Need help from archery/ siege weapon people?

So im planning to make a ballista for a school project. I haven't learned all that graphing stuff yet, so how do i determine the range of a projectile launched according to it's angle launched, mass of prjectile, and draw weight? i suppose it would go somewhat like (Mass of projectile) x (n constant) x absolute value of ({angle launched - 45 degrees} x k constant ) x draw weight x g constant sorry, im not good at math. would it work if I just flung projectiles and recorded distances and graphed that? or would I have to calculate each thing seperately? please help

The best of Office weapons

We have all at one time built a weapon out of a pen. There are plenty of Instructables under office supplies that cover booby traps, launchers, and even siege weapons. But some are repeated. Which are the best? Which need more? You decide.

Ancient History: Kite bombs

From the article:   We investigate the kite bömb - a never before built medieval siege weapön that dropped bómbs from a kite over cities. We build one and test it with startling new insights and success. We investigate ancient bouncing bõmbs that actually skip across water - ... Source of article.    I saw this on the Ancient Discoveries. Over the weekend I believe, on TV.   The key to stability was a long tail...... How Can I Improve My Catapult? Answered

So I built a mangonel (torsion catapult) for science olympiad, and it must launch a foam ball up to 15 meters. But, its struggling to reach 10 meters. I was wondering how I can make it launch further, whether changing the tension of the torsion bundle, different rope, or even structural changes. I will gladly accept any and all suggestions.

Featured I'ble not showing on front page or withthe snazzy banner?

Hullo all... I received the email telling me that I am awesome... and indeed that my I'ble on Trebuchets is also of the same calibre... BUT... It doesnt appear to be showing up on the home page... nor does it have the little white diagonal banner that says 'Featured'... that my other featured I'bles have... I assumed that it was just due to updates and filters and such... but the time stamp on the email shows that I was featured at: 17 April 2010 00:17:43GMT   I show up in this link: https://www.instructables.com/play/?show=FEATURED Decided to take this to the forum as I was unsure who to email... or If its part of the new site re-vamp? Let me know Jay did no one ever learn that its not wise to mess with the person holding the siege weapon??? ;)

Revolutionary Knex Gun Competition 3

"Necessity is the mother of all invention. Competition is the mother of all necessity." -Oblivitus The Challenge: Build a weapon that can survive being dropped as many feet as possible without breaking (30 or 50 feet for example). You will need video proof for this (the best way to do it is probably to throw it up in the air, DON'T HIT ANYTHING). Remember that how well it fires is also very important in this competition. Rules: 1. You may enter as many knex weapons as you like. 2. You may not enter siege weapons. Criteria (in order of importance) -Performance (how well it fires) -Innovation (how many feet it can be dropped from without breaking) -Appearance A weapon that was posted before the beginning of the contest will decrease its chances of winning. Grass is fine for dropping the gun on. However, dropping the gun on a harder surface will score bonus points. If the gun survives falling on more than one section (for example; on drop one it falls on its barrel, and on drop two it falls on its stock) the gun will score bonus points. Deadline: August 1st. Judging: I'll pick the winner. Rewards: The winner will receive my 5 star rating on their slideshow or instructable. The real prize, however, is the satisfaction of winning. The winning weapon will be announced in a forum on or shortly after August 1st. Entering The Contest: Post a link or photos of your weapon on this forum to enter. I will be posting a new contest near the beginning of each month until further notice.

My 2cts on the new Featured Instructable system

Hello everyone, it was suggested that I give my thoughts on the current (new) system when an Instructable is Featured. Recently one of my Instructables was Featured (have a look at my Trebuchet I'ble). I received the standard 'We think your awesome' email... and then... nothing I waited for a snazzy little banner proclaiming to the world that I was featured... I also waited to see my Ible on the front page... After 24 hours I got worried and posted a bug report, where the new feature was explained to me Where I have the problem is this new three teired system hasn't REALLY been explained in an email or a site update memo.. Perhaps It would be useful to have an opt-in site update email which explains the current features/updates of the website? Another problem is the email I received says this: Hi! Your Instructable "Scout Project: How to build a Trebuchet" was just featured by one of our editors! Being featured means we think you are awesome. Keep up the great work! Look for your featured Instructable, within the next 30 minutes, here: https://www.instructables.com/play/?show= FEATURED https://www.instructables.com/play/siege-engines/?show=FEATURED Eric The old style email says: Hi! Your Instructable "How to make: Norbert the Cuddly Squid" was just featured by one of our editors! Look for it on the Instructables homepage within the next 30 minutes. Being featured means we think you are awesome. Keep up the great work! https://www.instructables.com/ -Eric There isn't very much difference, and when you are unaware of the change, it is a little confusing... maybe the standardised email needs a little tweaking for the new Featured Instructable system? Thanks alot Jay

What Should I Make Next?

Alright I have ideas but I have no clue which I want to do. So I'm simply going to ask you guys. Which of these should I make? By the way check out my TDS Instructable I updated it with a simple slide mechanism. Compact Assault Rifle Like an AK-74u or an XM8C. Basically I want to try to make a small gun that has some good strength. (an exact gun you want me to do would be helpful) Power Weapon/ Sniper I dunno this is something I really wanted to make for a long time after getting some more pieces. I've had I don't know at least 4 or 5 failed attempts before I don't like what I'm making. I have yet to make a weapon simply dedicated to power. Another Side Arm My TDS is great and all but it could have been a lot better. Basically I'll try something new and see what I get. Crossbow I suck at these...and that's why I want to try it out. It's another thing that I think a knexpert should have along side a side arm and sniper. What I would plan out then is a repeater so it has a magazine. Siege Weapon Something else I was curious about. A catapult or maybe a scorpion although it would probably just end up being an even smaller version of I_a_C's cannon. I'm not to enthusiastic about this one. Other Gun Replicas I guess I could try to make other replicas of bigger weapons but unlike the compact assault rifles they'll most likely be more for looks than function. Any Combination of the Above? I don't know maybe a cross bow pistol the handle loads sounds kind of cool although it would sure be a challenge. Or if you have other ideas tell me. Those were what I could think up at the moment and would be willing to do.

No one else was hurt. The shooting began near a fountain in front of the UT Tower — the site of one of the nation's deadliest shooting rampages more than four decades ago, when a gunman ascended the clock tower and fired down on dozens of people. Within hours of Tuesday's gunfire, the school issued an all-clear notice, but the university remained closed, and the area around the library was still considered a crime scene. "Our campus is safe," school President Bill Powers said. Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo expected the school to be "completely open and back to normal" by Wednesday morning. Authorities identified the gunman as 19-year-old Colton Tooley, a sophomore math major. His parents did not immediately respond to a message left by The Associated Press. The 50,000-student university had been on lockdown while officers with bomb-sniffing dogs carried out a building-by-building manhunt. After the gunfire, authorities searched for a possible second shooter, but they eventually concluded the gunman acted alone. Confusion about the number of suspects arose because shots were fired in multiple locations, and officers received varying descriptions from witnesses, campus police Chief Robert Dahlstrom said. Before reaching the library, the gunman apparently walked for several blocks wearing a mask and dark clothing and carrying an automatic weapon, witnesses said. Construction worker Ruben Cordoba said he was installing a fence on the roof of a three-story building near the library when he looked down and made eye contact with the suspect. "I saw in his eyes he didn't care," Cordoba said. The gunman continued down the street, firing three shots toward a campus church, then changed direction and fired three more times into the air, Cordoba said. A garbage truck driver leaped out of his vehicle and ran away, as did a woman carrying two babies, the construction worker said. "I'm not scared, but I was scared for the people around me," Cordoba said. Randall Wilhite, an adjunct law professor, said he was driving to class when he saw "students start scrambling behind wastebaskets, trees and monuments," and then a young man carrying an assault rifle sprinting along the street. "He was running right in front of me ... and he shot what I thought were three more shots ... not at me. In my direction, but not at me," Wilhite said. The professor said the gunman had the opportunity to shoot several people, but he did not. Police said it was unclear whether the gunman was targeting anyone with the AK-47. Oscar Trevino, whose daughter works on campus, said she told him she was walking to work near the library when she heard two shots behind her. She started to run and fell down. She said she later heard another shot. "She's freaking out. I'm trying to calm her down. I've just been telling her I love her and relax, everything's fine," Trevino said. Acevedo said officers were able to track the gunman's movements with the help of students who "kept pointing in the right direction." The police chief said he believes the gunman ran into the library as officers closed in on him, then shot himself in the head on the sixth floor. Police did not fire any shots, Acevedo said. Powers credited the school's crisis-management plan and social networking for quickly warning students, faculty and staff. The university's text messaging system reaches more than 43,000 people, he said. Laura Leskoven, a graduate student from Waco, said she was in a media management class when she received a text message from the university saying there was an armed person near the library. For the next 3 1/2 hours, Leskoven and about 30 of her classmates sat in a locked conference room trying to keep tab on events through Twitter, blogs and text messages. "We were kind of shocked," Leskoven said. "Our professor said, 'Well, we need to get upstairs' because we were on the first floor of the building." Student Joshua Barajas said he usually is in the library in the mornings but was delayed Tuesday when he made a rare stop for coffee. "These little mundane decisions could save your life. If I hadn't stopped for coffee — and I never stop for coffee because it's $4 — I could have been in that building," Barajas said. "It's creepy. I don't even want to think about it." On Aug. 1, 1966, Charles Whitman went to the 28th floor observation deck at the UT clock tower in the middle of campus and began shooting at people below. He killed 16 people and wounded nearly three dozen before police killed him about 90 minutes after the siege began. ___ Associated Press writers April Castro and Jim Vertuno in Austin, Ramit Plushnick-Masti in Houston, and Diana Heidgerd in Dallas contributed to this report.
