Perpetual Motion

If perpetual motion is theoretically impossible, how is the earth still in orbit? Or how is anything in orbit? There falling at the rate at which the object there falling towards is rotating and they'll never stop rotating or falling so isn't that perpetual motion?

Amazing Battery

This looks relatively easy to make;A stream of water is split into two streams and falls through two bottomless cans into two buckets. The falling water creates opposite electrical charges in the buckets, and high voltage arcs jump between them periodically.

Make socks which pause your TV show if you fall asleep

Sometimes I fall asleep when I'm watching TV and don't realize it, because I dream the rest of the story. Then of course when I wake up I'm thoroughly confused: why are the bad guys still alive? They had transformed into evil giant ants then I saved the day by feeding them peanut butter laced with boric acid! When I finally realize I'm not the hero in the story, I have to either go to bed and abandon all hope of finding out what really happened, or watch the story backwards, sped up and silent till I see a scene I recognize. No fun! These socks will protect the integrity of your show's story line: build them by following this tutorial, wear them while watching TV and they will pause the show when you fall asleep. Of course they won't keep you from dreaming up an alternate ending, but at least when you wake up you can start where you dosed off and find out who the murderer really is. This is a Netflix tutorial, and it's supposed to pause Netflix shows... but I'm sure it can be adapted to turn off Amazon Prime or other streaming services...

Have we see the event horizon of the Galactic black hole?

A preprint submitted to the Astrophysical Journal (Ap.J.) last week makes a compelling case for conclusive observational evidence for an event horizon at the compact object Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) at the center of the Milky Way galaxy. Recent observations with mm radio waves have determined Sgr A*'s mass , distance and diameter (Nature 455, p.78), which make it "very likely" to be a black hole, unless there is some sort of exotic physics leading to a compact, but still extended and visible, object at that location. This new paper uses very general arguments from energy conservation and radiative efficiency to demonstrate that it is "impossible" for the object at Sgr A* to have a visible surface onto which accreting material collects and radiates. While the authors go through calculations in standard General Relativity for demonstration, their results hold much more broadly than that, covering any gravity theory which includes stationary solutions (i.e., horizons). If there is an object with a real surface at Sgr A*, then all the material falling in must either give up it's full potential energy into radiation as it is falling, or we should see a separate, thermal spectrum from the surface of the object itself. The Sgr A* spectrum is extremely non-thermal; any thermal component is less than 0.4% of the total luminosity we see. That is equivalent to saying that the accretion efficiency (how much radiation you get from the falling material) must be at least 99.6%, compared to the actual efficiency estimated at 0.01 to 1% for Sgr A*.On the other hand, a "horizon" by definition is a position in space "below" which photons just can't get out. Material can fall through a horizon with no difficulty, but we will never see it, or any radiation from it, again. Whether there is a black hole or some other exotic object inside the horizon, it is invisible. The accreting material's luminosity may well be "low" (as observed); the rest of its potential energy is "lost" to our observation when it falls through the horizon.

New ball alternator

Hey I was thinking about having a new ball alternator well at least a idea. I made a model on this knex modeling thing. Well how It SHOULD work is that it is encased in a cage where the ball falls down and a motor will be turning the fan like things. Underneath the fan there might be 1-4 ball path. The fan will move and thus it will make the ball fall randomly in one of the 4 paths. I'm running out of pieces and I don't want to take apart my ball machine that i'm making so you guys can try to make this is you want. It might also be hard to see the yellow rod behind the red one.

If you're standing on the Moon holding a pen, and you let go

Thought this deserved some looking at:can you answer these questions right?13. If you are standing on the Moon, and holding a rock, and you let it go, it will:(a) float away(b) float where it is(c) move sideways(d) fall to the ground(e) none of the above25. When the Apollo astronauts wre on the Moon, they did not fall off because:(a) the Earth's gravity extends to the Moon(b) the Moon has gravity(c) they wore heavy boots(d) they had safety ropes(e) they had spiked shoes My prediction is that most of you will get the question right, as instructables is a scientific community.Check the link for detailshttp://www.phys.ufl.edu/~det/phy2060/heavyboots.html

Library shelves & storage

I am trying to improve a run-down library where the shelves are almost on the point of falling apart and there are store rooms but no storage shelves or anything really. The library is run down and had hardly much spent on it in the last 20 years. The library is in eastern europe and since the fall of the the communist era and the rise of modern democracy the library has stood still. (Bit of a time warp!)  I am able to make most things in wood and have tools and power tools, bench saw and drill etc. There is also reasonable supplies of timber. (But not that you would find in western europe, think basic..) So the your challenge Instructables is! ideas and suggestions that I could use to replace the old shelves and sort out the storage. Think simple or at least simplistic and give it a go. Regards

I want to be able to fall asleep to the sound of the waterfall ~75' away

I want to be able to set up a wireless microphone that will be able to withstand the elements in a northern Maine climate (wind, snow, freezing rain etc) that will capture the sound of a waterfall close to our cottage and transmit the sound with fairly good fidelity to a bedside receiver.  Something that won't eat batteries, or maybe even solar powered (if simple enough) I'm no electronics whiz (clearly) but surely this is do-able?  The power lines come in from the other side of the cottage, so are more than 100' away.  Nearest neighbours are more than a half-mile so the only possible interference I could see would be from our own cordless telephones.  Any takers?

Dutch Robot "Flame" Walks Like a Human

Via PhysorgThis robot uses the same way humans walk, but actually falling forward. "PhD student Daan Hobbelen has demonstrated for the first time that a robot can be both energy-efficient and highly stable. His breakthrough came in inventing a suitable method for measuring the stability of the way people walk for the first time. This is remarkable, as ‘falling forward’ is traditionally viewed as an unstable movement. To watch Flame in action click here (WMV, 5.25MB).Next he built a new robot with which he was able to demonstrate the improved performance: Flame. Flame contains seven motors, an organ of balance and various algorithms which ensure its high level of stability."Robots that can chase us flesh-bags down to power themselves are now one step (pardon the pun) closer. w00t!

Marble Machines

Here's a movie of a gorgeous, useless marble moving machine. Check out the guy's marble machine website as well; he's got a lot of discussion about raising marbles and making marble movement machines. He has built several others as well but this was my favorite, probably because of the lovely wooden musical noises created by the falling marbles.

Revolutionary Knex Gun Competition 3

"Necessity is the mother of all invention. Competition is the mother of all necessity." -Oblivitus The Challenge: Build a weapon that can survive being dropped as many feet as possible without breaking (30 or 50 feet for example). You will need video proof for this (the best way to do it is probably to throw it up in the air, DON'T HIT ANYTHING). Remember that how well it fires is also very important in this competition. Rules: 1. You may enter as many knex weapons as you like. 2. You may not enter siege weapons. Criteria (in order of importance) -Performance (how well it fires) -Innovation (how many feet it can be dropped from without breaking) -Appearance A weapon that was posted before the beginning of the contest will decrease its chances of winning. Grass is fine for dropping the gun on. However, dropping the gun on a harder surface will score bonus points. If the gun survives falling on more than one section (for example; on drop one it falls on its barrel, and on drop two it falls on its stock) the gun will score bonus points. Deadline: August 1st. Judging: I'll pick the winner. Rewards: The winner will receive my 5 star rating on their slideshow or instructable. The real prize, however, is the satisfaction of winning. The winning weapon will be announced in a forum on or shortly after August 1st. Entering The Contest: Post a link or photos of your weapon on this forum to enter. I will be posting a new contest near the beginning of each month until further notice.

xmega event-based IRCOM?

The IRCOM module has a capability of connecting to the uart not through a standard pin, but through the event system. This should make it possible to get IrDA input data for the IRCOM module from a pin other than standard or alternate RX pin for that uart.  But I haven't had much luck getting this facility working.  Has anybody used it?  Google shows nothing. I am actually getting data, but it's not the data that is being sent via IrDA. I think my problem may be that I don't know which events to configure the event system for.  I've tried the following: low level high level (i.e., low level + invert pin) rising and falling edges rising and falling edges with inverted pin With each of these, the IRCOM system does get data to the uart, but the data is not correct (and it's not consistent, either--the same IrDA packet generates different outputs at different times). Is a clock needed? Any thoughts?

Flugtag world record

Red Bull's Flugtag event is normally an event where the focus is on ridiculous contraptions falling into the water. But sometimes people actually do come up with ideas that actually get them some distance. Here's a video of the new record of 207 feet set by Major Trouble and the Dirty Dixies. For comparison, the second video shows a typical Flugtag launch. via Neatorama

Email Alerts

It used to be that an Email alert was sent when someone replied to one of my comments. Now, I get the entire thread that follows my comment. This results sometimes in a plethora of Instructables emails frequently falling off topic or multiple single lines from those that like to respond to their own message multiple times! I much prefer the old way it was handled... I could follow the thread from there if I chose.

Cardboard Furniture

This is probably over the top and won't work, but I need a wardrobe and cant afford a good one, and don't want to buy a cheap cheesy one that will fall apart in 6 months. I know cardboard can be sturdy, but is this pushing the limit? I mean, I really need to hang clothes in it. If not, at least have shelves so I can store folded clothes.  Any cardboard heros out there?

Bunk Beds Dangerous for Kids, Hopefully Safe for Interns

A new report shows that bunk beds may be pretty dangerous things that can lead to broken toes, bloody noses, ceiling fan entanglement (!), falls, strangulation and more fun things. Thinking back on my own experience growing up on the top bunk as a kid and in school dorms, I think I can claim about three of those injuries. But it was fun and sometimes we combined the injuries like the time I pushed a kid off the top of a bunk (an accident, I swear) and as he was falling off he chucked a plastic squirt gun and nailed me in the forehead making me bleed all over the place. He landed on a cushion and I proudly went to the hospital. Good times.Well, here at Instructables HQ we have our own bunkbeds for interns and visitors and so far there have been no accidents. But, as this study from Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio seems to say, it's only a matter of time before we add to the 36,000 reported injuries a year. Link

New Scientist recreates a robot made by the ancient Greeks

A friend forwarded this along:Ok, this was on slashdot, and it may be a little old, but it was the coolest thing I've seen today. If you can't watch the 2 minute video, the robot works by having a falling weight turn an axel. However, the real ingenuity of 60 AD shines from pegs that are put in the axel that the rope can be wrapped around in order to make the axel turn different directions at pre-programmed intervals.
