Some examples of confidential Mac files and folders are the career related ones. Of course, you will not waste all those sleepless night making your project just to give to other person, right? MAC or PC?

My brother make videos and we have an iMac, lets just say it is not substantial for his needs.  Now just to get the point across we came up with a fair MAC-Pro, it has an SSD for faster boot and render, then a 1 tb drive for storage, a 4 core cpu, two radion hd whatevers, two monitors and no other special add-ons, price = 6,992.00 USD.  Now we came up with a massive decked out PC based substantially off of Dream Machine 2011.  It has an SSD, an intel i7 3.4 ghz (two more than the mac and 200 dollars less) a 3 tb massive kick ass hard drive which cost less than the one tb, 8 gb of ram for 50 dollars, the mac was well over 300.  The biggest newest graphics card NVIDIA has the 590 costing about 750 dollars.  Two 27" monitors a decked out sound system, a RAT 5 Mouse, a generic keyboard, v8 cpu cooler, fair case from cooler master, 1000w power supply, Blue Ray dual write disk drive thing, and the dream machine mobo.  It came in at 2950 dollars and every price for parts was rounded up to the nearest 5 dollars. Mac = about 7000 PC   = about 3000 Mac = less storage, less speed, less performance PC   = KICK ASS Mac = is it worth it just to do videos PC  = what is a good PC movie aplication/program

AutoCAD for Mac Survey

AutoCAD was the first CAD package I really felt comfortable using and designing in. I've since realized that part of being an engineer is being familiar enough with dozens of different CAD packages so that you can recognize which one is the best tool for the specific challenge at hand. Since I use a Mac, I keep a copy of Windows running under Parallels primarily for CAD packages. This is actually a pretty common theme with people working at the various Squid Labs-related companies. I could probably walk just a couple of offices down and see SolidWorks on a MacBook Pro screen right now.So, I'm happy to read that AutoDesk is asking for input on a version of AutoCAD for the Mac:Mac Fanbois Get their Wish: AutoCADNearly two decades ago, Autodesk abandoned AutoCAD on the Mac. But now perhaps it is seeing too many sales lost to the likes of ArchiCAD to architecture clients, NX to mechanical engineering customers, and SketchUp to designers. Autodesk marketing calls it "trying to stay in tune with our customers," and are asking Mac and AutoCAD users to fill out a survey. ..."

Mac vs. PC

Please Read Before Commenting:Allow me to clarify:First, I hate calling it mac vs. pc, as a Mac is also a personal computer, but for convenience we'll stick with the idea that there's difference. My reason for making this thread is that I recently learned that the UF college of journalism (one of the best journalism schools in the US) requires all of it's third year students to own a macbook. Not just the photographers/multimedia students, but all of them. The photography aspect is the one that I care about. What I'm looking for in this thread is to be convinced that Macs are better than PCs for graphic work.I won't be rebutting or flaunting the advantages of PCs, and I hope none of you will, either. I just want to know what the real advantages are, particularly from people who are actually knowledgeable in the field. Please don't respond with vague statements about reliability and a lack of viruses. I would like quantitative reasons (relating to photography/graphic design), and not just your feelings. If you think that the main reason to use a Mac is the OS, tell me 1) Why? 2) Would it be just as good on another piece of hardware? Thanks! I look forward to reading your responses, and I hope my above message didn't come off as mean...I just don't want this to be a flame war.

Mac VS PC?

I'm posting this to share my experience and opinion of Mac's VS PC's. I welcome you to read and share your story. For many years I was a PC. I believed whole-heartedly that I needed Windows, and I needed Microsoft. Then I bought my last laptop. It wasn't cheap. I used it everyday for work and therefore it was important that it ran efficiently. Like many of you, I suffered from "blue screens" and on occasion a "crash". There were viruses and trojans and attacks from all places, you'd think I was engaged in war! Then the proverbial "last straw" occurred. I needed to upgrade into some new software, and I received a simple message that I needed to also upgrade the Windows Service Pack. Hmmm.... Seemed easy enough. (Been there. Done that.) So, off I went to download the SP (from a reputable source) and then "Success!"... I got a message that said "Successfully installed. Windows must restart to complete process". Hmmm... Ok... I pressed through the process to restart my machine and there it began.... The long and never ending cycle had started! My laptop shut down, started to boot and then upon seeing the (dare I say it?) Vista Start Up Screen, my laptop promptly repeated itself and began to reboot... o_0 ??? This went on for sometime... *anger growing*... NOTHING I did would stop this, or should I say NOTHING would START my laptop. It was forever entangled into a mysterious vortex of computer "Neverland". I was NOT impressed. I had to borrow another computer to do some research and found very little at the time to explain this conundrum. Then I tried Microsoft. I used their "so-called" online customer service department and was put in touch with someone who was younger than my oldest pair of shoes. He also couldn't speak English very well, so without being incredibly rude I requested another agent. Upon conversing with agent #2, I knew I was in trouble... (Was Agent #2 related to Agent #1???) ... o_0 ??? *shakes head* I will give credit to Agent #2. He was nice. He tried his hardest to suggest everything under the sun, but alas, we both concluded it was hopeless. The final bluescreen error number confirmed the toe tag on my machine. So I was left with having to reinstall the entire system and lose EVERYTHING on my laptop. *fuming mad now* Then it occurred to me that "Windon'ts" (as I affectionately call them now), opted not to provide me with necessary disks to reinstall their OS during my purchase. It seems that the cost of a CD has become so expensive for Microsoft that they are forced to leave it up to the consumer to fend for themselves. Clearly, they are suffering financially, No? When I rationalized this logic with Agent #2, he suggested that I purchase Windows 7 as it had just come out and was much better than Vista (No kidding.... *rolls eyes*). But why? Why prey-tell should I have to purchase anything? My laptop was only 14 months old (conveniently out of warranty) and may as well have been a pre-historic dinosaur as far as Agent #2 was concerned. So where did me and Agent #2 leave off? He suggested I "borrow" an installation disk from someone and reinstall windows vista and start over... *tics forming now...* He assured me that my "service call to Microsoft" would remain as "unsolved". (Oh btw, at this point we were regulars on the telephone). So my ONE LAST QUESTION to him was: "What assurance do I have, after reinstalling Vista and then the SP I need, that this problem won't just start again?" - His reply was, "Well, it shouldn't"... Straw officially broken. Now we come to my life with my new MacBook. Clearly much more expensive than a Windon'ts PC, but wait... Is it? Let's review. There are more "open-source apps" available to a Mac (meaning you get them for free), and in most cases I find they are the same if not better than the paid for MS version. The critical applications that I use everyday for work, installed fine and without issue. I also received "DISKS" from Apple. Apparently they can afford to give customers what they pay for.... Upon opening the box, I was running my new laptop within 5 minutes. Easy Peasy... The time alone that I save from all that aggravation is money in the bank. Do I miss anything? Yes, actually I do (or maybe I don't). What I miss out on are bluescreens, viruses, trojans, attacks, intrusions, crashes and all the other fun stuff I got to know and expect with a PC. So why tell all of you about this now? Well yesterday I noticed that the bottom of my MacBook had a slight bulge in the case. *Heart skipped a beat*. Then after some mild panic, with visions of my last ordeal swirling in my head, I went online in search of why, and found the answer within 5 minutes. Apparently this was something Apple became aware of and had a simple solution. Fill out a contact information form along with my serial number and I got a confirmation message. Not only would I receive an ENTIRELY NEW bottom to my MacBook, I would receive a full set of screws AND a screwdriver!!! All FREE OF CHARGE. NO SHIPPING FEES. COST ME NOTHING!!! *shocked* Now I was beaming. *ear to ear grin* I felt validated for my departure from PC. Then in some kind of absurd customer service universe, I received a knock at the door. My replacement parts had arrived!!! - Less than 24 hours later... *mouth gaping and eyes wide* So I thank you for reading this. I encourage you to share your opinions. If you don't know who I am. I am canucksgirl. I'm a Mac. Not a PC.

Winning Pwn2Own Hacker: Macs Are Safer Than PCs

Well, its nice to see the that the winner has common sense on his side.I've grabbed various bits of this from Gizmodo, whom got it from Tom's Hardware."I'd say that Macs are less secure for the reasons we've discussed here (lack of anti-exploitation technologies) but are more safe because there simply isn't much malware out there. For now, I'd still recommend Macs for typical users as the odds of something targeting them are so low that they might go years without seeing any malware, even though if an attacker cared to target them it would be easier for them."Be sure to read the Article before you start flaming. It mirrors what me and goodhart were saying before,A computers security is based entirely on the user.I used windows for over 2 years, with no anti-virus, no anti-spyware. Just a good firewall, and my common sense. My first rule of computing common sense is, only download pictures, music, and movies. If your going to get some illegal software get it from someone else whom has used the install files, and knows they work! Also, do not trust ll.13 when he links to your a serial website without informing you that most of them are Trojans.

WTF!!! Is Spyware attacking macs!?!?!

WTF!!! Is my mac under attack by some spyware!?!?! I really don't know, I was surfing the internet to find out how to hack into parental control (almost same thing as net nanny) that my is going to put on me soon to prevent using instructables so much. The window that I was surfing on just disappeared and the smaller window came up saying my computer is infected by spyware! Then I clicked "cancel", then another window popped up, its antivirus 2009, it had scanned my computer, then is said it has detected some dangerous spyware on my mac computer! Is this really true? Is mac computers beginning to get all the problems like PC always have??? Or is it an error?

Using a mac as a temporary proxy?

I'd quite like to be able watch BBc iPlayer (which only works if you're in the uk). Is it possible to use my mac as a proxy and if so how would I go about it? This would presumably be better than a free proxy site in terms of reliability and speed. Thanks in advance for any help, Happy christmas!

Trojan horse for macs in the wild

Uhoh.A trojan horse for MACS has been spotted: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/06/23/mac_trojan/It can take screenshots, log keystrokes, or (and here's the scariest bit) take pictures of you while on your computer through the built-in camera. Yikes!Be careful, all you apple users! You have a security concern to worry about ("a" trojan to worry about. As opposed to windows users...) ! Stay off Limewire and iChat. Lock your ports at night, and don't chat with strangers!

Ace ads and Firefox on Macs

As of right now, some of the Ace Hardware ads are misbehaving on Firefox browsers on Macs. They're showing up where they shouldn't and sometimes replacing the whole page. We're working with them to get this fixed ASAP but it is nighttime at Ace HQ so I don't expect a solution until the morning. In the meantime, things are fine in Safari, so if you need your Instructables fix NOW, I suggest using that. No problems are reported on Windows machines. If you are seeing misplaced Ace ads, please comment with your browser & OS versions!

Power Mac G4 Freezing

Again my Power Mac G4 is acting up again.  This time it freezes usually after about an hour and a half of use.  When monitoring activity monitor, the process called SustemUIServer turns red, and the computer freezes, also the CPU's shut down completely.  If I an watching a video the sound will repeat in a little clip over and over again like a broken record.  I have downgraded the computer from 2Gb of RAM to 1.5 as one of my sticks of RAM was bad, so obviously it is not a RAM problem. Yes I have ran various RAM testing programs such as MemTest86, and that had no issues.  Also with YouTube videos the video will freeze and the mouse wont move.  I will post specs of the mac soon so you know exactly what we are working with. And for anyone wondering, it's running Mac OS 10.5.8, Leopard

Call for Mac & Cheese Recipes!

Homeroom is a specialty Mac & Cheese restaurant opening soon in Oakland.  Even better, they're running a mac and cheese recipe challenge!  You don't have to be local to enter (or win), and the best recipes will be included in their upcoming cookbook.  I suggest posting your mac'n'cheese Instructable, then sending along the link as your entry - we'd like to see what you've made, too! Details from the Homeroom website: The winning dish will be selected from a group of 10 finalists, who will be invited to show off their mac and cheese at cook-off party held right here in Oakland. But don’t worry out-of-towners, if we choose your recipe one of us will cook it up for you. But there’s a catch. For your recipe to qualify for the grand prize or for a spot in the cookbook, you must follow a few simple rules: * You must use only California cheeses in your mac and cheese. * All recipes must be based on 1 pound of dried pasta. * The retail cost of all your ingredients must equal or be less than $20. This includes pasta, milk, butter, flour, cheeses and whichever veggies or meats you decide to include. * Email your entries topmac@homeroom510.com no later October 15, 2010. Be sure to include your name, contact info, and a detailed recipe, including brand-names. * Gluten-free and vegan recipes are welcome and encouraged!

Mac G3 password hacking?

I got a second-hand mac G3 for Christmas, from the sysadmin at my dad's office. Unfortunately, the sysadmin neglected to remove his accounts (and passwords), so as of yet it's impossible to get past the boot screen. Does anyone have any ideas about how I may crack the password or hack into the account... (changing the root password in single user mode doesn't work...) Oh, and by the way, it's running OS X of some sort, but since we can't log in, it's hard to know what cat it is. Help please!UPDATE:With the help of this site, we made an administrator account. We still don't know the master password, and there are a few untouchable files, but we can basically do whatever we want. The next challenge is to connect it to the internet...If you want to know how we got in, here's what we did:(1) we held down command (the propeller) and S as it booted --> this opened single-user mode, a command-line interface with root priveleges(2) instead of "rm"ing (removing), like the web site suggested, we "mv"ed (moved) /var/db/.AppleSetupDone to /var/db/.AppleSetupDone.old(3) we rebooted, and followed the instructions on the screenWhat did this do? It moved the file that told the computer that the computer was set up, so the computer ran the setup "wizard" like it was the first time the computer had ever been booted. After that, all we had to do was follow the instructions on the screen to set up an administrator (root) account. We also learned that the cat is panther, so we might be updating it to a newer version. Thanks for the help!

I want to erase data from a Mac but not the programs.

I have an old iMac (2004) with not too much personal stuff on it that I am worried about, but I am giving it to a friend, and I don't want to erase the music in iTunes or the applications like Photoshop and Word that can't be upgraded any longer.  When I Google how to erase a computer, the instructions for a Mac are sooooo easy - but all the directions talk about wiping out your "files". Are "files" programs that I can no longer load on to that Mac (because I no longer have the original disks, product serial numbers etc.)? If that is the case is there another way to make my information on that old computer (that I was using up until 3 months ago) safe? I just don't want to loose the software applications that it has, but I would like to loose their content, ie, a journal I kept on Word, art stuff on Photoshop, old emails I saved, love letters, naked photos (just kidding) - the usual stuff. I am not so worried about my friend but more about the next person down the road who might end up with this computer.
