disability challenge: rebuild my legs.

Just thought it was worth asking with the wealth of expertise and knowledge on here if anyone could offer any help/idea, or any words of wisdom in regards to getting me back on legs and out of my wheelchair, I will gladly consent to being a guinea pig (within reason obviously! lol).   O.K. a little bit of me & my background. I'm a 46 year old male living in the U.K, 12 years ago through no fault of my own I was ploughed down a street by a car. this left me with a compound fracture of my left leg that developed a further complication that resulted in me losing the leg below the knee the resulting infections meant it wouldn't heal . the right leg suffered 14 breaks between the knee and ankle, the ankle was broken and most of the foot. the metalwork in the leg had problems it eventually bent. i put every penny into an operation to remove a large chunk of my lateral muscle to be transplanted to the left stump to get it to heal and to have the faulty metal top of the metalwork replaced, but and I kid you not, the bolt in the right leg had the head taken off!! meaning the bolt would have to be drilled out but that would shatter the leg meaning i'd lose that leg too, the op on the stump was a failure. so what i'm hoping is some of you super brains could help design/devise a kind of prosthesis and a caliper type erm... thing, for the other leg. well I'll upload some pics and a bit more about me tomorrow. thanks for reading guys & girls.

Beware Obrary

I was approached this week by a member of staff at Obrary, asking me if I would let them share one of my projects. So far, so good; I gave permission, as long as they agreed to abide by the license I use to publish my projects; BY-NC-SA.  This is the default licence for Instructables, and allows others to share your work as long as they quote the source, share their work under the same licence, and do not profit commercially from the project. Be aware that, if Obrary share your projects, they will share them under the licence of BY-CC-SA, allowing other people to profit from your work. When I discovered this, I agreed, as long as I got to share in the income being generated by my work. Obrary went quiet. If you want to share your projects through Obrary, that's up to you (a quick search shows that at least one Instrucabler has allowed their work to be shared), but you need to remember that their business model involves monetising your work, without any of the income coming to you. They profit, you lose out. You have been warned.

Wheel Leg All terrain design

I came up with a wheel leg design a while ago http://us.mindstorms.lego.com/nxtlog/myprojectdisplay.aspx?id=d5808c2d-b658-4b8e-b0f2-06c6152a2f66. Vex came up with this product and it looks a lot like my design. I think this would be a great design for an mars rover. I got the idea from rex robots. I thought, " Why not put more of those on?"

leg and arm weights

Will someone write up the plans for a HEAVY-DUTY ankle and wrist weight. I have been searching online for a company that will make custom weighted wrist and ankle weights but there aren't any. I'm wanting to make a 50 lb for the arms and 100 lb for the legs. I'm thinking along the lines of several iron or lead bars strapped together with a nylon fiber or other strong material. I've only ever done projects in high-school, where materials were provided, so I don't really know where to get the materials needed. Please help.

Giant crane arrives to help build new bay bridge

A 328 foot crane built by ZPMC near Shanghei, China capable of lifting 1800 tons at a time was brought into the Port of Oakland two weeks ago aboard a partially submersible transport ship. It is the largest marine crane to ever work on the west coast.I had been noticing the absolutely massive red white and blue crane on my commute over the bridge to work for a few days, but was unable to find any info on it. Thankfully a project associate from the Public Information Office of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Seismic Safety Retrofit Projects was nice enough to email me back about my query with the relevant info. From there, it was easy to pick up the internet news trail.SF Gate Article - One big crane, coming upThe San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge Project

OAWR Legs Lock Up

I'm currently assembling an Obstacle Avoiding Walking Robot, however I find the legs keep locking up.  Basically, as I move the legs the nuts are tightening to the point where the legs won't move any more.  I have washers in all the correct places so must be missing something else. Any tips on how to avoid this? Thanks. James.

It only has 2 positions (on and off).  Could anyone let me know how to use it? Thanks,  H4ZZ

Mouse IR detector Challenge

Anybody know how to determine which legs are which on the IR detector (double transistor) in old-school mice? One leg is common and the other two legs are emitters. Is there a test I can perform with a needle type VOM that could identify the leads? These three legged components are very common and can be used to build really simple and cheap data acquisition of rpm using the microphone jack and 5 volts from a USB port. One leg has extra metal and is likely the common. Still I would like to know if anyone has a test procedure. Thanks to all and keep repurposing everything in your path. It just feels good.

Custom Glow Table: need ideas!

Hello everybody! First of all i'd just like to say I just made an account but have been using this site for years and love you guys =] I have this idea for a tv stand / table and I am stuck. attached is a drawing of my table (tried my best). The idea is a table made out of a recycled door as the table top, clear 6'' diameter and 2' long tubes as the legs, a liquid that reacts to blacklight inside the legs of the table such as laundry soap to fill the inside of the legs, and one small waterproof fan in each of the front legs to create a vortex inside the tube. So essentially I want a table with legs made of clear tubes with a glowing tornado in each front leg and a black light mounted under the table to light em' up! I need help figuring out what would be the best / cheapest material to use to create the front legs. Also what type of fan to use that is waterproof and will have enough torque to turn the water. Any help is appreciated!!

USB Hub Spider

Here's a variation on my USB Hub Monster that I'm working on. I've added a couple of legs that have alligator clips on it to get to the full eight legs for true spidery creepiness. The legs are nearly done, but the body is practically untouched. Expect to see some glowing red eyes when it's done. There's another USB creature I'm working on right now as well, but it's a little shy.

Jake the Peg Halloween prop

I'm looking to create a hinged leg to use in a "Jake the Peg" Halloween costume prop. If you've never heard of Jake the Peg, here's a link  to the famous Rolph Harris skit. I know he's using a false hand on the right side (his right) so that he can control the extra leg, but I'm unsure on how to create the hinged effect. (It's the bending of the leg that makes it so realistic!) I was thinking of using something like a bike handlebar end with a handbrake lever to pull a cable that would draw the leg up, but how would I get it to spring back to the straight position? (And when it's in that position, it would need to support some weight like a cane) What should the leg be made of? There has got to be a better way to do this. The illusion is fantastic, but there are no articles anywhere on how it is done. Thanks for any help anyone may have.

What to use as a pivot? eyelet, hollow shaft, hollow nut & bolt? Help

I am looking for a permanent way to hold together a leg between 2 plastic pieces. I want the shaft that goes in the hole to be hollow, cause i plan to pass something through it. I have attached an image with the dimensions. The leg (center) is aluminum and the plastic parts on either side are delrin. I was thinking of eyelets, a shaft or a hollow nut and bolt with thread fastner, but I think all will have to be custom made. I want the fastner that holds the leg and the plastic together to also help in restrictive rotation so that alittle force is required to rotated the leg about the hollow pivot point (the shaft). Does anyone have any ideas of how i can do this or any better methid? Thanks for all your help in advance.

Beer cap coffee table need hinges

So i want to make a coffee table/beer pong table.  like this  http://media.pongalong.com/images/bestbeerpongtables/BudLightBeerPongTable.jpg So it is going to be 3' x 8' and i want to have 2 sets of legs underneath of it.  A short set for the coffee table and another set that are taller to use it as a beer pong table, or just a regular table for that matter.   So my main question is where can i find locking hinges for the Table legs?  I have found some, but don't seem to be very heavy duty.  I want them to be able to lock the legs in the horizontal position to hide them under the table while the other legs are locked in the vertical position. Also does anybody have any suggestions for cheap fiberglass or resin to coat the bottle caps.  Didn't realize how expensive the stuff is.  Cheaper is better.

And they charge you only $70 per leg. I showed up in Boston 40 minutes before a flight, and got to San Francisco that same night, in two legs, with no delays. Do it! Travel the country! Check out their blackout dates before you go. Some ("long haul") legs cost $100 instead of $70.http://www.airtranu.com/airtran_u.aspx

Increase V.Leap

I was think of injecting plastic sponge filled with water as the sole of a basketball shoe, hoping the water pressure could help to increase the leg power and increase the vertical leap. Meaning : using plastic sponge Or rather i think of another alternative, which is to use static electricity to store inside the shoe, which later will transfer from the shoe to the leg of human, and hopefully increase the vertical leap.

DIY Hacks for Tiny Bathroom (solving the world's serious issues)

We all know it's a major problem circumnavigating the globe: tiny bathroom living.  My burning question is... How is one supposed to shave their legs in a shower-stall-only bathroom?  Must we sit on the floor with our legs hanging out of the shower just so we can function? Is there no one who can stop this injustice!? What DIY hack can YOU come up with to solve this ever-growing epidemic? (Or what do YOU do to accomplish a streamlined look?)  Save the hairy legs! Thank you.

Make the best of what you've got

Sometimes life deals you a bad card and you have to make the best of it. My father got polio in his right hand at a young age. It got him out of the army, but he had to learn to become left-handed in the process. This guy suffers from polio as well, but has been able to do this cool dance that's earned him a living entertaining tourists in Uganda. And up in Canada there's Lazy Legs who has a muscle disorder in his legs.

Building A Table

So I want to build me a table for my patio. I found one that I really like, but I have some questions about it. The table is in the pictures below. Its legs are made of hard-fired terra-cotta, its a chimney flue. I was wondering if the table top would be sturdy enough on it. Like if someone was leaning on one end of it would thje other end raise up. Does any one have any suggestion for a nice table similar to this one, or something else I could use for the legs?

Wetsuit for 5 year old With fins/paddles

My nephew was born with severely clubbed feet, and lobster hands. After several surgeries he has ended up with with above the knee amputations, and tri-fingers with a very strong grasp. He receives intensive therapy and support, so he gets all the recreation he needs, plus occupational therapy. Well, he was recently introduced to a swimming pool and loves it. unfortunately, because of his amputations, he buoyancy is all screwed up. I would like to take a wet suit, and modify it to include a hard silicone leg prosthesis, and swim fins, and gloves that fit his fingers, with webbing, similar to what long distance endurance swimmers and navy seals use. I figure I can use off the shelf neoprene for the wet suit, and take very good measurements for the gloves. I have made patterns for outfits before, so I can layout the pieces, and have my wife or mother stitch them together. (they are great with sewing machines) For Bouyancy, I was toying with the idea of air bags made from cordura nylon and fillable from the outside with air attachment nozzles, and stitched inside the legs. They would be surrounded by hard plastic similar to the shape of his prosthetic legs he is getting used to. The torso of the wet suit would be stitched to the legs, so when his torso grew, I would cut along the seam, replace the torso as needed. Anything you guys think I am missing? I will start posting sketches and renderings as I get started on this project...

Need Animatronic / Robotic Costume Help

Hello all. I'm working on a project that I hope someone here can help me with. It's very complex and going to take a few years for me to complete. The project is an animatronic / robotic (either or both) centaur costume. The idea is to make it a one-person costume where the back walks with me as I move. It will also have certain preset-up movements linked to trigger points on the body. Such as, were someone to touch the rear-end, the tail will flick at them. I also want to be able to lie the body down on the floor while I'm in costume so I don't kill my legs standing all day. I'm playing with either having individual motors at each of the joints in the hind legs or using a cable, pully and gear system attached to the front legs (my legs) to drive them. I already have some drawings of my ideas that I've been working on but, since I've never done something quite this complex before, I'm hitting a bit of a road block. To be more specific, I have no idea what size actuators, servos or motors I'm going to need to make this thing move as naturally as possible. The frame will be aluminum and the hooves will be pine with some light stuffing and fake fur over it. I have no idea how heavy it will be. I will add the drawings as soon as I have them finished. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone interested in table legs made from books?

I made this table for the art section where I work, and I'm mostly just wanting to show it off because it took forever and I think it turned out pretty well. But I'm also wondering if anyone would like to see how I did it before I get involved in another big project, haha. I was really stupid and didn't take pictures the first time. :) (The weird sign on top of it is basically explaining that it is sturdy even though it's a little wobbly just because of the fact that it's made out of Reader's Digest Condensed volumes. :P)

Desk Support

Hey boys and girls. Over the past couple of weeks (due to work, mostly) I've been building this computer desk, the original here, and a slightly modified one. I've built it using 3/4" MDF and have it painted a gloss black, similar to the modified version. I'm currently stuck on what to do for support. In the original, he uses file cabinets and some scrap material for supports. In the slightly modified version, he uses desk legs from Ikea.I'd like to do something simple, but I'm kinda lost. I've had two ideas floating around my head for a while but I was wondering if their were any other suggestions y'all might be able to throw at me. First, I was thinking about making legs out of chain-link-fence style posts. Then I had the idea to suspend it. Attaching a cable to the front "bulge" on each side (see pic.), and attach the other end of cable to the wall. Using a piece of 2x4, or the like, screwed to the studs in the wall to support the back edge's. (I hope that makes sense). I'm thinking suspending it might work, but would require a bit more work. The idea of a floating desk sounds really cool, but I can't think of another way to achieve the effect.Any thoughts on getting this thing off the floor, minus the saw-horses, will be greatly appreciated.
