Gear Study

The last Friday of the month is a build day around Instructables HQ. I've been meaning to create some art involving gears of different pitches, so I took part of my build day to do a study in gears. These are two laser-cut acrylic gears I made on our Epilog 36EXT that are half 10 in pitch diameter and half 20 in pitch diameter. I advanced the 20 pitch side about one-half of a pitch. The gears were designed in OMAX Layout, which just happens to have a nice gear profile generator. I'm hopeful about putting together a set that gradually change pitch diameter. There's a bit of slop between the gears, and I'm taking advantage of it (at least in this set) to keep the teeth from colliding at the transition. They only rotate freely in one direction; in the other they bind.

70-note "Bottle Organ"

Here's one for you... I'm looking to create a 70 note bottle organ, inspired by this video: Except I'm wanting to build mine in a more "automatic" state - played via MIDI notes, an arduino and lots and lots of solenoids making spoons hit the bottles.. That side of it I've got covered thanks to other excellent instructables which have taught me a lot about micro electronics. What I am currently trying to work out is if there is a way to change the pitch of bottles in any way except simply adding water. Would another liquid achieve the same results with less "spill risk"? Does it even need to be a liquid? I'm guessing it needs to be a liquid as I believe the physics of the noise made when a bottle is struck is based on the water absorbing vibrations, making them slower and lowering the pitch. If anyone has experience tuning multiple bottles to be struck as an instrument then please do reply! Alternatively if anyone has any novel suggestions for things which would be easier to persuade 70 notes out of then please also reply! End goal - be able to play flight of the bumblebee at full speed with chords and out-nerd the guys in the video. Ideally on bottles. Many thanks! Leo

Pitch resistor in a circuit question?

How can I change the pitch of a buzzer using a PING))) sensor?

I am trying to make it so that when I move my hand closer to the PING sensor, the pitch of the buzzer becomes higher.  I don't care about the distances or pitches because I can edit, I just can't write codes. Thank You

Can two MIDI devices be on the same output?

I'm making a keytar and was planning on finding a keyboard with  the number of keys that I want and a MIDI output, but I'm thinking that if I do find a keyboard, it won't have the pitch-bend functionality. Could I have an Arduino read a membrane potentiometer and send that out the same MIDI port that the keyboard is sending the note data out of and have the pitch bend affect the note?

Arduino Clinometer for vehicle

I'm building a Clinometer for a vehicle, that will show roll & pitch, and log this data as well as yaw (skid). I'm using a 3 axis accelerometer with an Arduino, and am looking for ideas on improvements. I have the g forces for the 3 axis being displayed in the serial monitor, and am ready to display values on a LCD, but really thinking this should be graphics of a vehicle showing pitch and roll, like the old Jeep Clinometer I had as a teen.

TV giving off high pitch hum.

Well I recently inherited a old TV it is an SDTV and it is about seven years old. So I decided to test it with my computers osciloscope and using the microphone on it i turned the osciloscope on and there was one constant signal that went up and down about 3 or four KHZ every second or two. But when I muted the TV their was the normal background noise at about 1-7 KHZ but one signal that I found is about 16-17 KHZ and 5.94 DB, and when I turn the TV off it stops and that 16-17 signal disapers. So how do I get rid of this annoying high pitch noise?

Violin tuning issue: Don't know how to tune D string Answered

I know how to tune everything but the D string. I keep going up and down with the fine tuning, but to no avail. Here's what I've got: -Violin is made in China, but it's somehow better and lasted longer than most violins here in the PH (Philippines) -I have a pitch pipe to assist in tuning, but when I hit D, it's somehow muffled (in a way) and I can't hear it clearly, so I can't differentiate between what I'm playing on D at the moment, and the pitch pipe output.

How do i build or where can I find an interactive capacitive proximity sensor?

I am building an electronic version of an old Brazillian instrument called a Berimbau. Part of it is played by moving the cabaca or gourd closer to or further from your body. This movement bends the pitch or mutes the output. I'm attempting to replicate this effect with a proximity sensor that will do the same job as I move the instrument back and forth from my body. My problem is all the sensors i find are just on off switches. I need something that will increase gradually with the distance. So if anyone out there has a solution then do please help! On a note tho there is a device available for guitar called a wah probe. It is exactly what im attempting to build but costs in excess of £300 so when the first thing i will be doing is dismantling it and hacking up the copper plate i dont see the point in wasting the money! Especially when it will probably take several attempts to get right...

Metric bolt pitch? Answered

Hi,Nice tutorial. One question. In this lesson you say........"This is opposite imperial in that as the pitch gets higher, the thread coarseness increases. The smaller the number, the greater the pitch. For instance, an M6 x 1 would be a much finer pitch than an M6 x 1.5."Is it correct to say...." The smaller the number, the greater the pitch"?

A weird ringing sound from my computer?

Ever since I built my gaming computer, my HP monitor which has speakers in it makes a ringing sound. What is weird about it is that when my CPU is occupied for a second or two (Like opening Google Chrome), it stops and when it is done processing that it starts back up. It also stops when I lay my mouse over certain things or put a drop down list. It's a very high pitch sound that everyone I ask says they don't hear anything. However, I can hear it like one of those old chunky TVs that make a high pitch sound on start up. It's very distinct to me and it's annoying. I know it is my speakers making the sound because whenever I unplug them they stop making the sound. Any possibility? Motherboard malfunction? My speakers on plugged into the green port on the back of my computer. Thanks!

Threading and pitch for Microphone mount nut or stem? Answered

Does anyone out there know the threading and pitch for a standard condenser mic stem? I lost my mounting nut and even the manufacturer won't provide the info I need. It's a Presonus M7. It should have a standard threaded stem as most universal mounts fit it. I know it's metric, Possibly an M20 or M22 with a #1 pitch. Anyone know for sure?

Why does the pitch of tapping with a teaspoon rise in a mug of hot milk?

Need: Ceramic mug (shape doesn't matter), hot semi-skimmed or full-fat milk, metal teaspoon. When I give the milk a good stir, then begin to tap the bottom of the mug (inside) with the spoon, the pitch of tapping rises gradually. When I stir the milk thoroughly & then start tapping again, the pitch resumes its ascent from the original lowest note. If I only give a partial stir, the pitch resumes partway up from the lowest note. What's going on?

Using Theremin to Modulate Pitch of an Input for Use in Sonic Screwdriver?

I'm not real familiar to the in depth functioning of the Theremin, but I think I have the general gist of how it works. Specifically, I was wondering If it was possible to use a Theremin to change the pitch of a sonic screwdriver. One of my qualms with sonic screwdriver replicas is that they lack the changing pitch of the screwdriver in the show (Doctor Who, to the uninitiated). After reading about Theremins, I wondered if one could be built into the case of a sonic screwdriver (DIY with metal case) allowing the pitch of the sound to be altered in relation to its proximity to the users hand(s) and the environment. Has anyone ever heard of something like this being done?

Midnight Football (soccer)

Me and my friends have just finished GCSEs and have decided to celebrate with some midnight football. We're going to be playing in a Multi Use Games Area, essentially a big cage with a goal at each end. We don't want to floodlight it, and so we're thinking glow sticks on us and around the goals. We need a way to make the football glow or been seen however and this is where you come in. Any ideas?

What makes a voice male or female, besides pitch?

I am making an animated film, and I plan to voice the whole thing. thanks to my wizardly powers of audio editing (aided by Soundtrack Pro, no less) I can make it sound like anything I want! but, what exactly makes a female voice sound female? I know pitch is a part of it, but just raising the pitch on a deep-voiced male (read: Me) does not girly voice make. Audio and/or music terms? suggestions? thoughts?  feel free to post any of the above.  Ciao!

Tying a subwoofer into standard desktop speakers and electronically lowering the pitch (so that it produces deep sounds)

For fun I decided to take apart my desktop computer speakers and convert them to a portable iPod speaker. I have already found a way to convert it to DC power so that I can integrate it into a portable "boom box". I also have a subwoofer that I would also like to build into the boom box but the sound when connected is rather high in pitch. Is there any I can do electronically to lower the pitch so that the bass is more pronounced and deep? Thanks!

baseball pitching machine auto feeder how to?

I made a very simple pitching machine...actually a soft toss machine. It is a pvc pipe assembly that when set up, dad simply "loads" a ball in the downward angled pipe and it "drops" in front of the batter. My question is: the downward angled pipe can be long enough to hold a dozen balls - what can I use to create a mechanism that allows one ball to drop every 5 seconds automatically?

Transistor vocoder?

Hello, last night i was experimenting with my breadboard, and i came up with an idea, transistors have a supply voltage, which the small voltage controls pitch and volume. but i thought what if i had voice coming in to the supply voltage part(after being super amplified) and the keyboard comes in the control voltage side, would the keyboard not control pitch of voice, while voice modulates? thanks for your help.

Help with making a triangle wave sequencer with pitch relative to tempo, please? Answered

I'd like to make a low frequency triangle wave oscillator/sequencer, but the oscillator and sequencer have to somehow be synchronized with each other, so that if the tempo gets doubled, for example, the pitch also goes up one octave. How can I do this? I've already made a circuit based on this oscillator and the 4017 decade counter as a sequencer. (Ignore all capacitor, resistor and pot values; I haven't defined them yet)

Remotely controller beeping device

I'm a real Noob to this electronics thing (but I find it fascinating..). Anyway, I want to try to build a device that beeps. The duration  of the beep is fixed, but the frequency and pitch should be variable, depending on user input. The whole device should be as small as possible and water proof. I would prefer to be able to control the beep frequency and pitch remotely - perhaps from a mobile phone or from something like a remote controller. The beeping unit should be kept simple as possible. Any ideas on how I can achieve this? Thanks, Yossi
