Check out this awesome measuring cup! It's carefully marked to provide all sorts of useful measurements and volumetric equivalents, such as "enough red wine to take you over the driving limit" and "as many grains of flour as people on the planet" and "tyrannosaurus rex brain". So cool.(via boingboing)

While this may not be the best instructable I believe it would be helpful for many people doing science fairs (ie: ME). So here is the question said instructable would answer: How do you measure the force of an explosion, specifically of gases or liquids used in fuels? I have been racking my brain on this but everything i have come up with seems like it would be inaccurate. Thanks for any help

Slope Measuring

I'm interested in making a yardage book for one of the golf courses i play at. The only problem is that i don't know an accurate way to measure the change in distance through elevation. For instance if a shot to a green with no change in elevation requires a 7-iron, then a shot of the same distance that is downhill should require a club that will hit the ball a shorter distance.       My question is, is there a formula of some type that i can enter the rate of change in slope and the distance, and get the actual distance needed for the shot.

Metric Measurements

I love Instructables, but I find that I use it less and less lately. The main reason is the need to go through all the instructions and convert all the measurements from the old British system to the metric system that everyone else in the world uses. I do have a plugin for my browser, but it doesn't work on my tablet or phone, which I use more often when building stuff. It's 2017. Literally 95% of the worlds's population uses the metric system, and we have computers. Is it not possible for you guys to knock up a little programming routine that converts all the measurements if I'm in a metric country? I understand this is an American site aimed at an American audience, but it seems you're cutting off a huge number of potential site users here.

Ultrasonic distance measure

Hi eveyone, I'm an assistant cameraman in film and tv and sometimes I've hired in a  professional distance measure device to help with really tricky shots. Trouble is, to buy one costs an arm and a leg, I was just wondering if anyone here had come up with an affordable version. The device sits on top of the camera and sends out ultrasonic pulses to where ever it's pointing and displays the distance in feet and inches on a LED display, that constantly updates. That's all it needs to do. Should have a range of 2' to 15' and be +/- 1" accuracy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Measuring LED Voltage

Greetings... I have quite a few "salvaged" LED's, none of which have I the slightest clue as to their voltage. I have attempted to measure them using the diode setting on my voltmeter with dubious/mixed/questionable results. Although the measurements are momentary (the reading is barely of sufficient length to note), I can usually arrive at a value. Unfortunately, when I repeat the measurement on the same LED the reading is invariably different. For example, I just measured the value of a random LED (green) and came up with the following: 1.3. 1.4, 1.8, 1.6. I've rounded the values to the nearest decimal point. Are these values through voltage? Are the differences between the readings significant or should I use the minimum when calculating resistor values? I'll, no doubt, have a few more question later on. I appreciate your elucidation on this matter... Best to all, hassi

How to Identify or Measure Inductance?

I am gathering the parts for an ible, but I am short one part: a 12mH inductor.I can spot some inductors in electronic garbage - the wire coiled around a ferrite loop - but there are also solid state inductors. Plus, the inductors are not usually labelled with their values. How can I measure the inductance of an inductor with a volt-meter and an ammeter, but without access to a sine-wave generator? Is there some simple trick that would get me "close enough" to the true value? What would be really useful (but probably doesn't exist) is a chart or formula where you plug in the size of the core and the number of turns around it and out pops the inductance value. ?

measuring petrol/ethonol accurately

G'day All, If this has been done before, I apologise, but I have not found anything when I have searched. I am a team manager for a team of students who need to design, construct a three wheeled vehicle. The test is a 24 hour "trial" (more like a race ;-) ) We have been competing in a category for "Hybrid Vehicles" which an additional power source to asssist the rider.  In our case it is a 50cc engine using a friction drive arrangement so we can disengage it if required or if we desire.  The reason for this is that we only recieve 3 litres of petrol for the event............  This is my problem.  I have not been able to measure petrol in the tank accurately enough.  Over the last two years I have had one litre left or ran out after 21 hours.    I have been thinking of using a strain gauge or load cell to measure the weight of the tank.  I'm thinking it could be as simple as powering up the load cell with the appropriate voltage, and measuring voltage drop across it, maybe with an added resistor. Or it could be made more complex by using a circuit to drive a number of LED's giving an indication of the fuel in the tank. If anyone outhere has any ideas to do this simply and reliably, I would love to hear from you.  If it is more complex then so be it. Here is a link to the event to give you an idea of what it is about

Need to build a device to measure verticals

What i need to do is possibly use lasers, i need about 30 of them around a half inch apart inside an aluminum pole or something. then i need a light connected to each one which will be at the bottom of the pole. After the beams are broken i need a sensor to light up to tell me the beam has been broken. this way an athlete jumps and once his fingers break the beam i know how high he has jumped without having to deal with the vanes in the current device. just push a button to reset it all. no messing with the pole or vanes or anything.

D oes not necessarily require video, but some sort of info recording that can be read once it appears at its destination manhole. Thanks ...jim

Can I measure everything?

Can something exist if has no mass or cannot be converted into mass? The mass of a photon is zero, yet how can a photon have energy but not have mass? If this is false, would that it be true that a box with and LED in it would have more mass when the LED is lit? But, are there other types of being aside from energy and mass? A concept perhaps. How would a concept be measured? The word apple is comprised of certain wavelengths that are detected by the human ear. In the human body as a system, the energy that my body requires to produce those wavelengths at "regular" amplitude (assuming there can be a standard amplitude) could be converted into mass. Would this allow me to measure the mass of the word apple in the system of my body? Right now I'm sure many of you are thinking that the word apple could be represented in many other ways such as writing. This is why I used the word 'system' when I referred to myself saying the word apple. Since there is no standard for the writing and speech of the word apple. Is everything comprised of something? Could that something be converted into mass? Can I measure anything?

Gap measurement using a sensor

I want to measure a very tiny gap of about 20-30 microns(0.02-0.03 mm) using a sensor with the help of arduino and then display it using a 16x2 Digital LCD Display. Can someone help me out with the sensor that I will need for this purpose with exact name and its working. The gap that I want to measure is the gap between the the joints of a healing fractured bone.(the joint where the tissues develop to join the broken parts together.)Since this is a leg bone any person walking with such a fractured bone will put pressure on the bone and the gap present in the bone will reduce. So that is what I want to measure using a sensor and arduino. Since this gap will be too small (20-30 microns) I am unable to find a suitable sensor for the same.PS: Main issue I am facing is the measurement of gap using a sensor and arduino since I can find a suitable sensor for the same. Please find the attachments of the bone and the gap I want to measure. Also the thing I am doing is a close case of greenstick fracture. refer to the attachment of greenstick fracture.

Measuring a Bluetooth modules output? Answered

There is a serial Bluetooth module that I have used before on an Arduino project but now I'm trying to use in a project without the Arduino. Basically I need it to be an electronic trigger, I don't care really what the signal is just how long and the voltage and current. There are 4 pins on the module: Vcc, GND, Tx, and Rx. There are 2 open pads: Key and State. When I send a command from my phone the module sends a signal out the Tx pin, and it is this signal I would like to measure so I can pick a command with an appropriate signal and tailor the rest of the circuit accordingly. I tried a voltmeter between Tx and GND but saw no signal on any level measuring DC. Is there something I'm missing? Is the signal more complex or different, or is that test setup flawed? I tried other combinations, Rx-GND, Tx-Rx, RX-Tx, GND-Tx, GND-Rx but saw nothing.
