Subcontrabass Guitar - to build or not to build?

Hey all you musicians, and especially guitar players! I am currently planning the next version of my Prism Laser Guitar (vote for me if you like it!) and I need some opinions. The next version will hopefully sound very much like a real guitar, not a synthesizer. It will also be capable of playing chords among other tricks the first version couldn't do. However, due to physical and monetary restraints, it will have to be a 4-string bass guitar of some sort. That's fine with me - I love bass!So here's the idea: Unhindered by the physical limitations of a vibrating string, I am free to tune the bass as low as I want. I'm thinking of giving it a C#, F#, B, E tuning, with a bottom note of 17.5Hz. That's lower than pretty much any bass you can get, opening up a whole playground of super bass notes to drive neighbours up the wall. ;)Is that something people would be interested in? Or should I stick to a standard bass tuning range?

Building a Steambike

And I may need a little help! Wondering if anyone knows of any decent resources for materials, how-to, etc. I have this piece of crap bike from Target that's been sitting in my basement since the dawn of time, and I thought I'd scrap it out and convert it into a steambike. The only things that I'll probably be using from the old bike are the frame and possibly the wheels. I'm debating on whether or not I want to try and use the chainset somehow... If anybody knows any good resources, lemme know!

Building a Windmill

I live on top of a tall hill were the wind is always blowing at a constant 10 mph, and my electric bill keeps going up and up. So, the idea I have was to make a windmill that is powerful enough to generate between 8000 watts to 12000 watts. I want the design to be efficient, but at the same time not an eye sore. I figured that that just one windmill would need a 20ft propeller so I am leaning more to a series of windmills. I need some more information on the cost, and the design aspects of one or more windmills. If anyone has experience on this subject I would appreciate any information.

Building a genertor? Answered

I have a 5sme22nj028a general electric motor and wanted to buld a generator. It is 10 pin (not including earth). I have used a voltmeter to see what generate but there are many combonations and they all seem to generate. Also it is brushless. I have posted this question before but fogort to include that the motor says varable speed on the side. I was thinking that connecting diffrent pins would make the motor go at diffrent speeds. In my other question someone said that it may need a mirco prosser before it. I think that this is probaly the case but wanted to see if anyone knew about this motor. So if it needs or doesnt need a micro prosessor before it, please tell me. I should be able to work it out from there. Thanks

Building a robotic arm?

In Science next term, we've been told that we'll need to build a robotic gripper. All it has to do is pick up a cup. I've been having a look around, and the balloon idea isn't practical because if the cup was full it wouldn't work. And I'm okay with spending a little money, but I'd rather not spend $100 or anything on a kit. So what's a good idea for me?

Building a tall bed

Hi Instructables Community! I need to build a bed with about 2 feet of storage underneath it so I can put my things in boxes and sublet my room!  I am attempting to do this on the cheap, but also want the bed to be sturdy enough to jump on!  My idea is to have four 6x6 bedposts and construct the frame out of 2x6s with a 2x4 running lengthwise and also one running across on the bottom for added support.  And possibly brackets to help reinforce the legs.  I don't have a box spring and am not sure whether use plywood sheets or fence boards for the platform.  Any thoughts on this plan?  Does it sound sturdy?  Also, I am trying to find a way to transport lumber from the building supply store I will buy it from to my house.  If you live in SF and have a truck, I will pay you and make you lunch if you help me out!   Let me know!

Building a lighted trackball!

I saw a guy at Starbucks using a lighted Trackball with his laptop about six months ago. I should have asked him where he bought it, because I've been searching for one ever since and it's "can't be found!". I even searched at the Consumer Electronics show in January; nothing. Nothing online. So I'm going to have to BUILD one! The trackball he was using had a clear plastic case, and it flashed blue as he moved the ball. You can buy translucent trackball assemblies (for games) where the ball is lighted; but that's not what I'm after. The optical trackballs operate off an internal LED, it may only be necessary to expose that by making a clear plastic, or colored (blue?) plastic case; I'm not sure. Any suggestions or know-how would be much appreciated! I would try to build one if I had enough information. -steve

Building materials for kayak?

HI there I was wondring if anyone has ever considered/ tried building a solid bottom kayak out of recycled plastic (maybe a bin)? I loved the ease of carrying and price of my inflatable kayak but hate how easy it is to puncture in running water. I'd like to make something thats light to carry to the water and can stand being bashed around a bit. I was thinking of cutting some pannels out of any plastic I can get my paws on, stitch and gluing them together to form a sort of pea pod shape and then lining the edge with some of that foam stuff they make floats out of. Any thoughts?

Prop Building Guidebook

I have a new book out that should be of interest to prop makers, cosplayers, and anyone else interested in learning more about this type of fabrication. The Prop Building Guidebook covers materials and methods such as carpentry, metal work and welding, plastics, molding and casting, sculpting, fabric and sewing, painting and more, along with safety procedures, shop setup, planning and budgeting. At 383 pages, with over 575 color photographs and illustrations, it is the most comprehensive guide to prop building ever published, and it does so using professionally-produced props from well-known films and theatre productions. Nonetheless, it presents techniques usable for all skill levels and budgets. The book's webpage,, has information on where you can buy it (you can get it online at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and most other major online retailers). The website also has how-to videos and bonus chapters, all of which is free to view and read even if you do not buy the book.

Tp4056 and 18650 build

I'm planing to build a battery pack this summer and i was wondering if this setup could work. The tp4056 boards are really cheap and I've got a few lipos around I want to make a use of it. My goal is 3s2p or 4s2p with one board per lipo cell (even  7p is of interest, but that is another build). Now I was thinking wiring from Vout on the board to a motherboard connector (something with a lot of connectors)  so that I can disconnect the entire bank for charging. Take a look at the picture, it is supposed to be a 3s pack, but I'm not sure if it will work. When charging =NO load and when load = no charging. Tp4056 have a built in protection circuit why I would like to use those. I would appreciate your help on this. What I know about the board is that Batt+ and Vout+ are same, but Batt- and Vout- are separated by a mossfet that protects the battery. And of course 3s lipos batteries do not sum up to 12V exactly, that is not the issue here. Question is if this setup would work, i.e. When charged, I can connect them in series and the output is ~12V or I fry the circuit/batteries/both!?

Build an Electric Car

Check out the video of his converted Metro going up hills: Sounds easy, right?  So when are you planning to convert your car or truck? This post has been sponsored by Pepsi. Building A Segway Collaboration

So, I'm working on making a segway in my vocational tech class as a graded project. I am able to design pieces and send the sketches to another tech class that can make what I need, but I have to find or make the actual electrical components, such as micro-controllers, sensors, etc., myself. The school allows a certain budget for buying necessary components, but I do need help figuring out what pieces I need. I am a wiz at programming and can learn almost any language within a few weeks. What I really need help with is figuring out the electronics. I don't want people just telling me what to use, I'd like an explanation, even a short one, so I understand why the piece is needed and increase my understanding of electronics. I am currently clueless about the different brands and types of micro-controllers, and would really like help in that respect, and as the project progresses, I am sure I will need more help. The topic has 'Collaboration' in the title because I would like multiple suggestions and tips to learn from and choose, and multiple sources of input could help me in the long run. So, for the first question, I have to ask, what would be the best micro-processor for building a segway, and why?

Build Counter

An additional feature that I would like to see would be a build counter. I know you can favourite things, but a lot of people dont actually get round to building these things so I'd like to be able to see how many people have actually built the item. For example, I built a lightbox table from one of the links; I left him comments telling him I built one, but I think it would be a cool feature if I could look at an instructable and see how many people have built it. You could even link to a gallery where people photos of their build.

Build Yacht

Hi, my friends and I want to build a small yacht. We are beginners, so we dont have previous experiences in building such things. I just graduated with Mechanical Engineering degree from Polytechnic University of New York and my other friend is a handy man and he had experiences in fixing boats and yachts, another friend has experience in Mechanical Engineering design industry, he graduated couple years ago. We want to build it from scrap materials, we are thinking to get an old boat or yacht now and use that material to build our. I found this website may be you have an opinion on this web site. We are looking for any good advises for the beginners, any good literature on that topic. Another big problem we dont know where to build it. We are welcome enthusiasts like we are specially people who have some place to build it in our area (NYC, Long Island, New Jersey.)
