I am making an inverter whivh converts 12 V dc to 230 V ac i am using 2 33 ohm resistor of 1 watt to connect the load on transformer whenever i switch on the ckt the 1 watt resistor are heating to much and multimeter does not show any voltage i am using 12 Volt dc 2.5AH battery as power supply what is the problem

DC to AC Inverting for boat

This spring I am looking to build a pontoon boat from scratch (Besides the pontoon logs). Its going to be a large boat and I am wanting a few amenities to go along with it. Im trying to figure away convert the car battery wich is on the boat to power appliances such as mini-fridge, lights, radio, box fan, and maybe a PS2 with Television. I need a high wattage out-put to power everything too. For sure: 8 lights - 75 Watts ea. 20 inch tall Mini-fridge - 200 watts Stereo - 150 watts Box Fan - 120 Watts Maybes: PS2 - 180 watts 20" Television - 300 watts I want this to work if all the for sures were going at once. I want to know how many car batteries I will need approx for 10 hours (or longer) of use with the "For Sures" And I want a clean way of doing this. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Looking for design help.

I want to build a dc-dc converter with input voltage from 10 to 30 volts and output of 13.5 at 400 watts. This is so I can power a 400 watt inverter from 2 batteries on my camper... I am frustrated with the inverters shutting down at 11 volts saying dead battery, and this way I would be able to drain the 2 down to 5.5 volts each before that happened to me. Hopefully there is a simple answer for this, I am not to keen on the idea of $400.00 to purchase the only one I found on the net.

I am building a 2000W inverter powered by a car battery at 200A and I am unsure what to look at to find how many MOSFET's I need. Do I look at continuous current (in Amps) or power dissipation(in watts)? If it's power dissipation might you be able to suggest a MOSFET with a high power dissipation that is under a continuous current rating of 75A?

1000 watt inverter to power treadmill motor and controller?

I was planning to use a treadmill motor and controller that I found in the trash on a bicycle trailer to power it,geared down for slow speed with sprockets,since the motor is rated at 130 volts dc there was no way I was going to put that many batteries in there.so for fun I hooked it up to a 1000 w inverter and a single 12 v battery and it runs great. does anybody see any unforeseen disasters,not including a long visit to the hospital. has anybody tried this yet and not failed miserably ? ? I'm also curious on run time under load and with about 200 amp hrs @ 12v. any other nut jobs out there ?

Need a 30 watt "LASER"

Looking for an inexpensive laser cutting/engraving system. I will be taking it apart and  customizing it to fit onto another machine.  Currently, we have a rotating blade to cut sheets of material, but this set-up causes many issues.  A contact free solution would be best.  So I want to mount the laser carriage above the cutting area; the rest of the laser parts will be contained in a metal cabinet under the machine.  The laser would need to be able to travel 12-16 inches in 1-2 seconds and cut through 1-5 mil paper/poly material. I have a fair amount of experience with lasers, I have know how to sight them in and understand the technology.  We currently have 45, 100 and 400 watt galvo head lasers, as well as a 90 watt XY laser set-up. So, what website would you direct me to, to purchase an inexpensive laser system?

I am working on an inverter that will be run off a car battery. It will use a ne556 timer to drive the 2n3055 transistors (50-60Hz) I will have in parallel leading to my centre tapped step up transformer which will be a modified microwave oven transformer. My car battery is a 12V 65Ah battery that I will intend to draw about 200Amps from, the car battery will only be run through the transistor and transformer part of the circuit, the driver I will run off a much lesser power source.  Altogether I will be using 50 2n3055 transistors, two groups of 25 for either side of the transformer this will have a potential of 2875 Watts. How can I parallel these transistors to balance them to avoid cascade failure?

Why do I get a voltage drop from my solar panels....? Answered

I am building my own solar panels and installing them as I go. So far I have mounted three 70 watt panels. I have a twenty amp controller and a 1500 watt pure sine wave inverter. With the array switched on and connected to the batteries (8 x12 volt 134AH) via the controller everything seems fine with a steady 13 -14 volt charge coming through. But when I connect the inverter the PV volts drop to around six and seven volts....The batteries are wired in parrale but not directly to each other. Instead I connected them to a buss bar hoping for equel drain and charge... I then connected the wires from controller and inverter to the bars... I thought this may have been the problem so swapped them all around having the controller wires to the battteries, then the inverter directly to the batteries... It made no difference and the voltages remained the same....I am hoping now that the reason maybe that I do not have enough panels to power the system and as I add more panels the voltage will rise...... l Any thoughts on this will be very welcome.....?

How powerful of a motor do you need to run an alternator? Answered

From questions I have read and step by step’s I have read a question came to my mind. How powerful of a motor do you need to run an alternator? I checked the Delco Remy alternator series from 10SI in 37 Amps, to the 40SI durable brushless model, in 240, 275, and 300 Amps. All their performance charts show rpm’s at the alternator not the motor. The pulley on the crankshaft is considerably larger than the pulley on the alternator, giving you more rpm’s at the alternator than at the motor. All their performance charts show rpm’s from 1200 to 8000 rpm’s. All their performance charts show at 3000 rpm’s you get 13/16ths of max power. The last 5000 rpm’s only gaining 3/16ths of power. The thing is none of the performance charts say the horsepower to drive the alternator. I decided to approach the problem from a different direction Typical alternator efficiencies are in the 54%-60% range. Brushless alternator efficiencies are in the 60% 70% range. A typical 12v 60 Amp alternator produces 720 watts at 55% efficiency. It needs just 1310 watts to drive it or a little under two horsepower at 1492 watts. This does not account for mechanical efficiency of connecting the alternator to the motor. With this in mind a three horsepower motor should drive a 12v 60 Amp alternator. This is just an educated guess but I would like a horsepower chart. 720 watts would do well at charging a battery bank while you sleep; however I could not run my microwave and charge batteries at the same time.

Hello I have built this circuit, it can drive cfl's up to 15w, how do i modify it so that it can drive cfl's up to 25w?  I am using D313 for his project as the D882 didn't gave me the results i needed. Using 12v battery. Running a fog machine and LEDs from battery pack

So I have this idea that will require a fog machine, some LED's, and a switch to turn them both on at the same time. The mechanical issues I have figured out, I just need a little help with the electronics. I plan to have this rig be mobile, as in backpack mounted, and I have no problem carrying a 12 volt battery on my back to accomplish this task. I need help on the specific electronics required in order to rig it together. To the best of my understanding, I need a 12 volt battery, an inverter/power outlet, and POSSIBLY a microcontroller, but I'd like to avoid the later at all costs, haha. Fog machine I intend to use would be 400 watt since it seems to be the most viable. If I can swing a KW one that would be awesome. And the LEDs would be either red or blue. I'd like a switch in the set up to allow for the fog/LEDs to be activated at the same time. Electrostatic power generator: How many Watts/Amps is it possible to put out with it ?

I would be interested in knowing if an electrostatic power generator can be used instead of an electromagnetic one inside a wind turbine for example to generate electricity. That would save the cost of magnets and copper at least .. Thanks.

12v to 120v sine inverter boosting

I have a 20 year old van. The a/c leaked and it is much cheaper to buy a 120v window unit ($140 with a 3-year walk-in exchange warranty) than to pay a shop to rebuilt the vehicle a/c. I chose a 5k BTU window unit that uses 4.1 amps running, and have a 1k watt sine wave inverter. Alone, the inverter will not start the a/c unit, but will power the fan. I confirmed a trick to start motors with an inverter. I connected an 8" bench grinder to the inverter and started it. It took a few restarts to get it up to speed. Then I started the a/c and it ran without problems. The bench grinder motor was able to supply the reactive power the a/c compressor needed to start. Both continued to run without straining the van's alternator. BUT, I don't want to travel with a running bench grinder going, that's not safe. Is there another way to supply the reactive boost that is safe to travel with? Once I get a simple stable way to run the a/c I'll work on a mount to vent the hot side. The van has sliding windows.

How can I combine my 400watt and 750watt AC/DC inverters to get 1000+ wattage out of them?

I have both inverters and they both still work.  Instead of going to buy an expensive 1000 plus watt inverter I'm looking for a simple way to just combine the two I have to handle the wattage I need them for.  I go camping a lot and I like having hot coffee in the mornings, so I need an inverter to handle a coffee pot.  I could stoke the fire and put a perculator over it or crank up the generator and plug in the pot but I'm a simple guy who likes simply plugging in the coffee pot to my truck!

Can I charge 2 deep cycle batteries with my car alternator and a 200w solar pannel kit at the same time?

I have a conversion van with 2 deep cycle batteries in paralle hooked to my . I want to add a 200w solar power set up with a 30 amp solar charge controller to charge my batteries in conjunction with the alternator. I only drive 20 minutes a day and I live in my van. Can I hook up the solar set up with the alternator set up? I also have a 2,500 watt power inverter hooked to my 2 deep cycle batteries. OK,so we've got this new LED flatscreen.There are frequent power disruptions,power failures,load shedding etc where I stay and most people have an inverter installed in their homes to run their devices during power cuts.We have an inverter in our home too but here's the problem-When the power from the mains is cut and the inverter starts to do its role,there's a small delay between this process which is hardly noticable but long enough to shut my TV off.Say if we are watching a program and suddenly there is a power failure,all the devices continue to work normally on the inverter except the T.v which has to be turned 'ON' again by using the power key in the tv remoye or on its panel.I guess it isn't good for a Tv to just shut off like that without first turning it 'OFF' with its remote.I thought if I could build an inverter that can run on a rechargeable 12 volts battery and power the T.V for a few seconds,filling in that delay I mentioned above.This way I could prevent my T.V from turning 'OFF' like that and could ensure it a greater life.I intent to add this new inverter as a backup power source until power from the main inverter begins to get utilised.I've included a schematic to give you a better understanding of what I intent to make.Thanks in advance for the time you spent on helping me out.

Hi, Recently I purchase a 5000 watt 60cycle, 24vdc to 220vac inverter (MSW) to run my off grid cottage on, when I received it it had a 2 wire out put. could I conect the inverter 220v out to a 220 to 119/220v transformer  so i  could connect it to my north american house hold elecrical panel?? This would give me the 220v split single phase (full sinewave) similar to hydro power?? Our cottage maximum wattage reguired at any one time we only reguire 12-1500 watts as we have propane stove, fridge, furnass,and hot water. Why did my WAGAN inverter blow up? Answered

Hi all, I have a WAGAN Slimline 1500 watt Inverter. I ran the output through the breaker box in the house, which is grounded. I used my car to run the system, but had another, larger battery in parallel with the car battery. The unit ran everything in the house. Microwave, fridge, lights and TVs. Had the unit going for about eight hours, then decided to give it a break and turned it off. I then experienced a very dramatic fireworks / light / smoke show. I was most upset. I know enough about electronics to figure that the inverter was toast. I put it down and forgot about it. Two years later I broke out the electronics gear and decided that I would try and fix it (the fact that another storm had passed through leaving us without light again probably had something to o with it!) I found that the MOSFET's on one side of the circuit board, all eight of them, were completely gutted. Talk about your catastrophic faliure. The MOSFETS are Fairchild FDP8770 N-Channel. There are eight other MOSFET's on the opposite side of the board, LVP640's (N Channel also). They look fine. The fans were working at the time of the fireworks. My questions are: 1) Why did it blow up  when the unit was being turned off? 2) If I start the car with the Inverter connected will it do any harm to it, and why? 3) I see three pots on the board, and am decent with a soldering iron. I want to fix it myself. Assuming I can get the parts I think it needs, Do I need to match the MOSFETs, which would mean I might have to throw away some good looking LVP640's, and how do I go about doing this? The board is set up with four transformers, and each is in series with a fuse. None of the fuses blew. I know that I'm kinda above my head in this, but I wanna try. Thanks for any help I can get!

Hi 'nstructables I'm building a hovercraft (see several tutorials on Instructables - the one with a leaf blower) and my leaf blower is corded. I don't want to buy 25 miles of Black and Decker High Power Extension Cabling so I'm planning to convert to cordless. Here's my idea: (in visual) Is there anything I need to add? Can a 10 watt solar panel giving off 20V DC directly power a flywheel motor assembly with a 12V DC motor?

I am doing a science fair project that involves a solar panel, connected to a charge controller, connected to a 12V battery, connected to a switch system that can either go to a flywheel with a 12V DC motor or straight to a DC to AC inverter which leads to light standard light bulbs. The system worked (light bulbs lit) when I connected the panel to the controller to the battery to the inverter. However, when I had the battery power the flywheel and then have the flywheel output its energy to the inverter, the inverter shut down and would not work (red alarm went off). The flywheel is producing more than 10V (starts at about 11V) for at least 30 seconds, and the inverter's low voltage shut down in 10.5 plus or minus 5 volts. So why doesn't it work? Is the inverter messed up or is the flywheel outputing AC power? Also, when I connected the solar panel to the charge controller to the flywheel, the charge controller completely shut off. Are charge controllers not able to be directly linked to motors? And if I tried to directly connect the solar panel (which has 20V) to the flywheel (with a 12V motor), without a charge controller in between, what would happen?

How to upgrade a Modified Sine UPS to Pure Sine? Answered

Hello, How could I upgrade an uninterruptible Power supply that has a Modified Sine Wave to Pure Sine wave? I got a cheap 400 watt HP UPS (for a tenner) with a modified sine wave;  then got to discover it would be much nicer that is was a Pure sine Wave ^^. The purpose is to use it as an inverter for most household items (in a solar set-up). There are videos to increase wattage but I have not found yet something informative enough to upgrade to pure sine. Thank you!

Another LED power question? Answered

I bought some LED modules with the intention of using them to replace florescent tubes in some fixtures. But I am now getting a bit confused about the power requirements because the numbers don't seem to add up. These are like the ones I bought. http://www.ebay.com/itm/221546290709?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName;=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT In the details description it says that each led is .25 watts and with 5 LED's per unit that makes the power requirements for each one at 1.25 watts. There are 20 units in a strip or module so that would mean that each module would require 25 watts.  If the LED's are ,25 watts then that makes sense since there are 100 LED's per module.  Now the thing is when I put power to them they are requiring a lots less.  With only a little AC adapter with an out put of 12 v and 2 amps or 24 watts I am able to power SIX of the modules. The power adapter does get warm after a few minutes but if I drop a module and go with 5 it is just fine. So if I go according to what they are actually using the power draw appears to be no more than 5 watts per module. Did they miscalculate? Or am I wrong in my simple math? I tried several different adapters and get the same results. A simple wall wart of 900MA can power 3 but overheats at 4.  How is it that they are figuring these at 25 watts when real life usage is saying its more like 5 watts? Its the 5 watt figure that would be more reasonable to me anyway.  I am guessing that it will take 8 modules to replace one dual tube 80 watt florescent.  If they are 25 watts each I am loosing on the power consumption because that would be 200 watts as opposed to 80. How to make Voltage regulators

I would like to know how to make a voltage regulator for an old generator. The regulator has stopped working and is hard to replace. I need an out´put of 120 volts with 15000 watts and ofcourse the 50-60 hertz. Thanx for your time

Trying to change 120 volt AC to 120 volt DC.

I have the full wave rectifier rated at 400 volts and 8 amps and need to know what kind of capacitor/ voltage regulator I might need to accomplish this. I'm powering two 100 watt lights off this. Thanks!

Wind Generator Connection

I have a generator that provides 15.5 volts and I have it to one DC 12-volt Battery. I am using a 30Amp Diode, but when I connect the cables to the battery and the output only reads 12.75. When I turn on the 750 watt inverter, It seem to overtake the battery, and takes in very little charge. The battery is new and tested. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Alex

How to change old speakers into amp.

Help! I've got a pair of JVC 5-way speakers that I'm trying to power with a Danelectro E-studio 9V headphone amp for my guitar. I've been successful using it to power some old walkman type two way speakers by just plugging into the headphone port. The JVC's will take up to 400 watts. I made a small port 1/8 plug but to no avail. Any ideas?
