Halo weapons

This forum is solely meant for Halo weapons. This means that if anyone has any pics of Halo weapons made from Knex, talk about Halo weapons made from Knex, and especially instructables of Halo Weapons made from Knex are only allowed on this forum. I can't stop ppl from posting anything other than what was mentioned, but I do ask that you keep it to a minimum. To start things off, this is a Needler that I made just for looks. Swap Meat

I just ran across this thing:http://www.coudal.com/swapmeat/You send them something you made, and they send you something they made. I always have stuff I made that for various reasons I don't want to keep - it's not quite up to my tweaky-high quality standards, or I changed my mind about the color, or it doesn't fit and I don't feel like working on it any more.Normally I would try this first and report my experiences, but since the deadline is Aug 31, I might not have time to ship and receive AND write up! So there it is, not a recommendation but a Mere link. I'll comment here once I've sent them something and again if I get anything back. I plan to send them a Tribble.Has anyone heard of this? Did you send anything? Did you get anything back?

Post your Firefox

I've gotten so used to having my links, toolbars etc where they are, that i though "What would it be like to use someone else's customised Firefox?" Hence the topic. So go ahead and post a screenshot of your customised Firefox, call it a social experiment. It doesn't matter how over or under the top it is, I'm just curious to see. I'll get the ball rolling on this one...

DIY Car Speaker Phone with CB Mic

A project I've been trying to do for the longest time is to build a home made speaker phone for my car. There used to be a car phone in it from the pre-cell phone ages and its always sparked my imagination. Basically, from my cell phone's 2.5mm jack to a speaker and to a mic. Now, I have a CB Radio in my Cruiser and it has a built in PA. So what ever I say will come out a 3.5mm jack, very convient for the input for this project. However, I'm a dummy when it comes to speakers. I would have to build a small little loud speaker that would project the sound from my phone. I took apart a headset, so I have the plug for the headset. Now what I don't know is how the wires are arranged in the headset wire and what's the best way to built that speaker from a 2.5mm jack output. The input isn't much of a problem, just gotta figure out which wire in the headset wire is the input... probably red. I'm not much of a electrical guy and I don't currently own a soldering iron. I just have 180w welder.

Electromagnet Trouble

I'm in the development stages for my entry into the Launch It contest. Right now I'm just experimenting (or trying to) with scale electromagnets. I'm using solid core insulated copper wire from RadioShack, and a nearly fresh 9v battery. I tightly wound the wire around a finishing nail, which happened to already be magnetic, but am not getting any improvement in the magnetic field. It seems to be the same, weak size. Am I doing something wrong, or do I just need to step the size up? Thanks!

Coin Collectors

Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone here collected coins. My brother, and my dad, and I all collect coins as a side hobby. What coins do you collect? What types do you have, and the oldest ones? I have many books for nickels, dimes, and pennies. I just love the feeling when I can open up the book and find it full! My brother and I just bought some old Indian Head pennies, as well as some Steel Pennies from 1943. (During WWII) I have many foregin coins, as well as about 20 Susan B. Anthony's. I have about 10 Sacajawea coins, and a few Kennedy Half-Dollars. I just love the feeling of the profit that will be made in the future. Today I collected about 6 brand new 2007 Pennies, and took them out of circulation. Share your tips, tricks, and cool places to find your coins! As well as your coin collections!

Launch it and stats

As you may have noticed, the stats are not working right now. This part of our system has been a near constant thorn in our side, and has led to a variety of problems and time-sinks for us. Since the current Launch It contest will rely on a pageviews measurement to award prizes, I wanted to let you know that we have a backup, external system (Google Analytics). So, the stats will not be correct for a day or two while we work double-time to fix them, but we've got an impartial third party to help us determine the results. Sorry for any frustration.

LEDs as a replacement?

I've been thinking, which, for me is strange. What's stranger, i've been thinking about saving the planet. I don't believe that global warming is solely the fault of man and his machines, nor do i believe that we're all going to fry in a ten-thousand year summer, but that's not the point of this forum, and i'd appreciate no comments labelling me as a communist, or a planet-hater. What i had in mind is a new system of lighting. Say i took some LEDs (lets say 16) and connected them in paralell, and attatched them to the appropriate power source, would they be more or less efficient than a tungsten filament lamp? As for aesthetic considerations, to simulate natural sunlight during winter months, one could add blue or yellow LEDs to tune the shade of the light. Would this idea be more efficient than the lights we have? (i avoided mentioning those energy-efficient lights because they're not really that efficient, and give crap light.)

Joining Aluminum Sheets in Layers?

I need to join aluminum sheets together. When I say sheet, all I mean is the body of a coke can. So, I would cut the top and bottom of the can off, then make a vertical cut to make the body into one long strip. I would do this again, and then I want to join these two strips together, end to end. Would 1/8" rivets work? I thought of solder, but I heard solder doesn't stick well to aluminum. I would prefer the aluminum to stay down. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Ultrasound Cleaning

For maintenance purposes, I would like to construct an ultrasound cleaning tank. Preferably an encapsulated ultrasound transducer and generator that could be used in an old solvent cleaning tank which now should not be used. From reading a little about the subject, its application would find a wide use as a clean and environmentally friendly solution in many industrial and domestic applications. Is it feasable and cost effective to build a generator and an encapsulated transducer, and are there any websites to go to to find out more?

"Not liable" - Arrghh!

Is it only I that think that the Not Liable" category is somewhat overused? It seems like 30% of all instructables are tagged whith Not Liable...Ok, Instructables is a US site run by US citizens, and USA has enough slightly retarded individuals out of their 302 million citizens combined with a litigation-friendly juridical system to warrant labels on all goods to tell them that hot coffee can be hot, that you should not dry a cat in the microwave and that you should not iron your clothes whilst wearing them so maybe it's necessary to provide a Not Liable-category to keep our most excellent admins out of legal trouble. But can't that be printed in the footer of each page and in the TOS instead? For instance the instructable "make your own super pointer... for handhelds and tablet pc's" is classified as both "tech" and "not liable". Why o why? Is it because perhaps the spring in the pen might end up in someones eye while he's dismantling the pen and then the author and the entire instructables team together with the ISP's ( both the instructables ISP and the guy that got the spring in his eyes ISPfor not protecting and warning him for possibly bodily harm) will get sued for 47.11 millions of dollars in physical damages and mental anguish?Ay caramba! It seems that I've woken up in the wrong side of the bed today..... Disclaimer: I didn't mean you, you, you and you when I said slightly retarded, you know that, don't you? It's those other guys that I'm referring to... :-)And of course I deny any liability for the writing above. It is not the views of me nor my employer ;-)

Any Sydney-ers here want to share art/craft/tinkering shopping spots?

I'm trying to compile a list of rather disparate resources that can be found in Sydney: hobby shops, art stores, gadget-component stores, etc. I'm looking for places that carry specialized or uncommon items like: Electronics parts (switches, capacitors, etc) Jeweler's size tri-wing screwdriver Loupe Small calipers Glass etching paste Soapstone Pencil torch Low-cost soldering iron (i.e. one that's not meant to be used often) Half-hard sterling wire Carbon fiber rods & others (I'm sure people who are more familiar with different crafts will be able to list tools/materials unique to their area, and I might as well try and collect a broad range of sources.) & Yes, I have looked online.

Maker Faire -- I gotta write this down before I forget

Okay, I realized this awhile ago, and its soooo cool, and I keep forgetting to tell people.I don't know if this was intentional, or not, but anyway. If you know French, you'll appreciate "Maker Faire", because faire can* mean "to make".Maker to make! I like the ring ;-)*Normally, its translated "to do", but it can also be translated this way... even though its barely used like this...

Heckler&Colt "G16"

This is a cross between a HK G3 and a Colt M16. It doesn't have a magazine right now because I am too lazy. It is ,however, a sear system gun, so it has a "true" trigger. I haven't tested ranges yet, though it seems pretty powerful with blue rods. Hope you enjoy! ==UPDATE== 8/18/07 Sorry for those who liked the foregrip, it is gone...... REPLACED BY A GRENADE LAUNCHER!!!!!!!! Inspired by Loosewire's disc magazine, it can fire a shotgun round of about 10 blue spacers, or a slug round of a disc. The GL has a vertical grip, gut the gun will also have a horizontal foregrip as well. The GL works like a catapult, where the ram is pulled back and cocked, and instead of hitting or pushing the round out, the round is launched from the shear force of the ram suddenly launched, like when the light suddenly turns red and you slam the breaks on your car. ==UPDATE== 8/19/07 The GL is out of the prototyping stage. Now it has a trigger, located under the normal trigger.Danke,You

My cell is dead??

Well apparently my mother dropped my cellphone, now when you turn it on, the screen lights up, but it's blank, it vibrates when I turn it on because it was on vibrate before (startup sound). But it won't do anything else, I tried changing the ringer, hitting buttons, and it didn't make any sounds. Display cable popped out? Any ideas? -Punk

So I'm Totally Official Now

This is a bit belated, but a few weeks ago I became an official employee here at Instructables. Today is the end of my third week here. I've been busy digging in to all of the duties and learning all of the behind-the-scenes stuff, but it's better late than never to make some kind of announcement, right? I think that Instructables is an awesome place and I'm totally grateful that Eric hired me on. To be able to use your skills in an area where you want to use them is a rare thing. That is why I've been able to spend a lot more time on the site and the forums. So feel free to ask me any questions about what's going on. I also promise to get back on doing some Instructables really soon. This summer has been busy for me. I got married in Italy, got a new job, and am moving to a new house next weekend. So I've been a bit preoccupied. But I'll soon be working through my queue of at least a dozen projects and get them up soon. Cheers.

Internships at Instructables

Instructables needs interns, starting as soon as September! We're looking for smart, interesting people who can write well, are computer literate (sysadmin or coding skills are a definite plus, but not absolutely necessary), and are excited about sharing their knowledge with others. You'd do some site maintenance, community outreach, image manipulation, and some of the odds and ends necessary to make Instructables go. You'll also spend a few hours each week working on projects for your own Instructables, building things, taking pictures, and learning to use all of our fun tools! We'll pay you, too.You need to be creative, self-motivated, and learn quickly - things move fast in a start-up. We're particularly interested in people who are already involved with the site - a good set of well-written Instructables speaks louder than a long resume. If you're new to the site, show us something awesome that you've personally created. We want to know what you can do!Instructables is located in Alameda, CA (SF East Bay) with Squid Labs. Please send a resume, cover letter, and any other useful information to internships at instructables (dot com).

USB Driver

I got a USB cable fro the dollar store today for, well, one dollar. I was wondering if there was a way I could control the voltage output from my computer. I stripped the cable (it was male to male), and tested the output with my multimeter, too. I am getting about 5vdc, is that normal? I thought I got more out of the USB port. Like I said, I was wondering about any opensource usb control program I could use to control the USB voltage. Is this even possible? Also, I can't program AT ALL, or understand it, either.(if it matters)

Instructables Internship - Day 4

Alo Again,Well, this morning I didn't have the opportunity to burn my PB sandwich, not only because it was a PB&J sandwich, but because the oven was filled with semi-burnt roasted tomatoes/garlic.Anyhow, Today I did some more outreach for the new Launch It! Contest and... drumroll please.... Billy and I shipped all of the remaining Laser Cutter Contest Winners' prizes! Woo Hoo! Other than that, the morning was pretty chill. I'm getting used to the much more relaxed setting here at Instructables. At all of my other internships I've had, everything was always so fast-paced, tense, and ridiculously demanding. At Instructables, everyone's just Chill. Everyone enjoys what they're doing. It's awesome. Also, I downloaded the Instructables MySQL dumpfile from Rachel, and I'm in the process of getting it back into MySQL. Eventually, I'm going to try and make some cool new statistic features for you guys!Billy and I tested out some LEDs and my ultra-thin/flexible solar panels, which are hella awesome. The specs say that they get 3V @ 22 mA max in the sunlight, but yesterday, I got that in the shade. In the sunlight?: 4.19V!After that, Jason, Billy, Noah and I checked out the Water Jet in Instructables' machine shop. Billy had to cut some stuff for a project of his, but watching the machine "do its thing" was really cool. There's so much awesome stuff here, I still can't believe it.Noah, Jason, and I then picked out some stuff that was going to get thrown out to use in Proj. X, and we ordered the Surgical Tubing, too! Then, Jason, Mike (Works for Potenco), and I went to the beach to check out the kite boarders, and fly the trainer kite. (Eventually, we'll get to kite board, too!)Alright, I think that I'm actually going to go get started on Proj. X now...I've included some pictures that I've taken throughout the day.Cheers,-MuffinatorP.S. I came up with an awesome badge idea, and I'll draw it up today on the computer. I'll post it by tonight, so make sure you tell me if you like it or not!
