Ice Alaska Venue

The World Ice Art Championships are held in the Ice Park in Fairbanks, Alaska. In 2009 the venue may move to North Pole, Alaska. Each team is provided with a site on a looping trail through the park. The sites are surrounded by small black spruce are double as R.V. parking in the summer. In 1999 I rented chainsaws from the blue bus for the competition.

ice melt. NaCl, MgSO4, CaCl

Http://andthatsthewayitis.net/2011/05/17/salt-does-not-melt-ice/  thought about running a chainsaw to remove ice from roof gutters. rethought that. sodium chloride? corrode metal gutter and hurt plants. mag sulfate?   have it on hand, but above link indicates it wont work. would it work if baked to drive off h2o?  stuf comes hydrated. calcium chloride? directly on metal?

Solar Ice Maker

Tried hunting through the 'ables, and also hunted for it elsewhere. Has anyone done an Instructable on making a Solar Ice Maker? And if not, will anyone do it? I've got some ideas for trying to use it as part of a home cooling unit, but I don't know how to make it yet. Thus, modifying it seems kind of out of the question. Thanks for any help in advance.

What to do with portable ice maker?

So I have a portable ice maker that I dont want anymore. When I decide that I dont want something, I take it apart and keep parts that I think would be useful someday. But before I destroy it and keep some parts, does anyone have good ideas on what I can turn it into? or what I can build with the parts?

ICE or Medical Alert App for Android.

Hi folks. Following some recent life changing events I find myself in the market for a reliable ICE or medical alert app. There are hundreds available & understandably looking at the various web pages they all claim to be brilliant at the job & the best ever of their genre, unfortunately the self promoting reports I have read so far are frankly about much use as a chocolate kettle. I need something that someone has actually used & an honest opinion of its reliability it would be even better if it has been used on a Samsung Galaxy S2 but any info about something that you have experience of would be appreciated. Many thanks in advance. NG.

Maximum cooling efficency

I am looking to build a compact cooling unit, sized under 12"x12"x12".  I have seen and built 2 of the most common types of home made air conditioning units.... 1) Run air across a block of ice or other frozen object. 2) Blow a fan through a whirl (or other pattern) of copper tubing and pump very cold water through. So my question is which would offer more cooling capacity? The first option is cooling with Ice which is below freezing, with minimal surface area.  The second option is cooling with cold water but still above 32 degrees, could potentially have more surface area.

Propane torch

I've considered several times buying a propane torch to burn weeds in my driveway, or melt ice. The one I'd like to have looks like a cane with a threaded connector on the handle end to attach a propane bottle. They all seem overpriced to me and I've always wondered if I could make one cheaper than I could buy one. I can find the tubing I need but I've never been able to find the rest of the parts.  Any suggestions or would someone like to post an instructable showing how to make one?

Ice Alaska: Ice

Ice for the competition is collected form gravel pits around Fairbanks. In the summer gravel is mined from old river channels. The resulting ponds contain little organic material. Additionally during nine month winter, temperatures range from +40 to -60F (+5 to -50C). These factors combine to create exceptionally thick clear ice. The following are pictures of an iced over gravel pit.

Active cratering and near-surface water ice on Mars

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has taken some high-resolution pictures of brand new (two months old!) craters, where the impact exposed a layer of water ice just below the surface. Repeated pictures taken since the impact show the ice slowly sublimating, leaving behind the dark regolith.Read the whole press release and see some of the pictures here: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/MRO/news/mro-20090924r.html

Volume of gas from given weight of dry ice?

I'm rusty on basic chem. specifically, molarity, molecular weight... Dry ice, frozen CO2 is sold by the pound. I'd like to know by working formulas, how much volume a pound of dry ice will fill once it returns to gas. Carbon has molecular weight ~ 12.  Oxygen ~16.  But I don't recall what those numbers represent. One mole of gas occupies 22.4 liters, but how much does a mole of CO2 weigh?

The Ice King's Crown

It's my take on the Ice King's crown. For the "gold" part, I first tried gluing plastic paint buckets together, but they were too thin. I ended up covering the outside of one bucket in Bondo and then cutting in the peaks with a jeweler's saw. For the jewels, I cut a positive mold for each one out of a scrap of cutting board, then pressed them into clay to make a negative mold. Then I mixed up some casting resin and red dye and cast the jewels. They were epoxied onto the crown before I locked them in with Bondo bezels. If I were to do it again, I would use a more acute conic shape and make the peaks taller. I might also use fiberglass-reinforced Bondo and try a different gold paint. If I'm real adventurous I'll cast the thing out of scrap aluminum.

Newbie DIY icebox AC

I'm building a DIY, small AC unit using a desk fan, ice, and an ice box cooler. The fan I'm using is the one below. http://global.rakuten.com/en/store/e-kurashi/item/1468640/ I'm planning on making tubes connected to the sides. I will insert the tubes inside the cooling box (I'm not sure where is best... Above or below the ice?) I'm also thinking about where to put the holes for the air to go in. Should I put them below the ice, above the ice, or does it not matter? Also for the ice: salt water ice, or frozen bottles in salt water ice mixture, dry ice, or just plain ice? What do you think? I'm hoping to have the ice last the night.

Car, Cold, Ice, Snow and Wipers and better defrosting question

So if you live in a state that gets snow and ice one area you can never seem to get all the ice off, or the area that seems to build up ice easily is your wipers. Now my idea is like the rear window, when you turn on the defroster it warms up wires inside of the window that melts and defrostes the snow/ice/frost etc. A. Any ideas how I would make something like that, where I could turn on a switch that would be hooked to the battery with a fuse in the line where I could some how coil the wire around or under the wiper to melt the ice on the blade and in the area where the wipers are "stored" when turned off. B. Any different ideas then the one above?C. Any ways to make a roll of plastic or something with the wires held in place? All thoughts, ideas, diagrams and explanations welcome =)

Convert freezer ice maker into cold water dispenser

I'm wondering if anyone has ever converted an ice maker to dispense filtered tap water into the refrigerator.  I'm thinking a water line is already run into the ice maker so it could be split off and a hose could be run down into the refrigerator where you could push button dispense water or have it automatically fill a filtered water jug.  Let me know what you think.

Snap Circuits IC's, can I get the same functions in a small IC?

Hi. My kid (and I) have recently started messing around with Snap Circuits. We have a specific project in mind and want to design the circuit using Snap Circuits, then shrink it to fit in an Altoids box. Question: Is there a direct facsimile available of the integrated chips in the Snap Circuits box? Meaning, the same input voltage and current, where I can assemble all the matching components to my Snap Circuits circuit (switches, resistors, capacitors), and then just switch in the new (small) IC for where the Snap Circuits IC goes. This would also help with troubleshooting. Any thoughts? Here is the Elenco supplied schematic description of the Snap Circuits' IC: http://www.snapcircuits.net/downloads/ic_info.pdf Thanks!

Current in IC chip

Hello, It's a bit stupid to ask (I think), but essential to me. From all schematic I readed over intructables I never saw anything or anybody that cared for that. If a IC have a maximum and minimum current to respect ie: 6mA to 10mA, do we even care? Do I need to limit the current somehow? As I said, every schematic I readed never added any resistor or talked about anything relate to limiting the current on the VCC for the integrated circuit. I'm currently building a device that use one 555 timer IC in astable and a few others IC and they are all connected in parralel to the power suply. Thanks

Most have a 2 different strings, one with 5 characters and the other with more... Thanks!

TOYS with LED's

Hi, I recently bought one sword with LEDS and I want to know how they control the LEDS (it have different patterns of lighting). They use a PIC or IC ? I open the sword and have a very small PCB board with the IC cover with a black solid coating my questions are: The toys use and IC or PIC? What is the difference between IC or PIC's? They control also the voltage of the LED (different color of LED have different voltage)? The PIC/IC is programmed in which language? Where can I found more resources about this topic ? thank you for any help Chris SWORD http://www.rinovelty.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/products.thumbs/cat/114/page/2/filter/pricerange%7Cany%7Cany/Light_Ups_Light_Up_Swords
