So apparently...

After taking a devastating kick to the throat CO my little nephew (yeah, he's gonna be quite the Steven Seagal), my voice pitch has increased about an octave and my NY accent is totally gone (not that I'm going to miss it). My sister says it's temporary, but I can only hope. This happened Thursday of last week, and there's barely any improvement. If anyone else has taken a blow like this, please tell me about your experiences and the result. Thanks, DrWeird

What the hell is this "How to dodge a draft". This is complete BS. What does this site need to get into the political mainstream too. I don't care who this site supporters for president and don't really care. But this crap has no place in here at all. If you think it does well, So long and have fun because people like me that just want to get away from all the BS will find some other place.

My computer science teacher was wanting to buy a set of robots. the boe-bot and the scribbler bot. All of us are really skilled in java. could they be programmed with that? He's more or less appointed me as his adviser to this venture, and i'd like to hear frome someone who's had some experience I'm also an arduino freak and i was wondering if python could have anything to do with that.

Starting an instructable.

There is only one thing that I genuinely hate about this website. There is NO simple "start an instructable" button / link / establishment point - in ones profile. Anywhere. It just frustrates me no end - playing all these linking / searching / nebulous / vague / idiotic BS to try and start publishing another one. And it's such a blatant omission.

Connecting Wiimote to Bluetooth - Trouble with Bluesoleil

I'm trying to connect the wiimote to my bluetooth adapter. Bluesoleil gets to the connect human interface and runs for 10 minutes then freezes. I've uninstalled and installed the Bs program several times and it doesn't seem to help. Should the connection take a long time and how do you get and install the wiimote driver ? Thanks for any and all help.

The Validity of Astrology

So today in one of my classes we talked about the practice of astrology and how it supposably affects us. My teacher didn't tell us to go and relie on horoscopes on how to live our days. I was just wanting to hear some other opinions on it. Personally i'm still sort of reluctant to accept it, not sure why but... Just ya know post your opinions on whether you think this really old practice is BS or is worth taking a look at.

How to block users and trolls on instructables? Answered

Recently I have had an apparent troll (I will not say who) post BS on many of my comments and answers, and obviously following me around here just to post 'mean' stuff to stir me up, and frankly after some time I am getting a little annoyed with it, since it is spamming my email with useless and inappropriate crap. After searching for a few minutes for an option, I did not come across any obvious "block" button, so I guess I am missing something. Also, will blocking users only make it so I do not see their replies, or will it disable the "reply" button entirely for them? Thank you in advance.

Build a warming/cooling box for maintaining temperature range year-round

Hi all, I need to build a box about 75cm wide, 50cm tall, 50 cm deep, that will maintain a temperature range of 20-30 degrees C (about 68-86 F) in ambient temperatures of 0-35 C (32-95 F).  What are my best options for heating and cooling? For temperature regulation I imagine I'll be using an aquarium thermostat for the heating end of things.  What would be best for cooling? I am imagining a plywood frame with a plastic tray insert, covered with styrofoam sheets. Pretty simple stuff. It will probably hinge open on the front face.  I'll be keeping fermenting and sprouting foods in it. thanks for any help and ideas! -bs

What I truly hate about the holiday season.

It's when the new shows start telling me how much to tip everyone. The serious "advice" from these people ranges anywhere for a day's pay to a month's salary for everyone from the garbage man (there are four on the trucks in my neighborhood, does each receive $100?) to each person where I get my haircut, not just the barber, EVERYONE. The suggested tips run up into the thousands of dollars. Hey Christmas, go to hell! And let's not forget the office gift exchange, we are strongly encouraged to participate, since they can't make it mandatory, to bring a new $10 gift. Last year I hand made something and caught a firestorm of crap for it. This year, being my last, I bought a $10 gift and gave it to Toys for Tots. Materialistic, self centered BS that's the holiday spirit.

Building an electric bike, how can I calculate my top speed and battery life?

I'm in the process of building an electric bike to commute back and forth to school, as well to the store. I plan to mount the motor on a rack above my rear wheel, and re-rout the chain from the peddles to the motor above. I've been looking at this (http://www.monsterscooterparts.com/24vo500wamow1.html) motor, and I hope to power it with this (http://www.monsterscooterparts.com/12-volt-yt12b-bs-scooter-motorcycle-battery.html) battery (will be using two of these). How to I calculate the battery life using this motor, and is there any way I can calculate the max speed? The bike is predicted to weigh aprox 50 pounds, i'm about 160 plus 20-30 pounds of books and the like in my pack. Thanks in advance!

How to over- power an led with arduino ? Answered

Is there a way to draw max (or even more than max) current to a LED with arduino as the controller ?  The LED is a high power LED that use a 12V source. I used a power MOSFET IRF620 as the driver. My application is that I flash the LED on and off in a very short amount of time (strobe light). (the on time for the LED estimate is about 20-50ms). So without modify anything, the light give out is quite dim. I want the LED to draw out much more current in that short amount of time to enhance the brightness.  IS it possible to do that ? Yes, I am aware that doing so might shorten the lifespan of the LED and I will add a transistor in between the arduino and the power MOSFET just for an extra layer of protection.  EDIT: This is the spec sheet that they sent me. Most of them i think are pretty bs.  https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwYTLuvu7CiTS0RaTEZnRU9hQ3M/view?usp=sharing

Rant numero # 2

Well after seeing the same commercial like 3 times in a row (don't ask, my cable company is dumb as hell) I got a little fed up. These commercials about donating money to save the animals, save the african children that happened because lack of control. Face it people, these people only want your money, why do you think there's so many different commercials and ads from so many different companies/organizations? We'll start with the money thing. They tell you it only costs a dollar a day or some silmilar bullcrap so you can save ONE child. Here's the catch, they usually tell you that 40 cents of each dollar or the such will be sent to africa/said child right? Well that 60 cents they keep probably can be safely said that it adds up to a profit, yes? Sad.... If I want to help a child out in africa, I'll put $20 or however much of their money (Go to a exchange building people!) in an envelope and mail it down to them africans, I'm not going to pay someone 60% of the total donation just to take it down there. That's BS, why are people so screwed up? But hey, some people are probably thinking, why would we help africans right? That's BS eh? Well yes and no. While helping out your fellow humans, it's about the nicest thing you can do and I expect you to do it, there is a point. There is a whole nation, and we're supposed to just lift them off the ground and feed them, clothe them and give them money. Why are there so many people that there isn't enough food, shelter, or said clothing in the first place? Lack of self control obviously and they need to realise that you can't just have 10 kids these days and it's all cool, due to the cost of things these days (or at least that's what the government wants you to think). It wasn't me that made the african make so many kids, why should I donate? There are many looks and points of views that can be taken and I guess it's the fact that everyone looks at things differently in some way that these organizations take advantage of that. I could be wrong, but hell, who wants to argue me?

Referral/GTP sites

Before anyone freaks out and starts screaming SPAM (lol) I am not posting links to my account on a referral site. To be honest I find it extremely annoying when people do. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with referral/GTP (get paid to) site.  Basically they pay you to complete surveys and basically buy your personal information, and you earn more money for getting other people to join under you. I started using one called FusionCash and got through a few offers by using bs information. Then I realized that they have a minimum payout of 25$ (they wont send you a check or paypal until you have 25$ in your account on their site), 15$ of which must be from completing "offers", on top of this your account on their website resets itself every 90 day (should have read the fine print, lol) I found this system kinda fishy and utterly ridiculous. Then I started looking into other sites. I found CashLagoon which has no minimum payout and works through paypal as well as check (win!). The other site I found was CashCrate which pays you by check in mail but has a minimum payout of 10$. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations about which sites to use and if there are any legitimate ones that are worth my time. (DON'T POST REFERRALS) ;-) Dan

Charger circuit

Hey there, I'm planning to build a portable stereo speaker box thingy (you know what I mean). In order to power the 2x10W amplifier I want to use a 7.2V 1400mAh battery pack from an old RC car. As the housing of the box will be sealed I want to implement a mechanism to charge the pack. For this I wanted to achieve 3 things: -If the Power-Switch is turned on, the amp should be powered from the power line -If the Charge-Switch is turned on, the battery pack should be charged -If both of the switches are turned on, the amp should receive power from the power line while the battery pack is being charged. I have thought of the following cabling (see attached picture for a schematic) The blue box is the amplifier, the green box the battery pack and the orange connectors are tamiya connectors (the ones for RC cars) The first switch (marked in green) is a normal DPST switch which establishes the connection with the power line as well as the connection with the battery The second switch is a SPDT switch and activates either the connection between the battery and the amp or the connection between the power line and the battery. Will this work the way I think it will or does this configuration any faults? If the latter, what can I do I have to change? I'm actually really new to electronics, this if my first project so forgive me, if this setup is actually BS Cheers and sorry for the long post ^^'

PRESIDENT & GOVERNMENT

OK, I've been a sneaky DIY for a while now, just stealing idea's but not really contributing. Bummer. In my defense I'm currently deployed to Iraq OIF 07-09. Question is what would YOU do as President? How would you help the American people? Background, I'm a gemini, and hope i don't get so out of hand i get banned. (Please keep your input on the U.S. only) Ok, so here i go..... If I was Pres I would round up certain people with certain things (say bums, or the sick and diseased) and "off" them. I would stop competition in consumer goods (ie, why sell energy saving light bulbs, and the crappy ones as well) I would force companies to comply to a higher standard for the greater good.<---this part IS communistic, but only for consumer goods that go to market. If President, I would have large meetings INHOUSE, i would not leave my country to "talk" to other countries, I have a phone, or a VP/VIP i could send. These meetings would gather expert people, in whatever field... for instance the internet, and would make it run flawlessly..... no dead links, no BS info, mmmmm sounds good. I would make a government website, FOR THE PEOPLE, (created by the best web guru's, government guarenteed secure) and it would more or less be an online census, it would be your forced load page.... you couldnt have fun on the web without answering a few questions, about anything. of course personal info, CIA FBI stuff, but mainly for an immediate update as to what the people want, when they want it, and how they expect it done......man ive so soo much more... thats all for now. Call me crazy, i dont care....... what would you do?

So, EMF blocking Stickers, Pendants or Death-Crystals? Answered

Uh, how to start with this one... Local health store started carrying the latest line of emf blocking stickers and pendants. At first I thought good grief, if people are that gullible as to not look into the science behind they perhaps deserve to have there money parted from them. Several weeks later though, a symposium was booked in the local convention hall. I was surprised to learn how many people actually went to this, and were indeed parted with a fair chunk of change. If you look into to it there are numerous if not hundreds of these anti-emf scams abound on the internet all claiming only theirs works... That alone would send my spidey senses tingling. I really don't want to get in to the science behind why this is a scam, and would appreciate answers from people who know what they are talking about rather then those have been duped. Moving on... I am afraid the owner of the health store is going to get slammed on this one eventually. Normally I would say the owner of the store has a good head on her shoulders with an excellent BS sensor. Not so much, this time around. Guess my question would be how to inform her of why its a scam with out her eyes rolling into the back of her head. "Had a friend go the symposium for kicks, "she has a doctorate in bio-engineering, health science and is pursing her latest degree in occupation health sciences." To her shock and delight it was simple for her to see through the scam, but she had to admit his did provide a technical sounding argument, mixing truth with techno babble, that perhaps someone with an understanding of only layman’s terms could be persuaded by. Oh, what to do...

Temporary Tent life - Where in Hesperia/Apple Valley Ca can this be done?

Hi folks, I came across a similar question on this site, but the answers were for a different state so I hope this is ok. Me, my mom and a couple others (and pets) have been in a motel for nearly a month and it's way too expensive (running over the $5000 a month mark and this is as cheap as it comes for all of us). 3 rooms. Contemplating on living in a tent, preferably in the wilds somewhere here in the high desert (Hesperia or Apple Valley CA). Some of us may go to the camp grounds (narrows), but those of us with the kitty cats prefer to go out into the desert if possible. Mind you, this is only temporary (as long as we can hold out). If you guys out there know of a good spot that's unclaimed (and legal?? is there such a thing?) please let me know :)  Wilds would be free, however we still have access to toiletry/shower through friends. Long story short, the family was scammed by a realty company and now we're out of our house. To stay afloat, we tried AmericanHomes4Rent to get a temporary rental, but that didn't work out, so we're in the hotel. In fact, a house was readily available for us to rent, application OKd, but at the last second the above company said that there was a glitch in their system and the house was not available for rent.  (BS.. we went to see the place, rental sign, lock box etc.. RENTLY has a let yourself in service which we used to check it out). This has to be voodoo or something... I dunno... bad luck one thing after another. The plan is to save enough money to convince one of these rental companies to let us in  (3 or 4 months rent in advance). That worked for several folks I know, so hope to try the same :) PS - A shelter is out of the question. Not only are they full (went to inquire at the one up here), some of the folks there were wielding pocket knives and someone got into a fight.  Yikes. No way!  Tent it is!!!

Instructables bugs and issues? Is it just me? Answered

Is it just me, or has their been a spike in the number of spam BS about "age defying creme"  and "unique way to get muscles", etc etc, etc. on the question page? At times I would see like 3-7 random posts like that, and have gone through and flagged them all as spam. Sure enough they have disappeared later that day.  Currently, there are 5 SPAM POSTS I have found in nearly consecutive order! (I did not link these to avoid getting flaged as spam myself, and I flagged all of them already so they may have rotted already. Who knows.) https://www.instructables.com/answers/httptestoxlreviewnetalpha-limit-/ https://www.instructables.com/answers/Unique-Way-to-Get-Muscles/ https://www.instructables.com/answers/weightloss-pills-only-likely-to-your-physician/ https://www.instructables.com/answers/concentrating-on-treating-them-within-your-skin/ https://www.instructables.com/answers/Important-Skin-Advantages-Of-Aloe-Vera-Gel/ That's just ridiculous! Also, recently, instructables decided to stop sending me email updates on comments on my instructables, and I have checked my settings for emails from instructables, as well as spam. I am not sure if the problem still persists, but I have had to actually load up my previos question on my DSL not working properly to see answers. (I suspected something was up because after a day, no email was received that I got answers. I knew that was not likely. Sure enough when I went to some of my published 'ables, I saw comments that I did not receive as email updates! Wats up with dat?) If anyone else is having similar issues, I will probably find way to file bug report with this info. My guess is that the security for making new accounts is compromised (like captchas not working properly) and that the 'ables robot server is not working properly. No clue. What I do know is that I will be refreshing this page periodically to see new replies to test if emails work or not. I will post in the comments if they do.

How does the num. of turns & voltage on the primary translate to an ideal voltage on the secondary?

In electronics, one of the things that has been the most confusing to me is the physics behind transformers. I have learned of that stupid formula a while back, where the ratio of turns is proportional to the voltage ratio and inversely proportional to the current, however, I know from reality that it is no where near that straight forward. As far as I can tell, it is a bunch of BS. Anyway, I want to know what the REAL story is, how the AC current going through the transformer is related to the magnetic flux through the core, and how that relates to the output of the secondary. What seems counterintuitive to me is that more windings on the primary should yield to a stronger magnetic field in the core for a given current, which means for magnetic flux (???) which seems like it should yield to more induced current in the secondary. Is the answer related to inductive reactance (more turns = more inductance = more inductive reactance = higher impedance at a given sinusoidal freq. = less current per unit of voltage?) Note: If you have a good physics and calc background and understand it to heart, pls do explain. However, I am currently only nearing the end of calc 2 w/ absolutely no formal education in physics, so I may have some difficulty with wank terms and vocab. (a.k.a. do not try to show off how many terms you know attempting to explain things in the most complicated and technical way possible.) Also, any good tutorials online that go into depth into the topic? ----------------------------------- The reason I want to know these things is that I wasn't to build a good 6A 0-+/-15V dual isolated channel linear power supply with many transformer tabs so I can keep the voltage drop on the pass elements as low as possible at variable output's so huge $$$ heatsinks are not necessary due to lower low power dissipation. (I have mostly figured out the LPS circuitry, but have not found a suitable Xformer online.) I can get the laminated magnetic cores needed relatively cheaply, however if I have to do some custom windings, I want to make sure I do not choose the wrong number of windings for the core. (obviously one turn on the secondary and 5 turns on the primary will pop a breaker @ 60Hz... )

Gaining free game credits with Jackpot Credit Device?!? (Hack or Smokin Crack?)

I was surfing the web and came across these cheating 'devices.' The claim is that somehow these black boxes manipulate the system into giving additional free credits as you're feeding the machine and/or causing the machine to more likely pay out. I am 99.5% sure this is total BS. Still the chance to play TimeCrisis 3 for hours and hours at a deep discount sounds awesome. ;-)Here is the descriptions on the website: Third and Fourth Items downThis device was developed through years of research on machines and by beta testers. It has potential to jackpot or give credits in gambling machines and fruit machines. When put in a small box and powered by 1 or 2 (9VDC) batteries, it will fit in your pocket or up your sleeve. This unit can be used as a contact induction device (soundless arc system) or EMP induction device via magnetic induction pulses which are also soundless. This device uses in excess of 1000volts so use caution. There are two ways to use this device in either mode: as you are inserting coins, adding credits or adding money to the machine you activate the device and it will cause the credits to jump higher. The other way to use the device is to use it while you are playing and you have great odds of hitting a jackpot or winning. Kit includes all parts to build a complete unit to operate in either mode. The completed kit can be used in two modes: vacuum arc induction or magnetic induction coil mode. The device is so small you will need to coat it with epoxy and electrical tape, as a box would take up too much space. It is powered by one 9v battery, it will fit in your pocket, up your sleeve or in the palm of your hand. This unit is a contact induction device (soundless arc system) or can be converted into an EMP induction device via magnetic induction pulses which are also soundless and generated by connecting a small pinwheel coil to the output probes. This device generates around 500volts so use caution. There are two ways to use this device: as you are inserting coins, adding credits or adding money to the machine, you activate the device and it will cause the credits to jump. The other way to use the device is to activate it while you are playing and you have great odds of hitting a jackpot or winning. Kit includes all parts to build one complete unit, epoxy and tape not included.
