I just went to a garage sale that I saw on craigslist. The guy advertised a good amount of computer stuff. Upon getting there I found a treasure trove of 3-8 year old computer parts. Long story short i bought a box of 20 motherboards for five bucks. Sadly only six of them have processors though. Now comes the problem, what the hell should i do with 20 motherboards? I'm actually gonna go back there too because he's got empty towers at $5 a piece, as well as NICs, video cards, power supplies, and the like. So again, any ideas on what I should do?

I'VE BEEN WORKING IN AN OFFICE FOR OVER 25 YEARS, AND WE ALL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. LITTLE NOOGIES OF PAPER WITH PASSWORDS TO DIFFERENT WEBSITES, SCRATCHED OUT AND CHANGED, ILLEGIBLE, ETC. IS THERE A WAY TO PROGRAM A USB DRIVE TO HOLD ALL YOUR PASSWORDS SO THAT YOU DON'T NEED THE PIECES OF PAPER? SOMEBODY COULD MAKE A TON OF MONEY JUST WHERE I WORK WITH ONE OF THESE!

Would it be possible to use a landline telephone, a computer with speakers and a microphone, and a software program to connect to the internet with dial-up? there are multiple free dial-up numbers available, so if I called with the phone, and used the computer to emulate an analog modem and listen to the response with the microphone, would I be able to get online? if so, does anything like this already exist?

Ok, so i basically just set up my first pc. I actually built it from a dell dimension 4700. It now has a new motherboard which is much better. Heres the specs: Operating System: MS Windows XP Home 32-bit SP3 CPU: Intel Pentium 4 530 Prescott 90nm Technology Ram: 2.5GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 333MHz (5-5-5-15) Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5KPL-AM EPU (Socket 775) 25 °C Graphics: DELL E173FP @ 1024x768 Intel(R) G33/G31 Express Chipset Family Hard Drvie: 78GB Seagate ST380013AS (SATA) 28 °C Optical Driver: CD_ROM Drive Audio: VIA High Definition Audio Power Supply: The crappy 400W dell one from the dimension 4700. I really need to upgrade the power supply, cooling, hard drive, and maybe ram. Cooling especially, because i can overclock and i really want to. If i do a 5% OC, i stay at about 60 °C when playing games or stress testing. A bit more is pretty normal. Thats kinda hot though... So, thats why i want to upgrade the cooling. And it would help to upgrade the power supply a ton. And im going to need to with all the stuff i want to add. Anyway, heres some pics:

This is so... It's back then, it's like teaching cave-men how to arrive at 42... What did typing-pools make of this? Punch-cards, magnetic- ah such good old stuff Retro', very retro', and in parts quite profound. And it's ... Cholmondley-Warner?

I have a problem and the people on Instructables are so smart I am hoping someone can advise me. A year ago I used my Macbook Pro in my kitchen and happened to leave it on the kitchen table over night. I never did this before. We had a huge storm that night and my roof leaked. I had it repaired following Hurricane Ike and it had been fine but then something happened (I got it fixed - kind of like locking the gate after the cows get out) and that one night was the only time I ever left my computer there or had a roof leak that was pretty bad and covered my entire table with water. When I saw my table and computer I thought I would fall out! I picked up the computer and water ran out of it! I didn't know then to take the battery out and let it dry out completely and I don't know if it would have worked anyway. I whined for a day or two and then bought a new Macbook Pro. Now I can get it to power up and it seems like it is working but there is no display. First I wonder is there a way to get that computer to work again.....Second - Is there a way to recover my videos and pictures even if that computer never works again so I can have the pictures of my best friend who recently passed away and have the pictures and videos of the wildlife I love to photograph? I am a principal so I take a lot of pictures and videos at school and make videos for students and staff. Previously I was the assistant principal and my best friend was my principal and I have a lot of video and pictures of all the fun stuff we used to do just on off time or at school. My best friend and principal ended up with a brain tumor and passed away a few months ago. She was young and vibrant and larger than life. The staff I inherited from her would love to see some of our videos and pictures from the days when she was healthy and our principal. It really bothers me that I can't get my videos and pictures for both reasons, the loss of the videos that would remind me and my staff of fun times with my friend at school and because of the animal videos I feel I have lost that I would love to be able to see and use again.I spend my free time making videos and doing animal photography. I have 10 game cameras set up on my property in East Texas and I love to watch the animals. All of my previous pictures, video, etc....is on that hard drive. I removed it and I can save to it but I can not open up the picture and videos on it. The new Macbook has updated software and I have not been able to open up iPhoto, IMovie, or IDVD and get my my pictures and videos from it. I really wish I could get those images and videos back. I now have that hard drive in a hard case to be used as an external hard drive. If you read all of this, Thank you! If you have any helpful ideas I would love to hear them. If you have any interest in the type of videos I make feel free to visit my Youtube channel at FoxysMyGirl@youtube.com Foxy was my first great dane and I was crazy in love with that dog hence the username! Thank you! Amy

I am suggesting tutorials on the following. All passive components and prefereably vacuum tubes can be used to build the following circuits. Analog computers that are programmable and hopefully intellegent. with these you should process many signals at the same time. and instead of displaying results on an oscillscope, make a monitor and a gui. I have a theory for a power supply. I think it works im not technically able to build the entire circuit yet. It's all passive. its a passive AM radio that sends a 60 hz sine wave. then on the other end you have many many antennas attatched to a passive receiver circuit. because each antenna will induce an electric field from the air, you should be able to get lots more power out of the circuit than you put in. and because its antennas, its compact and light weight. And if you can figure it out, you can build plasma rockets too. I need some more information on how plasmas travel through an electric field. but you know if you want to, you can build cars, boats planes, houses, cookware, sensors, surveilance, recording studios, 3d printers etcetera in passive electronics and post tutorials on it. I am getting somewhat close to growing carbon based electronic components on a tree. I have some(a few) molecules in mind and I am starting to research and make progress on sequencing DNA. If you want this information it is simply yours. but I need analog flight simulators, spaceflight simulators, weather simulators that use chemistry and math to predict the weather, ocean simulators that simulate all of the bathymetry of the ocean to predict surf and erosion. aircraft designers. I have a motor that i am designing like the following. It only uses permanent magnets at the moment and it works similar to an alternator. If you can figure it out, you can build it too. I have an alternate way to make bearings by using cylindrical magnets(the kind with the hole in the middle) and one is attracting and one is repelling. this should be able to make it so that the magnets levitate and spin freely. Again if you want this information it is yours. YOu can also make analog computers compatable with software that exists today like linux. it is possible. it just takes some time and some thought. ANyhow anything you want make it wireless make it programmable and make it and post tutorials on it. I want EVERYTHING to be wireless from the computers to the recording studios to the rockets. ANyhow thanks and have fun and stuff and it might be fun and it would help everyone and would help your compnay to produce these tutorial but you know wireless guitars, wireless amps, wireless record players wireless cnc machines, wireless laser cutters wireless induction cooktops etcetera. you can even make a record player that instead of using that metal thing to vibrate, you can use like sonar. You know this is just some cool stuff to consider developing. The radio based power supply will work, it just needs some fine tuning and same with the motor, but yeah have fun and be easy with this stuff itll take a while. but you know if you build rockets, spin the rockets to create a strong electric field, but you know i could use tutorials on how plasmas move and accellerate through an electric field etcetera. and for god sake, build EVERYTHING!

So a couple of months ago i downloaded saints row 3 *crack* from blackbox, i install but at 25% of installation it says "Decompression failed. Error -7". I thought is was a problem with the installer. Then i downloaded Grand Theft Auto IV (wonderful game i mite say), and it comes up with non stop "CRC Error. Needs orijinal CD" or something. ---this is where i got suspicious. Then Battlefield 3. That is the moment i started to hate computers. Dying light, that was my limit. Alright I know this question has been asked a hundred times before, but I've searched and none of them have been close to what I specifically want. I have two old computers with some fans and L.E.D's, and I was just wanting to find something to use these things for. Everything I find is either about restoring the computer or just using the shell of one. I want something like robots lights or something like that. Oh, and sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

I found that i use older and slower computers more than i do my desktop modded to be fast, it's the fastest computer in my house! still for some reason i keep using an overheating, amd 366 laptop to play dos games and a pentium 4 laptop with 256mb of ram, instead of my desktop with a celeron D 3.23ghz (overclocked of course, how else?) and 1gb of ram. why? lol.

I was wondering. Is it possible, with or without hardware so I can browse the internet without volume, for listen to music at the same times on Itunes, and hear it. Basically, is it possible to not here sounds on the internet without turning my whole computer volume off? Google was no help.

Hey Instructables community! I'm trying to build a system that will transmit video feed from a camera attached to an RC car to a computer over wifi for a project me and my daughter are working on. I've looked through several solutions, such as wireless KVM, but wanted to know what you guys thought would work best. I'm looking to have to put as little electronics as possible on the RC car, to minimize weight. Thanks!

Have a look at this. Many of thes US "Electronic Recycling" centers are actually illegaly sending the electronics to china. There they are melted down with no saftey procautions with things like acid. This is a big deal and something needs to be done. Here

Hi, I have been wondering about creating an ambient glow around the back of my iMac with a usb powered cold cathode light or led strip, could anyone help me with this? i would prefer a prefab solution that doesn't involve much soldering or modification of hardware but that stuff is not necessarily beyond my skill level. (and sorry if this is in the wrong place, its my first post :P )

From Wired:"In just over a day, a powerful computer program accomplished a feat that took physicists centuries to complete: extrapolating the laws of motion from a pendulum's swings.Developed by Cornell researchers, the program deduced the natural laws without a shred of knowledge about physics or geometry. ...Condensing rules from raw data has long been considered the province of human intuition, not machine intelligence. It could foreshadow an age in which scientists and programs work as equals to decipher datasets too complex for human analysis."LinkThe software has a long way to come, but apparently it's showing a lot of promise. What do you guys think? If computers can do physics better than humans, does that make human physicists obsolete?

Ever wonder where your recycled electronics go? From Wired:"Pictured here is the "demanufacturing" center of the company's [Sims Recycling Solutions] Roseville, California facility, where workers disassemble everything from printers, cameras and computers to Jumbotrons for their reusable materials. The facility receives roughly 150,000 pounds of used electronics a day."Wired Article. How to recycle old electronics.

So my brother sold me his old broken laptop for $7 in quarters! (What a steal right?) So I scrapped the speakers, 2 sticks of RAM, USB ports, a cooling fan, LCD screen, a hard drive, and a diode. So I took the fan and wired it to a USB cable to have a cooling fan under my laptop since it usually runs pretty hot, and now it's nice and cool. Is there a widget or free software to tell me the temperature? Thanks. PS: What else should I do with all these parts? I already installed a RAM chip in my computer.

I have a wine fridge with two fans (computer fans) that cool a massive heat sink, but the temperature gauge is faulty so they constantly power on and power off. I was hoping to remove the existing controller and power the existing computer fans (that are already mounted) with an old Computer Power Supply to have them constantly on. Any ideas?

I came across this site with 2 RC cars that can be controlled freely over the internet. rajesh.homelinux.org/ I want to make one of these setups, but I don’t know exactly how to do the codeing. I got everything external under control. I am going to use the 25 pin printer parallel port. The only problem I have is trying to get a client pc on a webpage to communicate with my computer then to its serial port. So I need some help with the following... 1. A webpage with buttons to control a program on the host. 2. A program on the host to control a parallel port. I want a webpage to have 12 buttons, two sets of 6. One to control car 1 and the other for car 2. Each set will have the following keys. forward, back, forward left, forward right, back left, back right. (Or possibly a set of 6 buttons with a drop down menu to select the car to control.) I can use ubuntu or Windows, doesn’t matter. So if someone could guide me through the webpage makeing, communication to the host, and the host to the parallel port, I would greatly appreciate it. Here is a link that you might find useful. http://www.epanorama.net/circuits/parallel_output.html Update: I think the site at the top states that it uses Ubuntu and Apache. Apache/2.2.9 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.2.6-2ubuntu4.2 with Suhosin-Patch Server at rajesh.homelinux.org Port 80

Hi there! I am really wanting to make something over the summer or in general over the year however I am having trouble figuring something out something that would be pretty cool and helps with learning about the subject. I already have 2 projects going at the moment, I am learning python and creating a game with it. I need another project that could take be from 2 months to a year. It also needs to be complex, I really like a challenge :). Lastly it needs to be relatively cheap, cost could be up to $200. Thanks and have a great day :)

Anyone here have ideas on creating a computer-automated cable box remote control, so that I could use my computer to schedule when to turn the cable box on/off as well as have the computer make the remote select the appropriate channel?
