building an antiquated house ?Cost?

New bldg materials outgas.  Old bldgs may have mold, outdated wiring, etc. What would it cost to build old school, but with some of the newer tech?  Get the best of both worlds. Perhaps build smaller than the McMansions typical of todays builders.

Build Counter

An additional feature that I would like to see would be a build counter. I know you can favourite things, but a lot of people dont actually get round to building these things so I'd like to be able to see how many people have actually built the item. For example, I built a lightbox table from one of the links; I left him comments telling him I built one, but I think it would be a cool feature if I could look at an instructable and see how many people have built it. You could even link to a gallery where people photos of their build.

Build Yacht

Hi, my friends and I want to build a small yacht. We are beginners, so we dont have previous experiences in building such things. I just graduated with Mechanical Engineering degree from Polytechnic University of New York and my other friend is a handy man and he had experiences in fixing boats and yachts, another friend has experience in Mechanical Engineering design industry, he graduated couple years ago. We want to build it from scrap materials, we are thinking to get an old boat or yacht now and use that material to build our. I found this website may be you have an opinion on this web site. We are looking for any good advises for the beginners, any good literature on that topic. Another big problem we dont know where to build it. We are welcome enthusiasts like we are specially people who have some place to build it in our area (NYC, Long Island, New Jersey.)

Every last Friday of the month is Build Day here at the office. Sometimes we all get bogged down with emails and spreadsheets and bugs and stuff, so it can be kinda hard to make something. Today I'm gonna spray paint a new robot on the door a la Amanda: The yellow might have to wait- I cant find it! I did find this great orange acrylic color so maybe I'll use that! update: RANDY HAD YELLOW ACRYLIC!

Vivarium Wireing Help..

Hi im building a vivarium for my fat-tail geckos the standerd 1s boar me so i wont something diffrent so i need some help. The viv i have no problems with im already in the middle of the build its just the electrics i cant do. i have an idea it just seeing if it can be done or something neater or similer . At the minut im useing a plastic vivarium with items (3), (5), (6). But item (5) the manul timer is being use instead of item (2) The Microclimate day/night dimming Thermostat as the manual timer is a cheaper option and using it to turn the mat on and off to regulate the temp...... So what im trying to do is have Some thing like item (1) useing this as the main controller . This is what im after :Item (1),(2),(3)(4),(6) in 1 neat package well to run off 1 plug ... I was going to use a fan controller (pc) as this already has 3-5 small neat temp sencers and reads temps and the fan controller disply would looks cool and small and its 12v like the LCD lights ..and was going to use the the fan controller knobs to control White/Blue LCD Lights to turn then on and off ie:White for day and Blue for the night .and 1 of the other control knobs as my be a dimmer switch for the heat mat ...I think ive put that as id like it .. ( Sorry im dyslexics if spelling and dosent make sence in place's) Thanks hope some 1 can help . Oh im rubbish with electrics and forgot to mention that my viv is getting wall mounted as the need for 1 plug.

Build Night Recap.

It's very hot here today in Instructables World HQ, so, for fear that too much thinking may melt my brain, I'll keep the build night recap short and sweet. Below are the picture from a very Robot-licious Build Night. Also! This Sunday in Dolores Park at 2 a group of people will be constructing a massive robot sculpture. Be there or be analog! (A special thanks goes out to all of you on the webcam telling me to hit myself. )

LED Build Night at RevAmp

After having a huge success at our first Build Night at RevAmp and having many people turn up with great projects. The best out of which we found to be LED costumes as many people worked on it. We had two build nights The first day we had projects like LED Cube, LED lamps, LED flashers... and the next day we came up with an idea of making LED costumes and brought arduino into the  picture. The costumes were Bluetooth controlled and we later had a special android app developed to control the led. We had made 3 LED costumes at the end of the day. And we also practiced some cool led dance moves as the LEDs looked quite cool in the dark. After 2 days we all learnt new things and had fun with the LEDs.

Instructables Build Nights!

Instructables is pleased to present the first in a new series of Thursday Build Nights here at our San Francisco HQ!These are small-group sessions focused on specific projects - you MUST RSVP to attend, as we can only handle a certain number of participants. Registrations will be handled on a first-come basis. We're starting with a bit of craft/tech crossover, and plan to run sessions on a variety of topics.October 2: Intro to Chain Mail with SpiderOctober 23: Halloween open build night.See the descriptions below for details, including things to bring and/or materials fees. To sign up for one of the sessions, simply private message Christy with your name, email, and phone number. I'll teach 4-in-1 because it's the most widely useful chainmail weave. Students can use this same weave to make jewelry, armor, sculpture, lampshades, iPod cozies, etc... The materials fee is $10, which covers copper jump rings and clasp, plus the loan of appropriate pliers. I'll bring other goodies for people to look at, and I'm happy to answer any and all chainmail-ish questions.Additional kits and tools will be available for purchase after class.October 23: Halloween Costume & Decoration Open Build NightLimit: none, but please RSVPMaterials: Bring your own!Time: 6pm-9pmWe'll be working on our Halloween costumes and decorations -- bring your work-in-progress along and join the fun! It's always easier to get excited about your project when you're working with a group. Please RSVP so we know how much snack food to acquire, and how much of the office to clean up. We'll kick you out at 9pm, or when the last Instructables staff member has to head home.

OK that's it. What do you want me to build?

I'm getting a knex bucket from my friend cheap tomarrow (or maybe today if the forum shows up late like always...) and so I'll have enough pieces to fufil most requests. I still have my "will replicate any gun" thread going so check that out if you want me to make a certain gun. I just really need to build something. I'm also itching for making some new innovative design so I need ideas. Tell me exactly what kind of gun you want (shotgun, sniper, sidearm?) and I'll see what I can do. I also want to get more videos up on youtube. (masterofthelines -check me out later on this summer to see what I'm up to. Hey maybe you'll eventually meet who I am under "TheDunkis") So yeah tell me any details but for the love of god IF IT INCLUDES ANYTHING ABOUT FULL AUTO I'M JUST GOING TO FLAT OUT IGNORE YOUR POST AND POSIBLY YOU FOR THE REST OF MY TOPIC. OK just had to get that out of the way. And I doubt I'll think of any new semi auto ideas but feel free to mention any other ideas you think might be possible. Oh yeah tell me does anyone right now feel interested in another M4 that both looks good and has a good working magazine and rail system? I made one before but ran out of pieces so I might rebuild it again. I found out most guns here can either look good and not be the best or they can work awesomely...and not look the best. I know most of my guns aren't the greatest quality and that's why I'm trying to improve and at least mine worked for the most part. ~TheDunkis~

Are your eyes better than mine?

I've been watching and re-watching this video of a kite flying (I can't make Vimeo embed). It's based on the tetrahedral kite, a tried and tested design.  In my experience, kites like this have amazing stability and huge amounts of lift.  This thing should have needed a serious effort to restrain. But it only gets a few feet off the ground, and then only just. The huge banner will have something to do with it, but not a lot. I've squinted at the video of it in flight, and I may be imagining it, but are a lot of the triangular cells the wrong way round, contributing no lift at all, just a lot of drag? Can you have a look, and see if you can work it out?

Kitewife, she says YES!

Many years ago, my father rallied a Mini.Twenty-three years ago, I learned to drive in a Mini.Twenty-two years ago, I had my first crash in a Mini.I courted Kitewife in a Mini. Now, after literally years of subtle hints, requests and outright begging, Kitewife has agreed that I can have another Mini. A proper one, not a BMW.OK, this isn't going to be instant, probably months away, but I am uber-excited about it, so I thought I'd come a and brag about it.All I've got to do first is fix up the Megane to a saleable state - replace the spoiler, the wing mirror, buff out the scratches, pull out the dent in the door, then sell it, then raise about a grand extra ...... ah, what the heck, she said yes!

First project, Need help with materials selection :)

Hey everyone! This is my first post here and I hope someone can give me a hand, or I can contribute in the future.  For now I need some expert opinions.  For a project in school me and my partner came up with the idea of making our own air filtering baby canopy.  I made a drawing of what I imagine it would look like.  I just for the life of me can't come up with an idea to make the frame out of. Here's an image so you can see what I'm talking about... (side) (top) So I'm pretty sure I can make the base and the supporting frame out of 1/2inch PVC pipe with 45degree elbows.  The electrical and fan for the filtration unit and netting we have have sorted out already. For the life of me, I cannot figure out what to make the "filtration unit" out of.  It needs to be a shell basically so I can fit the filter and fan inside.  First I thought maybe use thin aluminum sheet metal and form it to a desired shape.  (I've even found stuff for air conditioning ducts that is almost in the shape and size where it would work for a prototype.  I even had an idea of using foam.  Use a foam cutting tool to make a top and bottom piece, paint them with an acrylic coating to harden it.  Then gluing the top and bottom piece. *Any idea what I can use to make some sort of "box" that doesn't look like junk to hold my internals? Also, taking any ideas of how I can make the folding joint for the supporting arches.  I was thinking maybe just making them less wide than the frame, so they can be lined up towards the center, and drill a hole through them and bolt them.  Any comments? If you've made it this far in my post, thank you!  And I look forward to any of your craft ideas. tl:dr; What material can I use to make a "shell" of a desired shape that can hold electronics and stuff? -Mike

What should I build?

At the moment, I don't have many good and innovative ideas to put into a K'nex gun. Can you give me some concepts and ideas of what I should build? Please don't give suggestions about making models of real guns. Also, if possible, please try to include a sketch of your concept.

Allow members to post "build reports" and mark Instructables as "I did this!"

The purspose of Instructables is to provide guides for people to build stuff, right? So it seems like members should be able to click a button that says "I built this!" for an Instructable, and we could see how many people have actually gone out and built their own version. It'd be even cooler if you could add a "build report" with pictures and videos of your version of that instructable. Otherwise, people who build stuff might put their pics up on Flickr or Facebook, and maybe link to the Instructable, but it isn't easy to see all the different versions of that Instructable that have been implemented.

Schematic Building Aplication For My Computer

Okay so making schematics is a pain so I was wondering if there are any applications that you can make a schematic with? For instance I could put in a resistor symbol, capacitor symbol, transformer symbol or a speaker symbol ETC ETC and then put in wire and add numbers to identify components and then print it? Are there any applications like that?

Things You Want to Build During Your Lifetime

Every now and then, I come across a big project that I want to build at some point during my lifetime. These projects may have some special or sentimental meaning, or they may just be ridiculously cool! Personally, I prefer a little of both :-) I have two specific projects on my mind: A flight simulator (check out my other post titled "flight simulator," for some reason it didn't post into the tech room and wont show up anywhere-- Just click on my username and click on it) And a dark room. Both of these projects mean something special to me, and I hope to build them some time or another. But the real reason for this post is to hear what you guys want to build. So, reply to this post with your ideas, and maybe you'll inspire someone else! Thanks, MDJ

computer desk

Anybody interested in an instructable on building this desk that I'm going to build in the near future, it takes 1 and 1/2 sheats of 3/4th inch plywood to build. It's wide enough to hold up to 3  21 inch monitors. It can hold just about any mid tower computer  nicely, and under it i will be putting in a drawer but these aren't the final plans so I don't want to design a drawer just yet, next to the keyboard pullout would probably be a place to store documents, or in my case drawings. and on the right you'd have your multi purpose shelving may end-up making the spaces non permanent. Dunno we'll see how things go, I may not even use these plans.

Projecting onto glass

Alright here's my question, I know I've seen it done a couple places, the first image I could find as an example was just this : (just see below)What kind of glass do I need to do something like this? I'd like to build a table of sorts out of glass with a projector built into the frame under it to project upwards onto the glass, then eventually perhaps adding an IR sensor and work towards building a touchscreen/MS-Surface-like table. Any thoughts? Obviously its not normal glass or the projector would just pass through it

Build me - Nintendo Game Cube controller that outputs midi at the same time

I need this for an art project. I want a Nintendo GC controller that can simultaneously output regular game control, but also have the buttons output a midi signal. The objective being that I want to capture game input and have it controlling synths, effects, etc.  But I can;t figure out the hardware component of a controller that can do both things at the same time. I would pay and credit someone who could help me do an art installation with this. Budget is small, but I'd be happy to communicate further.  The ultimate result would be would be playing a game (like Smash) on the Nintendo, and at the same time hearing synth output driven by the midi output reflecting the buttons pushed on the game controller Thanks for any help or direction or even ideas on this. x

Swiss engineers build Bond-like underwater car

It is called the sQuba, and it is a car that runs on land, as well as in the water. Inspired by the Lotus Espirit, in the James Bond Movie, "The Spy Who Loved Me", the Swiss engineering company, Rinspeed Inc, was the mastermind behind it.If you are heading to the Geneva car show, it is expected to make a visit there.Read the full article at Company CEO Frank Rinderknecht, a self-professed Bond fan, said he has been waiting 30 years to recreate the car he saw Roger Moore use to drive off of a dock. The sQuba can plow through the water at a depth of 30 feet and has electrical motors to turn the underwater screw. You'll have to break out the wetsuit, however. The car has an open top, meaning that the two passengers are exposed to the elements."For safety reasons, we have built the vehicle as an open car so that the occupants can get out quickly in an emergency," said Rinderknecht, 52.Passengers will be able to keep breathing underwater through an integrated tank of compressed air similar to what is used in scuba diving. The sQuba's top speed on land is about 77 mph, but it slows down to 3 mph on the surface of the water, and 1.8 mph underwater.

Seeking PROP GUN info: from a gunsmith, metalsmith and/or fellow prop builder

Hi all, I've been asked to design a "Hellboyish BIG handgun" to shoot "holy water dart bullets at demons" for a show that is in pre-production. I've decided that rather than the usual "glue a bunch of stuff onto an existing toy gun and spray paint it" prop build I would like to actually make a functional metal prop gun (functional in that all the parts should work like a real gun but of course not actually shoot real bullets). Soooo.... my plan is to design the look of it and then work with a gunsmith to design the functionality; get the parts milled and then assemble it. Simple, right? Anyway, I'm not sure where to start so I'm calling out to the Instructables community. Has anyone built their own guns from scratch? Does anyone have advice? Right now I'm looking into companies that customize existing guns but what I really need is to start from scratch. All advice appreciated! DAZU

Posted by damianzuch 6 years ago

Well, I think is it time for me to....

...start knuckling down and making some of the more interesting things I have wanted to make (all the while still looking for the parts for what I have already started)....I spend a wee bit too much time exercising my fingers and the the brain seems to be going soft. (hmmm, you didn't think I was leaving or anything, huh? I will leave when they pry my cold dead fingers from my keyboard LOL (with apologies to Charlton Heston). I am going to start simple.....I am going to make this look a little better and also more useful at least, hopefully. I also want to test a few ideas with it. Then on to bigger and better things....Added more to the BOX, added a few more pictures.....

House Boat (Suggestions/ideas/brainstorming/etc. I want everyone's opinion)

Okay! Summer project time. I've been collecting acid barrels from my dad's work. Each 55 gallon, plastic drum, is 35 inches high and 24 inches in diameter (90 x 60cm) can hold 460 pounds in fresh water. At the moment, I have 9 barrels. I get another every month, so by mid-springtime, I will have 12 barrels. My question to you, is how would you go about making a house boat, or floating platform. I don't have a specific use for it, just a place to get away with friends or by myself. I would like some kind of canopy. I live about 25 minutes away from the river I plan to set my boat on. A friend of mine has a decent sized trailer, and that is what we would haul it on. My other question is, would I have to have my house boat licensed, or 'labeled' to be legal? Thanks in advance, some sketches would be appreciated. :D
