Any scale- model makers?

Hi, I am the art director on a very low-budget but so-far amazing movie. I want to make an inexpensive but professional looking model of an observatory. So far, I am thinking of using sculpey. Can anyone please help with some leads? I know I could put this together, but instructables, websites, or comments about materials or construction would help immensely. This website is full of resourceful people. Thanks!

Cool airplane model made from scratch

Another interesting story from Africa about handmade goods. I'd love to get one of these.Phillip Isohe is a metal fabricator in the jua kali, non-traditional industrial sector, in Kenya. In his spare time he builds models of airplanes and buses. This seems to be an extension of what many of us did while growing up in Africa - building wire, or tin can, cars. What's most interesting is the excruciating attention to detail that he puts into each one. In fact, they each have motors with working lights, steering, engine and interiors. full story

Metal Work

Does anyone out there have any knowledge on Cadam programming? I have a mini lathe and milling head and thinking about putting a Cad system on them. Would it be cheaper to just buy one already set up? Also looking for model plans to build and construct.

Fiberglass costs

I'm really interested in using fiberglass for the body of rc helicopter I'm designing but I've never used fiberglass before and I'm wary about the cost of this. Could anyone with experience in fiberglass help me figure out how much it may cost me?

This is a simple forum for all of the website users that do scale modeling. I know that not that many website users do, but at least there's somewhere now that the few people can use to talk about painting, techniques, or anything to do with models.

3D Modeling Program?

I have some ideas for a project I want to build, but I'd let to sketch it out in 3D form and create a model. Are there programs that can do this? I'd prefer free ones, but I guess I can shell out a few bucks if needed. I basically just need somewhere to put my thoughts into a 3D design so I can view what I'm actually building.

Making a 3D DNA model

Hi, I was thinking about trying to make one of those 3D DNA models you see in schools, showing all the atoms in the molecules joined together and climbing up in that beautiful double helix shape.Trouble is, I don't have the money to spend on one of those several-hundred-dollar kits, and I can't figure out exactly how a single nucleotide should look, let alone how to make several dozen nucleotides and joining them all together.I've searched google without much success, so any pointers/helpful guide images would be very much appreciated. Thanks

Halo Replica Question

Alright, I'm trying to make a replica of the Halo 3 Magnum (Yes, I know that technically it's not a Magnum but I don't feel like trying to remember the real name) and I already have the base cardboard cutout for it, but I realized that what I was going to do is a little more complicated than I thought. Originally I had seen someone who built an Assault rifle and Splazer out of just cardboard by having the basic shape in the middle and then layering it on both sides in certain areas in order to make it 3D. I was wondering though what other ways of making models are there that's fairly "easy" for a fanboy to do. "Easy" by means of accessibility; I know whatever I do is goin to take some amount of work to do, but I don't want someone telling me to use a vacuform machine. I just need to know if there's any ways of making replicas that doesn't require extravagant amounts of money or resources.

Software for slicing 3d model into layers for printing, cutting and assembly from card, layer by layer

I've been looking for software to slice up some 3d models I've made in 3ds max, and i know there are Pepakura model unfolders but the shapes are quite curved and a pepakura model wouldn't shape up right. So I'm looking for software that can cut a 3d model into variable layer height for printing on card and assembling like a 3d sculpture ( see Darth Vader - ). Any ideas?

[Help] Custom sounds for model

I've created a resin cast of a gun (raygun) from a video game (Black ops 2) and as part of making it as authentic as possible I would like to have it emit sounds I've pulled from the game at the press of a button, much like a toy gun. I don't know where to go with the idea from here. I would like something that's relatively easy to hear and not too quite and powered by batteries. If someone could point me in the right direction as far as parts I would need to achieve this I would appreciate it.

What are the restirctions/requirements to play with model rockets in your country?

I wanted to start again with an old hobby of mine and buy some rocket motors and one or two easy rocket models. Just for the fun of seeing things to fly high and come down slow you know? Depending on which country you can call your residency now you might luagh about what happened to me: I went to first model building shop I could find nearby in my Yellow pages. Of course that had no clue about rockets, not even remote controlled cars as they only build build models for multiplayer board games. Next shop was selected a bit better with a focus on all things remote controlled. Here I was told that only a few shops actually sell any rocket related stuff due to the tough legal requirements of storage, handling and selling - WTF?? (excuse the language!) But at least I got an address for a shop that would be abe to help me figuring it all out. Last but not least I finally entered a shop filled with all sorts of model rockets, from simple to realist replicas of Saturn 5 engines. "Can I see your permit please?" "Do you have a club memebrship card stating you can buy engines?" "Can you provide the required details on your storage facilities and fire control system?" That were just a few of the questions thrown at me when I went to the checkout with 3 little rockets asking on where to find the engines and ingintion kits..... Turns out here in AU it is far easier to obtain a firearm and license than to get what you need to shoot a plastic rocket 100 or 200m high in the air.... Without being a member of a recognised model rocket club you won't have access to a legal launch area. Without your club permit you can't obtain a license required to buy a model rocket engine - yes we are taking about these paper tubes every kid uses.... Without the license, club membership and the required club permits you will never (legally) buy a rocket motor... To make things worse the 4 clubs I contacted only supply motors they buy to their members, at about 20% above market price of course and you won't get a card to buy your own until you are a member for at least three years... I already know in Germany and the US things are quite different but I would still like to know how exactly it works in your contry or if your face similar problems outside US and EU territory.

New to site not sure this were to post this. Led's for ac powered model railroading, to replace incandescent bulbs.  Voltage to track varies from 5 to 17 volts AC.  Leds will light up, but what is it doing to them. They do not pop like a flash bulb at top voltage. I've rectified some to dc voltage for lights in cars, the variable voltage seems to power them. Ideally a circuit that put out a constant 3.2 DC volts, with a variable 5 to 17 volt AC input.  Or maybe would a constant 3.2 volt AC out would function? I found that with HO DCC control, a white led with a 1k resistor will function, have not ran them for more than few hours though. Prewired rectified leds go for around $3.00  each, 5 passenger cars, 2 bulbs each, gets pricey with 4 sets of cars. Surly someone has gone through this.

I can make 3D model from photo of a part, technical drawing or your drawing. (starting from 4$))

Hello everyone! What I want to offer you is my skills in 3D modeling. I can make a 3D model of your idea just from a photo of simple drawing, technical drawing. It can be anything that will give me the thought of the shape. If you need a custom part for your quadcopter just draw it and put some measurments on any holes, or just draw it, and i will tell you what measurments I need. Any model can be done for 4$ and if it is more complex, or time consuming to build the cost may be quite higher.   Simple models can be done even in the same day I get drawing!  I can also send you some renders of finished model. Just contact me here at instructables, send me a link to drawing/photo and I will tell you the cost. Remember! You pay only for ready model. I will not charge you until the model is finished. I accept only Paypal. Below you can see some of my work.

Human finger model movements DC activated.

Hello good folk I have been working on some artificial finger extensions and retraction via a DC motor. An H-bridge is used which is connected to a dial switch. The tendons are braided fishing line. It has proven worthy during the prototype stage. The advantage of my design is that a single DC motor of servo can control movement and grasping of the entire finger. This design particularly excels when compared to the most advanced models at the moment.... The Shadow hand would be an example. Extremley capable yet the muscle collection to the rear of the hand makes their model obsoliete even before it was created. Much work needs to be done on their model to make it effective. I apologise for the pics (camera phone) as the detail leaves much to be desired. This is just a functional model of the unit, so it's not ment to look pretty. It only purpose is to serve as the concept base as I was trying to get the tendons/joint configuration worked out... You should notice the holes in each section, the tendon passes within the finger segments within a sheath embedded inside the epoxy segment. The tendon is only exposed at the joints which also need to be finished with a exterior protectant layer. I am posting these as an example of the funtioning finger. However I would like to post videos at a later date.

Eric Wilhelm "What will users pay for" on O'Reilly Webcast Thursday, April 15, 2010

On Thursday, April 15, 2010 at 10 AM PT, I'll be doing a live webcast on O'Reilly's Meet Experts Online titled "What will users pay for?"  This is a lead-up to my Web 2.0 Expo panel discussion, What Our Users Will Pay For.  I'll be talking about Instructables' business model, and some of the things I've learned along the way about running a small company.  You can join for free, and send questions into the interviewer via chat.  I'll post a video for anyone who can't make the live event. Here's the description of the event: If advertising alone won't pay the bills and paywalls are tough to get right, how can web-based businesses make money? This is a question CEO Eric Wilhelm has already confronted. We'll dig into the Instructables model and consider potential solutions in this video Q&A.; Hopefully see you there!

Scrapped M4

This is an M4 that I am working on. Sorry guys, I scrapped my old M870 RBG Shotgun for parts, but If I can, I will try to make this one shoot rubberbands, however, the main feature will be the realism (if pieces of plastic connected together in the shape of an M4 can be considered realistic). Some of the features will include an adjustable stock (the first of its kind), a removable magazine (shown in the first video, along with the stock), Adjustable sights* (maybe), open ejection port (where the shells come out on a real gun), a charging handle, that when pulled, will pull the bolt back, opening up the ejection port*, and if possible, I will make it so that a 30-06 shell will pop out of the open ejection port. I will hopefully be posting more movies showing the other features as I add them to the gun. Hope you enjoy! *Not made yet. Unterzeichnet,Mykhailo

Obtaining helical slices from a 3D model

Hey guys, I've begun to work on a volumetric display for a school project like the one in the link at the bottom of this post but I can't figure out a good way to obtain helical slices of the 3D model which I intend to project. I could do it manually by subtracting the "negative" of the helical screen from my model in Solidworks and then take a screen shot, but this would be pretty time intensive since I would need 360 shots(360 2D images from below the model with the screen negative rotated one degree each time). Is there any program out there or add-on for solidworks which could automate this process? Or even a functionality in solidworks that I haven't thought of? Would appreciate any advice you have on this subject. Link To Helical Volumetric Display Video:

Call for pre-made parts!

We're rolling out some new parts for the Kits in 123D Design.  That means you'll soon have some real-world models at your disposal in the Design app, and I wanted to see if there were some specific requests out there for parts that you might use on the regular. I've put in for some tools and hardware - like metric and SAE wrenches and hex bolts - but is there anything that you'd like to see as a part or a template?   M4 screws for an Arduino enclosure? 4" 2-way gate hinges? Eye-Hooks? Light bulbs? Threaded rod? Phone cases?

eXistenZ Game Pod build.

Ok, one of my idea for a current project is to recreate my own model/version of the game pod out of the David Cronenberg film eXistenZ.If your unfamilar, see the pics and video - Essentially the 'game pod' is a biological virtual reality games console. And i must say i am a fan of the film. Now, i need some help, both with ideas, and with build methods.Ideas- I require an idea as the the use of the device - eg, an external hdd enclosure, a wallet, what ever.- I Have a base that im going to use, in the form of a beach stone. So the size is 125mm x 125mmMethods- Although i have a base 'stone' i need to sculpt a little extra, to make the nodule like bits. and genrally curve the shape a bit, what can i use? would bondo do? and whats the UK equilivent?- I want to have a silicon like finish, like the film, i was planning liquid latex, is that a good idea? what else is there thats better?I would appreciate any help anyone can give.ThanksGmjhowe
