I want to know more about the world cup soccer teams, and their players.

As I said, I want to know more about soccer teams and their players. If someone knows and is willing to answer, I would be very grateful. What I'm really wanting to know right now, is what all teams are (or were) competing for the 2010 world cup? I would also really like to know each of their players and the players positions. I realize each of those are big questions by themselves. So I won't expect you to answer all, or even one. But if I could get a link that has the information on all the soccer teams, or a partial answer, that would be great. Thank you for your help. Sinisterly, The Not So Nice Guy

Power Point only works over remote assistance? Answered

One of our employees has a problem with pptx files in PowerPoint 2010. When  she opens her pptx file it only opens  the first slide and all the top tool bars in PowerPoint are grey and can’t be accessed. The steps I have taken are as follows: Installed the office 2007 compatibility pack although only some of the PowerPoint files were pptx. I tried open with Office 2007 but without success. I thought maybe it was created in Office 2007.   I have searched the web high and low for a solution for this and can’t find one single case with the same issues. I myself have never seen this before. The user is a local admin on her laptop. I have to add that there are no errors or warnings in event viewer. Has anyone seen anything like this?

I want to make a laptop case from scratch. How can I get the dimensions of my laptop?

Hi instructables! I recently bought an expensive laptop and want to protect it, but all the protective covers on the market for this particular model are terrible (damaging to the laptop over time or ill-fitting). I want to build a case from scratch by CAD modelling the design, then running it through something like a wood cnc. The only problem is, I need the exact dimensions/form of the laptop to create a skin-tight fit. Any ideas on how I can get this data? Can you think of a better process than the one I've outlined? I'm open to working with new materials! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some inspiration: http://design-milk.com/images/2010/09/macbook-cutting-board.jpg

Need help choosing a good bike lock?

So I have this really nice 2010 specialized mountain bike, and I need a good bike lock for it. I have looked into making a chain lock, but I don't feel so good about it. right now I'm looking at both the Kryptonite evolution mini U lock and the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboutit mini U lock. both seem to have their ups and downs. the new york is considered the most secure lock in the world, but seems to be heavy and more expensive. the evolution is cheaper, but had been known to be able to break into with a pen. I can't really choose between the two. any suggestions? aslo I would like to hear of other good locks also. preferably sold secure gold. Thanks. *sorry to be picky.

Another visible change unannounced -- GONE

Another minor update appears to have been rolled out without a post to Site Updates.  In this case, it's the new "view raters" capability in the INFO box. UPDATE 13 May 2010:  According to Staff, this "feature" is for Admins only, and was not intended for public release.  The bug has been fixed. When it was being tested (I presume) a couple of days ago, it got the immediate attention of the K'nex community (who are, as you'd expect, inordinately preoccupied with status among their peers).  Now that it seems to be "permanent," they continue to debate their tribal concerns about the information now available. I'd be very interested in a "view from the top" posting about this feature (which I think is actually useful and interesting for data-mining), and how Instructables authors can benefit from it.

Hullo all... I received the email telling me that I am awesome... and indeed that my I'ble on Trebuchets is also of the same calibre... BUT... Giving away a 1 year Pro Instructables membership!

I'm giving away a one year Pro membership.  Why?  I won one in the Homemade Holidays contest.  I plan on continuing to support Instructables with payments every two years.  So I want to share the love.  Here's how to get a chance at winning.  Your account must have been created on or prior to January 18, 2010.  I don't want people creating fake accounts. You must not already have a Pro membership. You must have at least one Instructable published by midnight Pacific time on January 24, 2010.  It does not need to be new - it could be years old.  (It must meet the guidelines here - in other words, have original photos, decent writing, and reasonable organization.  If you want to know if yours will qualify, post a link to it in the comments below and I'll give you feedback.) Subscribe to me!  (Just click on the orange box over there ---> ) On Sunday, January 24th at 11PM Alaska time I will tally all my subscribers, eliminate pro members, and then do a random drawing.  I'll make sure that the other criteria (no duplicate entries, "worthy" Instructable, etc.) are met and will announce the winner here. Photo by my brother Kevin Dean. Sorry!  This "contest" is now CLOSED. The winner is... II.13 I used the random integer generator at Random.org to select a number based on my subscribers.  Thank you to my new subscribers. (I guess if you want to you can unsubscribe from me... but if I win another I'll probably do this again... and no matter what I do my subscribers will have a shot at it.)  For anyone interested, I added 63 new subscribers.  I benefited by interacting with some new people, checking out some different projects - some really undervalued ones too! And of course, thanks for the Instructables staff for letting me do this!

Number of contest wins

Hi, when people see the prizes I have won, they tend to ask me quite often, whether anybody else has won more often than me. While I knew, that wold630 has won more often than me I had no idea where I stood. So I sat down with my boyfriend to write a small script. Since you might be interested too, I decided to post the results here (starting from four and more, else there would be to many people). They might be off here and there by one contest (especially if a patch has not been handed out), but should be pretty accurate. Thanks to everybody who has voted for me and especially instructables, for hosting so many awesome contests. Is there a simple way more or less of tracking an instructable being re-posted to other sites, other then googling? Answered

So, recently had this post on one of my instructables:  "awesome work!!! saw this mentioned on engadget which is awesome!! http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/22/oval-bookshelf-is-the-perfect-case-for-this-diy-car-stereo-radio/" - I love that this person pointed this out, as when I googled my bookcase, i found it had been re-posted to over 73 different gadget, science and blog sites.  Not to mention being translated in Japanese, Chinese, Cyrillc and others.  I never would have known or thought to look for it on other sites.  The question is, is there an easy way to tell if my other instructables have been re-posted to other sites, like a way to track it?  Other then googling?

Nissan invests in electric cars

Motor-manufacturer Nissan have announced a £200 million ($330 million) investment in a factory intended to produce lithium ion batteries for electric cars.Along with the news from Nissan, Peter Mandelson (Business Secretary) said a "low-carbon economic area" would be established in the North East.As part of the project, 750 charging points would be installed across the region and a training centre specialising in the manufacture and maintenance of low-carbon vehicles would be set up. "The North East has distinguished itself as the first specialised region for ultra-low-carbon vehicles," Lord Mandelson said. The announcement from Nissan comes only days after its Japanese rival Toyota said it would start manufacturing the new Auris hybrid petrol-electric vehicle at its plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire from mid-2010. One mans garbage...

Really is another mans gold! I'm the type of person who, when seeing something internesting, picks it up. For instance, I have found: @ A working VCR (and I use it) @ A small TV (not broken, just REALLY old) @ Microwave ovens (several, not a single one broken) @ Old computers (the joys of Harddrive magnets) @ A 27 inch Panasonic TV (it's working perfectly, i use it daily) UPDATE 10 July 2010 @ A working DVD player (slot jammed, fixed it) @ A PlayStation 1 (not tested, I'll report back) (tested it with the AV cable I also found, it works!) There's no shame in taking "trash" off the streets! I got some funny looks having a small TV strapped to my bike, I take them as compliments! What I'm trying to say here is basically Save the planet, finders keepers!

Links Don't Do Anything in Emailed Newsletter

I received the emailed newsletter, Giant Swiss Army Machete, Box Fan Mosquito Trap, 2-Liter Rocket, and found that some of the links don't do anything when you click on them. I tried the newsletter in two separate email clients. If you hover mouse over those alleged links, the pointer turns into an I-beam. Windows 7 pro, outlook office 2010, gmail. The following links don't work: 1.  All captions under each instructable project image. 2.  "All Contests >>" button. 3.  "See All Featured >>" button. 4.  "Customize Feed >>" button. 5.  "Browse Contests >>" button. Workarounds: *  For the captions under the images, click on the image instead. *  For the buttons, go to the Instructables site main page and find the items in the header.

East Bay Mini Maker Faire

Maker Faire is spreading.  I've just become aware of a local school which is holding a "Mini Maker Faire" as a fundraiser.  The website with details is at http://ebmakerfaire.wordpress.com/.  It's approved by Maker Faire and is being promoted on the main Maker Faire site's calendar.  This particular mini fair is a fundraiser for the Park Day School.  It will be held on October 24, 2010, at the school itself.  Call for participation is now open, and closes on August 31st.  If you're local to the San Francisco Bay Area, check it out! Other Mini Maker Faires going on soon are in Aspen Colorado on July 10, and in Denver Colorado on July 17.  I like this trend!  And of course the Detroit Maker Faire, which is not mini at all, is coming up on July 31 and August 1, in Detroit.  Check out the calendar at http://www.makerfaire.com/.

I think I accidentally flagged someone that I didn't want to......

It was in the forum:  https://www.instructables.com/community/What-Do-You-Like-To-Draw-1/ This post:  craftyv says:                                                                                     Dec 25, 2010. 2:02 PM   I have been drawing (doodling) for years and have kept most of my pics. They tend to be small, 2" square or circle and were all black and white originally but lately they became coloured and often up to 10 on an A4 page. Geometric shapes, convoluted lines and even simple patterns are prominant. I have decided to show them to our Instructables community somehow. Perhaps as an Instructable, something like. [How to fill hours of your time and enjoy every minute] I actually draw in meetings, watching tv, on the phone etc. What do you draw? When I REALLY wanted to flad the group of links in the post above.....My apologies for the mistake.

Useless Machine was on The Colbert Report!

Make Magazine's editor-in-chief, Mark Frauenfelder was on the CR promoting his new book and he brought a few gadgets with him.  Imagine my surprise when he brought out the Useless Machine. After letting Colbert try the machine, Mark explains that it's only function is to turn itself off.  The audience laughs and Colbert says "I'll tell you what it does Mark...it breaks my heart." I guess I should mention that the machine will be featured in the next MAKE magazine and that was why Mark brought it on the show! My mind is officially blown. Mark had sent me a heads-up letting me know about this, but I didn't receive it until after watching the show.  I'm a regular viewer of the CR so for me this was especially sweet.  Thanks Mark! http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/311944/june-08-2010/mark-frauenfelder Cheers, Brett

Bug in search results which include forum topics

When an Instructables search includes forum topics or comments from forum topics in the results, each of those items has an error associated with it.  Instructables which are search results have a trailer line "by in : ", where each of the keyword items is an appropriate hyperlink. For example, searching for wind tunnel includes   VAWT Lenz type. Stage 1. Converting wind power to rotary motion. Jul 9, 2010 ... This VAWT takes advantage of a natural wind tunnel affect I get between 2 of my sheds. The unit has to be free standing so it can be moved ... by Dr Qui in workshop: energy But the same search also has the following: Wind energy to light up a car top sign? I was thinking that it might be a good idea to use the wind from the car ... that said if the sign is hollow you could make a wind tunnel ... TypeError: Vars.richSnippet.document is undefined: Vars.richSnippet && Vars.richSnippet.document.author

Make your own organic solar cells.

I occasionally see questions from people wanting to know if they can make their own solar cells.Previously, the answer was "no".Now...The latest issue of Science in School contains a "how to" for making organic solar cells from dyes instead of silicon, that produce useful amounts of electricity.Link to "how to".Also in this issue...The archive of back issues is here (can you find my article?).If you browse the magazine, and like it, you might consider passing the URL on to friends, colleagues and potential advertisers. Previously funded by an EU grant, the print magazine is distributed free. The website is funded until October 2010, but the print magazine needs finance (sound familiar?)Anyway, if you are part of, or know of, a company that would like to target their advertising to science educators across Europe, point them at http://www.scienceinschool.org/advertising or contact them directly at advertising@scienceinschool.org

Ripped off by Hearst Mazines(SCAM company)

I'm wondering if anyone here has ever subscribed to magazines such as Popular Magazines. Four months ago I subscribed through Hearst Magazines paid by credit card, thinking Popular Magazines is a pretty well recognised magazines. First two months I could put up with thinking there might be some error. Writing to the people in Hearst Magazine only resulted in auto-reply messages. Third month there was one reply with a case i.d.  At first I thought I was getting somewhere. Still, nothing happened. I wrote to them again showing some frustration, I asked whether I will be getting my first issue this November or next November. The reply was: "Thank you for contacting Popular Mechanics. We have extended your subscription so it will continue through the November 2011 issue. Thank you, Popular Mechanics Andrew   Customer's email address: aoandy@yahoo.com Case id: 12214311 " What does that mean? I have written to Consumer Protection. I doubt any action will come soon enough. But I am writing here as a warning to anyone and everyone to beware of this scamming organisation. If you feel the need to rid the world of such people, I encourage you to spread this message. Thank you all. We have received your subscription order. interest tags on profile (e.g. "sewing") link to empty results pages

This might just be a bad night for the Instructables search function. What I observed: I added tags to my profile for interests ("embroidery, sewing") and saved them. I clicked through the links on my updated profile to what I presume should have been a search results page showing other Instructables users with the same interests: ( https://www.instructables.com/tag/type-user/interests-sewing/ ).  I saw a blank page.  I tried clicking through "embroidery" with the same empty page resulting.  I thought "huh, maybe it's just my profile?"  So I tried clicking through from Rachel's profile with the same results -- a reasonable looking URL in the address bar, but an empty page. Attached is a screenshot of the empty results page 16-June-2010 21:49 Pacific at the URL https://www.instructables.com/tag/type-user/interests-sewing/

Please Allow Me to (Re)Introduce Myself

Greetings Folks! My name is Randy and I am a "new" member of the Community Management staff. For those of you who have been around a while, you may remember me from my time as serving as the first Community Manager of this website starting in 2007, or from my role as the Technology Editor in 2010, or even as the founder of the Instructables Design Studio back in 2013.  Albeit a lot has changed in my life since I last spent some time hanging out here in the forums - I completed grad school... moved to NYC... decided to get married... - my enthusiasm for this website has not.  I'm super-excited to be back in the role of community manager and more actively participating on the site.  I look forward to getting know everybody new, and catching up with those of you who have also been around forever (lookin' at you Kiteman and Caitlinsdad!) Please let me know if you have any questions or feedback for me.

Could dogs and cats communicate with people using this eye tracking method?

http://hackaday.com/2010/12/11/kids-type-with-their-eyes-robot-arm-prints-their-words/ This post is a few days old.   I posted a comment asking the same question on HAD, but I thought it may get more exposure here. If you've ever noticed, dogs pupils really reflect light, even visible light like from a cars headlights. I would think this system would be able to track a dog's eye movement as well. This would need to start out much simpler, to teach the animal to use the system.   Perhaps give him 2 choices, in the form of recognizable icons.   I am imagining a picture of a steak and a picture of a dog going for a walk.   Eventually the dog might learn to recognize the symbols.   Once this happens, the interface could be expanded to more choices.   I dont know if it would be possible to teach english ( or any other spoken/written language) but maybe.

I am trying to set up an accelerometer with 3 LED lights that light up dependent on the Y axis reading... the following code I have but I am getting error messages relating to the "{" on some of my lines of code. Cool Misty Morning Simulation

Here's an idea: Yesterday I was out on my motorcycle and it started to drizzle or mist very lightly. Helmet starts fogging so I open all the vents. The cool, clean and misty air rushing through the helmet was like a sort of inner piece. Like those mountain mornings or early fall mornings by the lake. Just gave a great feeling and I instantly felt refreshed and energetic. Anybody have an idea for recreating this feeling in a small space, say 10 x 10 room. I do have a cool mist humidifier for when I am sick but it is not nearly the same feeling. I've tried searching for some sort of product but have come up mostly empty handed and imagine it would be rather pricey anyways. Examples of said feeling: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-STNHl9kfFc8/TYmDflagaUI/AAAAAAAADPA/fbkHM6FQttQ/s1600/Morning%2BFog.jpg http://www.sticksite.com/blog-2010/foggy.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c3/Misty_morning.jpg If you have a thought or idea I thank you plenty!!

Help! Flash/fiber optic wire question

Help help! I was following the instructions at http://tutorialgeek.blogspot.com/2010/11/fix-flash-on-nikon-d70-dslr.html to fix a flash on a camera I got on ebay. All was going great until the black wire came out. I tried putting it back in and got a terrible shock, and the flash no longer worked. So I thought it was a grounding wire. I tried to strip it and put it back in its little holes, but it did NOT want to strip. Downloading the service manual later showed me that it didn't want to strip because it's really fiber optics in there. In trying to fix it some more, I got shocked a few more times, pretty strongly (with the battery out, even). I'm not sure if I've fried a component or not, but at least nothing smells bad. I'd like to try to put a new fiber optic wire in there, but I have no idea where to find one. Can anyone help me? The gauge of the wire is pretty standard for small electronics. Please let me know!! Susan

Here are this week's stats. Some people may be missing, there's a bug in the script that stops it going onto the second page of members in the group. Sorry, I've not had time to fix it, I've been busy writing code to embed a list of links to a user's Instructables on their website. I'll try fix it for next week. Thanks DJ Radio for reminding me to run it today! Almost forgot. Layout changes not mentioned in Rachel's update

There were two fairly substantial (from the user's perspective) changes that Rachel forgot to mention in her Site Update post. First, by moving the search box and button up to the masthead, they have also eliminated the old-style "graphical search" interface completely.  It doesn't even show up as an alternative when a Google-driven search is made.  This has already led to two user complaints (here and here). Could the old-style interfce at least be put back on the search results page? UPDATE 17 Aug 2010: The "graphical search" link is back on the search-results page. Second, the interface when you first read an Instructable has been cleaned up substantially. All the steps, with photos and hover-text, are still there, but instead of a truncated table of contents (only the first ten steps), now the full intro and first step are shown immediately. It'll take a bit of getting use to for the old-timers, but I think it's a better interface for new users. Thanks to Rachel for getting these updates out, and especially for answering (pun intended) some of the requests from the community!

Official Instructables UK Meet Up - October 30th 2010

Jayefuu and I are planning to run the second Instructables UK Meet Up. We did not publicise the first meet up too much, as with it being the first one we wanted to take things easy. Now with a little more confidence, I think a forum topic inviting anyone interested to come along is perfectly suited. We plan to have a electronics based meet up, but some of the attendees are planning to bring along other projects, so you would be more than welcome to bring along something you are currently working on, or a few projects you would like to show off! The planned date for the meet up is Saturday the 30th October.  We will start off nice and early at 10am, and keep making through the afternoon, and into the evening, aiming to finish up around about 7pm. If you are turning up late, or leaving early, that's fine, we want to keep things fairly loose. We are holding the event in my local town of Alfreton, Derbyshire. Attached are a few maps showing alfreton, and also the Hall where we are hosting the meet up. The name of the place we are using is New Life Church, street view of the church is attached also. (if you want further travel directions, or help with accommodation just comment or PM) Anyone who is planning to come along, if you could comment below, or PM me. I need to get a good idea of numbers in order to plan accordingly! We plan to arrange to provide lunch, and will make decisions about dinner depending on turn out (we may just order in some fish and chips). To help cover costs we are asking for £5 for the day, this will include the cost of lunch, drinks and other general costs.  Thanks to Lizzy, and Steve, we should have a few kits to play with also. Listing those here so people can think what they might do. If you want to put your name down for a specific kit, just leave a comment below. Name  AMPLIFIER PROJECT KIT (PACK OF 5)  - £13.98 (2.70ish each) VELLEMAN FLASHING LED SWEETHEART KIT -  £5.58 VELLEMAN ROULETTE KIT - £11.10 MOBILE PHONE OPERATED SWITCH - £8.17 VELLEMAN SHAKING DICE KIT - £8.99 Reserved for Lemonie - VOICE CHANGER KIT RC - £10.52 POV WAND PROJECT KIT - £6.29 I am still hoping to source some drawdio kits, but thats harder than it sounds in the UK! I look forward to hearing from you! Jake - gmjhowe

VBA Code Needed for a certain formula in Excel?

I have an excel sheet, and I am trying to bring some sort of automation in to that sheet (since I use it quite often) with the help of macros. The fact is that I am really new to macros and VBA programming language, so I need a little help in writing the code to find the 10th percentile (the formula for it is PERCENTILE(array, 0.1) for each bin value (50, 100, 150). If you see the picture attached, the wanted percentile values are in Q, the bins for which I want to find the 10th percentile value, are given in Column M (50,100,150) and the main data on which the 10 percentile value will be based is given in Column D. By Using the data given in D and filtering out a certain bin width in column E (Example: Filtering bin width 50 or 100), we could find the Percentile value against each of the bin value given in Column N. As said earlier I am new to VBA code, so any help will be appreciated in order to find the percentile values for each bin. the link to the original spread sheet is given below: http://bit.ly/XCgqtK
