So I had to do the reset login thing where they send a message to your email.  That message had a 21 length temporary password with letters and numbers!  21 characters!!  You would think I was trying to break into Hillary Clinton's email!!! I got logged in, changed my password.  Later in the afternoon, the same exact thing happened, with the new password.  Once again I received an email with a new 21 character temp password!!  After a couple tries I was able to get logged in and once again created another new password.... This morning, same thing!  Only this time I logged in with Google+, so I was able to log in.  But I am on my regular computer, if I try on my tablet, I can't get logged in at all!  Not even with the 21 character temp password.....I am still amazed it takes 21 characters to change a password....I think Instructables.com  can make it easier, if they can't,  maybe they can get instructions from someone on Instructables.com! BTW, I would of brought this to the attention of someone under the "Contact" category but if I clicked on any of the emails given, they would not work.  Yes I could of logged into my email and typed in their email and sent it that way.  But at this point I am tired of going back & forth so much with this website. I really enjoy this website and wish some things were not so complicated. Thank you.

I’ve recently collaborated on a few projects. Although the function works, it doesn't allow the co-author to get any credit. It seems like a simple solution would be to place the project on both author's pages. An open letter to the support and those running this website

For a few years now good people using this website tried to make suggestions, make requests or just attempted to provide helpful feedback and bug reports.Severe bugs are usually dealt with promptly and I like this very much. For everything else though at least I start to develop a feeling that tells me your end either does not listen or does not care.Users are what keeps this section and website alive.Users provide the content that allows you to place ads to make a bit of revenue.Users fill your servers with their ideas.Users are those you should help to have it easy and enjoy being an active part of the community.I won't repeat the things users stated or requested thausands of times already. But I do state that at least got enough excuses and promises over the past few years to think I am being taken for a ride. You state the users are highly valued - valued as what exactly? You suck in user's creations like a vacuum cleaner and promote it all through endless numbers of sponsored contests. You create volume and website hits only.Quality was reduced to forcing restrictions and often totally useless standards on the user. There are articles explaining what a successful Ible needs and how to write one so it fits into the greater picture here. But where is the information how to embed pictures with the text? Oh right, that would be too nice for someone doing it or reading it, so we just plaster a block of images in a meaningless location on top of the text...I was a forum admin for a few years and if there is one thing I learned from it than : Don't mess with the users by "improving" things....Sadly Instructables never got that experience and we saw a lot of "improvements" that really absolutely no one using the website wanted or needed. The storm from that again showed how badly the user is neglected here as even reverting back to something close to what worked before took many months. The request to have some sticky postings informing the user about progress and what features might come soon was rejected again and again.Although I realised the offical suggestion to rework my last Ible so it can be published was a mistake:It highlighted the expectations you have when it comes to how you want users to create their Ibles.Creativity is not just the project in question but also how the creator wants to present it here!!I call it censorship if a person is forced to comply with standards that no one needs nor wants. We get excuses, we get promises but we simply never get anything that actually helps the user to be more creative and have it easy to create posts and Ibles. How long was it until we at least got a half working sorting option in the community section? About a year or so?You want more and better Ibles, a functioning community section again, even more revenue?Well, then give the user what they want or at least what they need to be creative again.Talk to the boss and tell him or her that we need more coders or preferably a new platform for all that actually works and is not just patchwork.Take a look at forums, blogs or other community websites that offer postings and content.See what is possible and what users create, how they create it.Search through the endless numbers of complaints here to find what you missed again, again and again.Instructables won't lose the ongoing supply of new Ibles thanks to contests but as said, volume and quantity is not quality of content ;)A user who is left struggling year after year will give up one day.Users who realise that it is not worth it won't come back after their first and only posting in the community section. And well, someone who created a really outstanding Ible for a contest and does not even make it to the final rounds might never bother again. Why is there no "open system" for contests?Anyone deciding what Ibles make it through should be open about it, post it and allow users to suggest entries he or she might have missed.Even more so for the winner selections. How many votes? What exactly made it a winner? Was it promoted by featuring it or listing it elsewhere?I don't know about you guys but even in a schools science contest the winners will be announced with some meaningful words why they actually won....Sadly, right now, I only see taking, restrictions and ignorance for the user here. The few posts from the support are highly appreciated but only a drop of water onto a red hotplate.Just for imagination:I took tons of pictures detailing my project right from the start.I took a lot of notes while creating it.I am ready to create a great Ible with it all so everyone can build or create it, I want to world to know about it.Then I click on the button to make my Ible and am greeted right away with an image uploader....Dumb enough I upload all my pics in one go.I start writing, I want to include a picture with the text so the user knows exactly why for example that screw needs to be done exactly like the picture shows. But wait...I can't drag the image down from that studip bar.Instead I am forced to create a new step for each picture that has a pecial meaning or purpose.Making a list of parts?Well, lets do it manually and by wasting precious time because there is not usable listing option anywhere to allow the creation with bullets or similar.Oh well, several hours later than expected it is time to take a preview of my creation. The images are clustered up and in no way usable to floow the text, so I start again, add more steps, drag it out even more.In the end I have about 50 steps for something that was fine in MS Word on a few pages.....To finnish I just need to somehow figure out how to get my cover images to fit into this tiny box.Cropping, resizing, again and again only to realise I might have as well used the thumb image IrfanView created in my folder...Then I do the final check.I try to make sense of the unplanned order of things and that no images makes enough sense because I need to click back and forth between steps all the time to undestand it.Then I take another look at my MS Word printout and the Ibles lands in my draft folder. When a suitable contest comes along I might try to check if the editing options have improved enough to post it.Well, I now have more drafts than published Ibles...Now imagine I would not be the only one....

Creating copper nano particles

Be it conductive ink, decorations or just a special pigment for your paint project, Copper is nice.Only problem is grinding this soft metal fine enough to be of any good use.A not so well documented feature of food additives is that they often have "unwanted" side effects. In our case E300, Ascorbic Acid or just Vitamin C.So how to make copper nano particles with it you might wonder?Prepare a well saturated solution of Copper Sulphate, you find the blue crystals in the gardening section together with fertilisers. It is best to use destilled water and not plain tap water, if in doubt go at least with the demineralised stuff for batteries.Adding E300 either dissolved in water or directly as crystals will start a nice reaction. The copper solphate is reduced back to metallic copper. There are a few problems though...For best results you need a saturation copper sulphate solution, low temperatures and a magnetic stirrer. This produced the finest particles for me at around 5°C.But even warm or at room temp the constant sirring is beneficial for even particle sizes. The ascorbic acid is used up in the process as well. You can start with a little and see how much you end up with in terms of a layer of copper particles at the bottom.Adding more E300 will cause a "rain" of fine copper particles - once this no longer happens you know the copper sulphate is used up as well.A dark greenish color of the solution will indicate this as well.Getting the copper out of the glass...Keep in mind the copper is extreme fine!As long as it stays in the solution it won't oxidize or otherwise react.Once out and in contact with just water and air oxidation happens quickly, after all it is pure copper...I found removing the watery solution and then adding destilled water to repeat the process is a good start. The waste from the first round can still be usefull though...In the final round I try to remove as much water as I can and then add methyled spirit to prevent the reactions. You can use oil as well or do a quick vacuum drying and store it in a sealed and oxygen free container. What to do with it?As a condictive paint with the right binder it only needs some rubbing with a smooth tool to create a conductive cover with a low resistance. In a clear paint or resin it provides some stunning color effects. You can even dust the dry powder onto a freshly painted surface to get a copper look.Leave without a top coat and you quickly get an old copper or even green look.If you ever wanted extreme fine metal particles you will come up with more ideas...Like shielding or sintering....

Not Able to Get to Drafts - Help!

I can see all of the ones I have published, but as soon as I try to flip to drafts it redirects me away.I was able to finish up and publish my last project by finding the Editor page in my browser history, but I can't do that for other ones that I haven't opened since I got a new computer. Is this a bug that's been going around or is there a different way I should be accessing the drafts?I appreciate the help!

Challenge: A key defroster for opening bike locks in winter.

Hello all.So I live in Montreal, winter is long here. Every morning opening our bike locks is problematic. We fixed it partially with lube, but this post is not about these solutions.I have been looking for a device that could heat the frozen core of the lock. You can see an image attached of a product not available anymore to get the idea. I guess it was not working very well...I have zero knowledge in electronics/electricity. I thought this question could be interesting/challenging for some of you. So ideally the gadget would be:Small enough to be carried on the key chain or in a commute bag.Able to be inserted in any type of locksBuilt with a safe way to prevent unwanted switch on (to avoid burning bags/pockets/houses...Lol)Able to produce enough heat to defrost the lock Rechargeable would be best (USB best best), capacity of 5mn maybe to operate twice a day...Reasonably quick to unfreeze the lock, so you don t freeze yourself (That s why I abandon using hot pouches around the lock, pouring hot water will fix it quickly but then it will freeze again)As I said, I don t have the skills to even begin to find a solution, but I saw a lot of smart stuff here and I am curious to see what you guys would answer to that. My guess is that it must be very difficult, if not I can t see why a similar product is not widely commercialized. I think a lot of people would buy it.Thanks for the reading, I hope I picked your interest. Have a good day.

chainmaile aspect ratio

First of all , I welcome all . I fell in love with chainmail . I love its simple complexity , its beauty . I respect the time it takes to create a piece of jewelry . I made a couple of bracelets and necklaces for my kids and for my wife. I had no idea about the aspect ratio , or how a pattern should be loose or tight. Once the AR is firmly determined and once in range . I'm having fun , but I would like to know what your AR experience with certain patterns. Anybody willing to share some wisdom? DP ( Croatia )

Rebuilding NordicTrack ski machine drive rollers

Many people still buy and use a NordicTrack Ski Machine, although these machines are not as popular as they once were. I have talked to people who say they just plain wore out a ski machine. The part that wears is the one-way clutch inside the drive rollers. NordicTrack makes the one-way clutch sound very mysterious. In reality it is a one-way needle bearing and is available from Amazon or locally from a good bearing shop. The internal diameter of the one-way needle bearing used in my machine (Challenger, similar to a 303) is 5/8 inch. The outer diameter is 7/8 inch. The width of the one-way needle bearing from end to end is 5/8 inch. I originally had hopes of being able to install new one-way needle bearings, myself; but, they together with the bronze sleeve bearings on either side of the one-way needle bearing inside each drive roller are pressed into place. Pressing bearings is not a job for the average home tinkerer but requires a bearing press capable of exerting tons of pressure in a very precise manner. You can often have a local machine shop press the bearings in your machine's drive rollers. Or, you can send them away to Nordic Track Guy and have them rebuilt for about $33 with a one week turnaround. The core of the rollers really does not wear out, but new rollers are available on the Internet from $65 to $95, depending on the vendor. From what I can find, some models used an alternate size. Check to be certain you order the correct rollers, if you choose to replace. One of my drive rollers suddenly began to hiccup. It seemed that the clutch did not always release immediately when I pulled my foot forward. Then I noticed a little mush in the response when I began to bring my foot back on the push stroke. Before you rebuild or replace your rollers, try this: Remove one side of your Ski Machine. See the second photo and check the exploded diagram in your manual. Four nuts and two screws, all plainly visible, need to be removed. Slide the washers and the roller off of the top side. The shaft and flywheel can be wiggled out of the other side without removing anything from that side. Remove the washers and the roller from that side, too. Flush the one-way needle bearing by squirting some penetrating oil, like Liquid Wrench, into the bearing. Work it both ways with your smallest finger. Push a facial tissue into the shaft hole in the roller and sop away the penetrating oil and any metallic dust it lifts. Do this several times. Let the rollers air dry. A little lubrication is good. People who comment on lubrication for one-way needle bearings use Tri-Flo (I am not familiar with it.) or they use a little ATF transmission fluid. You want enough to lubricate, but not so much that the bearings slip. (But, see the comments below where the oil impregnated bronze sleeve bearings are supposed to supply enough lubrication for the needle bearings.) Put the rollers back in place on the shaft. Check to be certain they grab on the rearward stroke and release on the forward stroke. Reassemble the machine. Do not forget the washers between the roller and the side board. My machine works again as it should. The day will likely come when this simple fix does not help, and I will need to rebuild or replace the rollers then. But, for now, my rollers have a new lease on life. What follows is for your information. The first photo is of a portion of the back cover of the manual that came with my machine. It shows a cutaway image of the drive roller. The black printing is mine. Notice the three cylinders inside the drive roller. The outer two are bronze sleeve bearings. The center one looks like a roller bearing, but is a one-way needle bearing. A one-way needle bearing is essentially a roller bearing, but the rollers are able to move forward and backward a little in their cage. There is a wedge shape for the axle of each roller that causes the rollers to bind between the bearing cage and the shaft when the rotation is in one direction, but they are free in the other direction. Here is a description of how they work with graphics. This link is for an Instructable about a number of modifications I made to our NordicTrack ski machine, including how it can be stored vertically in a closet. If you do not have a digital monitor for your skier, or need to replace one, here is an Instructable on how to make your own from a digital bicycle speedometer.  Check NordicParts for any parts you need, also Nordic Fitness Ski Machines. Danny at Nordic Fitness Ski Machines has some very nice new rollers for sale.

Preventing Lockpicking?

(Please forgive me if I'm in the wrong category.. Fairly new on the forums) Hi, I'm quite a lockpicker in my life time but word spreads through out my "Friend Network" And most of them attempted on my door. I never do it to anyone without a damn good reason, but they do it for fun and pleasure.. So i always wondered cause i have a Keypad lock with a key hole. How do prevent them from picking my door to my valuable stuff while I can still use my key? Please help me out! (And i know ill get some replies saying to jam the key hole and use the number pad to open the door, what happens when the batteries dye out? I'll be stuck outside my room!)

Front door unlock with face recognition

I have a "Danalock" attached to my front door ( works with Bluetooth ) and compatible with Apples Home kit. As all standard front doors there is a small "spyhole". All works perfectly I use Home kit to lock and unlock the front door. This idea just poped in my mind that, what if i use one of the "raspberry pi " cam or any other small cams put it in the spy hole, then some how program it to connect to Pi so it can use face recognition.lets say I avoid using any app at all as soon lets say I or any user arrives at front door the face recognition allows the user and just for the fun of it plays a greeting "hello & welcome user1". So there is Pi cam + pi and Danalock. I would appriciate if there are any ideas or sloutions or comments etc.

Feeding baby praying mantis (newly hatched)

FYI to anyone who has or wants to know what you can feed praying mantis babies right after they hatch. The egg sack i have been "protecting" (i thought) til spring has just hatched a day ago and its only december, my plan was to let them go after they hatched in the spring, but since i didnt keep the sack cold, it hatched now. After i freaked out for abit seeing i have about 50 or more TINY mantis all over the container i put the sack in, i called and called ALL over but no one would take them, and i cant let them just die. Everything i read about them says they only eat LIVE bugs..and they have to be small...really really small..like pinhead crickets or fruit flies...well...YUCK..i dont want that in the house...but if thats what they need then so be it..UNTIL...i called a bait store and the guy (i wanted to KISS him for this info) told me to put RAW MEAT on a string so it sticks in small peices and hang it in the container..IT WORKS!! they went right for it!! SOOOO.........if you dont want or cant get tiny live food for them...FEED THEM RAW HAMBURER MEAT on a string!! this picture is the mom, isnt she beautiful! haha..i mean it!

Straight line art - what is the technical name?

I remember back in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and I believe even 5th grade, when I was in a gifted program, we had to draw. We drew only straight lines, and when we did it right, it made a curve. We would get a paper with 2 lines, connected at a vertex, at a 90 degree angle. We would draw points every centimeter or so, and connect the points, far to close, far to close. (It's hard to explain.) I'm searching for it on the Internet, but I can't seem to find the right word. Does anyone know it? Thanks, and if it turns out all good, expect an Instructable on it mid- to late October.

Can't delete collections / Can't change order of collections

As the title reads, I am not able to delete my (even empty) collections.I would also like to see an option to change the order they are shown in the dropdownlist while browsing i'bles. I think there MUST be a way to delete unused/empty Collections or even move their order. And as a programmer, I don't think it is that complicated to create a "delete" button (or a "change order" button maybe).Would love to read that this will be made soon..Cheers!

Motor Help for Horse Walker

Hi ppl,Somewhat just agreed to help a friend and his family build a 'horse walker'!I know sounds weird but they want to have a go at building one rather than buying one. Basically as none of them know about electronics they asked for my help.....And now i ask for yours......Now i assume that the motor will run from mains, will have to be pretty beefy, if anyone has ideas on this please link me!Next, speed control, i can probably acquire a relay module from my dad (electronic engineer) and program a micro processor to turn the motor on and off for set periods of time to exercise the horses. Whats the best way of getting speed control?Thanksdrummerianhttp://www.show-jumps.co.uk/horse-walker.jpg

Re-using Smart TV board from dead TV to make another TV smarter...

Hi, I have just bought LG 47GA6400 TV but I damaged LCD screen (CRD31092201) when I was assembling it.  I couldn't find low cost LCD to replace and I started wondering how I can reuse any remaining parts of this TV. Actually there are many people like me wondering what to do with dead Smart TV. Few years ago you would receive a standard advice – throw it away. But today Smart TV parts are powerful and with your help might be re-used again... Here is an example: My LG TV has mainboard with dual core CPU,  Google TV inside and cool remote controller with QWERTY keyboard and tons of applications.... I wish I could reuse it with other, not so smart LCD TV I have.  The only problem, how to connect Smart TV mainboard to a HDMI.  It doesn't have HDMI out, it has only input ports and one LCD interface cable.... Is it a crazy idea to convert LCD interface back to HDMI or VGA ? Can you create an instructables to show how to do that ?

Dremel Micro Repair/Reuse

Recently at the end of 2016, I acquired a Dremel Micro cordless rotary tool from a garage sale/yard sale for about $20. I used it maybe 3 - 4 times until it didn't want to hold a charge for long. Basically when I put it on the charger, the LEDs scroll top/down indicating it is charging but after a minute or two they stop their normal scrolling sequence and they all stay lit up, which isn't even mentioned of in the manual. The fuel gauge battery indicator shows up red meaning it's near its battery life. At this point, I'm considering either to salvage the motor or buy a new battery for the dremel (which are 2 Sanyo 14650 batteries that are soldered onto a circuit board inside). I'm just wondering is there something that I have failed to do that would make the dremel not hold a charge? Thanks in advance!

DVI to VGA Conversion on a Budget

I didn't make this into an Instructable because my wife is visiting Minnesota and took the digital camera with her. If anyone wants to build this and photograph their process, just include me as a collaborator and I'll be happy... :) I just acquired a new (used) video card for my Mac. Unfortunately, it has a ADC (Apple Display Connector) and a DVI (Digital Video Interface). While the card is capable of driving two displays, I only had a DVI-VGA adapter and ADC-VGA adapters run $50-100US! I decided that I'd just have to figure out how to wire my own adapter and run it to an unused PCI plate. The following schematic is a DVI-VGA adapter. I've included the pins that would be used for the equivalent points on an ADC connector. I just finished wiring an ADC connector to a VGA connector on another plate. It works perfectly! I hope this saves someone else a few bucks... Vegas

How To Unscrew Three-Pronged Screws Without a Three-Pronged Screwdriver?

I have a Gamecube controller I want to take apart, but it has triangle screws. They're like Phillips (four-pronged) but only have 3 prongs instead. I don't have a screwdriver for this, so I need a way to unscrew them.EXAMPLEUPDATE: Not trying to be impolite, but I am NOT looking for a place to buy this kind of screwdriver. I am looking for a way to unscrew them WITHOUT the specific screw driver.

Make use of iCamera 1000 units?

I have 3 "iCamera 1000" camera units laying around. I do not have the rest of the security system they are designed to function with, but there has to be some way to make use of them and have some fun. I have lots of cat 6 cable and RJ45 connectors to custom make a cable if anyone has the expertise to figure out how to make use of these. Before posting here, I searched and searched here and on Google but only found information regarding the "normal" application of these cameras..... I was hoping for something more outside the box which is why I am here. I included a front/back picture. Thanks for any ideas!!

Very old shielding materials and techniques for permanent magnets and resulting possibilities

Forromagnetic meterials are not just called that for no reason. It comes from ferrous - iron.Iron has the highest permeability at normal temperatures. That means a magnet is attracted to it very strongly. We utilise this for transformer cores, the stuff inside a relay and the moving latch of the relay itself.Like current from an electrical system magnetic fields like to take the easiest route possible.Air is a very bad medium, so any iron close by will be prefered even if it is at a slight distance. You can check with a magnet, a steel bar and some iron shavings - please cover the are with plate first ;)Slightly less known is the option to also guide and extend the magnetic field this way.If you check how far the magnetic field of a magnet reaches and note that distance, then you can add some steel bars or rods at the poles - the field will extend through the metal. The most powerful example of this are the shielded magnets used for hooks or speakers.Except for a tiny area the entire magnetic flux goes through the metal. So in this lefover area the magnetic flux density will my many times greater than what the magnet alone would be able to.What most people don't know is that magnets also interact with other magnets in terms of their fields changing and distorting. The Halbach Array is a good example of this.Seen as a single magnet the array would have one weak and one strong side instead of even strenght for both.Wherever magnetic fields change a conductor can produce electricity or current. This in return causes an electromagnetic field that opposes the one from the magnets.Just drop a magnet through a copper or aluminium pipe ;)Since these distortions are widely unknow to the hobby tinkerer mistakes can happen ;)In the early days of exploring science some people already knew about shielding. And they also knew that certain metals have certain properties.Where it is quite hard to create a good coil from steel wire, copper works fine as it is not magnetic. What would then a copper shielding do?If you have two moving magnets with only a tiny gap then the resulting field distortions are quite huge.A copper shield around the magnet like a pipe would then react to these changes and also create a megnetic field that works in relation to the enclosed magnet. In simple terms it means the shield would let the magnet appear weaker or stronger depending on the field change.A quite old document I found gave some hints on how people thought in different directions back then.It was in regards to the design of a magnet motor by the way. Here various magnets were shielded in tube made of a copper-bismuth-alumium alloy. These tubes were then electrically connected so it created a single loop conductor. The claim was that the resulting electromagnetic field of this ring would drive the fields of the enclosed magnets sideways out of alignment.Like bending straight pastic tubes sideways. This "pulsating" would always happen when the magnetic binding forces reach max and so basically drastically weaken this binding effect.Another document talks about a "magnetised brass rod".A holes of the rod diameter is drilled through a block magnet. Not from north to south but through the middle where the flux is greatest. The claim here was that if that rod rotates fast enough a very low voltage with a very high current will be generated.Sounds easy and interesting enough that I might have to test one myself one day.The best one however is what I consider a hoax or being as good as Starlite.Someone back in 1908 claimed to have created a material the reflects magnetic fields. In lame man's terms it would be like an insulator around some electrical wire. The claim and some pics showed it, was that no magnetic field can pass the material.Or to be correct only a tiny fraction of what would be possible through air.A small magnet inside a longer tube of this material would create almost the same attraction to steel at the tubes ends as on the magnet itself.Measurements showed the field strength would be almost equal to a long mangnet of the same field strength.Imagine guiding the field of a big and powerful magnet through a tube around some corners or other magnets and then end in just a tiny hole for the entire flux...Too bad he never shared his secret formula to anyone knows to mankind.Isolation...Imagine you have an array of changing magnetic fields and quite strong magnets. Then you might face the problem that your focus on the "working" end neglected the other end of the magnet (stack).Providing some iron core material will keep thes field lines contained and away from interfering with your setup ;)But it also allows to use te otherwise unused end of your magnets more directly. For example by guiding to another magnet to affect its field strenght ;)Placing a sheet or steel between two magnets in a setup provides a "shared pole" so to say.If you have a north and south pole on a rotor at a distance of 5mm then a sheet of steel between will drastically weaken the strenght and reach of this combined field. It is like pulling the arch between the magnets down to make it more flat. And at and an angle the resulting field will also be slightly angled ;)Capping...When I first encounter this many years ago I couldn't really make sense of it.Quite complex..If you check the magnetic field lines with iron filings or similar then you notice how they go in a rounded manner from pole to pole. This is because the single field lines are of equal polarity and will dirve apart like opposing magnets.By capping the ends of a magnet you provide a short.Instead of diverting out like mad they will follow the cap and create very intersting magnetic field in return. If both poles are capped it is like pressing the magnet flat but without having a field on top of the oles - only aorund the center part. For this the thickness much must match what is required for the flux density. As a rule of thumb: if the end is still very magnetic then it is not enough material tickness ;)Interacting fields in a tube...This one is quite old too and seemed to have found no usable inventions apart from simple magnetic spring replacement systems. But it gave me some clues about Tesla "earthquake machine" ;)If you place a magnet in a tube and at it's ends magnets with opposing fields to the one inside then you can fix this magnet in place.Push one magnet deeper and the distance from the inner magnet to the other end will shrink the same amount. In this old paper two coils were around the pipe with the inner magnet between them.In this gap and at about the same width as the magnets length another coil was placed.Violent shaking would then create electrical energy at much higher level then modern shaker torches. In return an AC current on the outer coils would cause the inner magnet to move back and forth to create electricity in the center coil.According to the paper possible uses include: core less transformer, measuring minute changes in AC voltages, providing free power from a running motor...The last one had me stumbled for a very long time.Until I considered a different configuration. The whole thing is basically a linear DC motor - with correct timing of course. And in some motors we use permanent magnets.I am starting to wonder what would happen if we would design a rotor magnet like this? The running motor would be subject to constant field changes that affect the rotor. And a normal motor is always "even".By using four magnets instead of one we can push the field really flat. This means the area where the coil would operate (about 1/5 of the magnets area) will have a much stronger field. The resulting torque should be higher by about 25% !!Even a simple two coil model setup should show a significant increase in performance here.Timing is critical here but I tried some calculations based on 8 poles and the required "on times" for the coils. In a standard motor configuration with a single rotor magnet the coil is active for about 12° of the rotation. With a 4 magnet configuration this "on time" can be reduced to under 8° of the rotation to get the same amount of torque. An energy reduction of about 4% if you neglect losses and only think in time.If you think in terms like impulse energy then we are talking of about 15% !Shorter on time but still much higher flux density overall than for the long standard timings.Going the long run now:If you check how most DC motors work then you realise soon that for most one rule seems to followed.Only use one coild pair at a time. This is quite contradictive if you consider the geometry and options.A dual commutator would allow to use a second coil pair with a field OPPOSING the magnets instead of being attracted to it.After all: on you bike you pedal with both legs and not just one...And if you do it professionally then yu do the same as I suggested for the motor - you use the up pull of your legs as well.Doing it brushless only requires amodified h-bridge desing to drive the second coil pair at the right timing. Some will now say that it requires twice the energy, I say that for the same motor size your get twice the torque!Just imagine what that means in possible weight reduction for a motor - or its size to deliver the same torque at the same power levels when a normal motor is used ;)The more poles the more complicate the precise timing but no big deal really with modern electronics. Can it be improved even further?I though long and hard about that one until I considered EMF.A DC motor produces a lot of it when the elecromagnetic field collapses in the the coils. We do not utilise this energy...There is a tiny delay until the released energy levels are at max.My theory is that it should be possible to divert this energy into another coil set.If that coil is not the next active but still within a strong enough field area then the EMF would actually add to the drive of the motor.Only downside is that according to my calculations at least 16 poles would be required to get an optimum result.Way above of what I can create in my little garage :(In theory it should then be possible to reach about 98% efficiency for the motor....

People powered woody garden waste shredder

Would someone please make an instructable for a hand or bike powered 'shredder' or 'chipper'  that doesn't involve welding.  Bahi did a great one, but it requires welding, and we don't have that available. The woody stuff that needs making into much smaller pieces are: orach stems, collard and kale stems, summer squash vines, perpetual spinach roots, tomato stems and Florence fennel stalks (they get to be about eight feet tall each year).

Active Noise Cancellation for cars not equipped

I am playing with an idea. Higher end cars come with active noise cancellation systems to make the drive quieter and more enjoyable. However compact and subcompact class cars do not. With the noise canceling technology is available on every shelf for headphones, I am wondering if this could be hacked and repurposed to reduce road noise in a car. The system (Im presuming) would require one microphone, one noise canceling circuit board, and one speaker per wheel well. So it would require two pair of noise canceling headphones to accomplish. The idea is to improve the cabin noise quality in an off the shelf kind of way. Currently there are no aftermarket systems within the normal financial reach of most people. Only a hand full of aftermarket systems out there are available and priced @ 4K USD or more. If this works, it could be marketed at around 100 USD per unit. And provide a much nicer driving experience to the compact and subcompact cars.  By placing the microphones under the carpet and on the wheel wells metal surface the system should ignore the stereo, and correct road noise transmitted from the wheels to reduce cabin noise. Stereo interference is a common problem with cabin mounted microphones on OEM systems. So, your mission if you choose to accept it, is to devise a way to reduce road noise in a compact or subcompact car using off the shelf noise cancellation circuitry available to the average person. If your successful this should be a very easy way to upgrade most cars not equipped with such a system. Having a noise canceling system in a car reduces noise fatigue, and improves the driving experience for all of us.
