FIFA Day 2 Group B results

Another day of good matches at the 2010 FIFA world cup. The group B games were as good as the first games here are the results. Game 1 Korea republic 2- Greece 0 LEE Jung Soo 7th minute Park Ji Sung 52nd minute Game 2 Argentina 1- Nigeria 0 Heinze 6th minute Personal thoughts on game 1: I didn't get to see the two goals but I foud it an amazing coincidence that they were both scored 7 minutes into each half. Maybe the coach had planned this. If that is true I really want to see Korea's next match. It seemed to me that Greece wasn't playing very nicely as they constantly kept shouting at each other. I personally think this is why they lost. Good luck to both teams and I hope Greece plays nicer next time. Personal thoughts on game 2: This game i was able to watch except for the first few minutes. I missied the goal but I saw it in the Highlights. I found this game much more enthusiastic than the last one. Mainly because every time Aregentina commited a foul they apollagized to the Player. This is something that is needed in a lot of games. It's a great sign of good sportsman ship. Nigeria had an amazing defense. It will be hard to score when playing against them. I think all these teams still have a chance to enter the finals. Good luck to you all. Amazing games! Please Comment on the teams and games.

call for ideas and projects for a new publication

The Wild Pansy Press Book of Rainy Day Activities A Call for Works The Wild Pansy Press will be producing a publication in which a range of artists, designers, activists make concrete suggestions for new cultural activities in a Post-Credit-Crunch society, with an emphasis on the practical, the sustainable, the challenging and the subversive... The book will be a collection of templates, instructions and recipes which can be used to make or to generate Art works in the widest sense. The book will include some pieces about ideas raised by the projects as well as the "instructions" and templates, parts lists, supplier contacts, artists' information and plenty of visual material. Everything will be copyright-free and we will encourage readers to get back to us with their own ideas or adaptations of the pieces The book will be our contribution to the exhibition CRUNCHTIME: artists' responses to the global credit crisis and its timetable of associated events and will be available free at the main exhibition venue in York for the duration of the 8-day event in February 2010 and will then be on sale through various distributors, independent bookshops and galleries worldwide and from our own website. In addition, larger-format supporting items such as detailed plans, circuit diagrams and motivational posters will be also available as free downloads from the Wild Pansy site. The publication will be a squared-off A4 format (210 x 210 mm) and its design will reflect the contents. We are currently negotiating funding to cover the costs of making selected "prototypes" by contributors. So we invite you to submit your ideas, proposals and plans for things to make, things to perform, things to read, models for organisation, models for action, recipes for (avoiding) disaster, recipes for big dinners... to: info@wildpansypress.com www.wildpansypress.com

Who wants a 3 month Pro membership

Over that year or so I have won five 3-month PRO memberships, and would like to start giving them away.  I would like to start by giving 2 of them away in a contest of sorts.  I have seen others do this and this seems like an awesome way to do it.  So here goes Submit a new instructable, will say no older then... December 31st 2010 Try to make it as awesome as possible, cause i like to use the word awesome around here alot! I will be focusing on creativity and the ease of construction for people new to this site. You have to make it yourself, jobbing out to have something cut-out IE, Ponoko is great and all, and if I was closer would probably do it myself, but the average maker is stuck using rinky-dink power tools.  Making something with those rinky-dink power tools those is true awesomeness! On second thought, I have rented power tools before, step 4 is more less the same as this so what ever means you have is good! Dead-line of February 20, 2011 - I'll try to judge it as quick as possible That's about it I guess, make sure to message me, post a link, shoot a flaming arrow or something that gets my attention to your instructable and tell me why you deserve it. Random begging, flattery and bribing is also good Others that have done this before, please comment as to any pointers that may make this smoother!  Thanks!

home made car heater control help needed

I have a heater control panel from a 2010 dodge journey that I want to use in a custom made kit car. The control knobs are all based upon resistance, no IC's are used in the panel. The fan speed knob has 4 positions, off/low/med/high (only uses two pins on the board connector) The temp knob has 13 positions from hot to cold in which the AC is automatically triggered from the middle position to full cold, and the heat from warm to full hot (only uses three pins, one common and one for each side of the knobs range) The 3 position selector switch (face/bi-level/floor) also uses only two pins. This board is designed for a max of 5 volts, which I already have that instructable for that. But what I need help on is how to make 3 sets of controls for the various knobs. One for fan speed one for the heat/ cold and one for the position selector switch. Im trying to find a way to create a switching action created by various voltages as they are running through the control board, that will trigger 12 volt effects for the fan speed, and a servo for the heater duct changer. The heater knob will need to turn on or off the AC, and control a shut off valve for the coolant heater control valve. But like a RC servo it would turn in relation to the voltage applied. Would transitors work in this case? Any ideas? Id like to get past this and move into the fabrication of the system. But this is stopping me cold right now.

Cosplaying next August, any one else?

Hey every one, huge making project coming up for me (in terms of time, not size) because I'm going to SMASH! Cosplay Convention, Sydney, Australia in August 2010. I'm going with a group of friends from my school as Vocaloid characters and I get to be Kaito! Would any one else in Australia be going? Any way, it should be awesome and I'm excited like hell even though it's 9 months away. I'll keep every one posted on how the out fit's going, I'm going to see if I can get the wig off eBay next week. Then we're all going to Spotlight (fabric store) a little after christmas to get a tonne of the same fabric, but different colors for each character. Then I'm doing the scarf, then the pants, then the undergarments and then the coat. Any tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated, I'm not amazing at sewing but it should turn out alright, I'll probably start the coat about 6 months from now because I don't want to grow out of it before the convention! By the way, any tips on dying my hair / getting a wig of bright blue? And also, dying my eye brows? (God, this'll look weird at school...) Update #1        18/10/2009 More pictures. I've added some drawn pictures (mine) of my design, you can see the front and back here. First picture: Another cosplaying Vocaloid group, but no Gakupo or Megurine Luka. I'll be the one at the back left. Second picture: SMASH! convention logo.

Canada Set to Ban "Weed-n-Feed" Products

Re-evaluation Note REV2010-01, Uncoupling of Fertilizer-Pesticide Combination Products for Lawn and Turf Uses 2 February 2010 HC Pub: 100037 ISBN: 978-1-100-14700-0 (print version) ISBN: 978-1-100-14701-7 (PDF version) Catalogue number: H113-5/2010-1E (print version) Catalogue number: H113-5/2010-1E-PDF (PDF version) Table of Contents 1.0 Purpose 2.0 Scope 3.0 Background 4.0 Regulatory decision 1.0 Purpose This document is to communicate to stakeholders the decision to uncouple fertilizer-pesticide combination products intended for lawn and turf uses. 2.0 Scope This regulatory action is focussed on the lawn and turf uses of fertilizer-pesticide combination products on the following types of turf: Lawn turf planted in or around residences, as well as public and commercial buildings including schools and cemeteries Sports and recreational turf such as turf in parks, playgrounds, golf courses, zoos, botanical gardens and athletic playing fields These types of turf are collectively known as fine turf, which may be maintained by homeowners or by professional applicators. This regulatory action does not include agricultural uses of fertilizer-pesticide combination products (turf farms), or products that have a single active material with both fertilizer and pesticidal properties. 3.0 Background Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) regulates pesticides under the Pest Control Products Act including those intended for lawn and turf uses. All pesticide products that are registered for use and sale in Canada have undergone rigorous health and environmental risk assessments including the pesticides present in fertilizer-pesticide combinations. Pesticides are often combined with fertilizers and sold as fertilizer-pesticide combination products, which are regulated by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency under the Fertilizers Act. When pesticides are combined with fertilizer such that the two components can only be applied at the same time and to the same area, the delivery mechanism for the pesticide component is brought into question. The very nature of combination products removes the flexibility of applying the pesticide as a spot application due to the need to accommodate the fertilizer, which is designed for broadcast application to the entire lawn surface at specified times of the year. Pesticides should only be used when and where there is a need. Broadcast applications of pesticides over the whole area are warranted only for severe pest infestations that are widespread. As pest infestations are typically patchy, spot applications of pesticides to those areas are most often sufficient to ensure adequate control in turf. To be effective, fertilizers and pesticides must each be applied at the appropriate timings, which typically do not coincide. Fertilizers are most often applied in spring or early summer, and/or in late summer or fall. A spring-applied lawn fertilizer results in increased tillering and rapid growth as temperatures increase, resulting in turf of increased density. A fall-applied lawn fertilizer also results in increased tillering and may result in increased winter hardiness. The majority of pesticides found in pesticide-fertilizer combination products are broadleaf herbicides belonging to the synthetic auxin group of chemicals. This group of chemicals only controls broadleaf weeds that have emerged and are actively growing in the lawn. These herbicides are not preventative in that they will only control weeds that have emerged and they do not prevent weeds from becoming established in the lawn. Further, this group of chemicals is not long lasting in that they do not persist in the soil to prevent future weed infestations. Combination products have been purchased for their convenience and ease of use as a two-in-one product to address separate lawn maintenance issues (for example, nutrient deficiency and various pest infestations) with a single application. However, these products are unsuitable as a delivery mechanism because they support broadcast application of the pesticide when this might not be warranted. Ultimately, fertilizer and pesticide applications should be based on need. Fertilizer should only be used if the turf will benefit from additional nutrients, and pesticide should only be used as a broadcast treatment if the pest densities are sufficiently high across the area to be treated. Targeted, well-timed liquid formulations of pesticides minimize pesticide use on the lawn and turf sites. 4.0 Regulatory decision Based on consultation with the provinces, experts and registrants, the PMRA has concluded that fertilizer-pesticide combination products for lawn and turf uses do not support the goals of best practices for pest management in turf. The PMRA, in conjunction with Canadian Food Inspection Agency, is taking action to uncouple the fertilizer-pesticide combination products intended for lawn and turf uses. A date of last sale of 31 December 2012 for fertilizer-pesticide combination products for lawn and turf uses has been set in order to allow for replacement products to be made available where needed. Should situations arise to warrant the use of a fertilizer-pesticide combination product for lawn and turf uses, the PMRA will assess combination products in terms of the timing of application and flexibility to apply as a spot treatment, as well as potential risks to human health and the environment. The PMRA decision to uncouple fertilizer-pesticide combination products is not based on the health or environmental risk assessments but rather the nature of combination products. Combination products remove the flexibility of applying spot applications of the pesticide due to the need to accommodate the fertilizer, which is designed for broadcast application to the entire lawn surface at specified times of the year. Turf fertilizers will continue to be available for broadcast application when needed. Pesticide-only products will also continue to be available for lawn care use to homeowners and commercial applicators for either spot treatments of localized weed patches or for use as broadcast applications to severely infested turf areas when warranted. Although more time consuming, pest control in lawn and turf can be achieved with careful pesticide spot applications that target only the pests that are present and separate broadcast applications of fertilizers. Now if only the US were to follow suit...

Firefox won't work with pages on main Instructables page

I have Firefox 3.6 on WinXP. I have Javascript enabled but not Java. On the main Ible page are rows of Ibles. Each row is a category which shows 4 Ibls, followed by some page numbers, and a ">>" button for Next Page. Whenever I clikc a page number, or the >> Next Page button that row disappears. Sometimes the same Ibles appear in that row again even though multiple page number buttons are displayed. This function used to work, but stopped working about 2-4 weeks ago. Any ideas how to fix this? I have no other problems with any other website or forum. I do have Adblock but that only blocks images matching certain servers. I also have Flashblock. Cabin photos from indie book release- Mobile shack/trailer/fort/camper made from trash

As promised, here's some photos of one of the newer JUNK CABINS I'm building.... AND...  http://relaxshax.wordpress.com/2010/01/    Its part of the indie book I just released on small houses/shacks... This cabin's nothing fancy, and stands at a mere 24 square feet, but it sleeps two (bunk-style), has a dutch style door (made from two recycled kitchen cabinet doors), and all in all is almost completely made from salvaged roadside/free materials- even most of the screws and nails. The paint (to make all the forklift pallet wood and scrap wood appear uniform) was unfortunately purchased (but after I sold some salvaged/found junk on craigslist). Also, The roof was originally made from mdf plywood/particle board from old stereo cabinets and tv armoirs (and an entire junked roll of roofing paper), but that proved too heavy for this wheeled/mobile cabin. In the endrun, I bit the bullet and bought some tuffex panels for roofing, which DOES give the interior some nice natural light- the only reason I decided to "cheat" with this route.      When finished, the cabin will have a mini-woodstove created from an old propane gas tank I nabbed at the dump (safety/workability pending), an outdoor kitchen/prep area attached to the cabin., and perhaps a small broken solar light kit I rewired and fixed. I'll also finish the wine-bottle window (not shown).    Anyway, thanks for looking!  Built to fit a trailer of mine, I'm eventually planning on hauling it up to my land in VT, where it can be used as lo-fi guest cabin or sorts, for those who always forget to bring tents.

It'd be very much appreciated. So Ive just recently taken up amigurumi and Ive done some basic things like poke balls and mario mushrooms, easy enough. However,I want to move on to makng dolls. In particular I want to make a Naruto doll like the one in the link Ive attached. Im finding it difficult to find a pattern for this exact shape of doll though, and also I think I would like to make it smaller anyway.... would anyone be able to give me any advice on this? Actually if anyone knew of any video tutorials on making this shape doll that'd be even better. Also, regarding the colour change in the body, I know how to do a basic colour change where you would have say a row of red and then you change it to white so that the whole next row is white, but if you look at this doll there's a line of black going vertically up his torso and Im not sure how I would go about this type of colour change? It seems complicated? Like I said I would be sooooo grateful for any help anyone could give... I want to make this for someone special :) Thanks guys :)

Hanukah Candles (Left Overs)

Hey guys, I was wondering if a heat pad would work for melting wax. Since each year in Hanukah I use the left over wax to TRY and make candles. Here are the things I did. 2006: Used small tin foil molds. I didn't know how to make a wick then so I just used string. That was a FAILURE TOO. The string or so called wick didn't burn and just went to flames and didn't melt the wax and all it did was stay lit for 5 seconds. 2007: Kept wax and saved 2008: Kept wax and saved 2009: Used wax and try to put two blocks of wood together with a vice and drill a hole through the crack of both blocks of wood. It didn't work like I thought it would. The drill went all the way down the drill bit was atleast 5 in. long and it won't all the way down but when I poured the wax it didn't fill and over flowed. When I opened it up to try and see if there was a candle... well lets just say it turned out to be a half inch tall candle... and was about 1/5 of inch in diameter. I tried the to make a candle in a pot holder and forgot about the hole in the center then all the wax fell on the street and I didn't notice. It was such a pain to clean it off because it was on somebody elses lawn and I didn't want to mess up there lawn. WELL THAT WAS A FAILURE. 2010: This year I'm going to try to make scented candles. I'm going to use Tin Coke cans. I hope this works. I might use a heat pad since my mom doesn't want me to make wax in her cooking pans. If you have any suggestions send me E-MAILS at rexdino@sbcglobal.net or just post a message or private message me. I would prefer E-mail since I almost never check this website because I have about 20 other sites I have to check.

So why does the newsletter (28/03/10) have "old" ible's?

So I presume many of you who frequent the instructables site are all signed in to the newsletter. Now maybe you have noticed anything about the newsletter you got today but I have! And that is that the newsletter doesn't have any new ible's! I have been noticing that it has happend before so when I got the latest newsletter (28/03/10) I decided to investigate if I was right. I clicked on every ible that was in the newsletter and noticed that none of these ibles were created  in 2010! All the ibles were dated from December 2006 to december 2009! So my question is, why? I know there were some good ibles since the last newsletter. And many new ibles got featured every day! I have searched for some examples I find newsletter worthy and I would definitly go to the site if I saw these and didn't know them before: www.instructables.com/id/Pallet-Adirondack-Chair/ www.instructables.com/id/DIY-R2D2-Lamp-from-10-IKEA-lamp/ www.instructables.com/id/Red-Oak-Pyramid-Bow/ www.instructables.com/id/Leather-Steampunk-Top-Hat/ Just some examples from the top of my hat. I've been going through my emails and I noticed you send a newsletter the 25th (25/03/10) that did have alot of new ibles. So what is the problem? Did robot screw up the newsletter list or is there some sort of cycle going on? (first one with fresh ibles then one with old ones some people may not have found yet). I think you guys do great work keeping this site up and running and dealing with our problems so to make things clear this isn't hostile or anything. I was just wondering why you suddenly send a newsletter with old ibles when there are so many new good ones?

Creative Commons Salon: We Love to Share At Creative Commons, we love to share. And while CC is primarily known for its work enabling openness and collaboration in the digital world, we're interested in how the culture of sharing is changing offline life as well. Join us at the next CC Salon in San Francisco, where we'll present three projects focused on how sharing ideas, knowledge, and even physical space can revolutionize the way people create, work, and play. The evening's presenters are Jack Herrick, founder of the collaborative how-to manual wikiHow; Clément Alteresco, COO of innovation/strategic development agency faberNovel, which founded collaborative workspace pariSoma; and Neal Gorenflo, founder of Shareable, a new magazine and online community dedicated to sharing. Date & Time • Tuesday, July 6, 2010 • 7:00-9:00 PM • $5-10 suggested donation (no one turned away) • Beverages provided • Plenty of street parking available • pariSoma is located up two steep flights of stairs, and unfortunately does not have wheelchair access at this time pariSoma Innovation Loft

Facebook "Like" banner and firewall blocking -- backed out

UPDATE 5/4/2010: It looks like the new banner has been backed out. The original "orange box" with JavaScript drivers to FB, Twitter, etc. is back in place. UPDATE:  Kiteman has reported that the new Facebook "Like" banner has an even worse effect for some users.  With some filtering software, the transitive link through I'bles to Facebook causes the entire Instructables site itself to be blocked out (i.e., the filter is preventing pass-through access), and may also shut down the browser completely (the way China was blocking Google). That means any of our users who, at school or at work, are behind that style of filter are completely blocked from accessing Instructables, and have no way of letting us know about this.  In my opinion, that is too high a price to pay for the supposed benefit of cross-linking to a social network. (Note: I'm putting this in Help:Bugs because I consider it a broken or inappropriate result of a newly deployed feature.)   Shortly after I posted my Feedback topic about the new Like button, user LoneWolf commented that he did not see what I was talking about.  All he got was a large blue banner saying ACCESS DENIED!  RavingMadStudios figured out that this is because he's viewing Instructables from behind a firewall where Facebook (and presumably other sites) are blocked. Now, I am a little perturbed that you guys are forcing my computer access stuff from Facebook, which opens me up to all the usual nasty harvesting that I have tried to avoid by never ever using Facebook. But that's not the point of this posting. I think the giant ACCESS DENIED! banner detracts from the site's image, and can also be misleading to users. If someone sees that on an I'ble, does it mean that they aren't allowed to look at any of the Steps? They're not allowed to print it out? What's going on here? Do you think your new programmer might be able to cook up a little bit of JavaScript, to run on the client side, which could tell whether Facebook is accessible or not? If it is not, the script would simply put nothing where the Like button is now. If it is accessible, then business as usual.

Valley View Park Update 1

Here's the first update of Valley View Park. Please see the first forum before seeing this one.                                                         June 2010 The park has undergone several changes during the last few months. First of all the main street has been redone with a brick paving as seen in pictures 1 and 2. Peeps seem to like this change as it gives the main street a more "main" feel to it. Blackbeard's voyage has continued to attract a lot of guests as seen in pic 3. The Castle surrounding it gives the peeps a ride to remember. Pic 4 shows the viewing tower which has started to be demolished as not many people have visited the tower. Mr. Fredrickson says that the park will replace the tower with another ride. As we can see in pic 5 Inversion Spinner continues to attract a large amount of peeps due to the intensity of the ride. It has become the most popular ride in the park. Python is also very popular although we can see in pic 6 that a new sign has been put up. It says to wait for the previous person to arrive at the bottom of the slide before you go down. This has been put up because of some accidents that have happened. In the next pic(7) we can see a new ride that has apparently replaced twister as it was not very popular. In pic 8 we can see a large amount of peeps going to the new ride. Pic 9 shows the entrance to the new ride DESTRUCTION. Pic 10 shows that it is a revolution ride that has replaced twister. The new ride attracts much more people than the previous ride. In pic 11 we can see that the park has been able to buy some new land. The barren field was bought but the owner has not revealed what he plans to use it for. This new property has elarged the park. In pic 12 we see that junior wheel has been practically deserted. It would not be a surprise to see this ride demolished. Pic 13 shows an overview of the park. The future of this park lies in the hands of Mr. Fredrickson.

Valley View Park Update 3

September 2010 Hello again! The past couple of months have been full of activity. We'll start of by showing you what we saw on our way here. As you can see in pic 1 there's a truck bringing supports of some kind. We were eager to get into the park and see what was going on. While we were walking down the main street we encountered the park inspector who was too busy to answer any questions. As you can see in the second picture the park is still attracting a large crowd. We got to Destruction and guess what we saw. The park has got a construction crew which has brought track and supports! As you can see in pic 3 it looks like Valley View Park is getting it's first coaster! We still do not know what style it will be but we do know that it won't be a wooden one. We asked several park guests what they thought about the new coaster. Here are some of the replies we received. "When I saw the coaster construction I jumped with joy. I've been up to the theme parks in Gold Coast and they were awesome and it's good to know that New South Wales is receiving a good theme park."  Another reply was "Oh boy! Valley View's getting a coaster! I can't wait to see what the park will present to us."  As you can see the guests are eager to see what this will turn into. A you can see in pic 4 we walked past the new food stall and it looks like the vendor is still camera shy. We also found the new Lemonade stall which can be seen in pic 5. This vendor is one of the happiest vendors in the park and he loves cup stacking. His name is Walter Doogle. He make the best lemonade we've ever had. After a ride on Destruction we went to ride the Inversion Spinner. You can see that the queue is still large in pic 6. There have been rumors of a new name to be given to Inversion Spinner. We don't know if the rumors are true but we will definitely investigate the matter. Before leaving we rode on the rest of the rides. We hope that you enjoyed this update of Valley View Park. Stay tuned to see what the park's future will be.

Valley View Park Update 2

Second Update! Sorry it took so long. I had a lot of stuff to do.                                                                     August 2010 Hello Everyone! It's time to take another look at Valley View Park. The park has definitely received a generous income which has allowed the park to do many things. The park has been able to completely demolish the tower and they have replaced with a ride which wee will declare later on. An overview of the park can be seen in pic 1. As wee entered the park we headed straight to the gardens for a little rest after the drive. After we left we noticed that a part of the brick paving changed colour which can be seen in pic 2. We asked some of the staff and the park has apparently had some vandalism acts which the park has had to take care of. Mr. Fredrickson says that if it gets worse he'll call the police to find the vandals. Moving on we went straight to the new attraction. It is apparently a bumper car ride which can be seen in pic 3. The crew really liked the colours of the ride. In pic 4 we can see that they named it Dodgems. After a some fun crashes we went to catch a ride on Destruction. The ride has definitely maintained it's popularity and the manager is probably going to expand the queue line. The queue can be seen in pic 5. From the queue you can see a new food stall in pic 6. The vendor seems to be shy as he ducked under his counter as people went past. In pic 7 we can see that the area behind Destruction hasn't received a ride yet. However, The manager assures us that the ride will be built by March next year. Mr. Fredrickson has been receiving comments about some rocks that fell from the cliff in the car park which can be seen in pic 8. The manager has started to put aside money to fix this problem. In the last picture we can see the car park which is always crowded. The Manager will also be saving money to expand the car park. As we can see the future of this park seems to be in good hands. We are eager to find out what the new ride will be. The staff were talking about an announcement in a couple months that we managed to hear. We will talk about that in the next update. Stay tuned!

Paper Airplane Contest (Closed)

In hopes of seeing more paper airplanes and innovative designers on Instructables.com, I have decided to host a mini-contest. My goal is to stimulate the paper airplane channel and encourage more paper airplane builders to post their innovative designs.  Performance Requirements: Entered paper airplanes must meet or exceed these requirements: Stability at all operation speeds A minimum range of 30 feet Durability to fly 30 feet or more after 15 flights Use of less than 15 pieces of tape in construction Use of less than 5 pieces of 8.5 by 11 inch (A4) paper in construction Prizes: For this contest I will award the publishers of the top 3 paper airplanes* one patch each. By default, these patches will be medals (1st place, Patch with Gold Medal image; 2nd Place, Patch with Silver Medal image; 3rd Place, Patch with Bronze Medal Image). If the winners of the patches would like a different image, there will be a 24 hour period between the announcement of the winners and the awarding of the patches. During this time, the user would need to send me a private message with their desired picture. *Multiple entries are allowed. To keep the distribution of patches wide, each entrant can only win one prize. How To Enter: To enter this contest, you must send me a private message with your instructable's URL included. I will then put the link and author's name onto a list on this topic as "Entries". Judging: For this contest, I have decided that I will judge all the planes myself based on abilities. I have decided this way because I believe judging on performance rather than shape is a more objective approach. The contest begins Friday, December 10, 2010 and end Monday, January 10, 2011. Entries must be published before Tuesday, January 4, 2011. From January 4 to January 10, I will be judging all entries. I will announce the winners of the contest on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 and issue them their prizes Wednesday, January 12, 2011. Entries:   wat.: "Hammerhead Glider" (https://www.instructables.com/id/Hammerhead-Glider/) legoman111: "Blizzard" (https://www.instructables.com/id/the-blizzard-paper-airplane/)

Virus Problem **Updated Topic - 1/12/2010**

This is the official forum post for the virus problems some users are experiencing with our ad networks.  From now on please post all virus reports here. One or more of the ad networks that serve advertisements on the site has been loading ads that are infected with a virus.  We have been monitoring the situation for almost two weeks now, working with users to identify the infected networks, and then shutting them down from our ad rotation. Despite our best efforts, the Instructables Staff has not been able to reproduce the problem locally, either because the viruses are appearing in only certain geographic areas, or because we work on Macs.  As a result, we've been relying on users to help us identify the problem and target the infected ad networks.  Please understand that we are not serving these ads intentionally, nor is there a virus on Instructables directly, or our servers, and that we are doing everything possible to shut down the suspected ad networks that are causing this problem.  Here's what we know so far The virus appears to be what Microsoft calls a Rogue Antivirus.  It basically tricks users into thinking that their computer is infected with a virus, when their machines are in fact just fine.  A fake virus scan window alerts users that their computer is infected.  Once alerted with this news, users are misleadingly encouraged to install malicious software on their machine.  The alerts seem to pop up after users are redirected away from Instructables, sometimes immediately after loading a page on the site, or in some reports, just from users dragging their mouse over the ad spot.  The problem appears to have only effected a very small percentage of our users, as hundreds of thousands of people visit the site each day and only a few dozen reports have come in over the last two weeks. What to do Don't click on any links that instruct you to install software onto your machine.  Update the definitions for your virus program and install the latest updates for your operating system.  If you should experience any of these redirects or virus screens, please read the section below about how you can help us, and post your information to this forum topic. How you can help If you see a pop-up warning you that you are infected, or if you are redirected away from Instructables and onto another page that triggers a virus alert, take a screen shot (command + shift + 3 in mac; print screen button in windows) close the page down, and then come to this forum topic and post as much as you can describing what you were doing before the problem happened, what happened when the virus attacked, and what you did to fix the problem. Please include the following details with your post if possible - the following information is necessary for us to identify which ad network the virus is coming from: any ads serving on the page that you remember description of malware the URL of the page on Instructables you were viewing direct URLs of malware screenshots city, state and or country you are located in what operating system and browser you are using If you have Firebug installed, you can use it to inspect the problem pages and gather even more information which you can post to this topic. Previous forum topics about this problem include "Ad-Problem",  "Virus on Instructables" and "instant start virus alter programme".  While these forum topics are still useful in identifying the problem, we need to congregate all new reports here with the bulleted information above so we can gather the necessary facts to pass along to the ad networks to start attacking this problem as aggressively as we can. I've aggregated offline screen shots, emails, and other useful comments below that contain useful clues to get the ball rolling. Please accept our deepest apologies for this unacceptable frustration and continue to work with us so we can completely eliminate this virus problem our ad networks. ****1/12/2010 Update**** There's reason to believe that the virus could have infected your browsers cache, and thus be re-infecting your computer from there.  As per the instructions given in the New York Times Article "What to do if you saw an antivirus pop up ad" please follow the steps below before posting any new virus reports on this forum thread so we can be sure that your computer is not repeatedly infecting itself regardless of the state of the site. 1) Close the screen 2) Clear your browsers cache (directions here) 3) Scan computer with a legitimate anti virus software 4) Run any and all updates to your operating system If you are then still seeing warning messages and pop ups about the malware, then please do let us know so we can continue to track and fight this problem. We've shut down all of our ad networks that aren't absolutely essential to the running of the site and are working with the last two remaining networks to troubleshoot this problem.  All data shows that the ad networks are responsible for the virus attacks that many sites have been experiencing around the web recently (this is not just a problem on Instructables ), and we've got to take the fight to them to effectively stop the attacks.

Chinese Spies Hack Gmail Accounts: Google Gets Angry

Google Threatens To Quit China Over 'Spies' 10:05am UK, Wednesday January 13, 2010 Peter Sharp, China correspondent Google has threatened to pull its operation out of China, claiming cyber spies have penetrated the system. The internet giant said "highly sophisticated" attacks had been launched to hack into e-mail accounts of human rights activists in China and around the world. "These attacks and the surveillance they have uncovered - combined with the attempts over the past year to further limit free speech on the web - have led us to conclude that we should review the feasibility of our business operations in China," Google chief legal officer David Drummond said in a blog post. Chinese authorities said they were "seeking more information on Google's statement that it could quit China", the official Xinhua news agency said, citing a government official. The unnamed official from China's State Council Information Office also said: "It is still hard to say whether Google will quit China or not. Nobody knows." Google's threat came after it announced it would no longer censor search results in China. Searches on google.cn for the iconic photo of a man standing in front of a line of tanks in Tiananmen Square in 1989 found the image immediately, as well as results for other sensitive topics such as the Dalai Lama and the banned Falungong spiritual group. No company should be forced to operate under government threat to its core values or to the rights and safety of its users. Leslie Harris, of the Centre for Democracy & Technology Google said 20 other companies had been targeted including media, finance, chemical and technology sites. "Google has taken a bold and difficult step for internet freedom in support of fundamental human rights," said Leslie Harris, president of the US-based Centre for Democracy & Technology. "No company should be forced to operate under government threat to its core values or to the rights and safety of its users." At Google's offices in Beijing, human rights activists laid a bouquet of red roses and white lilies in support of the company. "We want to express outrage, but not at Google. Coming here is a type of support for Google," said IT worker Zhao Gang. "Google faces very strict and adverse conditions in China. Something we knew in our hearts is now out in the open. I believe it's a watershed moment for the internet in China this year." Google stressed that the decision to review its controversial operations in China had been taken by the company's US executives and not by staff in China.   For some, it seems to be too little, too late considering the strict censorship the Chinese government enforces.  However, by playing by the rules, Google was able to get its foot in the door and now has some potential leverage.

Valley View Park Update 4

November 2010 Hello Everybody! We decided to visit valley View Park a couple days ago and boy did we get a surprise. The amount of construction has rocketed sky high in the last two months. we'll start with some pics of the car park. As you can see in the 1st picture the park has begun to make space for an expanded car park as there wasn't much room in the old one. The new car park is just across the road. As you can see in pic 2 the old car park has been asphalted except for a few spaces. All these cars are owned by workers or management. As we got closer to the park we saw the closed sign as seen in pic 3. The reason of this was unknown but we we're determined to find out. Behind the entrance we can see a sign. In pic 4 we can see that it's a logo for the park. It's a scenic picture of trees with Valley View Park written in red. We we're allowed in and went to see the garden. It seems the janitors have to come to the park every now and then to water the plants as can be seen in pic 5. we decided to go see How the rides are going. We asked the man in pic 6 about the new name for Inversion Spinner and we received more information than was expected. Apparently Inversion Spinner will be given a new name, a new colour and it will be relocated.. What is going to replace it is still a mystery but we will do our best to find our. There will be nothing done to Dodgems which can be seen in pic 7. No work has been done on Python or Ferris Wheel as seen in pics 8 and 9 We ran into Mr. Fredrickson before going to see destruction. He stopped us from looking at the construction while we took a picture of Destruction. Pic 10. Mr Fredrickson then let us see what has happened at the construction site. We couldn't believe our eyes. We looked up and saw the start of an inverted coaster! Pic 11. Mr. Fredrickson told us that he was able to contact the popular B&M; company from Switzerland to build a coaster in Valley View park. This makes the coaster the first B&M; in Australia. In pic 12 we can see that there are some fences to stop people from falling out. The first drop looms over the path to Destruction. Pic 13.From the Queue line of Destruction we can see the station of the new coaster. Pic 14. We asked Mr. Frederickson what the name of the coaster will be but he kept that a secret. Form the top of the castle of Blackbeard's voyage we can see the whole coaster so far. As we can see in pic 15 the first hill has been built. It has not been confirmed if there will be any inversions but It will still be exciting nonetheless. In pic 16 we can see the crane working with the track pieces. Mr. Fredrickson said that the park will be closed during Summer break. He hopes the park can receive enough money after Summer Break to maintain the park. He is taking a major risk in this action and he is hoping that the new roller coaster will earn enough profit. Unfortunately we will not be able to talk about Valley View Park until the end of Summer Break. Goodbye everyone. Stay tuned.

"Bug" - Issue with image importer converting .PNG files to .JPEG

Update: posting this topic further illustrated that something weird is happening with how Instructables handles images. The image as shown above shows both left and right sides with the text blurry. If you click on the image, the left stays blurry (as it should because it was) whereas the text on the right shows clear and sharp. I give up on the root of the problem, but it's frustrating how the image quality gets messed up.I put "bug" in quotations since you never know if it's a bug, unintended side effect, technical limitation or external problem. I'll let Instructables be the judge. Regardless, I thought it might be worth bringing attention to since I'm probably not the only one to have experienced it.While I use RAW images converted to JPEGs in Lightroom for my main project images, which tend to look beautifully, I normally use Canva to design my title images. Mainly due to being able to add text, shapes or any other elements in layers. Canva exports by default in .PNG format, which is probably the most popular image format after .JPG due to its support of transparencies and lossless compression. For that reason it's normally preferred for header images and graphics. I tend to use a ratio of between 4:3 and 16:9 to make things easier for the file uploader, as well as a longest edge of 1024px since that looks like it's what Instructables wants so it won't be resized. Despite trying to make things easy for the uploader, my title images have always been the blurriest, noticeably more so than the rest of the images or the image uploaded. Today I finally did some tests and found out that on import of .PNG files, the uploader noticeably deteriorates the quality of the image when converting it to JPEG, even if it isn't resizing it. A picture is attached as evidence. It seems to particularly affect portions which are highly saturated or text, greatly desharpening it. It makes a good image look like it's been carelessly edited. For the image to maintain its quality, I have to take the original .PNG and convert to .JPEG on my own (Photoshop), and then upload the .JPEG to Instructables (instead of the .PNG). As a user, what I'd optimally like to see done is: Fix the importer to properly support .PNG images without deteriorating the images. It is way too popular a format to not accept. I do realize it might be a Canva color space or other such issue, but it probably wouldn't be limited to that program anyway. Nonetheless, if this isn't possible, I'd be happy for the system to simply not accept .PNG and to throw-out an error message telling me to convert the images on my own and only upload .JPG. That would at least avoid image quality being inadvertently affected. Make available an up to date FAQ page where all information regarding images is available: what formats are natively accepted, what is the optimal ratio for images, what is the optimal resolution for images, to what sizes an image is resized on import, or any other relevant technical image details. I've researched this multiple times in the past and there are a lot of people with the same questions in the forum. Especially when it comes to sizes and ratios (cut off images, etc). Most of the information is from years ago (ex. 2010) and cannot be trusted to be up to date. Up to now I've uploaded plenty of 18 megapixel images when it is unnecessary given that the largest size shown, I think, is "LARGE" size at 1024px (I believe). A place to educate ourselves objectively on this particular site's preferences would be appreciated.Anyway, thought I'd comment this since it was a relief to finally find out the origin of the problem.

The Instructables Rating System

As you have all noticed, Instructables has recently implemented a new rating system, based on stars (insert 2001 A Space Odyssey joke here). We've done a bit of experimenting -- and reserve the right to do more in future -- but it's stable for now so here's how it works. UPDATE 2010-09-24: The below calculation has been tweaked to bring Instructables' ratings closer to the level of ratings of comparable content on the Internet generally.  We found that we run about a star low, based on a rough look at a bunch of other sites and our (totally unbiased of course!) estimates of their content quality.  So, we have added a star to all ratings across the board.  It's like grade inflation... but we know our users put up really good stuff and we want that to be recognized. UPDATE: we've tweaked the system a bit more. The below describes the rating system as of 2008-11-15. The rating system uses a weighted average, where Instructables with only a few ratings, or ratings by users who have not rated many Instructables, have a total closer to the middle of the star range than the actual average of the ratings. For example, an Instructable with one five-star rating will have a total closer to 4 than to 5, because there are so few ratings on it. If the user who rated it hasn't rated other Instructables, the total will be lower than if the user who rated it has done a lot of rating in the past. The purpose of this difference is to minimize the effect of 'shill' ratings; we've seen some members attempt to bump their ratings by creating fake accounts just to rate up an Instructable or two! As more people rate each Instructable, the total becomes closer and closer to the true average of the ratings. And as each user rates more and more Instructables, we weight their rating higher and higher. We have done it this way because we want the rating to reflect the opinion of the whole community, and we believe that members who do a lot of rating have been around enough to have a good sense of what makes a good Instructable. Also, members who comment and rate have their rating counted higher, as the comment indicates a higher level of involvement with the Instructable than rating alone. This method makes it so a less-than-stellar Instructable can't be pushed to the very top of the ratings because the author got their friends to sign up and rate it at 5 stars; similarly a really good Instructable can't be dragged too far down by a malicious user. For the mathy amongst you, this is the formula (we changed the way one component is calculated): (siteAvgNumRates * siteAvgRating) + (numRates(ible) * avgRating(ible)) R(ible) = ---------------------------------------------------------------------- siteAvgNumRates + numRates(ible) The avgRating(ible) is no longer a straight average, but a weighted one. It's calculated like this: (W1*R1 + W2*R2 + ... + Wx*Rx) + 2(V1*C1 +V2* C2 + ... + Vy*Cy) -------------------------------------------------------------- (W1 + W2 + ... + Wx) + 2(V1 + V2 + ... + Vy) Pretty complicated algebra, huh? W and V are both weight values, between 0 and 1. R is the rating of someone who has not commented, and C is the rating of someone who has commented. siteAvgNumRates and siteAvgRating are estimates, held constant in the pursuit of not having ALL ratings change every time one person rates one Instructable. As you can see, when the number of ratings for a particular Instructable is low, the weight of the site averages count for much more of the rating value. When the rating count is high, the site averages are only a small part of the total rating value. We believe this algorithm has a good balance between letting the cream rise to the top, and preventing 'rating spam' to coin a term. Please comment!

Bp holdings, BP styrelsen godkänner Rosneft Deal - slideserve

Design Changes on Instructables

As you've noticed, we've been making some design changes to Instructables.  We're trying to accomplish a number of things including making it easier to find content you're interested in, creating more compelling products for advertisers, and supporting and growing what we've already built.  Here, I'll share the details around some specific design changes. One of my big goals for 2010 is to increase our direct visitors.  A direct visitor might type our URL into their browser, click on a link in a newsletter, come to the site from one of their bookmarks, or search for a phrase that includes "Instructables".  Other types of visitors include searchers, who come to the site from phrases such as "sweet potato fries" but aren't specifically trying to reach Instructables.com, and visitors from blogs or news portals.  My thesis is that more and more brand advertisers will want to reach our true community, and not people who are just passing by.  A pretty good proxy for our true community is direct visitors, and we've already seen the savviest advertisers try to reach only that community by advertising exclusively on our homepage (the recent Apple campaigns, for example).  To grow our business and ensure that Instructables thrives, it's important that we have great opportunities for advertisers, and a stronger community means more great Instructables and more intelligent people seeing and commenting on your Instructables. To this end, we've been working to increase the likelihood that someone will go deeper into our content, and remember to come back in the future.  Said another way, we want that sweet potato fries Google search to introduce someone to Instructables, and then have them think, "wow this site is amazing, I'll bookmark it, sign up for the newsletter, come back, etc..."  Some of the most dramatic changes are on the homepage and channel homepages.   On the homepage, we've removed the intro text from the links to Instructables.  By making the homepage less cluttered with words, I was hoping to increase the number of people clicking on an Instructable.  Also, I felt that the beginning of the intro text didn't contribute much to my understanding of the Instructable, and often it was no more than a repetition of the title (and at worse a note about how it was someone's first...).  Removing text to increase engagement might seem counter-intuitive, but with too much going on, visitors sometimes just leave rather than decide what to click on.  So far, clicks from the homepage are flat or slightly up, so this change hasn't had a negative effect on deepening visits, and may over time move us in a positive direction.  On the channel homepages, we've drastically changed the layout to be more blog-like.  My theory here was to give people a format they were more familiar with from elsewhere on the web, and results have been dramatic.  The exit-rates (the percentage of visitors that leave Instructables from a particular page) on our channel homepages have been cut in half.  For example, the exit-rate on the home channel homepage has dropped from 12% to 4.5%.  This is really good!  To me, this indicates that on the channel homepages we're giving visitors more compelling content, and they are more likely to dig into that content. In support of our efforts to deepen visits, we've been doing similar smaller changes all over the site. Most of these are based on our traffic and click analysis, and if my theories are wrong, we change back or try something else.  One particular change that has generated concern is the removal of the Answers link from the header.  This has nothing to do with our support of Answers in general -- it's based on data.  That link was almost completely unused.  Coming again from the perspective of making a slightly cleaner look, we removed it.  As the link wasn't generating any clicks, traffic to Answers has been unaffected.  In fact, as we're highlighting specific answers on the channel homepages, traffic to the Answers section is actually up 7% since we removed the link:  from Feb. 1 - 18 answers did an average of 11.1 K pageviews per day; from Feb. 19 - 28 it's done 11.9 K pageviews per day.  Perhaps that's noise in the data, but removing the link certainly hasn't been the end of answers, and the trend since the change is positive. So, we do rearrange the furniture from time to time, but it's never without reason.  We're always trying to make Instructables better.  We've messed up in the past, and we'll surely mess up in the future; but I think this is good, because if we're not reaching and striving a little bit beyond our comfort zone, we're not learning and improving.

Total Views Tracker - 06/01/2011

Here's this week's run of total views. Sorry I missed the last two runs over Christmas, was too busy having fun and didn't have the script with me where I was. We have LOTS of new members since the last time I ran it, about 40 more I think! And lots more in the high totals, Fungus Amungus  and Randofo have joined the group so next week we'll be able to see if they're gaining on Canida and whether Fungus is getting enough weekly views to stay ahead of Scoochmaroo. iPad Problems - 14 Problems with Apple's iPad

Apple just revealed the new Apple iPad Tablet that will probably make it one of the first failures by Apple's latest line of products. Apple revealed this new Tablet PC as a challenger to netbooks. However, it's already been labeled a "less powerful, but more expensive netbook." Here are 14 iPad problems that made this Apple iPad an iDisappointment. 1. No Multitasking The Apple iPad is just like the iPhone, in that there is no multitasking. You can't work on a document and talk on AIM or Gtalk. In other words, the iPad just a giant iPod Touch (the iPod Touch being better) and cannot match netbooks. 2. It Has an Awkward Design The design is a bit awkward because you have to hold it in one hand and balance it while your other hand uses the functionality or more likely you will need to put it on your knees to use it properly. It's like holding a monitor, I'm sure nothing will happen to it. Some people complain about the Bezel being too large, but perhaps this was necessary so that you don't constantly give commands while moving around. 3. No Adobe Flash Were you considering watching Hulu on this? How about youtube (well we'll have to wait for an app for that)? Thinking of playing flash games while waiting on the bus? Oh well. 4. No USB, Need Adapters Again with the iPod design, you need to plug in the special Apple adapter. If you lose it, you'll have to buy another. If you want to plug in multiple devices you need USB to iPad adapters! Since it's not even using Mac OS, most USB devices would probably not work anyway. 5. AT&T; Once Again Are you thinking of purchasing the 3G version? You'll need to get it with AT&T; and think of how overloaded their service will be now. There is no Verizon, T-Mobile, or Sprint service available for this product, some of which has better coverage. You can't use T-Mobile's 3G at all because of their MicroSIM made specifically for AT&T.; 6. Memory Business Model Apple will charge you extra for higher memory. It's a business model they use for all their products to increase profits. That's why they don't want other storage devices being inserted to improve memory. You're also stuck with a limit of 64GB, so don't think about putting in all your music, movies, or games. 7. Touch Keyboard Many people were complaining about the touchscreen keyboard. Which would be fine if it worked perfectly and you didn't have to sit it exactly on your lap and make sure it's flat. You can however, attach an Apple keyboard, just another way for Apple to make money. 8. App Store Again Just like the iPod Touch you have to download everything from an App store. Meaning if you don't like Safari, you're stuck with it. Some apps may be banned once again. 9. No Cameras Yeah no web cams on the front, and no cameras for photos or videos from the back either. 10. No Removable Battery You can't just take an extra battery with you on a long trip because the battery works the same way as an iPod (though my bet is, it doesn't last as long). 11. No HDMI/DVI Output You can't plug this thing into your TV to display your HD movies. You'd need AppleTV for that. 12. No Widescreen 16:9 ain't happening, you're stuck with a 4:3 screen. 13. No GPS There's no GPS, so --unlike the T-Mobile MyTouch or the Verizon Droid which both run on Android, can multitask and have GPS so that you can use the Beta Google Maps Navigation system for turn-by-turn directions-- you're stuck with locating yourself via WiFi hotspots. 14. It's Large, Slow, and Clunky Not only will you have to buy accessories to protect your device, it's very large making it easy to drop and probably won't live a healthy life in a backpack filled with notebooks and other possibly sharp objects. There may be a number of accessories sold by Apple to cover some of these problems. The iPad max speed is 1GHz (A4 processor) and will probably be just as slow surfing the web as most other smartphones and it won't match up to netbooks. There is no Mac OS X or anything either, it's definitely the iPhone OS except without the Phone capability and of course I'm sure they will ban Google Voice and Skype. The iPad is about the size of a Kindle, so it is nice for reading e-books I suppose, but then I'm not sure why I wouldn't just buy a Kindle. As with all companies that initially have much success, they get a little overconfident and launch a product just to create more hype and increase their stock prices.   More related iPad Problem resources: ipad wiki - What you need to know about iPad The iPad is a tablet computer developed by Apple Inc. Announced on January 27, 2010, it is similar in functionality to the iPhone and iPod touch, running the same operating system (iPhone OS) and almost all of the same applications...

The worst time of my life

If three years ago somebody had told me that I would be at Maker Faire, using my cyborg arms, watching Arc Attack playing the “Doctor Who” theme, and meeting Adam Savage from “Mythbusters”, I would have said that person is crazy or is mocking me. But I was there. With Instructables. It was awesome when Adam Savage, in the middle of his conference, yelled to me “Hey man! Nice borg!!”. “OH MY GOD!” I thought, “ADAM SAVAGE FROM THE MYTHBUSTERS TOLD ME I MADE A NICE BORG!!” But, beyond Adam Savage, the giant robots, the fire and electricity shows, the beautiful steampunk women, the good energy, the delicious food and the pictures with Daleks; the most beautiful, shocking, awesome and magical moment of the Maker Faire 2013 was when I had just arrived at the Autodesk booth. I saw the giant map of DIYers from around the world, and I realized my picture and profile were representing Colombia and I was one of the three leading makers of South America. I was paralyzed remembering all this journey, from being a complete loser without a future to that point in time and space when I felt absolutely happy, calm, and at peace with myself. It was worth it to keep fighting, just for that sublime moment. I felt like a Rock Star. Not because I was, but because Instructables and Autodesk made me feel like one. ……………………………………… When people ask me “Why do you love Instructables?” my answers are always the same: because the site is awesome, has amazing projects and great contests with cool prizes; because Instructables is the only one who has supported my DIY activities, especially in my country (Colombia) where science and technology aren’t priorities, and so on. But I never gave the complete answer. And now, after these fantastic five months as Artist in Residence, I want to tell the truth: I love Instructables because they were with me in the worst time of my life. ……………………………………… In 2009, I lost my job as Security Analyst in an important Colombian company. I thought I could subsist thanks to my junk projects and creating my own business, but almost nobody was interested on buying recycled crafts (besides, I wasn’t as good then as I am today.) And the only interested people wanted my works for free. It was not enough for a living, so after a few months I started looking for a job. Due to its economic situation, Colombia has high rates of unemployment and it’s very hard to find a job, and there’s no government subsidy for unemployed workers (sorry Colombia! One day, I will talk about all your beautiful and fantastic things, because you have a lot. But not today). Besides, when you are a former military officer the only civilian jobs you can apply for are in security because nobody thinks you can be creative; and if you are, nobody takes you seriously. Every two weeks I had an interview. Every interview ended with just another “we will call you.” It’s time to confess something to the world: at the same time, I was diagnosed with mild Borderline Personality Disorder and depression. It’s not something that “SHAZAM! You are nuts!”. No. I knew from years ago there was something wrong about me, but just in that moment I found out what I have. Just in case you ask: no, this condition doesn’t make me a bad employee, and I’m very competent in my work. No, I’m not some kind of evil psycho. Just a little bit creepy sometimes, but I always try my best to be a good person. And no, I’m not trying to look like a “dark and bizarre, Tim Burton style” character just because I want to look interesting. It may work for an artist or a teenager, but not for somebody trying to get a job in the security business or a stable relationship. I didn’t have any health insurance; I didn’t have money for any treatment and, in case I could afford it, there is a social stigma about persons with some kind of mental disorder, and no company would be interested in hiring a security manager with that kind of problem. So, I had to keep it to myself. I didn’t even tell it to my family. And my girlfriend broke up with me. So, my life was “complete.” I was without a job, love and almost without my sanity. Almost all of my “friends” were gone. I was drowning in debts. I didn’t have money even for basic things. I had to return to my mother’s house. I lost every goal, every dream, and every hope. The situation was so desperate that I seriously thought about giving up. But only two things stopped me from doing that. One was Carolina, the only friend I had in that moment. The other thing was Instructables. ……………………………………… I found the site several months after because I was looking for simple robots ideas. Then, I saw Instructables has contests, and I entered my first project (the “SPD Exoskeleton”) for the 2009 Halloween Contest. A lot of people made awesome comments about my project, and I received my first prize: the “Photojojo!” book and a Robot T-Shirt. “What? I just post pictures of my project on an internet site and they give me free stuff? Interesting!” Then, I made another project, the “Valentine’s RoboGrinch”. I was a finalist in the 2010 Valentine’s Day Contest. People around the world commented about my ideas, and my projects started to become popular being featured in other sites and blogs around the planet. When I got the First Prize on the Dead Computer Contest, I gave to my mother the netbook I won. It was the only present I could afford to give her in a long time. In my darkest moments, when I thought about giving up, I remembered I had some project on Instructables I didn’t finish or publish, and then I keep fighting just one or two days more, because I didn’t want to leave it uncompleted. When I finished it, I endured one week more, just for knowing if it was successful in a contest. Sometimes I won. Sometimes I lost. When I could get some money, I used it for buying tools or materials for the projects, instead of food or paying debts. Because I started to think that every project, every idea I was making, every instructable I was writing, was my little legacy to humanity. Probably one day I will die, but at least in some part of the Internet, it would be a proof that I made something good, something that could be appreciated by anybody, and my life was not in vain. And I started to win more contests. It felt good, because I thought “I’m a loser, but this loser is kicking butts!” With so many fantastic authors, the competition got tougher, so I had to improve my skills (and my English. Instructables was the only opportunity I had to improve and practice this language.) I became very good at making stuff with plastic trash and limited resources! Besides, without knowing anything about me and my personal situation, even without being on the same country, the Instructables staff and community were (and are) very special and kind with me. They always made me feel respected and loved. Instructables was the only escape I had from my reality. This site has thousands of users and still they had the time to talk to me, to care for me, to make me feel like part of a bunch of friends! They were the only people that didn’t see me or treat me like a loser or somebody who needed to be pitied. They were the only ones that made me feel I wasn’t completely alone on this planet. All of this situation lasted one year and two months. Instructables kept me fighting almost all of that time. ……………………………………… Finally, in September of 2010, I got a job. It wasn’t the best (honestly, it was horrible!), but at least I was working. Four months later, I got a better job as security manager of a business center, enough to start paying debts. On October 2010, I went to the Colombian equivalent of Comic-Con, using the Cyborg suit I built for the Instructables’ Dead Computer Contest. Thanks to this, a beautiful woman found me out of the crowd, because she loves robots. She became my biggest fan and we shared a big love. I never thought I could find a love like that. She was the girlfriend I got thanks to Instructables! She was the inspiration of my “Cyborg Heart in a Can”. And I gave it to her. And then Instructables interviewed me as Featured Author. I would be the first Colombian to be a Featured Author! That was awesome! In total, I have won twelve Instructables contests and two challenges. Thanks to Instructables, people of all the world know about my cyborgs and my Roboplanters. (The funny thing is I’m still feeling like the black sheep of the family!) ……………………………………… It was 2012. After one and a half year of relationship, my girlfriend and I broke up, for good (our respective problems were stronger than our love.) Besides, I was stuck at work and I couldn’t study something art or robotics related because the restrictive schedule of my job. So, the depression was returning… I was lying on the couch watching “Doctor Who” when a phrase get stuck in my mind: “All of time and space. Everywhere and anywhere. Every star that ever was. Where do you want to start?” And then I realized that nothing was tying me to Colombia and I could apply to the Instructables Artist in Residence Program. I wanted to know, at least for a few months, how it was to be in the most awesome company in this world. So I quit my job, I sold most of my belongings, I packed my Dremel, my trench coat and my sonic screwdriver, I said goodbye to my family and I traveled to San Francisco on February 27th of 2013. I didn’t come for the “American Dream”. I came for the “Instructables Dream”! ……………………………………… What can I say? How can I describe the most fantastic experience of my life, using just a few words? How can I summarize five months of happiness, learnings, DIY and good energy, when every day was an amazing adventure? I felt, after 35 years of life, I finally arrived in the place I belong. I met the faces behind the site I love and admire. You know who they are (sorry for breaking the magic but, please! Update the Instructables Team page! A lot of awesome people are not there!) I’m trying to not mention specific persons, because I shared awesome experiences with each one of you. Every one of you taught me something, every one of you made me feel appreciated, every one of you does a fantastic job keeping this site working. And I want nobody feels excluded of this post (Sherry always fights for sending out prizes on time, silently. Why nobody says “Thanks Sherry?”) Because Instructables is more than servers and computers and projects and internet. Instructables is the people. From the beginning, Instructables and the Autodesk Consumer Group made me feel like one of the team, like part of something bigger than myself. The Pizza Thursdays, the Marvelous Mondays, the Build Days, the Design Nights, became magical events for me. But it wasn’t only Instructables and Autodesk. This beautiful city of San Francisco taught me real lessons about tolerance, respect and being yourself. It doesn’t matter if you are radically different to the other people. Just be a nice person, do your job and respect the others, and everyone will respect you. I had never touched a CAD software, because I didn’t see any possible use for it in my life. And I thought it was something so complicated that only engineers and designers could use that kind of program. But then I went from 0 to 123D Design! I learned the basics in just two days and I fell in love with this awesome program, and it’s free! (But, seriously guys, try to fix that problem with the crashes. Everyone in the lab knew that when I screamed, it was because the program had a crash and I hadn’t saved the progress). And later, I learned how to use a 3D printer, a machine beyond my wildest dreams! I remember the infinite sadness the first time I went to the amazing Pier 9 (new installations of Instructables and the Autodesk Consumer Group) and thought I could never try that fantastic technology; and the happiness when Noah told me I could stay two months more! You have all the best freaking hi-tech tools in this freaking world, and you don’t need to be a NASA scientist or a millionaire to use them! This place is waiting for people of all the world, to come with their ideas! (It doesn’t matter how crazy they are). 3D printers, laser cutters, a water jet, a bunch of expensive machines I still don’t know the names of, an awesome test kitchen, metal and wood shops, even a sewing area! And all available for the DIY community! But, more than being on Pier 9 because the fantastic machines, I loved to stay here because Instructables.  My life has good things and bad things, successes and failures. But being part of Instructables and sharing moments with all of you has been the most memorable experience of my whole existence! ……………………………………… I want to say something to my dear friends of Instructables and Autodesk: if one day, for some inexplicable reason, you feel like your work is meaningless, you don’t like it’s Monday or simply you forgot what this is all about, just remember something: you will never know exactly how many lives Instructables has touched: how many persons found their true calling thanks to the projects, and how many persons found a hobby that makes their life happier. How many couples fell in love thanks to the delicious recipes and romantic crafts, and how many parents shared precious moments with their sons building something. But now you will always know, at least, Instructables and Autodesk saved one life. My life! ……………………………………… I wish to finish my post with some “Doctor Who” quote. I love “Doctor Who”, because is all about being awesome and optimistic and keep smiling even in the worst situations or despite you are feeling absolutely sad and alone. And the series has a lot of badass and beautiful quotes! But now, when I have to start packing my bags, when I have to return to my hometown where I have to pretend I’m a “normal” person and try to get a “normal” job again, when I have to say goodbye to my coworkers (that are at the same time most of the only real friends I have had in my life), and to the greatest organization I have had the honor of being part (where for first time in life I felt truly appreciated, respected and loved, and happy because it was Monday and I could go to work in a company that is making of this world a better place); there’s one, and only one phrase that I got stuck on my head; the last words of David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor when, standing alone after saying goodbye to his loved ones (and to the most awesome time of his life), his final moment comes: “I don’t want to go.” Mario Caicedo Langer Former Artist in Residence. BP Holdings , BP styrelsen godkänner Rosneft Deal l Current

Många soldat löner fördubblats i januari. BP Holdings

Oil Spill Water Cleanups As Fast As They Happen

We live and survive on oil today. That dependence won’t go away for at least a few more generations. Today’s technology allows us to drill oil just about anywhere in the world, and then move it to anywhere we want using behemoth water vessels. Unfortunately, there’s a dark side to all this and it happens when our technology fails us, as periodically demonstrated by mankind’s great oil spill disasters. The most recent being the Gulf Oil Spill of 2010. The amount of oil actually dumped upon our ecosphere and contaminating the environment was mind boggling. The numbing numbers are so large that we can’t even get our minds around it. And we all know that the responsible drilling company won’t fess up to how much was really spilled because even they don’t know, don’t want to know and furthermore want to forget about it. Is there some way to tackle this oil spill problem through the use of the very culprit that created it, namely technology? Of course there is, but it will cost the billions they used to clean up the mess they created in the first place.  We want to develop a technological process to be used worldwide that borrows from what we currently know, and clean up these oil spills almost as quickly as they happen upon our seascape. Did we finally clean up the Gulf oil spill?  Yes, maybe? But it took too long and we either didn’t use the right equipment or not enough prepared and available equipment to check the problem. Time is probably the most critical factor involved in mitigating oil spill disasters. While Nature obviously works to clean up ecological disasters, she takes perhaps a decade or more to make a region whole again. We need to help nature accelerate her time schedule to a few weeks not decades! Oil cleanup equipment exists that is too painstakingly slow and inefficient to get the job done quickly and effectively, and to recapture ~99% of the oil spilled. Today’s processes are makeshift, disjointed, and not organized nor designed to tackle today’s mega-proportion oil spill problems.  We need a cohesive mega-solution to handle mega-problem oil spills. A virtual army of specialists with proper equipment to attack, gather up and capture, then deliver the spilled oil to vessel staging platforms. These huge platforms will separate 99.9% of the captured oil/water, dumping the water back.  Oil tankers on standby then take this recaptured crude oil to refineries. This process must be set up with the proper equipment to dynamically proceed in real time. Only high sea states should be capable of halting its operation. The process of oil/water cleanup requires the serial use of various sequential operations where each performs a key stage of the operatic procedure. The orchestration starts with techniques that initially yield the biggest volumetric punch first, then refines this processing by using less volumetric cleaning ability but greater oil separation capability. All the while we have deployed an improved form of today’s containment apron, capable of hundreds of miles of coverage to prevent spreading the spilled oil slick to shore. Having researched today’s available oil spill removal systems, their usefulness has been categorized according to volumetric processing capability per time. Fast surface skimming techniques plus “huge”, constant flowing centrifugal separators clearly win, but are not 100% effective. Sponge-type, oil absorbent techniques then come to play as they are useful in nearly recapturing the remaining 0.1% oil from the water, but are slow and will be used solely on the remaining 99.99% pure water expelled from our centrifugal oil separators. Today we literally use these absorbers like sponges, dunking them into the oil slick, waiting awhile and pulling them out after they’ve absorbed some oil. Such prolonged processing times are unacceptable. Absorbers are to be used differently than today, their performance is vastly accelerated as they now act as 0.1% oil filters to process the pressurized water expelled from the centrifugal separators. The final residuals of perhaps 0.01% that the high pressure absorber filtration misses will require oil break down chemistry whose end products are environmentally friendly and allows Nature to restore balance. So the actual water dumped back will be better than 99.99% pure. Now let’s break this process down a bit and address the pieces of equipment involved. Our attack vessels are special, high speed catamarans that ferry cars between different ports today. They use water-jet propulsion, are extremely fast, maneuverable, and will be equipped with a special front-end water scoop to pick up the oil/water slick in real time while propelled forward. Their scoop or nozzle articulates, performing real time adjustments responding to oil slick depths thereby avoiding too much water pickup. Once their holding tanks are full, they reconnoiter with waiting intermediate-sized tankers to quickly dump their oil/water cargo. When these tankers are full, they deposit their load to one of the huge vessel platforms. These staging platforms use centrifugal systems to quickly and efficiently separate huge quantities of the oil and water, and dump the 99.9% cleaned water overboard (Nature effectively handles the remaining 0.1% of oil). When their tanks are full of oil, they start emptying themselves into the large standby oil tankers for delivery to refineries. QED. For you science fiction/fact fans, this concept requires enormous equipment, is on a huge scale and if viewed as one harmonious system may be the first Oil-Terra-Forming machine to be used on our planet.

The best car ad ever made

A family member sent me this ad that was posted on craigslist, while it was the most explicit ad I've ever seen, I'd prefer this over any normal ad. Enjoy those who feel comfortable reading this. DISCLAIMER:  I bleeped (****) out any explicit words...... Though I could have missed s-something.  And explicit's definition is different between people Side note: If anyone thinks this is a tad (or more than a tad) over the top, PM me or reply saying so. I'll delete it. - - - If you think you'll be offended by this ad... DON'T READ IT.  - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - POS 1994 Honda Civic LX for sale - $600 (Marietta, GA) Date: 2010-07-11, 4:49PM EDT Reply to: sale-63pgj-1837513434@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?] That's right, you can own a piece of shi... history right now for only $600. You may wonder why I didn't post a picture and that's because with a car this crappy, a photo is not needed. Just imagine the worst possible car and then picture a camel taking a dump in the trunk and you'll have a close approximation. You don't need to worry about me lying... it really is a POS. There is no risk of you getting over here and finding out it's really a gorgeous gem worth thousands... that doesn't happen...ever. But if for some reason that's actually happened to you, then you are acquainted with a crazy cosmic karma that has never thought to even piss in my face. I almost had a date on PlentyofFish and you know what happened? The f***ing AC died. For two years while I was not dating, it worked fine. The day after I get digits, the AC craps out. The car also has a weird hesitation problem that was not fixed even when I replaced the fuel filter. What could cause all of these things? Satan in the drive train...that's right... it's rare, but it happens to guys like me. This car is actually demon-possessed so you can forget about any sort of easy fix. Jesus said you need faith to cast out demons like this and believe me there are only two people on the planet that have that sort of faith. One guy lives in a cave in India and the other guy is dead. And you can forget about the guy in the cave helping you because, if you can find him, he's just going to tell you how physical setbacks are really spiritual blessings...blah blah blah...yada yada yada. Exactly. Don't expect sympathy from any motherf***er that sits around in his underwear in a cave. Other problems with this car include busted boots on the tie-rod ends, busted wheel hub boots, broken AC, leaking power steering system, ABS light always on, check-engine light comes on occasionally, driver window sometimes comes off the track, paint has permanent dirt in it (yes, it's f***ing permanent...you can't scrub it out with anything less than sandpaper or some highly explosive chemical that causes cancer in 49 states and erectile dysfunction in the 50th.) The car does drive, but that's about all it's good for. Good luck getting it to pass emissions. I've never tried as it's still registered in Clarke County. If you want to date, this car is probably not for you. On a positive note though, I can assure you no one has ever had sex in it. It would take a miracle to get a girl to even sit in this car, much less take her clothes off in it. Other possible uses for this car included entertainment at frat parties. You could charge people $5 a swing with a baseball bat, although you still probably wouldn't recover your investment. You might be able to sell it to the Mythbusters and get the to test the myth, "Is it possible that a car could really be this s***ty?" Adam Savage and Kari Byron will have a field day and close it off with "Myth f***ing confirmed" and a side comment from Kari about how whatever d*****bag use to own it must have never been laid. There are some positives like a beautiful Lumar 32% tint job, keyless entry with remote trunk release, an Alpine CD Player, and Pioneer speakers in the door. So at worst, you can sit in your driveway and listen to music with a bottle of Jergens and a picture of Eliza Dushku. I really wouldn't recommend taking it on the road until you replace the tie-rod ends. You might crash into a bus full of nuns and then the Pope will reign motherf***ing hail fire down on your betrodden a** with more fury than the inquisition because you actually decided to drive and be seen in such an amazing POS, killing 20 of his lovely Sisters. One other thing you might use this car would be pushing it off a cliff. If you've ever wanted to see what it's like first hand for a car to fall hundreds of feet and smash against rock, then here's your chance. Although don't be surprised if this demon-possessed sleigh from hell manages to f*** up your good time even in that bold scenario. I don't know how it would, but it would probably figure out a way. If there are any parents out there reading this, don't let your children fall into the situation I'm in. I would never have ended up with this car if I had pursued a real career. But instead I majored in math where the best job I can find now is up in Portland with a bunch of bran muffin eating hippies, jerking off Moose for 75 cents a smile for some wildlife conservation sperm bank. Let your kids do something with good with their future, like wait tables at Denny's. Oh yeah... it's white, 4 doors, and automatic. Whooptie-f***in-do!

Valley View Park: An RCT3 park

I have seen many people on the Atari community forums make a park and tell a storyline of the park and it's owner. I decided I would start this one on Instructables. Remember that this storyline stuff is not my own idea but the park is and the actual storyline of this park is also original. I will be explaining each picture in depth. When I put a number in the text it means you should look at that picture. Fun fact: There are 47 pictures! :-O                                                            March 2010 It has been officially announced in the paper that a new theme park has opened on the Spring highway about forty kilometres Northwest of Central Coast, Australia. The funds from several schools and high schools around Central Coast had gone to Mr. Fredrickson to build some kind of entertainment on this small piece of land just after the Trail river bridge. He has apparently decided to build a theme park called Valley View Park. Part of the park can be seen from the bridge as seen in the following picture:1. The entrance can be seen in the following picture.2. It may only be the opening day but it seems people have found out about the inauguration day. People are already coming down the path that leads to the entrance as seen in picture 3. Photographers from local newspapers have been given permission to take pictures and write articles about the new park. Picture 4 shows a camera crew coming across the bridge. Mr Fredrickson has decided to give the camera crew a tour of the park. As the crew enters the park they can see several undercover food stalls as seen in picture 5. There are a few more stalls on the right and an entrance to a garden in picture 6. In picture 7 you can see the rest of the main street including information booths and a bathroom at the end. You must travel through a brick building to get to the garden and picture 8 shows the garden from the inside of the building. Once the crew explored the garden they continued the tour down the main street and found the entrance to main ride of the park which is called Blackbeard's Voyage as seen in pictures 9 and 10. It is surrounded by a castle and can't be seen until the crew enters the castle structure. Upon entering the crew finds out that the ride is a pirate ship ride surrounded by pirate animatronics as seen in picture 11. As they get closer to the entrance of the pirate ship, they get a much better picture of the ride. Picture 12. Mr Fredrickson gave the camera crew a picture of when it had finished being constructed. Picture 13 shows how there are several cannons pointing towards the ship when the ship is in motion. This gives the peeps an experience of being on a pirate ship. Luckily the cannons don't shoot cannonballs. Mr Fredrickson has no plans of relocating it or taking it out of the park as it is the most popular ride and the castle surrounding it brings lots of peeps to the ride. In picture 14 you can see the control booth where the operators are. As the crew exited the ride they saw treasure chest all over he place as seen in picture 15. The exit leads back to the main street so they kept walking and turned right at the entrance of Blackbeard's voyage and saw the top spinner ride called Inversion Spinner seen in pic 16. Before riding the Inversion Spinner Mr Fredrickson wanted to show the camera crew the viewing tower to the left seen in pic 17. Pics 18 and 19 show the flight of stairs and the viewing balcony. After coming out Mr Fredrickson directed the crew to a small garden with an oak tree in the middle. Pics 20 and 21 show the garden. Mr Fredrickson explained that the tree is an endangered oak so he decided to build the park around and keep it in good condition. Pic 22 shows the entrance to Inversion Spinner and pic 23 shows the ride. Pic 24 shows the control booth for this ride. Pics 25 to 27 show the entrance to the Viewing Canopy and pic 28 shows the viewing canopy. Pic 29 shows the bridge from the lookout. People come here to see the the valley and the Trail river which can be seen in pic 30. As the Camera crew exited the viewing canopy Mr Fredrickson took them to the next ride which is a spiral slide named Python. Pics 31 and 32. Pics 33 and 34 show the entrance to the next ride which is a twirler ride named Twister. Pic 35 shows the ride's control booth. Pics 36 and 37 show more of the ride. This ride is not as popular as the other rides so it would not be surprising if it was taken out at some stage. Pic 38 shows the exit of the ride. The park owner then takes the crew to the las ride which is a ferris wheel named Junior Wheel. Pics 39 and 40 show the entrance to the ride and pic 41 shows the ride. pic 42 shows the control booth. This is a popular ride for couples and small kids. Pic 43 shows the park view from the top of the Junior Wheel. After the crew left the ride they headed back to the main street shown in pic 44. Before they left the park they interviewed Mr Fredrickson about upcoming plans. Here is what the park owner had to say: "The staff and I are very happy about how popular our opening day was. We have already been able to determine the most popular rides although this may change in the future. If we get as much money as today for the next few months we'll be able to expand the park and add more rides. We have recieved many questions from guests asking if there is a roller coaster in the park. That may be a possibility in the future. We are now focusing on buying two pieces of land that belong to local farmers. Pic 45 shows both properties. The large property is very barren and the farmer would be happy to sell it at a good price. The second property will be harder to buy because it's owner has had a good harvesting year. If we can raise enough money to buy the properties then it will give us much more land to build on. Any other future plans will not be revealed today." The owner gave the crew a great tour of the park and they plan to publish it in the newspaper as soon as possible. The future looks bright for this new park. Pics 46 and 47 show the park from an aerial view. Be sure to check back every now and then for updates on the park. Any questions will be answered. Please subscribe and thanks for taking your time to read this. The updates won't have to be as long as this one.

Help With Arduino Robot Arm Record & Playback With SD Card, Bluetooth

Hi, I need some help please with the following code - lots of errors occur when I try to verify it. The author is unavailable for help & the code appears to be in the public domain.
