New Altoids Tin Design

Has anyone else noticed the new altoids tin design? They embossed the writing on the plain altoids tin, and the altoids smalls now have this weird tab on the end. What do you guys think of it?

A new class of BattleBot Altoids BattleBot

A new class of BattleBot – Altoids BattleBot After watching BattleBots on youTube I thought there had to be an easy way of enjoying the same mindless destruction but on a scale that I can accommodate in my apartment. It would also have to be simple enough to build and wire up. The Altoids BattleBot Class. Take any Altoids tin and add to it a hard wire link from a controller to the BattleBot. The controller can be another Altoids tin with a couple of switches and the battery pack. Then add weapons to the unit that can comply to a maximum 300 gram weight limit (without hard wire and controller) with a size limit of no more than 30mm from the edge of the tin and an over all maximum height of 50mm. To prevent a fire hazard (I was thinking of adding a zippo lighter), no batteries that either power the unit itself or weapons are to be placed in the BattleBot. Ive got an idea of using a small solenoid to make a flipper of some sort that could turn an opponents Altoids BattleBot turtle. Any other ideas for weapons?

A guide that must be made!

There are loads of really good instructables about things that can be done with altoids tins: survival kits, candles, stoves/ovens etc and someone should really put all the good ones into a guide so everyone can see all the fantastic ideas people have come up with! Also does anyone know if you can get altiods in the UK or if there are any similar products??

Zippo case, made from an altoids small tin

Hey I have this Altoids case, it's one of the smalls. I was thinking of what to do with it, then I looked at my zippo. I hate the case my zippo is in right now, it's old and worn and for some reason makes your hands stink if you hold it at all. So my zippo fits almost perfectly in the smalls case. But I was wondering if anyone has any good ideas of how to make it where you can light it when its in the case. I was just thinking about cutting some holes in the top with my dremel.  But I would maybe like to try to keep the original flip top aspect of the case. So some how make it flip open like a zippo maybe. Anyone think this sounds interesting. And know where I might be able to get the mechanism. Or is there a way to take it off my old case.     Thanks in advance, maybe I could make an instructable on how I do it.

Solar charger in altoids tin for 9v??

Well, if you have seen the altoids solar battery charger, and the altoids 9v usb charger, then you must have thought, "why not put em together???". Now, Im not electronics buff, but I'd be willing to bet that since the 9v charger instructable is so small, that it could be incorperated with the solar panel kit. Now, my question is, would i have to do anything ridiculous to convert the solar charger (which is ment to charge 2 AA batterys) into a 9v usb charger w/solar panel while still being inside an altoids tin. PS: I still don't know why I have this wierd fascination with altoids tin DIYs, but I do...

Altoids Phone Charger with Plantronics battery

I've read multiple Altoid phone charger Instructables and even made a few variations myself. I was thinking of making one with a plantronics battery as the power source and then a solar panel to charge it. I know nothing about plantronics batteries though. Would a simple 6v solar panel be able to charge one? If so, what size battery would be recommended or even what would be the best way to wire it. Its a simple-stupid question. I'd appreciate any help at all. Thank you!

Help with altoids tin interior lighting?

I am currently planning out an altoids tin accordion- style wallet and I want it to be lit up with led lights on the inside. I figure one light will do so it with stay simple. I was hoping to wire it in a way that it takes up little room and the light would turn on when the tin opens rather than hitting a switch or button, however, I can't for the life of me think of a way to do this. If anyone could give me ideas or blueprints for a small led circuit that is completed by opening the altoids tin housing it sits in, it would be so greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Altoids tin IR camera?

I was wondering if anyone knew of any HD webcams that could be used as a standalone camera without the computer, or ones that could be modified for such a purpose. I was going to use a standard Sony digital camera, but the key issue there is that glass elements are absorbent in the short IR range, and so kill most of the effect. One element is not that bad, but when you have the 8-10 of varying thickness in the camera's zoom lens assembly, you lose a lot of IR light.  I need the IR effect for demonstration - for example, under IR light, veins and vessels in your hand become a lot more visible, as well as the ability to perceive "heat" becomes a lot more capable. If anyone could either help point out a HD webcam that would work or help me make a standard "cure-all" lens it would be extremely helpful. By cure-all I mean the lenses you find on cameras such as disposable 35mms, ones that either don't have any glass in them or only possess one element and have a focus range of roughly a foot and a half to infinity.

Altoids Tin Can Charger

Hi, ive made an Altoids tin can charger awhile back and it chargers all my devices but my iphone 5s? Its charges my iphone 5, 4, 4s, and every ipod. What circuitry do i need to allow my charger to charge my iphone 5s? Right now i have a 5v regulator and 2x 200ohm resistors off the positive lead into the positive, data -, and data + connections. Should i add capacitors on the inputs and outputs of the 5v regulator?  The only reason i build my own chargers is because i take long trains rides and flights and i use my rc car 5000mah battery that can last me a week, i put all the circuitry in an Altoids can to hold it together.

ALtoids tin + ipod charger + fm transmitter = Awsome

OK i have been thinking about doing this for a while now and i finally did. Its an ipod chaarger and an FM transmitter fitted in a n altoids tin. The top view is the button for the fm transmitter and its green indicator LED beside it THe red button is the button for the ipod charger and its red LED beside it. THe inside pic might look like a tangled mess but i made my wire to long and i had to like jam them in to make them fit The 9V is for the ipod chager and the AAA is for the fm transmitter. Please leave some feedback i want to know how i did. Thanks

Solar Rechargeable USB Mint Tin Power Pack

I have seen many variations on this site of power/battery packs in mint tins to charge various personal electronic projects, or solar/wind powered set ups to achieve the same purpose. However, I haven't seen anything on making a solar or wind (preferably solar right now) rechargeable pack. My project I want to build is a mint tin containing rechargeable 9v or AA batteries with USB power connection. The tin would be able to power the personal electronic device from the batteries or the solar; and when not being used to power the device, the solar panels would recharge the batteries within so that it can be used even when the external power source isn't capable of producing power. I would greatly appreciate it if anybody could tell me how to achieve this, or of course preferably make an instructable that I could then follow. FYI, I am brand spanking new to all of this. This site is singularly responsible for my foray into electronics. I have experience in many other hands on craft type fields. I have been studying the projects on this site, all information that I think could help me in my new found hobby and even been salvaging and in limited amounts buying things like breadboards, and misc. electronic component kits so that when I figure out how to build the projects I have in mind (the above mentioned project first) I will have the necessary parts to do so. Although I am still trying to figure out what all the parts I have are. lol Please feel free to message me privately with any information you deem helpful or whatever. You can also message me through my private e-mail. And if any of you are in the Colorado Springs or Denver area I would love to get together and learn whatever you are willing to teach. Thank you, everyone, for taking the time to read this, and hopefully assist me. James Willard  Colorado Springs, CO

Solar USB, iPhone, Arduino Chargers

I write up a lot of guides on Instructables for various solar gadgets.  Most of the Solar USB/ iPhone/ Arduino chargers.  If anyone is interested in such things I sell them off my website, which I then use to make more projects or fund activities in my science classroom.  I have several versions of my kits available as well as all the parts to make those kits, and even premade chargers for those who don't feel the urge to make one on their own. Solar USB Charger and Kit A basic USB charger that uses rechargeable 2 AA batteries, a DC to DC boosting circuit, and a 4V solar cell.  Take the batteries out to charge, or leave it in the sun for a few days.  Then charge up your gadget when need be.  Works with most USB devices including Apple products (iPods, iPhones, iPads) as well as Arduinos.  Fits nicely into an Altoids tin. Solar iPhone Charger and Kit More or less the same as the USB charger, but instead of having a generic USB port it has a dedicated iPhone/ iPod/ iPad cable.  Which means it only works with Apple stuff.  Features 2 rechargeable AA batteries, boosting circuit, Apple Connecting Cable, and 4V solar cell.   Heavy Duty Solar USB Charger and Kit While the 4V solar cell in the other kits/ chargers fits nicely inside an Altoids in it is also quite wimpy.  I took the basic design of the Solar USB Charger and replaced the 4V solar cell with either a powerful 6V 230mA or a 5.5v 320mA solar cell.  In order to make things easier the solar cells plug into a 2.5mm jack on the side of the tin.  Meaning you can leave the solar cell at home.  The solar cells are also powerful enough to charge up a lot of gadgets directly from the sun if you have good weather.  Works with most USB gadgets, Arduinos, and Apple products. Lithium Heavy Duty Solar USB Charger and Kit Due to the fact that big gadgets (like iPads) have insanely big internal batteries I had to modify my design a bit.  The AAs in the other chargers were not powerful enough (unless you used 4 or 6 of them) to reliably charge up bigger items.  I modified the design of the Heavy Duty Kit to replace the AAs with a Lithium battery and Charge Controller.  With several battery options available, including a massive 6,600mAh one, these chargers have no problem handling the larger power needs.  On a recent plane flight a charger with a 2,000mAh Lithium battery charged up my iPhone over 80% (on airplane mode while listening to music).  Imagine what a 4400mAh or 6600mAh battery could do.  The charger/ kit can fit inside an Altoids in with the smaller batteries.  It features a powerful 5.5V 320mA solar cell and a 2.5mm jack and plug system so you can easily remove the panel.  A nice addition is the Lithium Charge Controller which has status LEDs showing when the battery is charging and when it's full.  It works with most USB gadgets, including Arduinos and Apple gear. I've used these kits with kids at my middle school, and have sold many kits to summer camps and scout groups.  They take between 20 and 45 minutes to make, and only require basic soldering skills to put together.  They all fit inside Altoids tin for cuteness factor, but can easily be put into something else.  Modifications are endless. So there you have it.  More Altoids solar thingys than you can shake a stick at.

Anyone know how to rig up a small scale belt driven axel system for an altoids racer?

Alright, so here's my idea. i have a small dc motor, i don't know specifics on it, however, my plan is to fit it, as well as a 9v battery with a on/off switch. i also have a ton of other pretty cool ideas for it. i also plan to have 2 axles with one(or both) attatched to the motor. this is where i run into snags. i thought of rubber bands for a belt driven system, but the only rubber bands i can find are too big. i tried modifying the length of the rubber band by using gorilla glue but that just made the rubber band brittle. anyone have any ideas? thanks it'd help out alot

Etching PCB boards

I know that copper is a better conductor than tin or aluminum. But one of my friends a few days ago told me that instead of etching his layout on copper, he used the bottom of an altoids tin. he said all he did was sand the bottom until there was no paint of the altoids can and then he etched his layout. (Chemical bath, toner, etc.) So my question is, Does anyone know how to etch custom layouts (toner layouts) on tin or aluminum? **I figure this could save people some money and time on some projects. :)
