Is it possible to build a spark gap using a fluorescent light ballast?

This is for a school project. We need to build a spark plug out of an LRC circuit and a 1.5 V D size battery. I was hoping to do it with a fluorescent light ballast as an inductor. The longer the spark in distance, the better.  Thanks.

First marx generator (Sparks!)

I had just built a marx generator! It is my first marx generator I have ever built, and it make amazingly long, loud sparks, I managed to generate sparks up to 2 inches long (5 centimeters), that is about 50Kv (50,000v) coming out if this generator! If you don't know what is a marx generator, look here on Wikipedia.I hope you like the pictures I have just taken! Sorry, no video yet... :(Has anyone of you built a marx generator before? Should I make an instructable how to build a marx generator?(UPDATE)It is done! I made the instructable!

Regulating a Spark

I need to build a unit capable of supplying a timed spark. At approx 1 sec intervals. The unit will need to be small/cheap to build and be able to supply current as to generate a timed spark across two electrodes via 240v power supply. The unit I am attempting to build is a flammable gas warning/ignition device. The purpose of it is to ignite the first immediate gas detected, as to avoid a larger detination later. The unit will be made of machined aluminum. It will consist of a vapour detector hooked to a fan unit, which inturn vents the gas to the ignition device. Thus igniting the gas. At the moment I am working on the ignition system, hence the question. Thanks for any help.

Electric Ignition?

So I have made two different versions of this spark generator, one used a Marx generator design and the other with a voltage multiple design. Both are working well, but when I expose a lighter fluid soaked wick to either one neither can start the fire. So the only thing I can think of is that while I am generating the spark it isn't hot enough or I am generating the spark before the vapors can achieve the correct oxygen/fuel mixture. Any ideas? Both use a modified Flyswatter circuit.

From what I can tell they keep the high voltage from interfering with mains power, but that doesn't make sense to me?

Why does electricity cause sparks?

Hi everyone! Why does electricity cause sparks? I have two scenarios in my mind, and i hope someone can provide me good answers. 1) I have seen on a lot of occasions, for instance the main transformers near my home, the wires sometimes keep sparking near the area where the wires are joined to it. Why does it spark? What is actually happening? And i do know that it might be caused by an overload or a short-circuit or stuff, i am not talking about what caused the sparking, but what is happening when one occurs. Why not just burst into flames, or heat red hot like a metal filament or something? 2) I have also observed sparks when, lets say i suddenly pull out the plug from the socket with the switch still ON, or sometimes even when i turn ON/OFF a switch driving a load. Why does this occur?

How can I make a spark gap powered by a 9 volt battery?

I had an idea for a project where I will (literally) Set Fire To The Rain. So I need a spark gap. Anyone know how to do this? I think it would be easy to charge, then discharge a flash capacitor. If that's a good plan, where can I find a schematic for a charging circuit?

Weak spark (orange glow) on late model pickup truck

So  I have a 95 chevy C-1500 5.7 V8, Been having some progressively worse problems with it running rough and hesitating when accelerating. I will be re-timing it soon but that is a separate issue for the moment, When I tested the ignition system I noticed the spark tester was glowing orange/red instead of blue. (I can't even get my timing light to fire) It was due for new plugs and wires so I replaced both. The Ignition coil is less then a year old and I just finished replacing the Rotor and distributor cap. Still have an orange spark. I really need to fix this before I can time it, Any Ideas?

Is there a simple electric component that acts like a spark gap? something that will not conduct until a voltage is reached? i would like to replace the inefficient spark gap in the Tesla coil. also, also voltage needs to be very precise, the breakdown voltage across a gap varies for a clean oscillation. then, the coil should be less noisy.

I have a Sharp sd-at1000 surround sound reciever, and while trying to hook up a speaker(front left if that matters) it sparked and turned off. Now when I turn it on it says "Hello" on the lcd and stays on for about 1 second before turning back off. From what I've found through research it seems to be a output transistor. Does this sound right? Looking at the circuit board I couldnt find anything that looked bad. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Can I use a regular digital thermometer as a cylinder heat temp gauge?

Hey guys, I want to make a cheap cylinder head temperature gauge for my 150cc scooter. I have owned one before which worked well but it was rather expensive. I'm more interested in being able to detect a temperature spike and avoid a blown motor than determining an acurate temperature. The last gauge I owned used a probe with a ring on the end that acted as a washer between the spark plug and the head. If I buy one of these probes:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Thermocouple-CHT-Sensor-Probe-Cylinder-Head-Temperature-14mm-/120861470119?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2 And a digital thermometer with a probe like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Digital-Blue-LCD-Temperature-Meter-50-150-Probe-/230650228821?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash;=item35b3d33055 Could I just splice the wires together and be away laughing? I'd need to find out what the temp range of my engine is first.....my last 2-stroke 150cc ran at about 275F and melted at 400F, 4-strokes should run cooler right? Any thoughts would be appreciated :)

Make a small battery operated spark gap?

I want to make a potato gun but I don't want to use a grill ignitor (unreliable) and I don't really want to buy a taser (kind of expensive) to light it. I would really like to build some simple battery powered high voltage circuit capable of making a small spark or operating a spark plug. I would like it to meet these requirements. 1. Minimal circuitry. 2. No flyback. 3. Fits in/on an altoids tin I'm still just beginning to understand circuitry so the less complex the better.

Why isn't my medium spark gap Tesla coil working? Answered

I am building a medium Tesla coil. I have checked all the parts of it and I cant find out why it isn't working.  The hv transformer is a 12kv neon sign transformer. There is a gfci but it isn't tripping. For a spark gap, I'm using a single spark gap made of copper. I have tried putting them at various lengths away, but they still don't fire. The capacitors have a total capacitance of 14.1nF and are rated at 15kv. They are ceramic capacitors and current is flowing through them. The primary coil is 0.25 in copper tubing held with 0.25 inches between the windings, of which there are 7.5. I have tried using 1-7.5 turns, and that didn't make a difference. My secondary coil consists of 2032 turns of 32 awg wire around a 4 in inner diameter pvc pipe. I can verify that the 12kv is going through all of the places it is supposed to go through. I have no idea why this isn't working, could anyone help me here?

Creating a spark gap using assorted ceramic capacitors Answered

I have a load of assorted ceramic capacitors. Can I create a capacitor bank to power a spark gap, and if so, how? Since it is voltage that matters for spark gaps, most of these capacitors have obscure codes on them, which I cannot find any information about on the internet, but some have voltages marked on then. I have 4 blue 2kV capacitors, 9 brown 1kV capacitors and 2 large, flat 1000V capacitors. Thanks in advance for any help!

Where to get piezo igniters?

I have several lighters that I still like, either for their design or intended purpose. But over the years some failed to produce proper sparks with the piezo. For some I could salvage replacements from cheap lighters but not so much for the longer ones - the type to get your bbq or oven going. Here the wire from the igniter is in ne long piece going all the way from the piezo, through the long neck to the flame outlet. As the wires in those piezo igniters are aluminium it is next to impossible to attach a longer wire as usually there is no room for crimped connections and the isolation is a problem too. I also have one particular lighter that uses a slightly longer and thicker piezo igniter, the common ones don't work here as they are too short. Adding more support underneath is a no go as the shorter ones have less travel when activated. Last but not least is one lighter that requires a piezo with not just the little metal cap at the end but with a full metal body for the stationary part. The lighter in question does not work with standard types even if I add a little metal strip to make proper contact. Problem is simply put that like this the standard ones arch over and no spark comes out of the wire. So big question: Is there any supplier or Ebay shop where one could actuall see the various types of piezo igniters and order them in small or single quantities? So far I already struggled to find a source for the crappy standard ones and the only one I found wanted to charge $ 2.95 US per igniter plus postage. Sounded a bit greedy to me considering I can buy a complete lighter with it for around one single buck...
