Windows 8

So now that the developer preview for Windows 8 has been out for awhile, I figured I would ask and find out what everyone thinks about it.  Personally I don't like it, but I'm just curious what you think about it.  No right or wrong answer, just opinions.  :)

UTF-8 Bugs

Adding extended UTF-8 characters to Instructables works the first time, but if I edit the page, the editor replaces them all with broken characters instead. I have to manually edit all the characters back before hitting save, or the broken characters are propagated to the web. The characters that I have tried are capital omega (Ω) and the degree sign (°), and I plan to use lower-case mu (μ) in the future. Also, the bug posting form seems to be much more broken in this regard.

8-track machine

Does anyone know how to fix one? Are there specfic points that they like to break at? I got one a while ago because my old one died (heatstroke... melted things pretty bad), and it turns out, the new one is dead, too. I'm just not sure how. I'd like to try and fix it myself, especially since many electronics repair guys nowadays haven't even seen one. Of course, if you've read some of my posts, you know electricity is right behind jumping 100 feet in the air on my list of talents. It doesn't really seem to eat tapes or pinch them, and if I plug something into the phono in, I can hear it play through the attached speakers okay. The problem happens when I need to use the built in AM/FM radio (mono and stereo options!) or play a tape, at which point horrendous static happens. I think I can hear a motor spinning (maybe) when it's supposed to be playing a tape, but no useful sound comes out. The program selector also seems to be malfunctioning, and is stuck on program 4. I've got too much money sunk in my 8-track collection to make it economical to buy it all again; I'd rather get a machine working and transfer formats. I suppose I should have tested this machine before I bought it, but even if it never works again, I'm two very nice speakers and 200 feet of speaker wire ahead, so it's worth it to me. Another idea: is it possible to build one using cassette tape heads? That would be an interesting project, if a little unweildy.

Android and windows 8 Bluetooth

Well here is my problem, I have seen the many awesome things on instructables that you use an app preloaded on an SD card to control an arduino through a Bluetooth module. But I might get the new windows 8 phones and I don't see any windows 8 phone projects. I would assume that I could easily connect to the Bluetooth module and but what about the app.? Does anyone know where I could possibly find a tutorial?  Please help!

You can listen to and download the whole album for free HEREHovever Octoroc's 6-month-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppy called Ein, has had to have bladder stone surgery recently. gET RID OF wINDOWS 8?

Sorry for the damn caps-lock! My sister bought a laptop- after many years of my urgings and advise...(Compaq CQ58). Nice machine, but the damn thing is loaded with windows 8. (no, not -pro!) Normally, I would format the drive, en subsequently install pirated Windows 7! But in this environment, nothing works, and nothing is what it seems! How to format the W8 Drive? I want to get rid of the W8 installation, wipe the drive clean, and install W7! Windows 8 has, for me, in 2 occasions, proven to be a burden, incompatible with performing any real work,. Many pirated programs, always performing fine, suddenly present huge problems-like deadlines of 30 days appearing: after years of use!!! It has a mind of its own: screens popping up (unable to click it away!). I never needed 'apps' and still have no idea what they are and why I would need them! After this very negative experience, there is only 1 desire: Get rid of windows 8!!!  How???

Instructables Internship - Day 8

Wednesday: Jason's Last v_vToday was Jason's (derangedmoose7) Last Day, so we pretty much just spent all of it working on Project X. It's come along so far, it's truly quite amazing how quickly it was originally put together and how long it's taking to tweak it in order to get what we really want. I feel bad keeping Proj. X a secret from all of you, it would be awesome to tell you what we're doing every day, but It's gotta be kept a secret until it's released.By the way, Wednesday was my and Noah's salad club day. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring the muffin stuffs... AGAIN.... I'm such an idiot....Luckily, Noah brought salad stuffs and we made lunch together, again, I got to chop! I also played around with my solar panels a bit, diffusing the LEDs and getting new LEDs, too. I made one earring, but it doesn't work very well... The LEDs light, but they're not bright... at all. I'm thinking about putting a cap on there so that they charge, and then some sort of tansistor that will clamp when there isn't sufficient light, the LED's flash for a split second, grabbing everyone's attention. Sounds good, doesn't it?!Hmmm... what else? I was planning on playing with the laser cutter today, but alas, I was working on Proj. X with Jason, that that'll have to wait for tomorrow. OH! THAT'S RIGHT! I made the Badge templates Wednesday night! HOW COULD I FORGET ABOUT THOSE?well, going out to see scenic Oakland. gotta go!Cheers,-Muffinator

8 Reasons you'll rejoice when we hit $8 a gallon gasoline

This article in MarketWatch written by Chris Pummer mostly matches my opinions. My favorite is #2Here is the text:SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- For one of the nastiest substances on earth, crude oil has an amazing grip on the globe. We all know the stuff's poison, yet we're as dependent on it as our air and water supplies -- which, of course, is what oil is poisoning.Shouldn't we be technologically advanced enough here in the 21st Century to quit siphoning off the pus of the Earth? Regardless whether you believe global warming is threatening the planet's future, you must admit crude is passé. Americans should be celebrating rather than shuddering over the arrival of $4-a-gallon gasoline. We lived on cheap gas too long, failed to innovate and now face the consequences of competing for a finite resource amid fast-expanding global demand.A further price rise as in Europe to $8 a gallon -- or $200 and more to fill a large SUV's tank -- would be a catalyst for economic, political and social change of profound national and global impact. We could face an economic squeeze, but it would be the pain before the gain. The U.S. economy absorbed a tripling in gas prices in the last six years without falling into recession, at least through March. Ravenous demand from China and India could see prices further double in the next few years -- and jumpstart the overdue process of weaning ourselves off fossil fuels.Consider the world of good that would come of pricing crude oil and gasoline at levels that would strain our finances as much as they're straining international relations and the planet's long-term health: 1. RIP for the internal-combustion engineThey may contain computer chips, but the power source for today's cars is little different than that which drove the first Model T 100 years ago. That we're still harnessed to this antiquated technology is testament to Big Oil's influence in Washington and success in squelching advances in fuel efficiency and alternative energy.Given our achievement in getting a giant mainframe's computing power into a handheld device in just a few decades, we should be able to do likewise with these dirty, little rolling power plants that served us well but are overdue for the scrap heap of history.2. Economic stimulusNecessity being the mother of invention, $8 gas would trigger all manner of investment sure to lead to groundbreaking advances. Job creation wouldn't be limited to research labs; it would rapidly spill over into lucrative manufacturing jobs that could help restore America's industrial base and make us a world leader in a critical realm. The most groundbreaking discoveries might still be 25 or more years off, but we won't see massive public and corporate funding of research initiatives until escalating oil costs threaten our national security and global stability -- a time that's fast approaching. 3. Wither the Middle East's cloutThis region that's contributed little to modern civilization exercises inordinate sway over the world because of its one significant contribution -- crude extraction. Aside from ensuring Israel's security, the U.S. would have virtually no strategic or business interest in this volatile, desolate region were it not for oil -- and its radical element wouldn't be able to demonize us as the exploiters of its people. In the near term, breaking our dependence on Middle Eastern oil may well require the acceptance of drilling in the Alaskan wilderness -- with the understanding that costly environmental protections could easily be built into the price of $8 gas. 4. Deflating oil potentatesOn a similar note, Venezuela's Hugo Chavez and Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad recently gained a platform on the world stage because of their nations' sudden oil wealth. Without it, they would face the difficult task of building fair and just economies and societies on some other basis. How far would their message resonate -- and how long would they even stay in power -- if they were unable to buy off the temporary allegiance of their people with vast oil revenues? 5. Mass-transit developmentAnyone accustomed to taking mass transit to work knows the joy of a car-free commute. Yet there have been few major additions or improvements to our mass-transit systems in the last 30 years because cheap gas kept us in our cars. Confronted with $8 gas, millions of Americans would board buses, trains, ferries and bicycles and minimize the pollution, congestion and anxiety spawned by rush-hour traffic jams. More convenient routes and scheduling would accomplish that.6. An antidote to sprawlThe recent housing boom sparked further development of antiseptic, strip-mall communities in distant outlying areas. Making 100-mile-plus roundtrip commutes costlier will spur construction of more space-efficient housing closer to city centers, including cluster developments to accommodate the millions of baby boomers who will no longer need their big empty-nest suburban homes.Sure, there's plenty of land left to develop across our fruited plains, but building more housing around city and town centers will enhance the sense of community lacking in cookie-cutter developments slapped up in the hinterlands. 7. Restoration of financial disciplineFar too many Americans live beyond their means and nowhere is that more apparent than with our car payments. Enabled by eager lenders, many middle-income families carry two monthly payments of $400 or more on $20,000-plus vehicles that consume upwards of $15,000 of their annual take-home pay factoring in insurance, maintenance and gas.The sting of forking over $100 per fill-up would force all of us to look hard at how much of our precious income we blow on a transport vehicle that sits idle most of the time, and spur demand for the less-costly and more fuel-efficient small sedans and hatchbacks that Europeans have been driving for decades. 8. Easing global tensionsUnfortunately, we human beings aren't so far evolved that we won't resort to annihilating each other over energy resources. The existence of weapons of mass destruction aside, the present Iraq War could be the first of many sparked by competition for oil supplies.Steep prices will not only chill demand in the U.S., they will more importantly slow China and India's headlong rush to make the same mistakes we did in rapidly industrializing -- like selling $2,500 Tata cars to countless millions of Indians with little concern for the environmental consequences. If we succeed in developing viable energy alternatives, they could be a key export in helping us improve our balance of trade with consumer-goods producers. Additional considerationsWeaning ourselves off crude will hopefully be the crowning achievement that marks the progress of humankind in the 21st Century. With it may come development of oil-free products to replace the chemicals, pharmaceuticals, plastics, fertilizers and pesticides that now consume 16% of the world's crude-oil output and are likely culprits in fast-rising cancer rates.By its very definition, oil is crude. It's time we develop more refined energy sources and that will not happen without a cost-driven shift in demand.

I only need the circuit to do the BCD because I can use 7 segment display drivers from there. (Like a 7446 IC) Thank you.

Kit for wireless 8-button joystick?

I have an application where I need to transmit 8 buttons of information to the computer.. I figure the best way to do it would be to use an 8-button wireless joystick kit (or similar).. The software it will interface with will be an educational game on a PC, so a joystick interface is perfect and I shouldn't have to code anything specific.. Are there ready-made kits to do this? I am fairly tech savvy.. Thinking down the road, bluetooth might be a plus since I could compile the program for phones and use the wireless controller with phones as well..

Powering 6-8 Servos simultaneously?? Answered

I am currently working on a project that involves 6-8 servos, that all need to be powered at the same time. What would i use for this? The power supply on the "robot" of sorts will be a 11.1v Li-Po battery (Will update with mAh/any other info needed on the battery in a few days, i do not currently have it on me). Is there any BEC/UBEC capable of doing such a task? Could i use a combination of more than one (Three UBECS off of the same battery, all in parallel)? The servos that i am using are TowerPro MG995 Digi Speed servos. On a slightly different topic, are there any BECS/UBECS that can monitor the battery's voltage, and shut off when it drops below a certain voltage? Links would be great Thanks!

8-Shot Deconstruction Round Concept

A long time ago, I looked at Mepain's 8-Shot Deconstruction Round Revolver, and I really liked the idea, but as all concepts, it didn't shoot far. Within 20 minutes the other day I had made a small, real-triggered pistol (cock+revolve+shoot) with 8 shots, where the firing pin hits a white rod off of a snowflake connector. This was meant to be a simple revolver for people with few pieces, or who just want a fun gun. At a 45 degree angle, I won't lie, it probably gets around 10-20 feet, depending on the wear and tear of your pieces. It won't win any wars, it is a simple sidearm so you can build more piece consuming firearms. I will have pictures up shortly. Edit: I've improved range by some number, and it is now more complex and piece consuming but more reliable, and the clip design has been perfected. Advantages over guns with magazines: - Never Jams. Ever. - Slanted handle with no magazine inside. No broken pieces or clumsy mag pushers in your way. - Bullets are spread out in a circle. It is very compact, especially if you use green rods instead of whites. - Detachable wheels. This means quick reload if you have extra wheels pre-built. - Easy trigger pull. You don't need a super-powerful rubber band to make it shoot far, so the trigger pull is smooth and easy. - Super easy to build. You don't need to be an expert in k'nex to know how this works. Because it takes up less space and pieces than a magazine, and the clip design requires no rubber bands (unless you really want auto-revolver) this design could easily be perfected and expanded upon to a rifle, or high-powered weapon. It uses one black Y-connector, for the trigger, and I'm sure there's another way to do it, but this is probably the best. I can't find my camera; when I do, I will have pictures up. Probably not instructions because the thing is easy to build from pictures and a pain to take apart, but I'll be answering questions frequently when it's up and posting helpful pictures to anybody who requests it. EDIT: Pictures here> https://www.instructables.com/community/TO67PH4GQ225YK9/. Click the "i" at the top-left to get rid of those pesky annotations.

8 Watt Guitar Amp Help

I've been fartin around with electric and acoustic guitars for about the past 5 years. Only now am i getting decent (by no means good, but better, i guess...). I've been wanting to make a small amp with a small speaker for some time now.I saw this circuit the other day. Its VERY simple.http://www.aaroncake.net/circuits/amp.aspIt says to reverse the values of R1 and R3 for use as a guitar amp. there's some other stuff too. I was going to see if i could pick the stuff up at radioshack tomorrow, and maybe make it an after-work project for the week. Maybe cut up some wood and make a nice box for it. 1)Do you think these parts would be available at radioshack? and what do i need to look for if i cant find the exact IC? 2)Any special soldering tips? 3)What kind of pot do i need to add, and where, for a volume knob?4)Is there any extra things you think that needs to be added?5)Are those triangle things grounds? as in 12v negative? And what about the other wire from the guitar? 6)Also, what ohmage speaker do i need to use? What am i looking for in a speaker?7)Will 8 AA batteries do the job?8)Do i need to add like a fuse or something somewhere? Going straight into the IC...i dont know. If anyone knows of simpler or better designs, let me know. I seem to really [insert proper four-letter word here] up electronic things. I think thats all the questions i have here. To respond you can just go like..1)i think that....like that. Hopefully that will make it easier to answer all my ignorant questions.Thank you!Jason(sorry if i seem like a a$$ here. Its 1:35am, I've been looking this stuff up for two hours, and i dont feel like i got any further....)And since i dont have a suitable picture, have yourself a look at my LEGO steam engine: (after the third try of trying to post the video with unsuccessful results, i realized that i was posting the embed code int eh URL place...need....sleep....)

Art room wars in Grade 8

I shall enlighten you all with a story from my early youth (last year). I suppose I will start off by saying that the art teacher at St. Andrew Jr. School in Antigonish, NS has an unholy amount of Jenga blocks. Thousands and thousands. Don't get me wrong, Mrs. Donna Woolaver is a great art teacher, but she doesn't take her job as seriously as some might say she should. That being said, she often showed up 10-20 minutes later than the rest of my class showed up to class. A disagreement between a few of my peers would often result in a seperation of my class into two sides. A jenga block would be thrown. Everyone ducked under their desks for cover as another great Battle commenced. People running, Blocks flying everywhere. Someone screams. No one cares.Chaos, pure chaos. You'd band together with a group of friends and cover each others asses as you would try to disable someone from the other side. After all the brave ones were injured and broken, the shy and the cowardly would come out from under their desks in utter shock. And the art class would begin. We never got caught. Amen.

1/8 w resistor for 12v?

Hi, I've been trying to add a LED light for my glove box, since it didn't come with any. I bought one radio shack led with built-in 1/8w 680ohm resistors to see how it was made. I read the 1/8w resistor wouldn't work and it would burn up? Using something like 1/2w would be better. I tested it with a 9v battery and I didn't feel it getting hotter. Maybe just warm? I got some LEDs off ebay many years ago and I have no idea what their specs are. They are 3mm led bulbs. I decided to make my own by using 5 1/8w 150ohms resistors. 150 ohms are the only resistors I have on hand. With the combined resistance of 750 ohms, how much voltage is going to the LED? Will I be fine with just using 4 150 ohms resistors? Will is be dangerous to use the 1/8w resistors? I don't want a fire. Will having more resistors also help spread out the heat among the resistors? I drive 4 hours a day, so the light will only be on for that duration. Thanks

So I want to install it on an external harddisk(USB) but those mean people from microsoft won't allow me to: when I try to install windows 8 in windows from "sources/install.exe" I get an notification that I can't install windows 8 on a usb device. Does anyone know whether this notification is bypassable or not? Thanks in advance

MSIE v.8 BETA - Opinions please

Has anyone else been "bold enough" (or maybe in my case, stupid enough) to download and test the new MSIE v. 8 browser - BETA ? I am finding it hard to get configured to "contact the web" *sigh* I am about ready to uninstall it and reinstall v.7 (I only use it when absolutely necessary)

Game maker 8 Pokemon game Help

Hi I am making a pokemon game in Game maker 8 Pro Version.  I am hopeless at scripting with the GML ( with other types of scripting as well ). I can make the backgrounds but I have no Idea on how to make the battle scenes. So if you go into the grass it chooses a random number between one and 5 and if it is 1 a pidgey will apear 2 a caterpie will appear etc. etc etc.. Then Also the EXP and Health the PP and the pokemon attack moves themselves. I guess what I'm trying to ask is : Does anyone know what I should do ? Thanks  Nathan
