What's a good circuit for a Schmitt trigger flasher?

I have been told that a Schmitt trigger can flash an LED, just like a 555 timer can, only the circuit is simpler. I haven't been able to find an example of this online, however.

More things to do with old keyboards

I saw these things in the window of a store in San Francisco today, but the picture I took of the store's name didn't come out. I may have to do something like this next time I find a dead keyboard on the street (or, you know, lying around the office).

How can I fix my Xbox 360?

Hey,I bought my first 360 on the same day they launched but about 2 years ago it stop reading disks it just says "unreadable disk" or something similar no matter what disk I put in it. About 6 months after that I retried it on a whim and it worked and I happily played Crackdown, unfortunately after another 6 months it stopped reading again. So far I haven't gotten the red-rings of death but I'm wondering what the problem might be. As near as I can figure it must be the laser, that it's got loose and shifted so it doesn't read, then shifted back true then off again, right?

Brain Storming: What can I do with this tract ?

I have, available to me, tracts of plastic that resemble lighting tracks that hold those lights you can move from area to area, hung from the ceiling. Their are, however; made of a fairly thin plastic, with a recycle 6 on them (our locals do not take #6's). They are a little flexible, but not overly so. They have a notch/tab at each end, faced in the same direction (allowing what is on the tract, to come off one end but not the other). Another description of them might be that they look similar to those metal tracks used to hold sockets in a row (for those that have seen them), only made from translucent plastic. I now have Pictures posted below,. What can these be used for? They throw away about 6-20 of them A DAY. The tracts once held little packets of tea or coffee pouches that have a plastic T top in them (like the packets pictured)

need help with HDDJ Turning an old hard disk drive into a rotary

I'm new to instructables.com and found a very interesting guide.https://www.instructables.com/id/HDDJ_Turning_an_old_hard_disk_drive_into_a_rotary/?ALLSTEPSbut I'm not a electric technican, and don't understand all steps.I understood how to open the HDDJ and i can sold the wires correctly. i know that the motor is used as a dynamo, so that I can measure the energie produced. My first question is why are there 4 soldingpoints? - Are there 4 magnets which produce the energie, and every magnet has a soldingpoint.I got a problem with "amplifying the output" "One of the lines from the HDD is used as a reference, and is connected to the (-) inputs of all the comparators. The other three lines are connected to each of comparators (+) inputs. Not shown in the schematic, but also important, are the power supply pins of the comparators. The negative supply is connected to ground, while the positive supply is connected to Vcc (in our case +5V)."Which wire I have to use as the reference? Maybe why? What is Vcc? an energie source, like a batterie? If I amplified the output which microcontroller I could use, can I use any mikrochip, or do I have to use a special?and how do I install the firmware?Maybe someone could help me with my questions. Maybe someone who is able to speak german so it would be a lot easier for me.regardsMurphys Law

giving a computer speaker a headphone jack

So I basically dissected an IMac G3 and took out the speakers. I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to wiring so i was hoping that someone could help me take the head phone jack from actual headphones and attach it to the computer speaker. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. (I attached a picture of the computer speaker and the headphones)

Very Strange Error??!!

Ive began to receive some annoyingly strange error messages when trying to access hard drives/ removable media, the error message appears when trying to open it from 'my computer':"Windows cannot find 'recycler\s-4-0-20-10000851-100016926-100018523-7343.com'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."Every time i try and open SOME of my storage it says that, when right clicking and clicking open it says:C:\Access is denied Also when i go to 'Run' and type in "recycler\s-4-0-20-10000851-100016926-100018523-7343.com"the very same message appears. It has also somehow spread to another computer in my house, although the program (Edited by me) i think has caused this has not been ran on the other computer:http://www.k-fix-it.synthasite.com/downloadClick on sixaxis.zip Could somebody check that out for me?? (ps3sixaxis_en.exe, other files *.vbs, ps3.exe are mine)"s-4-0-20-10000851-100016926-100018523-7343.com" was also at one time on the processes list in Task Manager....Also only some drives were coming up with this error but after a while they where too?? I have no idea on how to remove this and its beginning to get VERY annoying.. Thanks Kieran

Enforcing polarity with an AC adapter?

Several months ago, I posted an I'ble for adding an AC adapter to something. The adapter I chose, from Radio Shack, is actually a two-piece "kit" -- the wall wart cord ends in a generic two-pin female jack, and they sell a bunch of different end plugs. The jack is symmetric, so that the end plug can be put on with either ground or hot on the outside.I've just realized that this could be a problem. If the electronic device expects red to be positive and black negative, then putting the jack on backwards would be equivalent to installing all the batteries the wrong-way about. Not a great feature. To "protect" the device, I'm considering adding a diode bridge to ensure that the internal "red wire" always carries the positive, and the "black wire" is always ground. Do more experienced folks consider this a good idea? Is it necessary? Would it be better, perhaps, to just epoxy the end plug so it can't be reversed?

Freescale Programming?

Out of the many samples I recieved last week, the freescale MC908JL8MPE is one of the few that I like the look of. Its a beefy PDIP with 28 pins, unlike the many TQFNs I've recieved I could actually solder this (well no need as it fits in a breadboard). But my problem is, there doesn't seem to be many easy-to-follow tutorials for programming these microcontrollers. The only simple solution seems to be to buy £100 programmers.. which I'm not too keen on. Is there a simple way to program them via parallel/serial or maybe using my usbtiny to program an atmel chip to program the freescale chip? Thanks.

Goalie Designs New Pads to Block More Shots

Hockey goaltender Trevor Leahy was looking for an extra edge in his hockey games and decided to design some new goalie pads to help him out. Going with the idea of camouflaging them, the front of the pads are meant to mimic the look of the net itself. The idea is that in the split second before a shot, a player would shoot into the pad and not the real net. The results are inconclusive, but at least the whole process has helped Trevor get into college.Since the days when Boston Bruins' goaltender Gerry Cheevers started inking stitches onto his mask each time the equipment protected his face, many goalies have expressed their individuality with designs and paintings on their mask or other pieces of equipment. But Leahy's design - essentially a camouflage for a goal that is 4 feet high and 6 feet wide - has hockey players and coaches amazed and impressed. Link via Core77

RC vehicle function modification

I have here a cheap rc vehicle with foward//turn capability. Is there some way i can alter the controls to make it turn left and right? The front wheels arent restricted to left or right only, they turn freely in either direction but the remote only has a turn button. (Pics of front and back of remote just added. Some sort of switch activates each motor but the control is either on or off from what I can tell. Although from what I can see, simply adding a couple of switches with foward/reverse functions soldered directly to the board would do what I needed.)

Australian "Throw Out Week" FREE Electronics a plenty!! Some suggestions please.

Here in Sydney Australia we are having our 6 monthly "throw out week". This is a kerbside pickup of hard rubbish. They often include electronics and the like. Tonight I plan on going out to "collect" some useful items. Just picked this little item up on a walk home, in case with a new set of batteries inside. Last clean up I found a brand new digital camera working in box with all accessories... Can anyone think of something to make with it? I plan on posting more objects tonight.

Need help with power supplies

I've been reading about electronics for a while and watching the Make podcast and I've finally started making my own projects. Anyway I have some cordless tools with 3 extra batteries but only one of them still takes a charge. So I thought it would be cool if I could put a power supply in one of my dead batteries so that I could plug it into the wall. I've been looking around my garage and thrift stores for a wall wart that would get the job done (the batteries are 19.2V Craftsman batteries I think they pull about 2000ma) but the closest I've been able to find is an old laptop power cord has a DC output of 19v and 3.9amps. So I'm not sure if that will work or if the extra amps will burn out my tools or something. Does anyone know if it would work? If not how can I dial down the amps?

There is a Major Timeline Error in the Halo Wars Promo Poster

In the poster for the new game Halo Wars, try to find the mistake. I'll give you a hint: look at their guns. As many people know from reading the Halo series of books and the video games, that before the battle rifle is introduced, all but one Spartan are wiped out on Reach, or trapped inside of Onyx. You, as Master Chief, are introduced to the BR55HB SR Battle Rifle in Halo 2. The Spartans were all wiped out before Halo 1, well before the Battle Rifle is even conceived by its makers. What gives? Why would they make such a serious (to me) mistake on a widely distributed promotional product?

T.O. Chapter of Tetra needs machinist

Hi, the Toronto chapter of the Tetra Society is looking for a machinist within the city who can volunteer some time and a machine shop. Tetra is a volunteer organization dedicated to designing and building assistive devices and adaptations that improve the quality of life for people with disabilities. Tetra would pay for the materials used, and the volunteer machinist may receive a tax receipt for the hours the machine shop is used for Tetra projects. If you know of a machinist in Toronto who's willing to volunteer time and shop space please let us know. Thanks.

Hacked Road Signs

This may be one of the greatest pranks I've heard of in a while. We see them everywhere these days, digital signs by the side of the road telling us about road conditions or that we should prepare to stop or that our local bridge might be closed next Tuesday from noon to midnight. And if you're like me, you've always just assumed that the message on the signs is legitimate and properly authorized. But what if the sign, instead of reading something like "Ice Ahead" was flashing the message, "Zombies Ahead"?It's true that in San Francisco or a few other cities, such a sign could be put up by local transportation officials to warn people of an impending zombie march, but even in those places, the more likely explanation would be that the sign was hacked. And if you're in the Boston area and saw signs hacked in this way, there's always a decent chance it was done by students from MIT.According to the blog i-hacked.com, some programmable road signs are easily messed with, largely because they often have unlocked instrument panels, a text-entry system that is easily accessed, and are often protected with uncomplicated, or unchanged default passwords. That's some of the text from an article on cnet, here. I love what the hackers did with the text. :-)

What happened to "Groups?"

What happened to Groups? They still exist--you can still add your instructable to a group. The only way I could search or explore Groups was to click "Groups" on my personal page, then on the "Join other Groups" link at the bottom of the page. I couldn't find another way in (other than the advanced Search function.)There doesn't seem to be a simple or straight-forward way to access them otherwise... I sure don't see a way to create a new one (not that a little weeding-out of the existing groups isn't called for.)Edit: Oh, wait, I see it--you can Submit a new group. But a lot of casual users probably aren't even aware they exist...

Where do i solder to make a switch on this?

Im making a camera coil gun, and i have a kodak funsaver, but the charging switch is a button. its a piece of curved metal with three points that hit three pieces of metal on the PCB. and to turn the switch on you push it so a bump on the curved metal hits a center piece of metal on the PCB. i removed the button but i dont know where to solder the wires to. The button is held on with tape, so i just removed it, and im confused where to solder. if someone could copt the image and show me a highlighted area to solder to that would be great

A sight for international skywatchers - "Ring of Fire" Eclipse

From SpaceWeather.com:SOLAR ECLIPSE: On Monday, Jan. 26th, the Moon will pass in front of the sun producing an annular "ring of fire" eclipse. This is not a total eclipse; the Moon will cover only 93% of the sun's surface. Nevertheless, the Moon's dead-center transit across the solar disk will produce a sight of rare beauty for observers along the "path of annularity." Best views are to be had from islands in Indonesia where the ring of fire will appear to sink into the ocean at sunset. Meanwhile, in Australia, southeast Asia, southern parts of India and South Africa, observers will experience an off-center partial eclipse. Crescent-shaped sunbeams will dapple the ground while high overhead the Moon takes a curved bite out of the sun. Please visit http://spaceweather.com for eclipse maps, timetables and photos. If you're in the areas where the eclipse can be seen, how about taking and posting pictures?Animated map of eclipsePDF map of eclipse

Now things have taken a big turn for the something, maybe worse maybe better, anyway I got put out of my house, the fight has been resolved and I'll bore you with details some other time because I'm writing on an iPhone at the moment, my brothers or touch even... Where I'm living at the moment has no Internet and the Internet in my tech is also broken. I'm not sure when ill be back online for now the neighbours internet is my main hope but it's not a good one. The place I'm living is the house from my ible, how to deck a house out for nought. I'm still witting smoking and still working away at tech though. Stuffs a bit difficult at the moment but I will eventually have some good ibles from all the stuff I'm up to. I'll try to get on as much as i can when I can but I can still be contacted via bebo and email My emails killerjackalope at hotmail.co.uk and my bebos adamkelly401 I have those things on my mobile so it helps a bit. Yeah, oddly it's all hitthd fan right after my whole lives getting better topic... If you have different usernames for email or bebo then do tell me your ibles name so I know.

I was bored so I made a few small crossbows, the ones with rails are more like indoor toys...they shoot everything and tend to keep it in one piece (most of the time) xD That little crossbow without rails still packs a punch, so don't try and shoot it at someone o.o' And uh that also counts for the other 'little' crossbow.
