Solar Panel 12V regulator

Currently i am working on a 12V solar panel. the solar panel will be charging up the battery of 12V7AH. The problem is that by using the solar panel, the voltage often to be fluactuating down until 10V. How can i make the voltage remain constant at 12V?

solar question

Do solar panels have to be in direct sunlight? I'm looking to make a "Sun Jar" and was wondering if it would work on my balcony. The only thing is our balcony doesn't get direct sunlight to it as it's inset into the building and covered by the above apartment's balcony.

Any new solar projects lately?

Is anybody planning any cool solar experiments/projects around the house this year? I want to make a solar water heater; picked up two nice large double-paned sliding glass doors at spring clean-up this year. That's all I have for now; I still need pipes, valves, and extras. I'm definately taking pictures for an Instructable.

Can anyone help with a solar circuit?

Hello! I'm trying to build a solar powered night light.  What I would like is to have it charge during the day and automatically come on when it senses darkness.  Here is what I've gathered so far, any suggestions are appreciated: 3AA rechargeable batteries (3.4V) 1 4.5 volt solar cell 1 phototransistor 1 transistor 4 White LEDs (20ma) This is my first posting and I'm a (near) complete novice to electronics!  Can anyone tell me if the photo-transistor or transistor needs a resistor and if so which one??? What resistor do I need for my LEDs??? How do I wire it so that my solar cell can recharge my batteries but not ruin my LED??? Thanks again and please feel free to chime in with your two cents =)

How do I prevent my great solar idea from being patented?

I have solved the solar energy crises by connecting linkages on the ground in a matrix pattern with a mirror on each small  plastic linkage, that all move in the same fashion. 30x30 m grids can focus all their energy on a single thermal element. My problem is that I don't want to publish this only to have  some company patent the idea and deprive humanity of energy. What now?

Solar Energy

Hi, i would like to ask for opinion, i am building a solar system where my system start from using a fresnel lense to collect the sun and use it to heat up a boiler, the boiler transfer steam into my tesla turbine and the turbine will turn my generator to produce electricity. Do anyone have any idea of building an own boiler instead of using a pressure cooker that i had seen this idea in somewhere, And, is there any places can provide cheaper fresnel lense as the sun focusing tool?? i will need a cheaper price lense cause of shortage in my budget of my final year project...

Non-Arduino Solar Charger

Do you think there is a great alternative to the current solar charger? Today, there are many DIY Solar Chargers that are alternatives to the current commercial products. Do you think there is a better design for a solar charger that is not run by an arduino?

Solar cells and the environment

Question about solar cells. Since solar panels are encased in glass or polycarbonate, does exposure to the elements degrade solar cells? And if so, in what fashion? Corrosion of the traces? water infiltration? etc. etc? Or is it a matter of the fragility of the cells?

Solar power for a laptop

Hello everyone I have an idea to build a solar power suppl for a laptop using a 12"x12" solar cell. M question is this, if I solder the leads from a power inverter to the solar cell, it should be able to power or charge a laptop correct? Is there something else I would have to do?

FIXED: New solar panel icon doesn't align with new SOLAR category tab

The new solar-panel icon, advertising the sponsored Solar pseudo-category, does not properly line up with the tab with which it's supposed to be associated. UPDATE 17 Nov 2010:  The positioning has been fixed, by replacing the image-only link to "Gifts" with something shorter.

Arduino with solar panel

How can I charge 12V Li-ion or lead acid batteries using a solar panel? I also wish to interface the three, i.e. the Arduino, the solar panel and the battery, together so that the Arduino is basically driven by the battery but as the battery discharges, the solar panel would charge it. What circuitry do I need? Also tell the specifications of the solar panel.

Is there a way to use Solar energy to power an attic space

I am wondering if there is a way to use solar energy to power a room through solar power. I have an attic space that I would like to finish in my home, however, I think it would be cool to use solar panels, inverters and batteries to power the rooms (electrical outlets and lights) is there an easy way to do this?

There Should be a Solar contest

There should be a solar energy contest, I'm sure there are lots of awesome ideas out there. I'm thinking solar powered coffee machine, kite wind generator, ..... Maybe categories like small gadgets, garden, home power, cooking? Prizes like a 100w photovoltaic panel, solar cell phone chargers, Stirling engine for the coffee cup.Lets put our heads together on this.

Solar Power Kits

Another Big Update! We've come a long way since 'How to Build a Qwik-Solar' (Over 9,000 views - Awesome!).  Qwik-Solar has now 'grown up' and become the iPower Station, producing more power - with easy to assemble frame kits and complete power packs. They can charge any power  pack with a 12 volt outlet and include key safety features (switches and fuses) for worry free use.  We've made it one of the best portable solar generators which can be used for cookouts, camping, tail gate parties, and emergency power. For industrial mobile solar power - We've teamed up with McGivern to provide solar Work Pods - with up to a 1,000 watt array! Last, we have Suntigo micro-grid kits for homeowners (with exciting news coming soon on new systems!)     iPower Stations are available from 45 Watts up to 85 Watts, with or without a power pack. Find all our solar generators here: Solar Mak And Thanks to everyone that's made Qwik-Solar such a success!

Solar Generator Kit

We're now offering solar panel kits - 45 watt, 65 watt, and 85 watt - when combined with a battery pack makes a great solar generator for emergencies or for fun. Solar Pax generators are the 'bigger brother' of the Qwik-Solar.   Solar Pax has very minimum assembly - and everything is already wired with quick connects.  Use to charge any battery pack with a 12 volt outlet.  We make these kits in Ohio. We set up a 'Mini-Catalog' on our website to make ordering easy. And we put together a page on our other site "Lamp Light from Sunlight" you might enjoy - it shows a 'Solar Pax' from 1954.   Update:  We've changed some domain around to better reflect our solar generator line up - the 'lamp light from sunlight' link above is active again.

6v solar panel for charging

Is a 6v solar panel (260 mah) enough to charge 4 AA NIHM battery? The four batteries in serie amount to 4,8 volts, and  fully charged they can amount to 5,5v. I'm planning to add a diode, that can drop the voltage by 0,2v.

How to measure solar energy collected?

If this isn't the right section to post this question, please direct me to a more appropriate place.  So I am pretty knowledge-less about solar energy, so I decided to do some research on it a couple hours ago. Is there a simple way to measure the solar energy that is collected? From what I understand, determining if it is cost efficient to implement solar energy is very dependent on how much sunlight is collectible, which seems to be very location-dependent.  The only solar device I really have available are the $2 outdoor solar lights made by Westinghouse (purchased at Walmart, impossible to miss). Anyways, the device works by collecting solar energy with the panel on top, and converted to be stored in the rechargeable Ni-Cd AA Battery. Would I be better off trying to measure the amount stored in the battery for a period of time, or is there a way of measuring the solar light collected accurately? As I said, I am extremely new to this topic,  so I apologize if any of this was too vague or incorrect. Constructive criticism never hurts :). Any ideas or suggestions?
