CAN SOMEONE PLEASE MAKE AN INSTRUCTABLE ON THIS

Can someone please make the device discussed below? According to researchers at Cambridge University, EMV (Europay, Mastercard, Visa) users must be even more aware of all charges applied to their accounts than ever before. They claim that there is an integral defect in EMV’s chip-and-PIN validation protocol for debit and credit cards. Subsequently, a machine can be built to alter and obstruct communications between a card and a point-of-sale terminal. The reason for alarm is that the terminal can be tricked into receiving a false PIN verification. Although there has been no record of this happening in the UK as of yet, researchers have created this hacking device in an attempt to illustrate the flaw. They were able to trick  a card reader into validating transactions, without correct  PIN numbers, with certified cards from six issuers including  Barclaycard, Co-operative Bank, Halifax, Bank of Scotland, HSBC and John Lewis. The researchers contend that it does not take a rocket scientist to make such a device. The financial attacker could carry the device in a backpack with wires running down a sleeve, to connect to the stolen valid card and the terminal. Basically the device would override the verify PIN instruction dictated by the terminal, causing it to respond with the 0×9000 PIN verification code that allows the transaction to go through, even though the PIN is incorrect, therefore giving the attacker full access to your money. Although this is a frightening scenario, there are ways for you, the consumer, to protect yourself. Always keep constant watch over your bank statements and look out for possible fraudulent charges. If you happen to lose your card, get in contact with your bank immediately to cancel it.

Official Instructables UK Meet Up - October 30th 2010

Jayefuu and I are planning to run the second Instructables UK Meet Up. We did not publicise the first meet up too much, as with it being the first one we wanted to take things easy. Now with a little more confidence, I think a forum topic inviting anyone interested to come along is perfectly suited. We plan to have a electronics based meet up, but some of the attendees are planning to bring along other projects, so you would be more than welcome to bring along something you are currently working on, or a few projects you would like to show off! The planned date for the meet up is Saturday the 30th October.  We will start off nice and early at 10am, and keep making through the afternoon, and into the evening, aiming to finish up around about 7pm. If you are turning up late, or leaving early, that's fine, we want to keep things fairly loose. We are holding the event in my local town of Alfreton, Derbyshire. Attached are a few maps showing alfreton, and also the Hall where we are hosting the meet up. The name of the place we are using is New Life Church, street view of the church is attached also. (if you want further travel directions, or help with accommodation just comment or PM) Anyone who is planning to come along, if you could comment below, or PM me. I need to get a good idea of numbers in order to plan accordingly! We plan to arrange to provide lunch, and will make decisions about dinner depending on turn out (we may just order in some fish and chips). To help cover costs we are asking for £5 for the day, this will include the cost of lunch, drinks and other general costs.  Thanks to Lizzy, and Steve, we should have a few kits to play with also. Listing those here so people can think what they might do. If you want to put your name down for a specific kit, just leave a comment below. Name  AMPLIFIER PROJECT KIT (PACK OF 5)  - £13.98 (2.70ish each) VELLEMAN FLASHING LED SWEETHEART KIT -  £5.58 VELLEMAN ROULETTE KIT - £11.10 MOBILE PHONE OPERATED SWITCH - £8.17 VELLEMAN SHAKING DICE KIT - £8.99 Reserved for Lemonie - VOICE CHANGER KIT RC - £10.52 POV WAND PROJECT KIT - £6.29 I am still hoping to source some drawdio kits, but thats harder than it sounds in the UK! I look forward to hearing from you! Jake - gmjhowe

Server maintenance, 7-26-2010 20:00:00 PST

We're about to undergo some routine maintenance on one of our production servers, the one that handles our image processing and storage.  I've offloaded everything I can from it, but for a couple of hours, file uploads will be unavailable.  It's also possible that some people will see a few missing images.  I'll turn uploading back on as soon as the maintenance is complete, and I will post here again. UPDATE: unexpected problems and I have aborted the maintenance procedures.  Will try again next week after some further research. UPDATE: maintenance is running now, 2010-07-26, 20:00:00 PDT.  Image uploading is OFF.  It will run for an estimated four to six hours (there are a lot of images to go through!) after which I will turn uploading back on and post here again.  Sorry for the inconvenience to those who are trying to post things! FINAL UPDATE: maintenance is complete, we now return you to your regularly scheduled full site featureset.  Please let me know if you have any trouble uploading files or images from here out.  You can PM me or your favorite site admin, or email service@instructables.com.

USMC Vertical Marathon - 24th April 2010 - UPDATED - we did it

This may be of interest to some of you that climb and walk or love being outdoors. I'm a member of the University of Surrey Mountaineering Club. On April 24th we are planning to have our second ever Vertical Marathon, a charity event during which between 30-50 of us we will attempt to climb just over 26 miles.... UP! The event will be held at the newly opened Surrey Sports Park climbing wall where we will each have to climb about 80 of the 10m routes. We are raising money for the Mountain Rescue Council (MRC). In 2007 we raised £3995. This year we're aiming to hit £5000. The MRC was chosen because of the Club’s regular trips to mountainous areas and the USMC's recognition of the vital role fulfilled by the Mountain Rescue teams. It is hoped that the Vertical Marathon 2010 and similar challenges will encourage newcomers to the sport, raise awareness for the Mountain Rescue Council involved and put a smile on people’s faces. The MRC do a LOT of great work with very little funds, and not just for climbers. If you'd like to sponsor us, our just giving page is here. If you'd like to read a little more about how the money would be spent first, here is the MRC's page on how donations are spent. Thanks. Wish me/us luck!

knex rideable roller coaster with mr.muggles chair (big build 2010)

Ok then when you read this you may die of shock so i am going to tell you the bad things before so you dont get to shocked by what it is. 1.its not very long 2. it uses lots of pieces 3. it sticks and doesnt run smothely along the track 4. theres no bumpers so you can fall of. i thinks thats all of them so now i will tell you what it is. its a rideable knex rollercoaster ( a roller coaster you can ride on) now thank mr.muggle as i used his chair and have his permission to use it in this forum. you can proberly build the track and the new base oof the chair from the pictures. you dont have to change the top of the chair to how my one is(my back rest is like that because i got bored building it and was low on pieces).i could of made the track longer but i was getting bored of making the same thing and couldnt be asked to continue. im not sure how much weight it can hold so be careful and spread out all of your weight when onboard. ps: this message is to visper123,as i told you its not a car and its not a whatever that other thing was and you didnt hack my webcam and i dont have a webcam and my school bag is green (to everyone that doesnt know what im talking about then go and read the comments on the sneak peak), so there.

How do I remove the shifter knob in my automatic transmission 2010 Buick Lucerne?

I recently became the proud new owner of a 2010 Buick Lucerne CXL, and i'm in the process of customizing a few minor things in the interior. Which leads me to my question. As I think the stock shifter knob is very boring and of course standard-looking, I am attempting to replace it with an aftermarket knob that uses set screws. However, I cannot work out how to remove the stock shifter knob to put the new one in, as it is not threaded like most shifter knobs are. I found on an online forum information about the 2006 edition which suggests that in that model year, the knob friction-fit onto the shift column and all you have to do to remove it is put the car in neutral (with the engine off) and pull straight up on the knob. Does anyone know if this is the same for the 2010 model? ANY help would be very greatly appreciated, as i cannot find any information on my model year anywhere else on the internet, and it is not included in the car owner's manual. Thank you! :-)

not able to submit an instructable

I tried to post a new instructable at 11.30PM PST on May 9th 2010. While it is uploading the pics, it just erased everything that I typed for the steps. I had to redo the entrie thing and at 11.55PM PST on May 9th 2010 I re-submitted the new instructable, for the paper cup contest. Now the site threw up saying that it cannot accept the instructable since deadline has crossed. According to the rules, the site should be able to accept entries till 11.59PM PST. It was so frustrating to see that my instructable cannot be posted after spending so many hours of hardwork..

Looking for help to change songs in Fisher Price Music box Record Player 2010

Hi there. I'm interested in seeing if anyone knows if it's possible and considerably easy to change the songs that the Fisher Price Music Box Record Player plays. This is NOT the original version with an actual music box in it. This is 2010 version which has some sort of sound chip in it. We have opened it up and it seems like you should be able to just replace the chip that has the music on it but we have no idea how to do that. Just curious if anyone has any ideas! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Eric Wilhelm "What will users pay for" on O'Reilly Webcast Thursday, April 15, 2010

On Thursday, April 15, 2010 at 10 AM PT, I'll be doing a live webcast on O'Reilly's Meet Experts Online titled "What will users pay for?"  This is a lead-up to my Web 2.0 Expo panel discussion, What Our Users Will Pay For.  I'll be talking about Instructables' business model, and some of the things I've learned along the way about running a small company.  You can join for free, and send questions into the interviewer via chat.  I'll post a video for anyone who can't make the live event. Here's the description of the event: If advertising alone won't pay the bills and paywalls are tough to get right, how can web-based businesses make money? This is a question Instructables.com CEO Eric Wilhelm has already confronted. We'll dig into the Instructables model and consider potential solutions in this video Q&A.; Hopefully see you there!

Two bugs with Instructables layout update -- Step 1 is inescapable

In a recent post, I mentioned that the presentation of Instructables had changed slightly.  Instead of the first ten steps in a "table of contents", now you see the Intro and Step 1 in full.  It turns out that there are two bugs associated with this change. First, Step 1 seems to  always show up, whether you've viewing the Intro, or viewing Step 17. UPDATE 17 Aug 2010:  This has been fixed. Second, when you click on the links for either the Intro or Step 1,  you see the same thing, those two steps together in full. UPDATE 17 Aug 2010:  Actually, if you click on the Step 1 icon in this case, the page jump-scrolls to the start of the Step 1 text.  This is a feature, not a bug. There's no problem with "View All Steps" (for paid users).  That behaves the same way it always has. UPDATE 17 Aug 2010:  "View All Steps" now uses jump-scrolling.  If you click on any of the step icons at the top of the I'ble, your browser will scroll to the start of that step on the same page, rather than loading a new page.    This is a feature, not a bug.

the welder with sunglasses

I just ran into this interesting post of an italian woman living in Addis Abeba: https://ferengiaddis.wordpress.com/2010/09/21/il-saldatore-con-gli-occhiali-da-sole/ Since it's funny and explained with humor I wish to share it with you: I can of course translate it into English ;-) "The welder with sunglasses Today a man came to weld our gate, because it had come off a metal rod. He came with a wheelbarrow containing the tools of the trade: a hammer, a few pieces of iron and a welder. This one! https://ferengiaddis.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/saldatrice.jpg When I saw it I ran home to get my camera, deeply convinced that the entire operation had to be documented; and in fact I was not wrong. To connect the welding machine to the wall socket of my living room there was no extension cable. But here no one lose heart for so little: only took a few lengths of electrical cable connected to the least worst and fixed with a few pieces of cloth and the problem is solved. https://ferengiaddis.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/prolunga.jpg Of course, such a link at the end did not have a plug to be inserted into the socket, and when I pointed it out the welder looked at me with pitying air, and carelessly shoved the two bare wires in the little holes in the wall. https://ferengiaddis.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/presa.jpg Only a few sparks, but in the end it worked out great, the welder has completed its work smartly wearing a pair of sunglasses as protection, the power went out just three times and the gate is as good as new. Just for the record, the wall socket is now a bit melted..." I wish there will be many authors here like that "welder with sunglasses" ps: don't try that by yourselves!!
