3G "adaptor" for ADSL Router

I was looking for a 3G Router and I was thinking about the ADSL router I have at home and if I can use the same one with the 3G Huawei card that I have. I don't have a landlines because the telecoms company has no infrastructure where I live.   So would it be possible to have some kind of adaptor that connects to the port where the phone line goes in but on the other end have a USB port that you can plug in the 3G card? There would need to be some kind of electronics/software in between I suppose. Any Ideas on how this can be done or if it can be done?

Charing an iPhone 3g with batteries

Hi all, I've been trying to charge my iPhone 3g with AA batteries. I have the batteries, which are producing 6 volts and about 2700 millamps hooked up to a 5 volt, 1 amp regulator. Then I have the output of the regulator hooked up to a female usb, which charges my friend's phone fine (generic samsung). However, when I hook it up to my iphone charger, it doesn't seem like its charging and the charging screen does not come up. Does anyone know what the problem is? Thanks,

[GUIDE] Raspberry Pi 3g Internet Wifi Access Point (Optional script to sniff login details)

Wasn't sure where to put this, thought it might be of interest to someone in here :) As a project, I set up my Raspberry Pi as a 3g internet Wireless AP to strip SSL from secure websites and harvest the login details. I wanted to show how easy it would be for someone to set up wireless AP providing free internet, with the equipment hidden - maybe in a backpack - and sit in a public place grabbing login details without anyone suspecting a thing. In the future I would like to do this while running the Pi from a battery bank. Guide to set up Raspberry Pi as a 3g Wireless AP Tutorial on writing BASH script to harvest login details

Top iPhone Instructables

Apple has released the new iPhone--and there are Instructables to make it better. Check out these iPhone-related Instructables, some of our favorites, that can make your iPhone better prepared for everyday use. Retractable Headphones Headphones are always getting tangled up in knots, but these recoiling headphones will keep the wires conveniently curled up and ready to use.   Business Card Stand Using just a business card, you can make this simple stand on which you can watch movies or just let your iPhone rest. Handgun Handset By talking into the grip, listening through the barrel, and starting and finishing your calls with a pull of the trigger of this modified airsoft gun, your iPhone calls will never be the same again. If you get trigger-happy, though, you might end up with a bunch of dropped calls. Book Safe As long as you don't choose a piece of classic literature, you can safely conceal your iPhone inside of a book with this design. Car Stand You don't want to be talking on your phone while you're driving, but this car stand will keep the iPhone in a convenient position for music and other purposes during car trips. One-Hand Use A simple loop attached to the back of the iPhone can make one-handed iPhone-ing simple and secure. And these are just a few--there are plenty more great iPhone Instructables to use!

Amazon Kindle (UK) question

I am toying with the idea of getting an ebook reader, mainly for reading downloaded books such.  Apparently the Kindle can show ordinary PDF files quite successfully, and is quite a reasonable price. I have a question, though, that Amazon haven't answered clearly - what web sites can it access? The Kindle has wifi, and there's a version with (free) 3G connectivity for downloading books.  But, what websites will it access?  Could I visit any website at all (such as Gutenberg Press, or even Instructables), or is it restricted to visiting Amazon's own ebook store?  Would it be capable of accessing an email account?  I can't get a straight answer (although I suspect the answer is that access is restricted, since access to Wikipedia is presented as a specific feature). According to Amazon's 3G coverage map, There is a decent signal where I live, where I work, and where my parents live.  If I can visit whatever sites I like, the extra £40 for 3G would be worth it.  If I can only visit "approved" sites, then I would stick to the wifi version and load up books by USB.

What to do with an old 3G dongle?

Hi guys - This is my first post.   Basically I have a ton of IT gear lying around from disassembled laptops etc but I stumbled across an old 3G dongle from the 3 Wireless Network (UK). I think I can unlock it with https://www.dc-unlocker.com but I wondered what else I migh be able to repurpose it into? Could I stream media to it via a USB enabled TV? Any suggestions for projects welcome. Steve

Problems with instructables on iphone 3g

Ok, the following bug was experienced on the iphone 3g while i was connected on a 4 bar edge connection. I logged into instructables.com and replied to a comment with superjustin 18. or at least i tried. the first time i tried to reply, the safari browser closed automatically and i was taken back to the home screen before the text box showed up. the second time, i could type a reply and i hit "post comment", but while it was loading, the browser quit again, and i was taken back to the home screen. however, a quick check under my computer shows the comment made it through safe on both counts, when i reopened safari, i was logged out, even when i checked remember could this please be fixed soon? thanks if you can!

How to Make iPhone 3G Charger

Ok, I'm trying to make this, but I'm not sure how it should be made. http://tzywen.com/modules.php?name=News&file;=article&sid;=696 So far, this is what I have: http://www.imgcafe.com/view/view/?v=untitlwww.png "Red Wire" and "Black Wire" are from the Male USB Connector. I also followed this Female USB Pinout. http://www.pc-control.co.uk/usb%20pinout.htm I used the Top Right (A) of the four diagrams. Yes, I don't know what the heck I'm doing with this. I'm not sure how to follow that diagram.

Powering a Wi-Fi router from USB

Hello guys! Few days ago I bought a Huawei B260a 3G Wifi Router (http://www.mobilityminded.com/6685/huawei-b260-3g-gateway-review-routing-a-cellular-data-connection). The power supply has an output of 5V/2A and is connected to the router with a USB B plug. In my car I have a Belkin USB charger with 2,1A output. So it would be nice if I could use the router in my car. I tried to connect the Router to a USB wall charger (5,1V/2,1A) with a standard USB A to B cable, but this didn't work. Furthermore I tried to cut the cable and connect only the black and red wires, this also didn't work. Somebody told me that the layout of the plug is different (as far as I've seen, at least the contacts match to the standard), can this be true? And is there a possibility to realize my idea of a hotspot in my car? Thanks for your help!

iPhone 3GS clip on 100 LED floodlight/flash type thing

As many iPhone users will know the camera is useless in low light, the other night I experimented with a 2 white led torch and with 28 IR leds that are in my night vision cctv camera, the results were reasonable with the 2 white led light. What I want to make is this..... 100 x 15,000 mcd white LED (10 x 10 or 5 X 20 formation ) running from a 1200Mah Nokia BL5-F battery sandwiched between a clear hard-case and another clip on case with a push to make button on what would be the top right corner when when used in landscape mode. The ones I'm looking at consume 25Mah at 3-3.5V, for power I want to use an after-market nokia N95 BL-5F 3.7V Li ion 1200Mah, I think when they are all lit they will draw 2000Mah but as they would only be lit for about 3 seconds a time so this should not stress the battery too badly and last long enoughfor a night out.  I've posted this because I would have just ran them all in series but I have heard there need to be special regulators or something. How can I make this? Can I just run 100 25Mah LEDs in series? Would I need two batteries in series and maybe running 5 sets of 20 with a regulator each? Is 1,500,000Mcd too much? Should I use less LEDs of the same rating? Should I use the same 100 with less Mcd? Any help is greatley welcome and of course there there will be a full instructable with credit to all who helped with information. Thanks WelshDave.

internet for xbox live

I used to have high speed internet., the service provider was AT&T. One day we could not get internet. at&t said we had it. The main point is that we don;t have any more. I was looking into one of those connect cards, and wondered is it fast enough for xbox live. Do you need 3G coverage for it to work.. I live right out side the boundry between 3G and the lower bit for Verizion. I checked a local cell phone service coverage and its the same thing as Verizion. My question is what do I do. Are the conect cards fast enough any way or what. And if so, who has the best. the cheapest, and the best MB limit.  Who should I go with and what do I do. My local cell company is Cellular South. I was looking at CS's Huawei EC 168 Data Card. Just google cellular south connect card to find it.  I am definetly going to get the 5 gigs of possible downloads.(if my parents will pay for it) I am only 14, so I can't do a whole lot. Please help!

cell phone call incdicator

I use a bluetooth headset at work.  problem is, no one can tell when  i'm on the phone.  i need a simple light to go on when the call comes in, and go off when i hang up.  simple, right? i have an iphone. i tried one of those light-up keychain fobs, but they don't work on 3G.  don't really know what they work on anymore. i tried a simple manual light switch, but that was too cumbersome. i'm thinking that it should probably be something like a bluetooth - oriented thing, or possibly something that can plug into either the power port or headphone port of the iphone. any ideas?

Mobile pc communications

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this so i'm sorry if its not. I am looking to control a set of switches using an old mobile phone connected to my PC. Sending a text message to the phone would let you do various things depending on the text message content. I don't even know if this would be possible but it is something I am looking to do and this seems to be one of the solutions (if possible) to what I need to do. If anyone else can help me with a way to control anything remotely without a wireless Internet connection, possibly even if its only 3G/EDGE/HSDPA Thanks

RGB Potentiometer help!

Hey guys and girls, I've got a question! I've got 3 voltage regulators set up in parallel, wired to output 3.27V @ an amperage that I don't know (for some reason I can't get a reading on my e-meter) Anyway, The outputs from those 3 regulators are going to 3 pots, which in turn go to a set of 3 LEDs, 9 in total (3R 3G and 3B). My problem is that those pots have a max resistance of 2k ohms, and that the LEDs aren't shutting off when the resistance is maxed out. Can you guys find a way to make the LEDs shut off, yet still go on at full blast when the Pots are open? Thanks, -Josh

Steampunk Mobile

Some great ideas come from taking a completely new gadget and making it something that looks like, and in this case sort of works like, something from the 19th century. This steampunk cell phone concept has no display. No 3G. No data plan. No games. It doesn't even have a dial pad. You make your calls with binary-coded punch cards, steampunk. All you get in this rugged brown package is an earpiece, (possibly faux) gauges, visible screws, and a spinning number-counter. Oh, and a hole punch every time you want to order a pizza. The project was developed for O2, aiming at the RPG player market (really!). I don't think it works. It would be cool if it did, but I don't think so...UnplggdOriginal designer

NSURLErrorDomain error 400 when saving instructable

I'm working on an instructable on my iPhone 4g (iOS 7.1) using the instructables app, and when I save it to instuctables.com I get a NSURLErrorDomain error 400 (see screenshot). I don't know which version of the app I'm running, but there are no updates available in the store so it must be the latest. Yesterday it would randomly happen... I'd try the upload again and it would work. But now it's consistent. I'm able to save it to the device, go back and edit the version I've saved to my iPhone but I can't upload it to the site. I have killed the app, rebooted the phone, and prayed to the demo gods to no effect. I've also tried it on wireless and 3G. I am, however, able to create a new dummy instructable and upload that, so maybe there's something up with the one I'm working on?

Wanted: Car Sensing Camera

Hello, I'm looking to build a solar powered camera that detects cars moving past and takes a photo. I've been trialing an off the shelf model that relies on software to detect motion but it does not perform well when the cars are travelling over 15km/h. For this reason I'd like to try and develop a camera that senses the magnetic properties of a car (like traffic lights). I'm open to suggestions but here's how I picture it working: Magnetometer detects car > Micro controller > Camera > Micro controller > 3G/4G antenna > Internet. The system would need to be powered by a battery which is charged by a solar panel. Send me an email and we can chat on how to tackle the project. I work for an environmental consultancy so we can provide you with proof of an internship. impact.environmental.ptyltd@gmail.com Thanks.

Removing a teeny/tiny iPod/iPhone drilled screw

Hello, I have been doing some repair work on an iPod Touch 3G. One repair I'm having to perform is the power button which is totally unresponsive. This required removing some very soft tiny screws at the bottom of the device. Unfortunately, one didn't survive the screwdriver and quickly chewed up, which means I've had to drill it using a drill bit, which took a surprising amount of effort. The problem now I have is extracting the final stem which is still screwed in. The stem isn't flush with the metal but it's not far off, making it hard to grab using pliers. I'm looking for some suggestions how to remove it. I've read that cutting a thin screwdriver in half and gluing it using super glue is a way. Another way seems to buying an extraction set but the only one I can find in the area looks far too big (despite having a precision piece). Thoughts? All suggestions welcome.

SOLAR POWERED IP CAMERA RUN ON 3G MODEM

Hi everyone, im a new member and have a task at hand which is a puzzle to me but would probably be a breeze for u tech savvy bunch :-) Ok heres my dilemma: I have a remote location where i want to setup an IP Camera run on Solar Power. I have purchased a wireless 802.11 ip camera with pan and tilt capabilities as well as an audio in (internal mic) and an audio out (1 x audio line out interface) along with 4 alarm in and out male ports. Heres what i want to be able to do: 1. View the cam remotely via PC/Mobile Phone. 2. Utilise the Pan and Tilt capabilities 3. Have a text message/email sent to me everytime the alarm is activated/motion is detected 4. Be able to have audio in and out 5. Have the camera on standby until motion is detected 6. Have the solar power as the only source of energy for the camera and the camera to be able to run 24hrs a day (standby and in use) 7. Was also wanting the solar power to charge batteries so at night time the cam would still work or if its a cloudy day etc etc Now im thinking that i would need a modem with a sim card in it to work the internet side of things. But how would i go about getting the audio and alarm functions working? I can plug an ethernet cable into a modem and put a sim card into a modem and connect the cam and modem up to a solar power source, but where the heck do i plug the audio and alarm cables into??? In the below link theres specs on the cam as well as pics of the types of connections available on the cam. I wouldnt have a clue about Volts and Watts and amps etc so am stuck at just buying the cam which is here: http://www.aliexpress.com/fm-store/107302/211328538-491571938/Promotion-free-shipping-cctv-wirless-ip-camera-wifi-802-11-b-g-9-language-m-jpeg.html Please help ladies and gents it would be kindly appreciated. Thanking you in advance for your words of wisdom.  p.s. i have scoured the forums and google for this type of setup and have got close but need something custom for my situation and my low level of knowledge in these areas.

Fallout Pip-Boy Iphone

Hello. I've been coming to this website for some time now and I must say there are some very creative people on here kudos to all of you. Any way my topic is: I'm thinking of making a Fallout 3 Pip-Boy 3000-style case for my Iphone 3G  (when I get one that is) and be able to wear it. I have seen a topic on here that is similar and I've seen a video that someone has already done this but it was made out of the Limited Edition clock and frankly I just can't afford that it costs roughly 90 pounds, just too much for something that I'll be taking apart any way. I was thinking of creating my own Pip-Boy out of a plastic tube, some polystyrene and an old screw case but after a talk with my father Polystyrene just crumble's so that's gone down. Then i though why not make a mold out of plasticene (modeling clay) but how do I go about that?. What is the material I need that will be sturdy enough to keep my phone safe?. Resin wont do nor will fiber glass. Can anyone tell me what is a good compensation for those or will those two work?. Yours sincerely Just Killing Time.

Hulu App For Iphone!

Big news for the iPhone and iPod touch owners! Hulu is finally developing an app for the iPhone. From cNet news...Silicon Alley Insider is reporting that a dedicated Hulu application is indeed on its way to the iPhone and should be here in just a few months.SAI says the application will work over Wi-Fi and AT&T;'s 3G network, meaning that users will be able to view programming anywhere with a fast data connection.Rumors suggesting that an iPhone-friendly version of Hulu swirled around this time last year, however, they predated the launch of the App Store, and Hulu flat-out denied that one was being worked on.This time around, though, it's far more plausible, with the upcoming iPhone OS 3.0 software update, which lets developers bake streaming media into their applications. For Hulu, this means that the advertising could be stuck into the mobile stream and that users would be able to watch videos without leaving the application. One of the things that keep this rumor from holding water is that Hulu is in direct competition with Apple's iTunes business. Users of Hulu can watch ad-supported, full-length television shows and movies on their personal computers for free, instead of paying Apple to download a copy for offline viewing. If such an app were available on the iPhone, it would also offer portable TV and movie watching, something not yet offered in Apple's own mobile iTunes app, which is limited to video podcasts. In past instances of this, the company has simply denied applications such as Podcaster from making it through the app approval process, only to launch it as a first party feature later on.On the other hand, some of Hulu's competitors have already gotten a foot in the door, including Joost and CBS-owned TV.com, which has its own iPhone application that streams in content in chunks. In addition, Google's YouTube, whose application comes preinstalled on the iPhone, has recently reached an agreement with major studios, including Sony Pictures, Lions Gate Entertainment, and CBS (publisher of CNET News), to offer visitors full-length TV shows and feature films. If Hulu can't manage to pull off getting advertisements in the stream, using this system, it would be fairly simple to force users to sit through advertisements between clips.Link.

iPad Problems - 14 Problems with Apple's iPad

Apple just revealed the new Apple iPad Tablet that will probably make it one of the first failures by Apple's latest line of products. Apple revealed this new Tablet PC as a challenger to netbooks. However, it's already been labeled a "less powerful, but more expensive netbook." Here are 14 iPad problems that made this Apple iPad an iDisappointment. 1. No Multitasking The Apple iPad is just like the iPhone, in that there is no multitasking. You can't work on a document and talk on AIM or Gtalk. In other words, the iPad just a giant iPod Touch (the iPod Touch being better) and cannot match netbooks. 2. It Has an Awkward Design The design is a bit awkward because you have to hold it in one hand and balance it while your other hand uses the functionality or more likely you will need to put it on your knees to use it properly. It's like holding a monitor, I'm sure nothing will happen to it. Some people complain about the Bezel being too large, but perhaps this was necessary so that you don't constantly give commands while moving around. 3. No Adobe Flash Were you considering watching Hulu on this? How about youtube (well we'll have to wait for an app for that)? Thinking of playing flash games while waiting on the bus? Oh well. 4. No USB, Need Adapters Again with the iPod design, you need to plug in the special Apple adapter. If you lose it, you'll have to buy another. If you want to plug in multiple devices you need USB to iPad adapters! Since it's not even using Mac OS, most USB devices would probably not work anyway. 5. AT&T; Once Again Are you thinking of purchasing the 3G version? You'll need to get it with AT&T; and think of how overloaded their service will be now. There is no Verizon, T-Mobile, or Sprint service available for this product, some of which has better coverage. You can't use T-Mobile's 3G at all because of their MicroSIM made specifically for AT&T.; 6. Memory Business Model Apple will charge you extra for higher memory. It's a business model they use for all their products to increase profits. That's why they don't want other storage devices being inserted to improve memory. You're also stuck with a limit of 64GB, so don't think about putting in all your music, movies, or games. 7. Touch Keyboard Many people were complaining about the touchscreen keyboard. Which would be fine if it worked perfectly and you didn't have to sit it exactly on your lap and make sure it's flat. You can however, attach an Apple keyboard, just another way for Apple to make money. 8. App Store Again Just like the iPod Touch you have to download everything from an App store. Meaning if you don't like Safari, you're stuck with it. Some apps may be banned once again. 9. No Cameras Yeah no web cams on the front, and no cameras for photos or videos from the back either. 10. No Removable Battery You can't just take an extra battery with you on a long trip because the battery works the same way as an iPod (though my bet is, it doesn't last as long). 11. No HDMI/DVI Output You can't plug this thing into your TV to display your HD movies. You'd need AppleTV for that. 12. No Widescreen 16:9 ain't happening, you're stuck with a 4:3 screen. 13. No GPS There's no GPS, so --unlike the T-Mobile MyTouch or the Verizon Droid which both run on Android, can multitask and have GPS so that you can use the Beta Google Maps Navigation system for turn-by-turn directions-- you're stuck with locating yourself via WiFi hotspots. 14. It's Large, Slow, and Clunky Not only will you have to buy accessories to protect your device, it's very large making it easy to drop and probably won't live a healthy life in a backpack filled with notebooks and other possibly sharp objects. There may be a number of accessories sold by Apple to cover some of these problems. The iPad max speed is 1GHz (A4 processor) and will probably be just as slow surfing the web as most other smartphones and it won't match up to netbooks. There is no Mac OS X or anything either, it's definitely the iPhone OS except without the Phone capability and of course I'm sure they will ban Google Voice and Skype. The iPad is about the size of a Kindle, so it is nice for reading e-books I suppose, but then I'm not sure why I wouldn't just buy a Kindle. As with all companies that initially have much success, they get a little overconfident and launch a product just to create more hype and increase their stock prices.   More related iPad Problem resources: ipad wiki - What you need to know about iPad The iPad is a tablet computer developed by Apple Inc. Announced on January 27, 2010, it is similar in functionality to the iPhone and iPod touch, running the same operating system (iPhone OS) and almost all of the same applications...

Did you miss me?

You may have noticed that I mysteriously stopped posting for a couple of days. I've been camping! I came on as a last-minute substitute when another leader was unexpectedly hospitalised, and whizzed off to Gilwell 24 with a small group of our Explorer Scouts. It's an awesome event for teenage scouts - from 09:00 Saturday, to 09:00 Sunday, 24 hours of non-stop activities without the requirement of sleep.  Four thousand Explorer Scouts took up the challenge, and almost all of them managed a full 24 hours of extreme Scouting. 3G Swing Archery Bushcraft Zone Bouldering Campfire Climbing (Outdoor rock and revolving wall) Craft zone Crate stacking Disco Fairground Flying Trapeze Geocaching Giant games Gilwell gauntlet Global Zone - including Shelterbox High ropes course Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting Mountain boarding Orienteering Outdoor arena Quad Bikes Outdoor Woodland Quaser Raft Racing / Boat Racing Rifle Shooting Competition Scavenger hunt Scuba Diving Slacklining Speed climbing Segways Simulators Technology zone Water rockets Assault Course Car driving Go Karts Power Boking Inflatables Fire Building Fishing Military Activity Team Speed Stacking Caving Zorbing As well crafts and other activities going on all the time (I had my first go at wood-turning at 14:00, and was soldering together an AM band radio at 22:30 (goodness me, the writing on a capacitor gets small later at night!)). Add to that a month's rain in about 20 hours, giving liquid mud on the scale of Glastonbury, it's hardly a surprise that every single Explorer fell asleep on the train home. Because my standing-in was very short notice, none of my electronics were properly charged, but I did get a few snaps of the atmosphere before my iPod completely died. I have never been so wet or so dirty on a camping trip, and I was taking it easy - it's the first time I've been forced to pack my tent away wet and muddy at the end of a camp. If you're a Scout or an Explorer, and will be over 13½ next July, why not take up the challenge yourself? If you fancy taking part, offering an activity, or otherwise getting involved in next year's event, they are already taking comments and ideas.  If you're not in Scouting, and didn't realise it was so awesome (or that girls are allowed at any age), then why not think about joining? (As an aside, I'd never seen Rock-It-Ball being played before.  Looks fun.)
