how to change keyboard key assignments by rewiring keyboard

Trying to create a keyboard (steampunk design, but not necessary for you to know) with reassigned keys.  i would like to place symbols/icons on the keys and when someone is presented with an encoded message, they choose the appropriate keys and the message comes out in our normal alphabet.  if i don't reassign the keys, then someone familiar with the keyboard qwerty style can figure out the message without using the keyboard. i'm not very techy so pls. be as clear as possible.  i have found freeware out there that reassigns the keyboard keys but it is global and i need this to be keyboard specific since i'm designing the keyboard to look futuristic. it's for a scavenger hunt party.   thanks for any help out there.

How could I make a rigid USB keyboard fold in half?

No one seems to manufacture a full size 104(?) key keyboard which folds (the way the first IBM Thinkpad's notebook board did) so as to fit in a backpack or notebook case. I do not like to type on those rubber roll up keyboards. Any ideas on how I could build a folding keyboard? Thanks

(Cheap) Dedicated Hotkey Keyboard?

I'm doing a project where I need a device that can launch multiple programs from shortcuts on the desktop without a mouse or keyboard. I'd usually just get an external numpad and map the shortcuts to that, but the programs use the number keys, so I wouldn't want to map shortcuts to anything on the numpad.  I'm not exactly sure what to look for, but searching for "programmable keyboard" only returns a few (totally overpriced) results.  Does anybody have any ideas?  It doesn't necessarily have to be pretty, but that's always a bonus.

Palm Universal Wireless Keyboard disassembly?

I'm toying with the thought of adapting my Palm Universal Wireless Keyboard to work with Bluetooth.  Currently, it sends irDA data at 9600 baud.  This should be decodable using an xmega's usart which has an irDA mode.  One could even bypass the IR emitter, as there are exposed contacts in the base where one can catch the signals prior to irDA transmission (at 1.5V high  / 0.5V low levels). My question is: Does anyone know how to disassemble the keyboard?  I don't see any screws anywhere.

Backlighting a Keyboard

So a while back i purchased a keyboard that uses blue EL Wire to backlight the keys.  I like the blue, but i'd like to add some variety to it.  i'd like to add more different colors and a switch that toggles between the different colors (so i can change from blue to say red or green etc..) are there different voltages/currents for the wire that i should be concerned about? any other help/advice would be appreciated too.. thanks ahead of time!

Need help with my project- Virtual Keyboard

Hi, im working on this project called the virtual keyboard. the details can be found at  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_keyboard im facing a few problems, projection module requires for the use of a holographic plate to project the image of the keyboard on the surface but this stuff isn't available to me so i'm searching for alternatives, i've tried projecting the image using light and a plastic sheet instead but it did'nt work. i  also tried working with infrared light but the spot size is too small and would require a diffractive image to correctly project the image due to its compact siz

LED Keyboard

Ok guys and girls, I have a pretty neat idea I want to try. I was playing my favorite PC game at like 3 am and I wanted to play in the dark but I couldn't because my keyboard is black and I couldn't see it, so a great idea hit me... I want to pull apart my keyboard and but some LEDs in it so when I plug it in LEDs light up the board behind the keys. my only real problem though is knowing where to attach the wires from the LEDs to the board so I don't need and external power source... So if anyone is out there and have the same idea or maybe even have done this please let me know!!!

Restore Painted Letters on Keyboard Keys

White dry transfer letters can be purchased from: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Woodland-Scenics-Railroad-Gothic-Letters-Whit-WOODT507-/130726408706?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash;=item1e6fe6b202#ht_3538wt_785 for $6.67. The letters are typically used in model railroading. Clean the keyboard keys with a mild cleaner on a damp cloth. Wipe dry. Remove any partial letters with a pencil or ballpoint pen eraser. Apply the letters to the keys per the instructions on the package. A dull pencil works well. Lightly coat the key with clear nail polish. Should look like new and will last longer than the original.

Modding the sounds of a toykeyboard

At the current moment, I am in possession of a Casio Rapman (with VOICE EFFECTOR) that is in pristine condition. At the moment, my question is how would I go about changing the sounds of the different settings for the keyboard in order to make a 4-bit chiptune set  instead of the early nineties vision of what things should sound like. Anyone know their stuff?

Stencils for a keyboard

Hey all. Does anyone know of anywhere to get a good stencil for a keyboard? I have searched google and only find the sticker ones which won't work for the project I am working on. I have tried to cut out some with an exacto but it has not been very effective for that size of letters and is a rather daunting task on an already HUGE time sink of a project (over 100 man hours in already). I have been to a large local Micheals and the stencils they have are all to large for the keys. I tried hand painting them but this is being painted onto glass AND it is spherical to boot AND the paint I have for the glass is not very consistant and streaks unevenly on the stroke often especially when doing curved letters so that is out. The only thing I think would work is a decent vinyl stencil (or some other material which will flex to the curvature and adhere to the glass). If anyone knows of a place to get this or some technique that I have yet not thought of I would absolutely LOVE to hear it. Thanks.

simple electronic music keyboard

To all: I teach music in Elementary school. In my classes we play the recorder. In some of my classes I have some very special needs students. So they have been pushing on paper buttons that represent the recorder. They do a grate job. I would like to try and make something that can play the same pitch as our recorders and not have to change their set up very much if at all. Now they have a large black paper with circles of colored paper with note names on them. The push down on the note names as we (the rest of the class) plays the song. They are not able to play (hold the recorder) well enough to join in due to their special needs. They do seem to be getting it though. They can push the buttons at the right time. I thought if I could hook up something underneath their buttons with a small speaker etc........ What can I do that won't cost very much??? Thanks. Carmine

More things to do with old keyboards

External Keyboard running amuck on my ibook

Well last night I spilled some "soiled" rubbing alch in a cheapy usb keyboard of mine for my ibook, I quickly took it apart and wiped it up, not much actually got in there between the contact, and all the kkeys still work. Now I've restarted my ibook twice because the keypresses are triggering shortcuts, without holding the apple or ctrl key down, and no I didn't lose any rubber cups in the keyboard. This is driving me nuts as right now I'm typing on my ibook's keyboard on a 70 degree slant....sigh woe is me, help please?

Antiquated keyboard conversion

Alright so, I've recently aquired a  keyboard from a desktop computer made in 1983 and I fell in lovewith it at my first sight of it. However I am a lot younger than this keyboard so I know nothing about it so I was wondering if any of you could give me any background info on this  keybaord and and any thoughts on whether it would be possible for me to convert it so i could plug it into my slightly outdated desktop computer and how i would go about doing so. Pictures  below.

Touch screen Keyboard

Hey :) i have a sweet idea of building a touch screen keyboard that's separate from the monitor. i kno their are already some on the market but it be way cooler if i could build one myself. after doing some research i found the easiest way with the most versatility would be to have a touch screen ontop of a display and have the display then attached to a chip which would relay the image of the custom keyboard. the keyboard then would be hooked up to the computer and would function like a normal keyboard but soundless. :D the problem in all this planning is 1 i don't know how to put everything together, even though Ive been reading up , my knowledge of hardware design is minimal and 2 i don't know how to write programs, but if its any consolation im teaching my self simple programming like C++ but i doubt that will help. anyways , any suggestions Thanks a million Justin

RFID Keyboard (Musical)

Hi there, I'm currently doing a University course in Digital Art and was wondering how possible it would be to produce an RFID keyboard (of the musical kind). In the lectures we've been studying about tags and readers which is all new to me, but I've been looking at a few different examples which use sound as their basis and was wondering if I could get something like a keyboard working. I've done a quick Google search and nothing has come up with regards to tutorials or anything related to producing something like this so I guess I'm the first to try it? I also looked on Ebay at parts and for an RFID reader and some tags it comes to around £10-15 which isn't too bad. For the keyboard part I was thinking of creating my own keys so that the instrument could be played with hands or feet as opposed to fingers (making it easier to play?). What do you guys think? Is it possible? Cheers, Andrew. P.S. Apologies for the lack of diagrams/pictures but this is just a quick thought and wanting to run it by someone before getting serious about it :).

Wired to wireless keybord conversion

Hello, It happens to have a wireless mini keyboard with touchpad, like the one in the photo ( not this model, but something like this). The problem is that I did a terible mistake and I bent it a litle (some milimeters) and after that it keeps sending repeated characters. I do no think I can fix it. I like to convert and keep alive old things so I had the idea to use the RF modules of the keyboard and make an old PS2 or USB keybord wireless. Do you think that there may be a chance I could do it? Hope you will come with some ideas

mini organ from harmonica

I  had an idea other day concerning harmonica.  Why couldn't one take a harmonica, run air tubing from an air source, one tube to each hole of the harmonica, use some sort of valves that can be triggeered by a keyboard, Voila, mini organ.  I am not interested in doing this myself but I think it could be pretty cool.  For one thing I think it would make a harmonica capable of playing multi note chords.  Some that would be impossible to play by mouth.

Program to interpret and send keystrokes to the system.

I have been doing a lot of reading up on "chorded" keyboards, especially the 5 key variety and I think it sounds really interesting.  I was thinking about toying around with the idea but decided I didn't want to build a standalone device.  I was thinking about a program that could be run to interpret the key presses on a standard keyboard and send new signals to the system, similar to a key mapper and was wondering where to start.  It needs to be able to run in the background while I do other stuff so I can use it to enter data in other programs (web browser, word editors, and such). I am pretty fluent in Java and C++ and I know a little python.  I'm not asking you to work out the logistics of it for me, I am really just wondering where to start.  If someone could point me in the right direction (should I write a Java program or an executable in C++, how might i send keystrokes to the system, etc.)
