I need to build a unit capable of supplying a timed spark. At approx 1 sec intervals. The unit will need to be small/cheap to build and be able to supply current as to generate a timed spark across two electrodes via 240v power supply. The unit I am attempting to build is a flammable gas warning/ignition device. The purpose of it is to ignite the first immediate gas detected, as to avoid a larger detination later. The unit will be made of machined aluminum. It will consist of a vapour detector hooked to a fan unit, which inturn vents the gas to the ignition device. Thus igniting the gas. At the moment I am working on the ignition system, hence the question. Thanks for any help.

Yesterday we announced Spark, a new platform for 3D printing, and that we were going to build a 3D printer. We've decided to share some more details about the printer here on the Instructables forums. Here are two images of prints made with the prototype printer. Things are very exciting here! We'll have more to share over the coming weeks.

I had just built a marx generator! It is my first marx generator I have ever built, and it make amazingly long, loud sparks, I managed to generate sparks up to 2 inches long (5 centimeters), that is about 50Kv (50,000v) coming out if this generator! If you don't know what is a marx generator, look here on Wikipedia.I hope you like the pictures I have just taken! Sorry, no video yet... :(Has anyone of you built a marx generator before? Should I make an instructable how to build a marx generator?(UPDATE)It is done! I made the instructable!

Me and my friends made a potato gun and we used a BBQ lighter to make a spark jump between to wires. But i have been trying to make a remote to make it shoot. Every thing works but to get a spark i have to touch the wires together but i need the spark to jump without touching the wires. Anyone know???

Hi I perform at celtic and ren fairs, I bellydance and I am trying to find some way that I can have something in my hand that would put of a spark when I dance. Sometime I dance at night and it would look cool. Can anyone help me with some ideas. Thanks Witchdragon13

So, there are a lot of people posting articles on how to make tasers, most of these only spark if they touch something conductive. I would like to ask, how can you make the current jump between the two wires without touching something conductive? thanks

Hi everyone! Why does electricity cause sparks? I have two scenarios in my mind, and i hope someone can provide me good answers. 1) I have seen on a lot of occasions, for instance the main transformers near my home, the wires sometimes keep sparking near the area where the wires are joined to it. Why does it spark? What is actually happening? And i do know that it might be caused by an overload or a short-circuit or stuff, i am not talking about what caused the sparking, but what is happening when one occurs. Why not just burst into flames, or heat red hot like a metal filament or something? 2) I have also observed sparks when, lets say i suddenly pull out the plug from the socket with the switch still ON, or sometimes even when i turn ON/OFF a switch driving a load. Why does this occur?

I was looking at this page on flybacks, and I was reading about the transistors, when I realized that I don't know anything about picking transistors out. I'm an electronics noob, what can I say. Would these work? The flyback is going to be from an OLD computer monitor. I need help.

Okay, some of you are asking me to zap, shock, things with my 50Kv marx generator.Say what you want me to zap in the comment and I will see if I can do it, and post the photos here on this forum topic. I might do a slideshow...Oh, and here's an instructable about building a marx generator. Build a simple Marx Generator(UPDATE)I posted some of the videos! Sorry for the bad quality, I used a crappy camera... :( I hope you enjoyed it!

I have been working on my plasma speaker for a long time, after I got everything working, I was about to take a good video of it working. But just then, the MOSFET exploded, and made a huge puff of smoke... Dang! Delayed again! I made and completed the instructable on making a plasma speaker (some of you might had seen it as you are subscribed to me), but I just need a video to prove that the plasma speaker is working. I was going to post the instructable today, but the MOSFET delayed it... :-( It may be a few more days before the instructable is published...

I have a serious issue with utilizing an H-bridge to switch polarity of high voltage electromagnets. The voltage is roughly 110 DC rectified from mains. Every mosfet I use has exploded when I tried to switch the mosfets. I tried using relays but they keep arcing and tripping my breaker. I would very much like to know if it was possible to make a spark gap that works similar to a NPN transistor.

The 2 images are the type of stun gun parts I have, I believe its a spark gap igniter one but m not 100% on that as I would rather leave it in the cardboard circular case unless I get confirmation it could be modified. What kinds of projects could this be used for, I'm pretty sure its DC powered and attempted putting the outputs to curved metal electrodes for a Jacobs ladder but arc stays in one spot after many adjustments. Ive only worked with HVAC with an unrectified flyback for plasma globes. Anyone have any suggestions on what to pump this badboy into. P.S. Using 2 metal screws from an Xbox 360 and putting them very close together makes a very nice whistle to it, :).

I've always thought that it was magnesium, but I've heard that titanium is used. It seems titanium would be mucho-expensive for what it does. Does anyone know anything about it? If I find anything with a reasonable price, I may make a project about it. Thanks, Bran.

Joho! i am making something similar to the "fireslinger" made by tetranite. The big difference is that mine w ill use short jolts of gasoline, that come from a perfume tester, so there will be short big flames, but i need something to ignite the small cloud of gasoline. the problem is, that it cant be a flame, or a torch, because it will be mounted on the wrist. so i will need a reliable ignition source, like a electric shock, the only problem with electricity i use, is that the sparks are too small to ignite everything, so i need bigger sparks, made by anything that will easily spark!

Deodorant bomb : me and my best mate was wondering could you make a Deodorant bomb by putting two screws into a full (ish) can and making a spark between the two screws with a sparking devise ... or would the liquid Deodorant just stop it from happening .... please get back .... really wanna know ....cheers ryan .

Hello all, I recently found this real old lighter in my basement, so I tried to light it, got some sparks, but the fuel was empty. So I put some fluid in, but had to take out the springy thing with the flint to put it in. Now, there are no sparks, no matter how hard I try to make them. Any suggestions?

Based on Sir9's project http://sdch2o.free.fr/vrac/Sir9-Plasma-Steam-Engine.doc I am preparing to make my own version: The plan is to create a Tesla Turbine powered by steam which is made on the plasma spark from a Tesla Coil - Presumably if Sir9 used just 110 V, the really high voltage of the Tesla Coil should give me Big effects I am not sure about what size, shape and material I should use for the combustion chamber, and whether I can use multiple spark plugs safely. I'm planning to use a small 220v // 2,1kV microwave oven transormer for the coil just to keep things farely safe for the beginning and a turbine made of hard disk drives (about 16 plates) sealed in a plexi-glass chamber I have a lot more questions coming up every minute, need any help I can get - this is my first project of it's kind Thnx

My challenge is to produce a reliable 10kV spark generator which will cut me craters with a plasma arc. You can see the general idea on my blog: http://www.wikihow.com/Etch-Your-Own-Crater? The 10kV spark generator is my missing ingredient, so Instructables please step forward with a design! Once running we can re-create any planetary feature by means of Cathodic or Anodic erosion. I believe this is a genuine alternative to the current 'impact crater' scenario, so favoured by astronomers.

Alright, for one of my upcoming Instructables, I need to capture tiny sparks or flashes of light (same thing, just not sure exactly what to call them) on video and take a picture also. I've tried and tried, but no matter how dark the room is, I just can't seem to get it on video. Even if I see it myself, for some reason it doesn't show up on camera. Is it possibly due to the fact that the light I'm trying to capture is ultraviolet light turned into blue light? Thanks!

I am a chemistry teacher and I need to make a set of explosions for the football team to run through. The run on the field and the explosions go off on each side of them Any ideas. I may fill a dozen metal coated baloons with hydrogen and, and ignite them with some sort of electric spark strong enough to pepetrate the baloon. I'll put six of them on each side of the path that the team runs out through under the goal post. And how will I make the system to spark them off (electric plug in?)(capacitors, tesla coils, etc.?) thanks

Here's the setup: one LED with its leads tied by conductive threads to magnets which stick to a watch battery, in contact with skin for multiple hours. I had somebody say that this somehow was zapping them (enough to leave a rash). Is this possible? I've handled lit LEDs with watch batteries a lot (even underwater) and never felt a thing! No spark, no zap, no shock, nothing. So have I just been lucky? Can this setup actually zap you enough to feel it, or even irritate your skin? Or was the zapping perhaps an allergic reaction to the nickel magnets which was mistaken for being sparked?

Hi, I would like to submit an instructable to the Epilog and Pocket sized electronics challenges. It is a spark/electric arc generator, which has many uses such as using it as a spark gap radio transmitter, igniting flammable gasses or liquids (camping stoves), or using the high voltage to charge capacitors. The circuit is based on that of a DIY stun gun, so the project could be used as a stun gun. In the rules it says the project can't be 'potentially dangerous'. So would this project be disqualified from the challenges for being too dangerous? I would of course warn people not to use it as a stun gun in the instructable. Thanks in advance :) Detective Inspector Me

Need new or used SCR for induction furnes! please any one who can help me! i need an SCR (Thyristor) , i dont care if its used or unused, i just cant justify the cost of a new one till i can be sure it will work; look at the picture below, iam replaceing the spark gap with an SCR. I put a drawing of a tesla coil diagram to compare with a simple spark gap induction drawing. $5 to $10 is in my price range till i know it will work. (voltage or amperage doesnt matter i would just like to see what there capable or if i can make it work for an induction furnes.)

I am currently brainstorming a firework ignition liquid that contains what i call (sparkler dust) sparklers work by a flame burning a concealed paper packet of (sparkler dust) once this ignites the sparkler sends colored sparks everywhere. now thought that would be an excellent ignition system for fireworks
