How would I do that?

Xvid & MP3

These two seems to be the most popular video "backup" codecs on the internet (if you know what I mean). Since I started playing the pirate game on the internet, I always wanted to transcode all my video files using these two. Over the past two years, I have probably wasted several gigabytes of Google's bandwidth in a frustrating and tiring search to find an easy way to do this. If anyone have found one or a nice compact free program, please please come forward and help a brother out. If you know a why to do so with VLC, it would be da boom.

MP3 books to ZUNE

I just got a Zune, I like to listen to recorded books while I work, which is reasonably easy to do with the Zune interface software and most books on CD. THE PROBLEM is books recorded as MP3 files. Strangely enough here is an "MP3 Player" that cannot handle MP3 data directly... At least this is my experience so far. Placing a MP3 recorded book CD in the drive and while I CAN listen to it on the laptop using Zune's Software interface. Trying to transfer the files to the Zune unit creates error files that are unusable and so far I have not been able to remove from the Zune. Admittedly I'm a newbe to the Zune but have been using computers since the Atari 800 came out too many years ago for me to admit to...ANY help would be appreciated. Possibly there's something I just have not found as yet.

Mp3 Player Mod?

I'm not really sure if this is the right forum to talk about this. I did go to Tech, but I saw a topic about MP3 player Skin Mods here, so I thought if I could ask for some help. I have an Mp3 Player, it's cute, runs on AAA batteries and an SD Card. Here is the problem though. It lacks any sort of Display.  Like it's one of those screen less ones you find.  I do have a spare screen lying over from a cellphone, so I was wondering if it could be possible to modify the inner workings of my MP3 Player so that I can finally see the name of the song I'm listening to. xP

MP3 unit for car

Hi everyone, I was wondering if I could get some help with a project I'd like to make. My truck's stereo died, and instead of getting another stereo, I'd like to make a unit that just uses my MP3 player. Junkyard stereos are of dubious condition, and usually overpriced, and I'm too cheap to pay for a new stereo. I never really used the radio or CD player on the old unit; I just want basically a jack for a MP3 player/laptop, volume control, and power switch, powered by 12V and able to be hooked up to 4 speakers. I have some basic electronic knowledge, but not enough to make something like this. Could someone maybe, possibly, provide me with a diagram or ideas to get this started? Thanks a lot!

What sort of mp3 output quality would a radio station be? (Please) Answered

My car stereo chews up the cd's - pretty much because the shock absorbers are rubbish. Way to go, Chevrolet... So I got a car fm transmitter that plays mp3s - and it's great stuff. Yay! (and cheaper than new shocks, too!) However, I want to cram as many mp3s on the player as I can (it's only 4gb) so I'm going to convert my mp3s to a lower quality. I guess as I'm happy with  records on the car radio then I reckon I don't really need cd-quality mp3s. (I can listen to hi-fi at home ;-) I did a quick Google, but found no answer to my question - what sort of mp3 output quality would a radio station be? I'm happy to reduce the frequency sampling as well as the bit-rate. Many thanks guys.

Cheap way to make an arduino play multiple sounds (MP3/WAV)?

First off, I know that doing this straight forward is not possible. The are a few ways I think I can do this. The main one I'm looking at is to have a MP3/WAV board hooked up to a speaker. I'll have two setups, one that is set to have three sounds (start, stop, fire, and only one of those three sounds would play at a time) and the second setup would have an alarm (this would have to play at the same time as the fire sound).  The issue I'm running into now is that I would like to have this all on the same PCB, as I plan to make a barebone arduino.  I'm sure there are better ways to do this, or that someone has a schematic to make just the sound board. Either will work. Thanks in advance!

9V battery and LM7805 power a audio AMP failled? Answered

Hi,All I use a 9V battery to pass power through a LM7805 to an arduino pro mini,a MP3 module,it works fine.later i am not satisfied with the low voice of the speaker, then i added an Amplifier module.the AMP module is a PAM8403-5V(could be USB powered),but the speaker produce weird sound.  it seemed the PWR was not enough,so i added an extra 5V supply to the PAM8403 module, this time it sounds fine. But i don't wnat to use two PWR sounces to power them.cause it will be bulky,is the 9v battery OK to power them all?or maybe i should use two LM7805s,one for arduino and MP3 module, and another for the PAM8403 module. The pic attached is the working wiring of the project Please help me with this,Thanks. gada888

use a footswitch to activate MP3?

I am attempting to set up a foot pressure switch to activate an mp3 player for an art exhibition. I wired up the footswitch to to close the circuit when pressed between the speakers and the mp3. Unfortuneatley it only closes half the circuit so the other half remains open giving a lot of hissing sounds. The idea is that the mp3 remains on and playing but that when the pressure swicth is stepped on it closes the circuit so the music plays. I need to find a way to break the entire circuit when the mat is not stepped on. Any ideas how to achieve this? Thanks Cathal

Button Activated MP3 Player

I need to buy or build a device to play a single song in MP3 format on the push of a button, similar to one of those used in stuffed animals or greeting cards. I need to be able to hook it up to a small external speaker to make it a little louder. I a building a Nickelodeon Guts trophy for a friend of mine and would like to put this device in the base with a button on the top or front to play the theme song. Any ideas how I can go about buying or building something like this? I'm on a shoestring budget here, and not terribly handy with electronics, so I really need some advice.

MP3 input alternative on a stereo

Hi guys, I have a really burning question thats been eating me for a while. Can you put an alternative input on a stereo system to read mp3s? For example i have this stereo that plays mp3s but only has the disk input. This means in order to use it i have to burn the songs i want off my computer on to a disk then i can listen to my music. For those who probably WILL ask, I don't like playing my music off my computer because it's generally really loud, i want to use this in another room as well. My taste in music constantly changes, eventually i will want to remove a couple songs or add new ones. With that said, i want to know if you can remove/replace or add another input system to where a CD reader would be so that it reads a USB input or something. Then music can easily be manipulated to the users liking. As long it's not directly connected to a computer or requires the user to make new copies of the same music that take up space. Thanks!! Gonazar

Hard drive MP3 boombox?

I was wondering if anyone has and Instructable or has done this. I've searched Instructables and can't find anything like this at all, which really surprised me as I thought this would have been an obvious one to do. What I'd like to do is build a bookcase / boombox stereo from scratch using: 1. an old hard drive 2. some speakers 3. a small lcd to display info 4. some basic controls 5. usb port to update files on HD -or- make the HD removable 6. whatever other electronics parts are necessary. It doesn't need to have radio, CD audio or anything else. All I want is a 200GB or larger hard drive full of MP3's and a way to play them with decent fidelity and loud without using the computer. I've built lots of PC's and know computer hardware and software fairly well but have never used a soldering iron... but can follow complex instructions very well. Also I'm not sure if it can use a prebuilt interface by scavinging the electronics from a basic el-chepo MP3 player or if it would be better to use something like a VIA Micro-ATX motherboard with built in CPU and have something like a USB drive booting to a simple version of Linux directly to a media player interface? That seems like it would cost more in parts but be simpler than creating custom circuitry. But that is the way I would go if attempting this on my own. An all hardware & firmware solution somehow seems more elegant but that's beyond my current ability's. If I go with the Micro-ATX motherboard and Linux it could be done in a modular format that would allow the addition of other components latter such as CD player (with auto MP3 ripping), input and output to other components etc. So has anyone done this? If you haven't but have the know how do you want to collaborate via e-mail and walk me through it. I'd create an Instructable if so and give you full credit. Any and all suggestions, comments, rants, put downs, cheers, roars, hollars and yells appreciated!!

speaker connection for an MP3 player

My friend has asked me to make something so he can connect his stereo speakers into his MP3 player. They are speakers that have the black and red wires that you put into the back of the stereo, no plugs or anything and i already know what im going to make but im just not sure on the soldering points. I'm going to get a hobby box cut a hole in the front of it and put in a board of four speaker plugs then solder all of those to a cable that can plug into his MP3 player. Should i just solder all the black cables together and all he red cables together inside the box then connect them to the red and black cable to the MP3 player? The photos are the speaker plugs in going to use and a crappy MS paint picture of what im talking about

push button mp3 player?

Hey. I was hoping somebody could help me with an idea i have for a costume. I'm making a costume for Tony Stark from Iron Man 3, with the headset. I can make the headset, but I wanted to add something to it. I want to be able to put a small device that will play sounds (JARVIS quotes) when you push a button. What I'm envisioning is something like you see in some toys. It has multiple sounds, but one button. It plays through one sound effect when you push the button, the next one the next time you push it, and so on. I've seen ones that will do a sound for each button with multiple buttons, but that's not really what I want. One button, multiple sounds, and it cycles through them. Thanks.
