MP3 books to ZUNE

I just got a Zune, I like to listen to recorded books while I work, which is reasonably easy to do with the Zune interface software and most books on CD. THE PROBLEM is books recorded as MP3 files. Strangely enough here is an "MP3 Player" that cannot handle MP3 data directly... At least this is my experience so far. Placing a MP3 recorded book CD in the drive and while I CAN listen to it on the laptop using Zune's Software interface. Trying to transfer the files to the Zune unit creates error files that are unusable and so far I have not been able to remove from the Zune. Admittedly I'm a newbe to the Zune but have been using computers since the Atari 800 came out too many years ago for me to admit to...ANY help would be appreciated. Possibly there's something I just have not found as yet.

What is the best MP3 player? NOT iPod

I'm looking for an MP3 player, but i don't want to get an iPod. I was thinking the Creative Zen. I was looking around and I saw the 8 gig at Walmart for about $150. (I don't want to be badgered about Walmart or China or whatever) So does anyone have any idea on what should I get. It needs to work with Vista and Windows Media Player.

small MP3 recording whrist band device

Hello The job that I do is based alot on respect and trust. As all of you might know, trust is very easily destroyed just by words. Thats why I was thinking about putting together a recording device that would be like a wrist band that would only need to have 24h or more recording capability and possible bluetooth for downloading mp3 files. To start things I would need to find a small IC that does real time mp3 compression and does not consume alot of power. any ideas regarding this project ?

Old mp3-player, what to do with?

Hi everybody! I was going through some old boxes and found my old Creative Zen Vision:M. It's a bit beat up and the buttons are a bit dodgy but apart from that it's still working. It would be a waste to just throw it out but I don't really know what I could do with it, so now I'm asking for some suggestions. Just shout out if you have an idea, nothing is too silly or useless!

Explosive music player

There was much fear and freak out [when the box was opened]. But cooler heads prevailed and a phone call was made. “Hey Matt, did you order metal objects of a dubious nature?” Find out what they did, and how, here. (And what music would you store on it?  My first thoughts were Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang or Twisted Firestarter...)

Small Musical Components

I've got an idea in my head, but there's one part that may unravel the whole thing so I thought there would be no better place to ask than here! I'm wondering if there are any tiny devices that will play a given song (on repeat likely) when power is supplied to the device? If you've ever seen one of those birthday cards that plays music when they open then you have a pretty good idea of what I mean. I'm looking for something that would fit inside of an area about half an inch deep by an inch across. Something like you'd see inside of a music box (except scaled down) - does this sort of thing exist? Much thanks! - JM

MP3 hack problem PLEASE HELP!

I am replacing an old mp3 rechgargeable battery rated 3.7 volts with another one that is also "rated" 3.7 BUT when measured with the Vmeter the little bugger gives an output of 4.2, (too high) is there anyway we could add a led or some resistors to lower the voltage without draining the battery when the device is off? Thanks for any suggestions Cheers!

Mp3 Player Mod?

I'm not really sure if this is the right forum to talk about this. I did go to Tech, but I saw a topic about MP3 player Skin Mods here, so I thought if I could ask for some help. I have an Mp3 Player, it's cute, runs on AAA batteries and an SD Card. Here is the problem though. It lacks any sort of Display.  Like it's one of those screen less ones you find.  I do have a spare screen lying over from a cellphone, so I was wondering if it could be possible to modify the inner workings of my MP3 Player so that I can finally see the name of the song I'm listening to. xP

MP3 unit for car

Hi everyone, I was wondering if I could get some help with a project I'd like to make. My truck's stereo died, and instead of getting another stereo, I'd like to make a unit that just uses my MP3 player. Junkyard stereos are of dubious condition, and usually overpriced, and I'm too cheap to pay for a new stereo. I never really used the radio or CD player on the old unit; I just want basically a jack for a MP3 player/laptop, volume control, and power switch, powered by 12V and able to be hooked up to 4 speakers. I have some basic electronic knowledge, but not enough to make something like this. Could someone maybe, possibly, provide me with a diagram or ideas to get this started? Thanks a lot!

Need advice from arduino expert!

So, my goal is to take an old 60's transistor radio and house an MP3 player in there, hwoever, I would like the volume knob to still work (not thinking that's an issue), but I would like the tuning know to actually affect the MP3 player, perhaps turning to certain points would activate playfolders of types of music. Does this seem like a job of arduino or am I barking up the wrong tree? I'll check back to see if any one has any input, but also please feel free to email me at notveryhotmale *at* hotmail.com. The mp3 player would be accessable to add or change up playlists, it's just the know portion I am having trouble figuring out. HELP! Brian

Broken audio on mp3 player with vid screen - can anything be done with the unit?

Hi! A while ago, my mp3 player broke:  the audio doesn't work, yet the video part works.  I hate to throw the unit out so I was wondering if anyone has had a similar situation, and what they might have done to make the unit useful again. I could use it for storage (it's 2 gig) but it seems like a waste since it would have a screen that wasn't being put to good use.  Then again, without audio, any video would be as good as it cold be. Any ideas would be appreciated.  (I'm a novice at electronics - I'm hoping that an idea for its use will b e figured out - that doesn't require me removing the screen (since i am not that advanced in electronics) Thanks and have a great day! :)

MP3 Players and Magnets Newb Help Please?

I am planning on doing the project below for my Zune using a dry box and a marine speaker so I can take it canoeing with friends. The one thing I was wondering is if the speaker's magnet will wipe out my Zune's HD seeing as I would mount it in the box near the speaker. I know I can find shielded speakers, but I don't want to shell out a heck of a lot of cash for only one speaker seening as this is my first project like this. https://www.instructables.com/id/Simple-iPod-Amp/Help would be appreciated very much.

Advice required for audio playback from an IC

Hi All, I'm new here so go easy on me :) I need to throw together a circuit to play an MP3 when a switch is closed (Think musical greeting card rather than iPod).  The fundamental issue is a lack of knowledge re: mp3 playback on ICs. Is there a handy light-weight MP3 playback chip kicking around? Presumably I'll need to provide memory, an amp and various other bits. Does anyone know of an SoC that does something this already? I've seen the SOMO-14D (http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9534) but it seems to be very low quality and temperamental. Does anyone have any experience with this? If so, any recommendations? > Quality is important-ish - I know it's never going to sound like my Technics sound system but I'd like it good enough that a non-audiophile wouldn't complain. I'm guessing I'll need at least 128Kb/s for semi-decent audio. > Format doesn't have to be MP3 as long as the quality isn't _too_ low and there's an easy way to convert. > Small size (form factor) would be nice but isn't required. > If needs be, I can get PCBs etched _relatively_ inexpensively so that's not a major consideration. > Any suggestions for a good quality, small speaker would also be appreciated. Skills: I've got a degree in Electrical & Electronic engineering (but haven't touched a circuit since Uni) Budget: ~£300 tops (I'm hoping for considerably less) Time: Within a month or so. Many thanks in advance Basic

Does anyone know of an mp3 player that turns on / off when external power is applied / removed?

Would anyone happen to know of a portable mp3 player that has some sort of setting to allow it turn on and off automatically when external power is cut, such as when it is plugged into an accessory outlet in a car? I am trying to design a simple, inexpensive, and stealthy sound system for a friend's reproduction classic car. There is no place for a standard head unit. What I would like to do is hide a small tripath type amp and a small portable mp3 player behind the dash. Any ideas?

Curtis mp100 mp3 player mod ideas

Hi all, It my first time posting and I wanted to get some ideas, I found a old mp3 player of mine its a curtis mp1000 1gb mp3 player, its a self contained usb rive and uses a aaa battery for power. I am looking to make it a bit more useful to myself, I wanted to know if anyone would have a suggestion as to how I can make this into a good voice recorder, it has a mic already. I plan on using it for lectures ect. I was hoping that I could add a rechargeable battery that recharges off the usb connection, and somehow expand the memory while leaving the buttons and their controls intact. This may be impossible, but let me know, and thanks in advance for whatever help I receive.

MP3 + Speak alternative power supply???

I have posted this this in 'Kids' forum also, I hope that is ok? MP3 Bedtime Stories ..... Battery  Hi, new here so please bare with me.....long story cut short. My Grandson is five years old and I thought it would be great, and get him to sleep quicker at night, if I could come up with some method of playing MP3 stories. I know, CD player, etc. nope, at five years old they want to take EVERYTHING apart. So no mains leads, CDs, etc. What I came up with was buy a simple and cheap (£2.99) MP3 player off ebay, pair it with a small battery powered speaker (£5.99) and away we go.....doh!   Both items are amazing and just right for the job BUT both are battery powered (will go flat after he falls asleep and they are left on) and two, they both have on-off switches underneath which stops me mounting them on a surface. Sorry this is going on so long....... What I thought of doing is getting a loooooooong lasting battery source (would 9v last a lot longer) and bringing ing it down to 1.5v (x2 one feed for each device). Then it wouldn't matter if they were left on overnight a few times -  or am I deluded.  Or better still, can anybody please advise? Both the speaker and MP3 player have internal rechargeable batteries but they rely on a VERY busy mum recharging them daily so I am looking for an alternative. thanks

Xvid & MP3

These two seems to be the most popular video "backup" codecs on the internet (if you know what I mean). Since I started playing the pirate game on the internet, I always wanted to transcode all my video files using these two. Over the past two years, I have probably wasted several gigabytes of Google's bandwidth in a frustrating and tiring search to find an easy way to do this. If anyone have found one or a nice compact free program, please please come forward and help a brother out. If you know a why to do so with VLC, it would be da boom.

MP3 input alternative on a stereo

Hi guys, I have a really burning question thats been eating me for a while. Can you put an alternative input on a stereo system to read mp3s? For example i have this stereo that plays mp3s but only has the disk input. This means in order to use it i have to burn the songs i want off my computer on to a disk then i can listen to my music. For those who probably WILL ask, I don't like playing my music off my computer because it's generally really loud, i want to use this in another room as well. My taste in music constantly changes, eventually i will want to remove a couple songs or add new ones. With that said, i want to know if you can remove/replace or add another input system to where a CD reader would be so that it reads a USB input or something. Then music can easily be manipulated to the users liking. As long it's not directly connected to a computer or requires the user to make new copies of the same music that take up space. Thanks!! Change a switch into two buttons?

Hi, I'm trying to do the NES controller/mp3 player hack, and I bought a player small enough that the guts all fit into the available space in the controller case. However, it came with an on/off slide switch, and I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to modify that to the START and SELECT buttons instead. Thanks!

Hard drive MP3 boombox?

I was wondering if anyone has and Instructable or has done this. I've searched Instructables and can't find anything like this at all, which really surprised me as I thought this would have been an obvious one to do. What I'd like to do is build a bookcase / boombox stereo from scratch using: 1. an old hard drive 2. some speakers 3. a small lcd to display info 4. some basic controls 5. usb port to update files on HD -or- make the HD removable 6. whatever other electronics parts are necessary. It doesn't need to have radio, CD audio or anything else. All I want is a 200GB or larger hard drive full of MP3's and a way to play them with decent fidelity and loud without using the computer. I've built lots of PC's and know computer hardware and software fairly well but have never used a soldering iron... but can follow complex instructions very well. Also I'm not sure if it can use a prebuilt interface by scavinging the electronics from a basic el-chepo MP3 player or if it would be better to use something like a VIA Micro-ATX motherboard with built in CPU and have something like a USB drive booting to a simple version of Linux directly to a media player interface? That seems like it would cost more in parts but be simpler than creating custom circuitry. But that is the way I would go if attempting this on my own. An all hardware & firmware solution somehow seems more elegant but that's beyond my current ability's. If I go with the Micro-ATX motherboard and Linux it could be done in a modular format that would allow the addition of other components latter such as CD player (with auto MP3 ripping), input and output to other components etc. So has anyone done this? If you haven't but have the know how do you want to collaborate via e-mail and walk me through it. I'd create an Instructable if so and give you full credit. Any and all suggestions, comments, rants, put downs, cheers, roars, hollars and yells appreciated!!

Musical Chairs

Hello all, I'm taking a toy design class and I'm attempting to make a working prototype of a musical chairs type game.  There will be a central base that plays the music, but it should be programmed to randomly stop (allowing the children to sprint to the closest "base" on the ground).  The central base should then resume after either a specified time, when a button is pressed to resume play, or ideally when the kids shout "READY!". What would be the easiest way to go about constructing this? I do have some experience with programming and electronics, just not expert-level. Thanks for your help! - Danielle
