Desktops of March

We all use computers to access this website, which means were all most probably sat infront of a computer. Many other forums do a monthly 'show off your desktop' thread, so i intend to bring the same to here. Some of us are more than happy strolling along with the default windows xp skin, and a few icons on our desktops, others want and need to customize it as much as possible. Some of us, like myself, appreciate the extra efficiency with some of the tools available. This is a place for people to share their desktops, and to ask questions about other peoples, so if you see someone else with a kick ass wallpaper, ask them where they got it!I do not want any flaming. We accept ALL operating systems as equal. So, on with the show, here is my march desktop features include - Running Mac OS X LeopardiStat Menus for temp, and memory usage in menu bariPulse for further activity usage in the desktop.Adium, with a custom black text transparent backgroundGeektool, displaying RSS feed of recent Ibles comments, and the timeMy own home made wallpaper, featuring a snail picture i found.I look forward to seeing yours!- gmjhowe

Desktops of April

Well, I said i was going to try and keep this topic 'idea' going for a few months, see what response I get!Last months was a success, lets hope you all change your set-ups enough to keep this a monthly thing.Today I have my work computer, which i just outfitted with a new background. I will add one of my home system when I get home. The second two images are from my home set up. The Apple one i made myself, the portrait one was a desktop that i refitted to go the other way round, while adding some machinae supremacy lyrics. The Wallpaper was from heylove, the artist has some good design work, and some even better photography, so check it out.Running the on the desktop is geek tool, which is in Swiss Thin (i always use swiss at work, as many of the other fonts are turned off and on throughout the day).In the title bar we have Little Snitch, and iStat Menus.Be sure to post your desktop below. If your creative, and your still running the same wallpaper as last month, then you need to change it, right now. Then post it.gmjhowe

How do I change my desktop without spending too much money?

I found a nice desk that fits perfectly in the small space I have for it, yet it's big enough for my multiple monitors. The problem is that the veneer (a plasticky thin top) has a horrible color and it's also stained. So I want to change the desktop color (to white) by using some sort of contact or adhesive paper, but I went to Home Depot and Lowes, and they only have that thin kitchen contact paper, which is very prone to scratches. Is there something I can use to put on top of my desktop to change the color, but resistant enough to use it without any protection. I don't want to spend too much money and I don't have the room to actually change the veneer. Any suggestions?

Buy or Build a PC?

I'm having some trouble deciding whether to buy a bare bone kit computer for less and build it, or buy a more expensive pre-built one. Here's one of TigerDirect's bare bone kits-http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3825393I like this one but the main problem is that I'm worried i will get all the connections messed up (serial cables, pin connectors, etc.) But it is about $100 less than this pre-built one belowhttp://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8885575&type;=product&id;=1212192194316So here's the whole thing in short- the bare bone kit computer i might screw up, but it is a lot less than a pre-built one (I'll probably trust the pre-built one more). Please help me decide which one.

Creating a Cell Phone (Kangaroo PC + 4G LTE module + LCD Touchscreen)

Good afternoon, all! As the title sums up, I am looking at the Kangaroo PC [1], which is a $99 battery-powered pocket PC, about the size of a cell-phone, with a tablet processor and a full Windows 10 OS, and I'm asking myself one question. Why is this not a cell phone yet?! Basically, I want to install an LCD touchscreen, a 4G LTE module, and some software. This project is similar to Raspberry Pi cell phones, in the sense that it will be DIY, and the new Microsoft Lumia, in the sense that it hooks up to a monitor for desktop. Does anybody have any advice, or know what direction to point me in? I am specifically asking for help with the 4G LTE module and maybe the LCD Touchscreen. I'm not sure what to get, where to get them, or how to install them. (I've searched and found miniPCIe and m.2 modules, so far.) Thank you!! Looking for Materials for Custom Sized IKEA Kassett Boxes (Desk Organization)

I used to have a 7" x 10.5" x 3" cardboard storage box to put miscellaneous items from Ikea but they no longer make that size. The box looks like: http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/10153238/ I have looked for alternative products but none were the same low price or the right size, other examples: http://www.snap-n-store.com/index_trading_card_storage For the materials, the cardboard is no issue, just have to find the right thickness (and maybe laminated) but there are things that I do not know where to find:  - The metallic label holder  - The metallic lining around the lid  - The short nut/bolts used for assembling it (will look at Home Depot)  - (optional) Metallic corner covers I was wondering if anyone made a similar box or would know where to get the material (or easier, buy it at less than $5 each...) Thanks!!

12v desktop fan laptop cooler, request for info

right, so my toshiba has a notorious problem with overheating. its the a505 series, which for any toshiba user should instantly bring forth the heating problems. i run some rather heavy programs on it, such as blender, and several emulators. however, my computer goes litterally shuts off immediately once it hits about 90 degrees (and it will, often...... when i'm using the internet.) so, i've taken to putting it on a box fan. however this makes useing the computer hard. i went out and bought a (really exspensive >( ) laptop cooler, which does jack. it's running at 68 degrees with the internet and pc health monitor running. it's powered by usb cord, and is way to underpowered to be worth  my time. so what i want to do is get a couple desktop fans (as in four to six), wire them together, and hook them up to an outlet, since a usb doesnt supply the needed power. i can probably get the fans wired up (series or parallel?) but i don't know anything about getting a 12v power supply and hooking it up. can anyone help me, please?

Wet Computer

I have a Dell Dimension 4600C, but it was ruined when my room was flooded (Thanks Joe the Plumber!). I know the power supply is fried (no power comes out, the circuit board looks white and wet), but I'm not sure if the motherboard is bad. Only the bottom 1/2 inch got wet, and it looks fine. Everything else in the computer works, but the computer was plugged in when it died. Is there a way to test the motherboard (without another computer or PSU)? Should I buy a PSU without knowing if the motherboard works? A new motherboard is too expensive, I might as well get a new computer, but the power supply is only $20. Henry

Instructables Wallpapers

I was trying to look for a new wallpaper, as there isn't 'just the right Doctor Who' wallpaper out there, and it occurred to me that Instructables don't have any downloadable wallpapers (that I could find). SO I took it upon myself to make some and share them with all of you! I've never made wallpapers so I kept my designs simple. I chose the Instructables Robot, as he is the most familiar icon around here. I didn't want the hand, as for some reason it creeps me out.  I have made 5 wallpapers in total: One is the Instuctables Robot sitting in the middle quite large. Res: 1024x768 Second is the same above but the resolution is 1280x1024 Third one is the same as the above two, except the Robot is a lot smaller. Res: 1024x768 Fourth: Same as above but designed for some laptops, so the resolution is 1280x800 Fifth: Same as above but resolution is 1280x1024 Feel free to tinker or change them. I have also included a screenshot of my laptop using the fourth image.

Laptop's fingerprint reader, is it possible to reuse it on desktop?

The dead laptop is a HP Pavillion dv3 4010sl, the sensor is a Validity VFS301 (cdk1071_r04_hf) as written on the sensor itself. if i remember correctly it was shown as a USB peripheral. maybe is simple and it need just some resoldering to a USB cable, the problem is that the flat cable connecting it to the motherboard has 6 pins/lines and my knowledge in electronics is quite limited... I've found online what seems like a motherboard schematics (pg.48) and the vendor's sensor's manual. Does Anyone knows if is possible, If yes how?

Really easy multi use desktop machine

I need a multi purpose machine that can fit in a one cubic foot area. I need it to do most or all of the following; 1.) Have a "3rd and 4th hand" 2.) Fit in a 1'x1' space 3.) Light 4.) A controlable .1-24 volts DC output 5.) Small Storage 6.) Large magnifier on a flexible mount. 7.) Built in ruler 8.) Wire reel holder Im Sorry for being so picky, but I need to somehow cram all of that in to a small space. Pics or drawing would be nice. But comments and ideas would be better. P.S. Pic isn't related to machine

What to do with a bricked all-in-one pc?

I have a bricked Dell Studio 19 All-In-One PC, and wanted to know if I could use it for something. It was bricked by a failed BIOS update. There was a program from dell which came installed and updated any other of their software and drivers on the computer. Only after the failed update I found out that updating the BIOS is really unnecessary. The only fix I know for the motherboard is replacing it, and the only place I found out that refurbishes them are from a company in the US, and it's not cheap at all. (I used to live in the US, and moved to Brazil later) Well anyway, I wanted to know if I can use the computer for something else, like use the monitor for a different computer and use its bluetooth mouse and keyboard on a different computer too. I think the only thing really useful in it is the processor which is already old (Intel E7500 and a 320GB HDD). http://www.dell.com/us/dfh/p/studio-one-19/pd http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/product/studio-one-19/diagnose Thanks for the help!

Wind powered desktop PC, is it remotely possible?

So I was thinking up an idea this afternoon about how I could be more of a PC enthusiast, I came up with this idea: What if I could power a desktop grade PC on just the power supplied by a wind turbine (preferably that I had made myself), and batteries? My plan was to set up a (either or) BOINC Computer specifically for research, or something like a DNS/VPN server or failing that something like a NAS. Anyway, heres what I have been able to find so far in terms of wind turbines and power... http://www.mdpub.com/Wind_Turbine/ https://www.instructables.com/answers/how-to-battery-power-a-desktop-pc/ It seems way over my head, especially the second link to the other question. Computer Specs that I had in mind: Intel i5 K series chip of sorts 8-16 GB of (presumably DDR3 memory) A motherboard, again, not sure exactly what but this can be chosen nearer the time, if it helps, something with around 2-4 PCI-e lanes for numerous GPUs. (This is NOT meant to be a gaming rig). A couple of GTX 760's I was having in mind, something older will do too. (This would be using the CUDA technology for accelerated processing) A Power supply that would fit the bill... 1000 watts? May be needed depending on the number of GPUs I have. I am so ignorantly unaware of how this would work.  Other things that I would need: - A wind turbine that was able to charge batteries during the day (for example) - Batteries - Some sort of converter (I think) to change whatever AC power there may be into DC. I think that is what I need,  Thanks in advance! slippers.

Transplant SSD from Netbook into my Desktop

So random question, I'm looking at putting a SSD drive into my desktop solely to run windows off of so it boots faster/has better performance, but don't really want to shell out a crap ton of cash for a standard sata SSD Drive. Is it possible to transfer an SSD drive out of like say an ASUS EEE PC into a regular desktop, and would there really be that much performance gain? Thanks

Camera or MacBook?

Ok. So my birthday is coming up, and I want to get either a Nikon D3100 or a MacBook Air/Pro. I really can't decide which one I want more. I love photography and I don't have a DSLR, but I would also love a MacBook and I would probably use it quite a lot. I do already have a desktop, but I also have a point-and-shoot. I really need your help on which one I should get. Thank you in advance.

Desktops Of July

Right, This month it is my turn to host the monthly desktop thread started by gmjhowe. My my July has come round so fast and so much has happened in this time. What are you all waiting for, Get printscreening and show off your desktop. Don't be shy!To take a picture of your desktop on a windows machine use the printscreen key on your keyboard, Open up paint, Edit, Paste and then save this as a png. then upload this onto Instructables. To take a screenshot on a mac use the apple key, Shift and 3. This will save the picture to your desktop then you can upload it to Instructables. To take a screenshot in Linux go to Applications>Accessories>Take screenshot. If this doesn't work blame Lithium Rain ;-)Right for mine on my EeePC this month I'm using the Striped VS Visual Style from lassekongo83.The wallpaper I'm using was sent to me from a user on Assembler Forums so I'll upload that below, It is of vomiting fruit, I love really random wallpapers like that. It matches my random personalty. The icon set is Dark Theme for IconTweaker which is a free program to change your icons. What are you all waiting for, Get them on here and if you haven't changed it from last month change it now! Update: Nice desktops everyone, Keep 'em coming!

So... You think you know computers???

Is it possible to send VGA wireless-ly??? As in you have a desktop tower and then 25+ feet away you have a screen with a wireless keyboard??? I know it IS possible but is it FEASIBLE because commercial products that do this (just for the wireless screen) are $700 and up.

I cannot edit ibles with IE10.  It just opens and says "updating."  This means cannot edit in WindowsRT (ARM) at all.  It somewhat works with firefix, but I've had some crashes....  This is for existing and new ibs

Win a patch from me! ENDED

I would like to give away a bunch of patches and thought a contest is the best way to do it. I really enjoy the "Desktops of (insert month here)" forum topics so I though I would award patches to the best 5 desktops/wallpapers posted here. (Just so you have an idea on my tastes; I like pretty things, I don't like the colour grey, and I don't like guns!)My contest runs until the end of August.I decided to give everyone who posted a patch, just let me know which patch you would like!Since this was supposed to be a contest, I'll list my favourite desktops:Yokozuna's, Lithium Rain's, DJ Radio's, Goodhart's, and Sunbanks'.Thanks everyone who posted!

Home Security (take two) Windows or Ubuntu? Server or Desktop?

I've had a little experience with the security system setup from my last post, but I moved, and I'm going to try something different. Should I use Ubuntu Desktop or Ubuntu Server for webcam monitoring? I'm a Windows user who would like to eventually learn how to use Linux as well as i can use Windows. But in the meantime, I'm about to set up webcam monitoring in my house. I've got a few USB webcams, and one LinkSys wireless webcam. I'll obtain the monitoring software from a third party. I need an operating system that can handle processing four video streams as well as running the security software. (I'm also going to use remote admin software so that I can have a "headless" setup.) I'm currently running WinXP Pro (Corporate) on a machine with an A.M.D. Athlon rated at 1.02 Ghz with 2GB RAM. A friend of mine recommended that I use Ubuntu Linux, which I think is a great idea. The problem is that I don't know if I should use the Desktop or Server edition of Ubuntu. Also, since the rest of my network (and family members) uses Windows, the remote admin software I use either has to be cross-platform, or be Linux compatible with a web-interface. So should I use Ubuntu Server or Ubuntu Desktop? Or should I stick with Windows? Also, as far as the webcam security software is concerned, I need software that handles multiple streams and has options for motion detection, record on event, notification through email, and a web interface (HTTP server). Also, FTP options would be nice to have, but are not required. Any suggestions for this? (Win?/*nix)
