Luminodot: Next Gen Lite Brite

The humble Lite-Brite has long been overdue for a modern reboot. We made our own Giant Lite-Brite, but Bandai is now coming out with the Luminodot which has a 70x50 grid, closely packed lights, and the ability to animate the backlight. The cost is $100 and sadly it's only available in Japan. Link

Ultimate Frisbee Lite.

Ultimate Frisbee rules run to twenty pages, so I came up with this for my classes. I thought I'd share it, but I couldn't see the point in posting an Instructable when my school's rules require written permission from every parent involved before pictures of kids go online, so I just took advantage of Rachel fixing the topic-posting bug. Indoor Ultimate Frisbee Lite (“Indoor Lite”) 1. The play's the thing: all players and observers must keep to The Spirit Of The Game. Teams shoukd self-referee. If any dispute requires a decision by a bystander or observer, that decision is binding. 2. The game may be played with and disc agreed upon by both team captains. 3. Teams of up to 8, with a maximum of 5 players on the field. 4. The game continues for either an agreed length of time, or to an agreed score (for example, “first to five”). 5. Before play, team captains agree the end zones and playing field, and choose ends to defend. An indoor game has no “out of bounds”, and play continues as normal if the disc bounces off walls, ceiling or fixtures in the room. 6. When the opposing team gains possession of the disc, it is called a turnover. 7. Ultimate is non-contact sport – intentional obstruction of, or contact with another player will result in a turnover. If a turnover is the result of a rule-break, the disc is handed to the nearest opposing player. 8. At the start of play, each team gathers in their end zone. One captain throws the disc towards the opposing team. Nobody may enter the playing field until the disc passes the half-way mark. 9. A point is scored when the disc is caught in (or above) the opposing team's end zone. 10. After a point is scored, all players return to their own end-zone, and the player who caught the disc to score the point throws the disc to re-start the game. 11. A player in possession of the disc may not move, but may pivot on one foot. “Travelling” results in a turnover. 12. The player in possession of the disc must throw the disc within five seconds – any near-by player may count to five out loud. Holding the disc past five seconds is a turnover. 13. If the disc hits the ground, possession passes to whichever team did not touch it last – if team A throws it and nobody catches it, team B gain possession. If team A throw the disc, team B block its flight and it then hits the ground, then team A regains possession. If team A throw the disc, but team B catch the disc in the air, team B gains possession and play continues. 14. If two players catch the disc, whoever caught it first gains possession. If two players catch the disc simultaneously, a single round of rock, paper, scissors determines possession. 15. Unlimited substitutions may be made after any point is scored. House Rules. Because Indoor Lite can be played in a wide range of venues, typically school gyms or halls, some “house rules” may be developed, such as “if the disc goes through the basket ball hoop, that's a point as well” or “if the disc falls behind the vaulting horse, possession turns over and everybody goes back to their ends to start play again”. Before play begins, any new or visiting players must be made aware of the house rules. I also blogged this.

just a thought... (ds projector)

Just a thought i had when i saw all of these led projectors on here. and then i saw a ds sitting on the table then i though, what if there was a such a thing as a ndsl projector?! how i believe it would be contructed, at  least the case anyways, would be to detach the top screen from the bottom. then to use the screen as you would any other in a diy projector, keeping in mind that it has to stay connected to the ds. then build half a ds arcade stand for the ds, and build the rest of the projector. would this be plausible? or would it be impossible?

Peggy: Like Lite-Brite with LEDs

Evil Mad Scientist has been really putting out the LED projects lately. They were selling a Mooninite kit, then they had pink LEDs (yum), and now they have info on how to make Peggy, an LED display where you simply plug them in and watch them glow. This 25 x 25 grid allows you to worry about what image you want to glow instead of how they're going to be wired up. Evil Mad Scientist page

Nintendo DS Lite Not Working

So, I have had my Nintendo DS Lite for a few years and used to play it a lot until 2011-2012. I finally decided to start playing it again a few days ago when it stopped working. I know it isn't dead because I charged it completely before trying to use it. When I turn it on, the green light turns on but the screen remains black. Also, the screen has turned on once or twice but it's currently not working.

Da-lite Silver-lite manual projector screen: Repair help!

So today I totally scored at Goodwill with not one but TWO projector screens!  One is your typical matte white but the other is a silver screen by Da-lite!  (well, both are da-lite) And I was DALITEd (see what I did there?) to find them so cheaply!  So purchased them I did.  But getting home I discovered the silver screen projector (the case a beautiful teal color!) had some rips.  Luckily not across the main viewing portion but along the rails that A-roll it up and B-keep it from going into the case.  I managed to fix the tears along B but A I'm aware has some sort of tension spring dohickey that is only kept wound by the end caps!  And to fix that tear I'll definitely have to completely disassemble the thing.  (to fix the tears I've used a combination of hand sewing and shoe-goo on the underside, since it repairs vinyl.) I can't quite find a repair/replace/fix guide that even comes close.  I was hoping to come across a guide replacing the material at least but that was a no-go.  Closest thing I found was to carefully take off the ends and with the screen rolled up screw back one end (left) and wind the rod back with the other (right) before screwing it back in.  Guide didn't really specify my model though or even go into detail about the specific tension mechanism, so I'm doubtful at best on wanting to try it out. (and heaven forbid lose a finger!)  Not to mention mine pulls up instead of pulls down, so orientation seems like a toss up. Anyone have any suggestions for a DIY approach to this?

LED Help Needed

OK, here's what I'm thinking. I wanna lite the bottom edge of a piece of plexiglass so it will lite the edge all the way around bright green. I have enough of the super small SMD LEDs. I wanna be able to do them a in single row using 30 or so of them end to end. Is this possible, if so how would I get the right voltage for this? And would I need to use resistors?

Old NDS Lite Speakers: Reusable?

I've got an old DS here. The connector for the ribbon cable got damaged, so it's mostly just spare parts in case something goes wrong with my new one. Anywho, I was sorting through what's here, and I can't help but wonder about these little speakers. They aren't fried or anything. Could they possibly be salvaged and used in a project? If so, what? I dunno. A project that makes use out of salvaged NDS parts that doesn't necessarily involve just rebuilding a broken DS would be interesting. Any thoughts?

NEW NINTENDO DS

Nintendo announced a new DS model at their conference. It's called the Nintendo DSi and has a few improvements over the Nintendo DS Lite. One, media support with an SD card reader and two built in cameras. Unfortunately, it does lack a GBA slot. There is also an online store for it in the same vein as the Wii Shop Channel and uses the same currency for DSiWare. Software on it will cost 0, 200, 500 or 800 points. Essentially it is just an improved version of the DS Lite, but with these improvements, it may well be worth getting. It is set for release in Japan on November 1st 2008 with US and EU releases to follow in Early 2009. What do you guys think?

I have an old DS, and it hit me: could a nintendo DS or DS Lite be converted intto a PDA-style storage/ organizing device? The original DS size seems like it could be made into one of these. Maybe it could still run DS games. Does anyone think this is possible? Can you explain how? And what do you think its capabillities would be?

Please help me solve this led thought

Hey every one I'm a tinker'er and well a dork lol . I am trying to make a device and I have 90% OF IT finalized .I wont fully explain what I am trying to build but i will give you a break down . enclosure box that holds 9 volt battery , brought down to 6 volts send through sound sensor  release 6 volts out . 2    3.3 leds   under powered at 3.0 each here's wjhat im trying to do = get leds to be independtly lit . I was thinking of using 2 sound sensors at different "levels" so it would throw the leds at different times . leds would be on oposite sides of the project box ... But wondering if there is a better way to use one sensor and allow both leds to alternate / also possible alternate duration . the effect im trying to get is lets say your in a 0 lite room turn this on and based on sound levels it would throw leds almost like lightning ??? it would have to alternate sides and alternate extend of liting times . Hope this is making sense :/

Features sound effects, 40 stages, 7 well designed levels and a bright and funky colourscheme! ===Download!=== Size: 42mb (approx) To run this you will need PowerPoint 2000 or above (I think older versions WILL work, but I'm not 100% sure) with Microsoft 95 or higher as your Operating System. So far I know this works with: Vista, XP and 95. To download the file click the link below: DOWNLOAD There are no viruses/spyware/sh!t that messes up your computer in the file. Nintendo DS / Original Game Boy Mod

Don't know if anyone ever thought about doing this. I searched the site and didn't see anything like it so I thought I would put the idea out there. Just wondering what people thought about the prospect of modding an original Game Boy to be the shell for a Nintendo DS or DS Lite. I personally think there is enough room to do. I would try to do it myself, but I just don't have the techinical know-how or a spare DS.

But, I have not been able to find a motion activated laugh box. Maybe, someone can post instructions on how to make one. I could build it. Thanks

Would these mods be cool?

Hey I have some ideas for a DS mod, a Game Boy mod and a NES mod. What do you think? 1. DS lite in a DVD case (so it can be stored on a shelf) with solar cells instead of the li-ion battery 2. Game Boy in a scientific calculator (GB Pocket, of course) 3. Working NES console around the size of a double bed (with removeable controllers and games to the same growth ratio) It would be a real help if you could post comments on what you think (constructive critisism only)

Game Ideas?

I have been thinking about designing a game. here are some ideas I've been kicking around: Post-apocalyptic themed RPG: Based loosely on Discovery's new series, The Colony, you would play a character and experience his struggles to survive a cruel and lawless world. Final fantasy styled game. Zelda Platformer: It would incorporate the 'hoppy-jumpy' gameplay of the Mario Bros. Platform games with the dungeon-questing and puzzle-solving of the Legend of Zelda Titles. Mario RTS: Simply combine the gameplay of C&C with the themes of the Mario Brothers. nothing more to say. I am using Game Maker 7 Lite. Thoughts and suggestions are welcome and appreciated!

Power Strip USB Charger Combo

I'm currently building a bedside table, which will include a charging station for 2 laptops, 2 DS lites, 2 Iphones/pods, a palm phone, and rechargeable batteries. This means that there will be a need for at least 5 usb ports, and 4 mains outlets. I was wondering what peoples ideas were for generating these sources of power.  I know I could use a power strip and a usb hub with a wall adapter, but I was wondering what other more sleek ideas people had.  I have everything necessary to build my own systems, including a 5v power source; but I posted in the hope someone might have some really sleek and elegant solution for me. Winning prize goes to the person with the sub $10 solution!

GBA owns the DS!

Hello? What happened? The PSP and DSi are all well and good but in my mind GBA games own them all! Sure, most are 2D and they cannot compete graphically with it's bigger cousins, but I would own my Gameboy Micro over a DS anyday (and I can say this genuinley because I had enough money to buy either a DS lite or a Gameboy micro and I chose the micro). I say this because compare a Sonic advance game to a Sonic Rush game. From a neutral perspective I found Sonic advance much more enjoyable than the DS version: It is simple (only 1 screen to focus on!) and none of these faffy side missions. And I would rather play SMB advance 3 than play some downgraded NFS for PSP. And let's not forget the biggest advantage of the GBM: PORTABILITY! It is the only true pcket console.

Cadsoft EAGLE Schematic and PCB editor

Cadsoft is a German company that is a veritable mecca of software distribution enlightenment. In addition to the reasonably-priced professional PCB design packages ($1200), they have freeware, lite, non-profit, and other intermediate licenses. Their software runs under windows, linux, and MacOSX. It's slightly quirky, with a steep (but not too high) learning curve on the front end, but from most reports it is not any more so than other professional CAD packages. They have online support forums that are active from both the company and other users, the package is under current development and gets better with each release. A number of PCB fabricators will accept their CAD files directly. It's good stuff.Use it. Propagate it. Buy it when you "go pro."There are several EAGLE related instructables now:Schematic EntryCreate PCB from SchematicMaking PCBs for HobbyistsCreating Library PartsIn theory, this forum is a place for all the little questions that don't rate an instructable on their own, or a gathering place for info destined to future instructables, and stuff like that.

Small Solar panel(s) with output equivalent to a good USP port

Hello all, Seems like this should be a good competition type project.  Being a hiker and bicycle traveler, I would love to have a small, (read lite), solar panel that would keep my electronics powered up.  The electronics would be, a phone, front and rear light or headlamp, a small 7" tablet, and maybe a small mp3 player.  Ideally the output would equal that of a good USB port, 5volt and ~2amps.  The charger for tablet states 2.1amps.  Sorry I'm not dialed in what ideal amperage would be, but I do know that not less than 2amps, right? Anyways would love to see a competition among the peeps all dialed into this with the parameters stated above.  I'm sure other parameters would be worked out too.  If there's something out there in the real world that maybe you think would suit my needs, lets see what there is out there!  Feel free to post up.

alternative ignition of thermite

Allright im looking for information on a number of different ways to ignite thermite. sure we've all heard of magnesium and yes it's usually third or fourth time is the charm also potassium permanganate which is pretty cool too and the ever popular sparkler of course lots of companies have taken out the magnesium chlorates and perchlorates from these sparklers and are now selling crappy ones without hazmat fees for them so they don't work worth a crap. i read an article from a guy stating he used simple visco fuse to light it even though ive heard it won't work but perhaps it depends on the mesh as in much finer. i use the dark german aluminum about 625 mesh and it will coat any and everything it touches. really though guys let's come up with some ways to lite thermite outside of tradition and share these methods of doing so along with how to obtain materialsin conventional and unorthodox ways because without frst time reliable ignition it's just no fun. also the first fire mix, much like the thermite ignition mix at united nuclear what exactly is it made of and how are some ways the monetarily cahllenged can obtain it and of course the not so challenged.

Re-Use, Individual Cells from 18V NiCad

Seems that with a bit of randomnity in mfging, some cells in an 18V battery might fail before others. With that in mind, I'm trying to re-use individual cells after a pack craps out.  Test 1  Battery pack from a "drill master" which I got for  ~$2 at a thrift store. Google informs that this is a harborfreight tool, so expectations are low.  Upon disassembly of the pack, 1 of the spot-weld connections between cells had broken.  Since I don't currently have a 1.5v source, I'm using a 3v  source to charge 2 cells in series. Only charging for a few minutes at a time. Currently, this 2 cell set will light a couple xmas lites for a few minutes after charging for a few min. I'm uncertain of the calibration of my v-meter, but it currently indicates 2.65v for these 2 cells. Depending upon the source, NiCads should max out at 1.45 to 1.65 v per cell. Test 2: Pending- Ryobi drill batteries I'm uncertain how to get a good read on the accuracy of my meter without a high-end meter to compare against. Suggestions? Hopefully, I can find a proper 1 cell nicad charging device.  Thoughts? concerns? insights?
