Im making the alternator with the 12 magnets, i know that it normally uses 9 coils,I would like to know if I can use 12 coils with the 12 magnet set up and it will be 3 phase but with each phase having 4 coils. I know the wire set up for the star with the 9 coils ,what would it be with the 12 coils. Thanks John

Coil Gun

HiI am planning to build a small (length about 15 cm) portable coil gun. There are some really good intructables out there. (I still don't have enough knowledge of how to build this thing) I found this site to be pretty interesting. How can I make a powerful coil gun like that with capacitors (not that whole blob of camera stuff)? I am hoping that it could be rechargeable, perhaps by a USB connector (5V). But that would not last long right? So I guess by adding some batteries would help. Trying to get this coil gun to the smallest size with a powerful blow. By the way, there is something called EMF that affects the system? Thanks

Coil winding :(

Someone please help me.. My hands are getting so tired from doing this!! Ok, My first attempt was simple, Put cardboard on sides of pen, hot glue it down, wind coil. Works great for 18 22 gauge. Got some new 14 gauge wire, well, its A LOT harder than I expected :( What can I do to make winding 40 ft of 14 gauge wire fast and easy? Is there any way I can get it on a power drill or at least something that will make turning it easy? After 2 neat layers on my pen and a lot of tight holding, the 3rd layer started pushing the lower layers away, making the coil get messy :(

Tesla Coils?

I've looked all over the 'net for info on how Tesla coils work, bu all of them are too complicated. Can someone help me? Goodhart mentioned:"...This (negative ion generators), in conjunction with a larger Tesla coil can produce even nastier voltage spikes if one tweaks the 555 a bit.." How? I only want to make a (very) small one. I don't understand what the spark gaps are for, the coil parts I kinda understand, but all the rest is too confusing.

Ignition Coil

Yes, I just posted something on a flyback. I was interested in that, until I saw this. It got me interested in ignition coils, so I got one new from the autoparts store for $20 (USD). I looked on the site, for the schematic, and realized that I didn't know what the rectangle was. Is it a resistor? I'm new to electronics, what size resistor do I need (if it even is a resistor)? What about the capacitor? I have a 100uf 200v electrolytic one, will that work? Also, part of the core is not in the coil, it's square shaped, could I rig it to work like this flyback circuit?Or this one? (simple driver circuit)?Sorry about the never ending beginner electronics questions, I just really don't have anyone else to ask.

Pancake Coil

Hello, I was going to try building an old Tesla "Pancake" Coil, and then write an instructable for it. (please don't steal my idea!) Does anyone have any information or building techniques at all that they can give me to help? The Pancake coil is just a Tesla Coil that has a flat secondary, as well as a flat primary. Tesla used it in his early radio and wireless power transmission research. The primary circuit should be pretty much the same as a conventional Tesla Coil. But I am a bit confused as to how to build the secondary. A few questions I have: What wire gauge should I use (I'm pretty sure that Tesla didn't use magnet wire for this)? How do I determine the space in between the turns? (more to come) I realize that most people don't build these kinds of coils anymore, and therefore most people probably won't be able to answer my questions or give me any info; I'd just thought that I would try and see if any one could. It would help me a lot. Thank you.

NE555 tesla coil Don Smith ignition coil Tesla coil.....?

I know I've requested info on this previously, but there are still some info I am lacking. The questions I have are these: for the 2 nf capacitors, at what voltage rating would be best to use. For the lack of my own intelligence, could somebody tell me in what direction the power flows? (direction in the diagram) I have almost all the parts save for the nf caps and the 2 diodes. does anyone have a suggestion of what kind of HV diode I could use for the 45KV diode? unfortunately the exact rating with 1-2Amps of a 45KV diode so far is WAY to expensive for me. Any suggestions? What would the approximate power output from the ignition coil be?

Use of transformers/ignition coils in a coil gun.

I've seen a couple of suggestions that an ignition coil, or a decent sizes transformer set up in a similar way, can be discharged into the coil of a coil gun, it the place of the usual capacitor bank. The main advantages seem to be a much faster recharge time, no need to create 200+V, and the availability of parts. I only have 540uF worth of capacitors at 200V, which should work for a small gun, but I have several large transformers, and a crate full of ignition coils. Does anyone know of any reasons why this would not work, or any modifications needed to make this setup work? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Methods for winding coils

When I read up on the coils used in power generation, I found that the wire used is a type of magnet copper wire, and I bought 1600 feet of it on ebay. My only problem now is winding the coil. I figure I can do something like wrap it a few hundred times around a pole thats slightly larger than the rare earth disc magnets I got. Anyone have any suggestions? Btw, most of my information is adapted from normal rotating wind power generators.

Hello everyone, I am looking to get some advise. I am building a Tesla coil and cant really get any transformers other than MOT. I have four MOT with all their other components (Capacitors). What I am asking is can I use these MOT wired up in a certain way and I also read somewhere that I would need to add a component to prevent the MOT's from sucking in too much power. If anyone out there can give me some detailed advise it will be great. I just started the build so pictures are coming soon. Thanks in advance to you all

I am building a tesla coil, the first i have ever built. I know that one side of the secondary coil is supposed to be grounded (the other side being the donut). Strong coil spring

Hi, I want to build a rotating mechanism powered by a spring. Once released,I need the piece to make 2 rotations in a fraction of a second. I also need it to be quite powerful since it will have to push another piece. For this application, I believe that a coil spring (such as those we can find in clocks) is the best suited, but will it be powerful enough ? An if I use a torsion bar spring, the problem is that I probably won't find one that can make 2 turns.... they are usually designed to be used on small angles only. I would be glad to have your advices ! :)

Coil Gun Project

Hey guys, I am currently building my first coilgun, first of all, the components: Charging:     Disposable camera circuit x 2     2 x D cell batteries Capacitors:     2 x 1200uF 200V     2 x 680uF 200v     2 x 300uF 200V     1 x unknown (attached to camera circuit with no info) Switch:    250V @ 15A - 6 pole toggle (I will upgrade to some for of solid state when I have the money) Now, because I have two of each capacitor I have put one of each into a parallel bank, giving me 2 cap banks with one of each cap, I then connected the two banks in series, I have not done a lot of maths yet which I think I should but I was hoping that would give me 400v which seems to be average. The problem is, it is only charging to 340v tops, I think that may be due to the camera circuits being wired incorrectly. I have the two batteries in series, both charging both of the circuits, then the circuits both charge the caps, the + and - outputs meeting on the caps, am I doing that wrong? Also, does having 300uF caps in series with 1200uF caps hinder the bigger ones? Would I be better of with just the 1200uF and 680uF, or maybe even just the 2 1200uF in series? should I also leave the small cap on the circuit or take that off? Thanks in advance guys, any help would be greatly appreciated. I am having a lot of fun with this project and while I wouldnt like to be on the other end, it is still not as powerful as I would like, even for it's small size.

Tesla Coil Safety?

My high school recently had an engineering fair, and my friend had built a tesla coil. Its has multiple spark gaps, an RF filter (I think thats what its called), a 120 to 20000v transformer, and toroid top-load, if any of that matters. We/I would entertain ourselves by standing away from the coil and holding a fluorescent tube (by the glass with bare hands, not by the contacts) near the top-load and watching it light up. Even though I was well away from the coil, my forearm muscles would twitch, especially it the coil spark hit the contact on the other side of the tube. Then if anybody touched me, both of us would feel a shock and the same slight twitching (the same kind of twitching you feel from those electric muscle stimulators with the pads you put on sore muscles). We even set up a chain of about 5 people holding hands, and all of us would feel a shock, even though only the first person in the line (aka me)  was holding the fluorescent tube near the coil, with my hand on glass, no where within range of the streamers coming from the top-load. Now for my question: is this dangerous? (I know its non-lethal, im talking about my nerves) And what exactly was happening? because it was not an incredibly large coil, and i know that the field of a coil is much larger than the actual streamers. I also read somewhere that insulators dont work the same at incredibly high voltages. I think what I was feeling was the skin effect, and the charge came from the excited electrons in the tube. If my ideas are correct, then wouldn't me holding the tube be just the same as if i had just put my hand near the top-load and let the streamers hit me?

Tesla Coil MMC

Hello. I am currently trying to build a Tesla coil. However, due to a little mistake my MMC only has about 1/4th of the capacitance required to get it to resonate . Now I wonder what the best course of action would be. add a resistor to reduce the amount of amps to 1/4th of its maximum (6000 volt, 5 mA instead of 6000 volt, 20 mA), and thus the capacity required for resonance (I have a variable resistor here). Or just run it with full power, which would mean it would most likely not function as good as it could (spark gap fires 4 times where it only should fire once) I am currently not capable of adding up extra capacitors to the bank due to a lack of money, but might decide to do this in the furture Help would be appriciated.
