Yellow Gear with 84 Teeth!

I have a large collection of K'Nex and have discovered that a few of my yellow gears have 84 teeth instead of the usual 82. The shade of yellow is paler than usual and the spokes have a narrower shoulder near the rim. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Help with project design please

I am building what amounts to a miniature winch.  I have a small, but powerful, battery powered gear-motor, which can wind thread or wire onto a spool.  My problem is the motor shaft does not turn freely because of the gears so I need to find a way to allow the wire to spool freely out before it is then wound back under power.  One-way bearings do not work because they are designed to allow a shaft to rotate freely in the same direction it turns as it does when under power, like a helicopter rotor.  I need the shaft to turn under power in one direction but to spool out freely in the opposite direction.  Suggestions? I want to Etch clear through Brass on a table-top Answered

I want to make some fake gears and such to decorate steam punk and sci-fi stuff.  I'd like to take brass or copper and etch clear through, and have a "clean" edge.  Sharp I don't really want. I need to transfer an image from a computer-drawn source.  Heat transfer with toner I know, etching, well, not so much.    I'd also like to do this on my kitchen table.

what is the control circuit of a 12v dc gear type motor?

I need a control circuit or a schematic diagram for a gear motor to make it run and stop. It is being used in a magnetic pick and place using four bar linkage. The gear motor will run if the inductive switch detects metal found in the detection area and stop if  the metal is carried by a magnet and transferred to the designated area, and the four bar linkage or the gear motor will stop respectively. If you have questions regarding this details please ask me to make it more specific.

Gear design

Hello there, I was wondering if you could help me: I need a simple program to design a basic gear, a pair of twin wheels. I need to set the number of cogs and the diameter of the wheels; this mechanism has to be as tight as possible. The idea is to print the wheels on paper and then cut a metal sheet accordingly; can you tell me a way to transfer the image directly on the metal? That would be of great help... Thanks.

Which Low RPM Gear Motor?

I am working on a robot that will have a grabbing claw, of sorts, and I'm not sure what gear motors to use to actuate the claw.  It needs to have significant gripping power, so the gear motor must be low-RPM and high torque.  The two best options I have found so far are these: 1. 12VDC Gear Motor, 7 Rpm 2-7/16" x 1-5/16" Dia. 2.  Tamiya 70110 4-Speed Crank-Axle Gearbox Kit   If I used the Tamiya gearbox, I would also have to buy higher voltage motors, so the cost of the two is approximately equal.  Because of its layout, I think the Tamiya would be easier to use, but I'm worried about stripping the plastic gears.  Also, I have a smaller Tamiya gearbox, and the axle has some play in it and is extremely noisy. The 12V gear motor, on the other hand, appears to be more robust and probably has metal internal gears, but it would make my robot a bit larger. Does anyone have experience with Tamiya gearboxes?  How do they handle high loads?  If anyone has any input on these two choices, or other motors you think would be even better, I'd really appreciate the help.  Thanks!

How can I make 2 wheels on the same shaft counter rotate?

Hi, I'm looking to take 2 wheels of the same size, placed next to each other on a shaft, and gear them in such a way that they rotate in opposite directions but at the same speed. Any gearing that takes place has to happen right in the center. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to accomplish this in the most efficient way?

I have a gear that needs replacing in my radioshack r/c car, since it's from radio shack it isn't conventional at all (has 6 wires coming off of it) i have been trying to find a replacement gear set that would give the specifications of the gears but so far, no dice... i don't want to give up because it was a $100+ car (i know i overpaid) i also have a gear that is the exact size from the servo so i know the dimensions of the broken gear, if you have any suggestions for me that would be great!

Gear Study

The last Friday of the month is a build day around Instructables HQ. I've been meaning to create some art involving gears of different pitches, so I took part of my build day to do a study in gears. These are two laser-cut acrylic gears I made on our Epilog 36EXT that are half 10 in pitch diameter and half 20 in pitch diameter. I advanced the 20 pitch side about one-half of a pitch. The gears were designed in OMAX Layout, which just happens to have a nice gear profile generator. I'm hopeful about putting together a set that gradually change pitch diameter. There's a bit of slop between the gears, and I'm taking advantage of it (at least in this set) to keep the teeth from colliding at the transition. They only rotate freely in one direction; in the other they bind.

Force an automatic transmission into a gear?

Is it possible in the technological day and age to force a computer controlled automatic transmission to start in a higher gear like second.  About 90% of people will never need this, however out on the farm in a big diesel truck with 800lbs of torque you need it.  By starting in a higher gear it allows us to get through snow much better and this becomes extremely difficult with an automatic transmission.  Sure we can set the highest gear it will go into, but we can't lug through the snow and mud like we would like to.  Do any of you know of a chip out there already, or one you can make that will let you pick and chose your lowest gear.

Want to make cheap quartz clock turn paper gear. Need more torque...how? Answered

I followed one Instructable to create 4 different size paper gears and I've got a cheap quartz clock that I've stripped down to just the guts. Inside the clock was a small circuit board with quartz crystal and smaller plastic gears that move the hands of the clock. I'd LOVE to make the part of the clock that moves the second hand move the small paper gear that will then move the other 3 bigger gears. I've done a test fit but the parts of the clock don't have enough torque to cause the smaller gear to move the bigger one... ideas? I was thinking I could wire the quartz mechanism to act as a switch to power a small motor on/of each second. Will that work? I know that the voltage necessary to power the quartz crystal is really small, so I might be able to get away with powering the small motor AND quartz mechanism with the same AA battery, I could do separate power sources though...Here's the link to the gears instructable

Question about gearing

Hi everyone. I've been a long time lurker, and I love the site. I've learned so much just by coming here. I've just registered to say you have inspired me to take on a project of my own. I've sort of hit a bump in the road, though. I have an idea for a clock. I want to do a steam-punk flavored wall or desktop clock with exposed brass gears and various and sundry bits I have laying around. I want to tack the numbers directly onto the gears and use them instead of hands. So one large gear on the left with the numbers 1-12 in place of an hour hand, one large gear on the right with 00-55 by fives for the minute hand and a gear under the two that counts off the seconds. So, if I can get a motor downgeared to 1 rpm to drive the "second gear" I'd need a 60:1 gear ratio to make the "minute gear" accurate, and then 12:1 off of that to do the "hour gear." I know I can't drive them all directly off each other, because that would make the "Second Gear" tiny and the "Hour Gear" huge. Where I'm stuck, aside from my poor math skills, is how to get the ratios right and size of each intermediate step and number of teeth, etc. I don't know enough to tell if I'm in over my head, but it seems "do-able" from my perspective. I'd appreciate any feedback you all could give, even if it's just a link to a tutorial that will get me started. I'm not on a deadline or anything, I just found the urge to make something cool. I have a bit of a budget if I need to have something custom fabricated, but I'd prefer to do as much of it as I can. I wouldn't mind using off the shelf stuff like bicycle gears or similar, because I could always have them engraved and plated and made to look cool. So, any help or nudges in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, and thank you for such a wonderful site/community. Iggy **edited to add*** Of course I'd be delighted to write an instructable about it when It was done. It would only be polite. ;)

Metal Gear Solid Guns

I'm also looking for guns from one of the greatest games (at least to me), Metal Gear Solid. My top 5 requests are: 1. The SOCOM 2. The USP 3. The FAMAS 4. The Mauser C96 (The gun Eva uses in Snake Eater) 5. P90 (The gun Solidus Snake uses in Sons Of Liberty) Of course, all other guns from Metal Gear will also be appreciated as well, so if anybody who knows where I can find the instructable for any of these, or if anyone knows how to make it themselves (or is up to the challenge of trying to make them), please reply and tell me where to go (or what it will be called, if you need time to make it and put it up). I believe that it is possible to make at least 2 or 3 of these guns. Thanks to everyone that joins in the cause of making these guns, or at least telling me where to find the instructables for them, and happy building.

Finding 550-motor worm ?

Hey there, Recently I bought a bunch of 550-size (drill) motors from eBay, and I've really been itching lately to build some worm gearboxes out of them, the purpose of which would be a robotic arm or anything that requires huge amounts of torque. However, I haven't been able to find a site that supplies metal worms that fit on 1/8 inch shafts, at a reasonable price. Almost all sites I've seen supply only automotive-style parts, but of course  I don't need heat-treated steel. Or, for that matter, to lighten my wallet by $20 for a single worm. As for the worm itself, I don't have any other requirements other than that it needs to be metal (lots of strain on them) and have an inner-diameter of 1/8 inch. It doesn't have to have a set screw or fancy collar or anything- just a plain worm. I'd really like to find a store that sells these at a reasonable price, as I will need around 20 of them. Could someone help me out? Thanks

will this gear setup work for an RC car? Answered

For a while now i have been working on an rc car from almost scratch. i picked up a nice car for this on the clearance rack for $10, it already had a gearbox, but no gears. This was a pushtoy, after all. abyways, i found gears and filled the gearbox. will this setup of gears work well for speed in my car? or will there be more torque? for the best speed, what does my setup have to be like? (im using a high rpm motor, but not the one in the picture, the one in the picture absorbs way too much current)

Ideal Gear ratio?

Hello i am competing in a design challenge at school. were were each given a 9v 12000 Rpm Motor, the object of the challenge is to build a land vehicle that can go 10m as fast as possible. we will be holding a race on november 3rd to see who has designed the fastest vehicle. anyway my question for the community is using a 12000 rpm electric motor what would be the best gear ratio to use between the motor and the axle to optomise take off speed as well as having a high top speed. (if the gear ratio is to high then the car wont accelerate fast enough to low then the car wont have a fast enough top end) so basicly im looking for that perfect med ground. if anyone here has had much experience with gears and help would be great thanks (PS the vehicle cant be any biger then a vhs case but can be as tall as i want it)

How do I make a chain rotating around 2 gears complete a single rotation in exactly 60 seconds?

Hello everyone, I'd like to start off by declaring I am new to this website and have little understanding of technology as of yet. If my question has been answered before I apologize, but I haven't been able to find it in the forum. I've recently started tinkering with 3D printing as a bit of a hobby and am trying to make items that are more than just odd looking. One of the things I'd like to create is the following clock found on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4S2DSteBLDY Now this clock is made with Lego and its creator has labeled it as a 'proof of concept' as the 'lift' that delivers the ball, which should represent a minute, actually only counts ~55 seconds. For an actual clock I'd like it to have 60 seconds per minute and I am wondering if I can calulate the specs before I spend money on printed prototypes that dissapoint.. So using 2 Cogwheels/gears with a Chain that picks up a ball every 60 seconds (so a full chain rotation) based on an electric motor. I've found several 3-9v electric motors, but all seem to have rotations in the thousands whereas I'd expect to need like a few dozen rotations per minute(?). The clock I am trying to make is smaller than 20cm and I'd like for the chain to span a max 16cm in the final clock. Summed up: 1) How do I decide the right Gear? size/teeth? 2) What Electric motor/power source would suit a very low amount of rotations? 3) How can I time the motor/gears to complete a cycle in exactly 1 minute? Thanks in advance for taking a look ;)

How would I choose the most efficient electric motor to use as a generator for a small wind turbine?

I have a school project to build a small wind turbine (approx. 8" propeller diameter) to produce the maximum out DC voltage possible.  We are still deciding between a horizontal & vertical orientation (leaning towards vertical) but we need some help on understanding what we should look for in the motor/gear setup in order to produce the maximum possible voltage at relatively low wind speeds.  What should I look for and where would be a good place to buy/scavenge these parts? Thanks!

MGS5's iDroid - Can it be Built with Open Source Tech?

I can't get enough of Metal Gear Solid 5! It definitely deserves the 10/10 scores its received! But as cool as it would be to have a giant robot or even a Walker Gear that you and/or your enemies can pilot, I think the coolest thing to have from the game would be the "iDroid". If you havent played "The Phantom Pain" or "Ground Zeroes", the iDroid is a device Snake uses for multiple purposes. Some include: sending radio trasmissions and calling in supply drops or helicopters between the iDroid's location and Mother Base, Displaying a topographical satellite view of the area Snake is in, Organizing Mother Base staff, resources, R&D; projects, and playing music from cassette tapes found while on missions, Just to name a few. (bold font is to differentiate the uses) So is it possible to build a similar device using the open source technology of today? (minus the use of cassette tapes and a 2D holographic projection screen) I'm pretty confident that it can be done, but what do you guys think?

Gearbox Sharpener for knex

NOTE THIS IS A MODIFIED VERSION OF THE ONE I MADE LOOKING AT THE VIDEO ON YOUTUBE! IT WAS INTENDED AS A GEAR BOX BUT I ALSO TURNED IT INTO A SHARPENER AND A CHAIN SAW!!! It is hand cranked so... yeahThis is a knex sharpener tool that uses gear ratios to spin the rod at high speeds faster then a large yellow gear to small blue or grey gear ratio which is a 1/5 rotation ratio, for this gearbox though you achieve a magnificent 1/32 rotation ratio. One spin of the cog or yellow gear or starting gear whatever = end rotationWhen spinning at high speeds use a knife or sand paper to refine the sharpness of your rod to a dangerous needle if needed, or you just want to clean up a bad cut job from a pencil sharpener or knife cutter? This gearbox will smoothen out our refine your knex rod... NOTE THIS CAN SHARPEN THE ROD SO SHARP THAT IT IS DEADLY... K'nex Gear Ratios

What Ratios Do the K'nex Gears Produce? I have noticed there have been a lot of questions about gears for k'nex models and in particular, engines but there have been no documents or information on what the different gear combinations actually convert the input speed to. On the document attached there are the worked out combinations and what the speed produced is, but you will notice that the combinations only go up to three gears; this is because if you have only three different gears, you will have to repeat atleast one gear therefore the ratio would be able to be created using less gears as intended.  The new file has now been uploaded. I hope this helps. MattJoeP
