Hi, I have a bunch of Altoid tins laying around and I would like to do something cool but useful. If it is not useful, well, I don't care, it mostly is all about the cool part.

The Woodworking Magazine blog had a contest for tools made out of Altoids tins and the results are pretty amazing. Besides the coolness factor of using an Altoids tin, many of the entries are great for being a good tool on its own. Check out link for the router plane, bevel gauge, drilling jig and more. The Winner of Our Altoids Tool Contest viaMake

A new class of BattleBot ââ¬â Altoids BattleBot After watching BattleBots on youTube I thought there had to be an easy way of enjoying the same mindless destruction but on a scale that I can accommodate in my apartment. It would also have to be simple enough to build and wire up. The Altoids BattleBot Class. Take any Altoids tin and add to it a hard wire link from a controller to the BattleBot. The controller can be another Altoids tin with a couple of switches and the battery pack. Then add weapons to the unit that can comply to a maximum 300 gram weight limit (without hard wire and controller) with a size limit of no more than 30mm from the edge of the tin and an over all maximum height of 50mm. To prevent a fire hazard (I was thinking of adding a zippo lighter), no batteries that either power the unit itself or weapons are to be placed in the BattleBot. Ive got an idea of using a small solenoid to make a flipper of some sort that could turn an opponents Altoids BattleBot turtle. Any other ideas for weapons?

I am making an Altoids USB charger with a 3.7v 2000 mAh battery. The project will have a 2.5 female connector. Would it be safe to charge it with a 5v usb to 2.5 cable?

There are loads of really good instructables about things that can be done with altoids tins: survival kits, candles, stoves/ovens etc and someone should really put all the good ones into a guide so everyone can see all the fantastic ideas people have come up with! Also does anyone know if you can get altiods in the UK or if there are any similar products??

I'm wanting to enter one of the contests, I don't have an Altoids tin at the moment, and I'll be pushing it to get it done in time. If anyone has the dimensions handy, that'd be great. Thank you.

I'm about to assemble a DB-9 to USB controller converter so I can play a few old Sega Genesis games again with my Genesis controller. I've decided that I want to try housing it in an Altoids tin, but I'm worried about creating a short.

Im making a spy kit out of an altoids tin, and I have some things so far, but i have a lot of extra space so I figured I would ask you guys what else I should put in it. Currently, I have 1 mini flashlight, 3 duct tape tabs(ducttape folded over on its self), 3 rubber bands, 3 exacto knife blades, 1 dollar coin, 1 bandage, 1 alcohol cleaning pad.

To save me going through the trial and error stage (I can only eat so many Altoids), what is the best way to drill a matrix of neat 5mm holes in the lid of an Altoids tin? Centres will be 12.5mm (1/2") so reasonable gap between. How do you clamp and support the tin without bending it? What drill speed do you use? Centre-punch first? Drill pilot holes? Drill from the inside or outside? I have a bench drill and usual workshop stuff available.

I've been searching for a new project since my last, which i have finally finished for good. I was hoping to work with some altoids tins, as I have about twenty of the things taking up space in my room. After some research, I noted that the current altoids projects haven't really changed in about a year, so, if you've got an idea, i'm all for it. Please, feel free for any suggestions. Just don't talk like you drunken a thousand long-island iced-teas.

Hey I have this Altoids case, it's one of the smalls. I was thinking of what to do with it, then I looked at my zippo. I hate the case my zippo is in right now, it's old and worn and for some reason makes your hands stink if you hold it at all. So my zippo fits almost perfectly in the smalls case. But I was wondering if anyone has any good ideas of how to make it where you can light it when its in the case. I was just thinking about cutting some holes in the top with my dremel. But I would maybe like to try to keep the original flip top aspect of the case. So some how make it flip open like a zippo maybe. Anyone think this sounds interesting. And know where I might be able to get the mechanism. Or is there a way to take it off my old case. Thanks in advance, maybe I could make an instructable on how I do it.

I would like to make an altoids tin iPod charger. I finally got my hands on a computer, and tore it apart only to find these kinds of USB ports. Does anyone know if it is possible to take it off of the circuit board (by breaking the soldering) and still have it work? I still have the cord that connected it to the motherboard. Please tell me how I can accomplish a project like this. I do not know how to solder, but I would not mind learning. Thank you!

Well, if you have seen the altoids solar battery charger, and the altoids 9v usb charger, then you must have thought, "why not put em together???". Now, Im not electronics buff, but I'd be willing to bet that since the 9v charger instructable is so small, that it could be incorperated with the solar panel kit. Now, my question is, would i have to do anything ridiculous to convert the solar charger (which is ment to charge 2 AA batterys) into a 9v usb charger w/solar panel while still being inside an altoids tin. PS: I still don't know why I have this wierd fascination with altoids tin DIYs, but I do...

Why does the color near somebody's icon (that shows the number of instructables that they have posted) vary? I wonder this because mine used to be red, then I posted about 5 more instructables and it changed to orange. does it have to do with the number posted? (like if you post 5-10 it is green, 11-15 it is orange, so on?)
