How to thread an aluminium rod

Hi, I have got some 1 inch aluminium pipes (GI pipes) which I want to thread. I got the threading machine (hand held racheting type) and when I try to thread using that, it goes about 2 threads and after that, its pain - so stiff and even after exerting all my force, the pipe wont thread. I had read that to thread easier, you should coat the pipe with Wax or threading oil. Is there any other tips or tricks that you have used for threading? Any input is greatly appreciated. Regards, Sujith

where to buy inexpensive solderable conductive thread (or fine wire for making my own)?

Anybody know good places to buy fairly inexpensive solderable conductive thread (or thin non-kinking wire for making my own)? I don't intend to use it in a sewing machine, my goal being just flexible without kinking. I'd like a nice selection of metal colors also if possible. The Karl Grimm threads are pretty, but I've no idea how to order some or how much they cost, but I'm guessing expensive.

Depth of the thread cut by a tap?

If I was to drill a deeper hole, I buy a longer drill bit of the intended diameter.  I am sure the same thing apply to the taps as well.  However, in their specifications, I do not see anything about how deep a cut they would make.  So, my question is, what should I be looking if I need to make a deeper thread than than the tap I already have?  I mean is there a number which would say that this tap goes only one inch deep and so on? Thanks.

alternative to conductive thread.

Ok guys, so i was finishing up a project with my guitar, and i ended up replacing the strings. so i though to myself... what can these be used for. I decided to use them in a project im working on involving a belt, and regular wire would not work well. So, i weaved the guitar string throughout the belt, like you would with conductive thread, and its very very strong, and also flexible. And since its meant to withstand a beating it should last nearly forever. The strings i found to work best are the 3 smallest ones, E B and G, the others are too rigid to bend as much as needed. in the picture that is the third string, so it is more rigid then the first on would be, and i found it to work excellently for what i needed it to.

Navigating large-response topics

As a participant in AngryRedHead's Photo challenge, I've noticed that, as the thread gets longer, navigating it to find my past comments and replies is getting... odd. Using the next and previous buttons seems mixed up.  Sometimes you don't get a new set of comments, sometimes you get a few extra comments in between the ones you already saw, sometimes nothing happens. Similar things happen on other topics with large numbers of responses. (Running XP and up-to-date FireFox)

Super awesome secret thread! WOOT!

WHY DID YOU CHANGE?!? Why did you change what was good? This new site is awful! I see pics with no idea of what I'm looking at because the titles and brief descriptions are gone. I can't even hover and get a mouse over text. BTW - the pages don't format right in my OS / Browser combo - couldn't you have tested this first? This was a great site that needed no tweaking. Sad, so very sad....

Suggestions. Locking threads, and suggestion forum.

(I'm positive someone suggested this before) I think we should be able to lock our topics when we want people to be able to read the thread and the comments on it, and don't want people to post on it (for whatever reason, everyone's would be different I'm sure.) One reason I could think of someone asked a question (pre answers section) and someone answered their question, and they don't want people posting on it (for their own reasons). They could click the edit button, on the edit page, their could be another button that says, "Lock this thread." Click that button would lead to a page that said something like, "Are you sure you want to lock this topic?" If they clicked yes, it would be a locked. If they clicked no, it wouldn't be locked. If they ever change their minds, they could un-lock it the same way they locked it. (Click edit, press unlock, and click yes, unlock) Thanks.

Thread replies are showing out of context

Timeline:  Ever since the update to the visual layout where the replies etc to are outlined with a fancy new box (handy feature) -- Symptom: The replies are showing as being to the wrong parent - as in they are embedding a level deeper to the wrong person.  I got a notification that I had received a reply (see attached) that the person had said "coolio!" to me, yet on examination, it renders as a child comment to AngryRedHead. I've noticed this ALL OVER, when live replying, it will show new comments as sibling level replies rather than child level replies.  ex: Parent thread. -->reply1 -->reply2 .....--->child reply to reply1  ..... = indent

Spam Threads

There are a load of spam threads starting, especially for websites selling sporting stuff. Please do not reply to them, just flag them for review then let them fade away down the list of threads. If you want to make a comment, PM the "member" who started the thread.

I wonder why it is still happening...? (EDIT)

Usually, when I start a forum thread, it appears in the lists instantly.Sometimes, though, it doesn't.For instance, this thread made a lot more sense on the day I clicked "publish", and three other recent threads have taken time to appear as well:Job vacancy thread.Weird people thread.Pirate day thread.Does anybody have an explanation or hypothesis for the phenomenon?EDIT:This thread is currently hiding - please read it, especially if you are a UK ibler.

The Official Failed and Unfinished Projects Thread

This is a thread for everyone to post pictures of their failed and/or unfinished projects. That way when people need ideas for something to build they can come to this thread and find someone's project and build it and improve on it and maybe make it work. There is one rule in this thread: IF YOU USE SOMEONE ELSE'S IDEA/MECH/PROJECT, YOU MUST GIVE THEM CREDIT. I will start the thread off with some pictures of my uncompleted projects. Here is the link to the album on photobucket because I find it easier to upload them there: http://s247.photobucket.com/albums/gg159/jollex/Uncompleted%20Projects/ Guest password is knexinnovation

where can I buy threaded (screw together) tube/pipe?

I'm looking for threaded pipe in small sizes (ID 6mm to 10mm) with thin walls.  Metal, plastic, whatever.  I need both threaded on the inside and outside so they can be screwed together.  I only need a small quantity, such as a few feet.  Thanks.

forked threads and linear threads

Hi. It's about how are organized threads into forums. Currently forum threads are forked : you can reply to a comment separately, and each of your reply will make a new fork if somebody reply to your new comment ... this makes threads like trees ... Personally, I don't find this system very handy, more particularly when the same thing is being actively discussed in several forks. This system is good for short chats and when commenting instructables, but when it's about debating, it quickly becomes confusing ... For the forums, I'd prefer a system with a linear thread where messages are ordered according to time, and where we have to quote the persons we want to reply to. Several discussion could get "multiplexed" on the same thread, but personally, I find that less confusing as long as there are quotes. What's your preference ?

Help on attaching threaded rod to motor

Hello all quick question for you: what is the best way to attach a threaded rod to a motor shaft. This would be similar to a CNC setup. I know you could use a dual shaft collar but I was wondering if there's perhaps a simpler solution?

the use of threaded rods for cnc miller and cnc 3d printers

I got some threaded rods today. They look straight. 16 threads per inch.  The tag on one of the shorter ones says 3/8" - 16x36", course threads, zinc plated 1700lb. I was planning to use these for the x,y,z control for a 3d miller/printer. I realize it may be slow. Someone mentioned that the McWire repstrap uses a 4 1/20 (the only part I understand is 20 threads per inch) was really slow, but someone made it work with 2 1/16. I did not really have plans to attempt position verification because I think the resistance vs torque should be minimal for a threaded rod setup. I figure I could get away with just sending it specific pulses for a specific amount of time. Could I have some feedback on this?

Rotary Tool neck thread size

I have several ideas for rotary tool accessories that would make my life easier, but they would have to be attached at the neck. So I need to cut out a hole, and tap it out to the right thread size. Anyone know what that is?

Notes on Specific Laws - the second Law

Second LawAn unsuitable thread isolated from replies will descend the list into obscurity. This is an "anti-spam" law. We have all seen threads appear that advertise odd things - trainers, dating sites, Chinese plastic-moulding factories - and we all agree they should no be here. It is tempting to reply to the threads to express our chagrin, but that makes the thread bob to the surface again, pushing more useful threads down.Far better to flag the thread and let it slide down the list until it disappears. In addition, this law can also be applied to trolls - if somebody starts a thread specifically to start an argument (as opposed to a discussion), or just to put another user or group of users down, then they are trolling. Those threads should also be allowed to slide.Addendum to the second lawSpam advertisers may be chastised through the Private Message system to prevent their thread's longevity. If you cannot resist giving a spammer a piece of your mind, the PM system is very useful - the spammer gets an email alert to your comment, they are aware of your feelings, but the thread is undisturbed.Similarly a troll may be gently reminded of the site's Be Nice policy via a PM. Should the troll decide to respond with vitriol, they are deprived of the audience they crave. Finally, you can help the site financially - using a PM to casually point out the correct route for advertising could, perhaps, result in a new fee-paying advertiser for the site.

where to buy: *threaded* aluminium pipe/fittings

Hello everyone! I have been searching the web for a good source of aluminium pipe (between 1" and 2" thick) with threaded endings and matching fittings. Can anyone suggest a good source? Searching the instructables forums I read about www.simplifiedbuilding.com, but they don't seem to have threaded fittings (only of a slip-on, use-a-set-screw kind). Any suggestion greatly appreciated! Happy '09! James

clear coated non-kink wire or conductive thread?

I'm hunting for fine, non-kink wire or conductive thread. It needs to be coated since I intend to twist two wires together, stripping the coating where I attach an LED. I like the silver/gold colors of the wire, so I want something clear coated. Or if anybody knows of a coating solution that I could apply to my wire/thread, that would work also. Thanks.

Threaded Brass Inserts, 6-32, Sonic Weld, Press or Solder.

Add threads to new projects as well as modify or repair existing products. If the plastic you are using can be melted with a soldering iron you can place the insert on the part you want to add threads to. Then heat the insert with a soldering iron and press in to the part as the insert melts the plastic. Try with and without pilot hole. Excess plastic can be cleaned up with a dremel tool. You can also try soldering the inserts to the surface of metals that can be soldered such as copper and brass. Add these as threaded standoffs by soldering to bare copper on you circuit boards. Just the right color for steam punk projects. This part can be pressed into some materials with the right size pilot hole. Get them here: 50 pieces for $9.00. A few times recently, I have posted forum topics and they have taken time to appear. For instance, I posted this electronics question about 15 hours ago as I type, and it still hasn't shown, despite adding a "bump" post myself.I have noticed other people complaining about this issue as well.Is there are bug? Or is it something else?

(If someone could please move this to bugs, I was unable to) A week ago, I found out that I couldn't post on threads with more than a few posts. I can't make a new post, or a reply. I now this isn't because I'm a non-pro, because I see non pros post new comments, and reply to mine, but I can't reply. It started to happen around the same time we got the new comment post thingy.

Deleted post messes up "most recent"

I flagged a recent post as spam on the DIY air powered moped thread.  This post (along with some others? I thought there were more than 15) appears to have been deleted, but the thread is still at the top of the "most recent posts" ordering despite the most recent remaining post being from 2008. Looks like deleting a post from a thread should trigger a re-evaluation of the date ordering?  Either that or the ordering doesn't respect deleted posts...

My Next Ball Machine

Hello everyone! I've started building my last large ball machine, and I'm doing something I've never done before... posting construction pictures! I'm excited about posting frequent updates. Since these updates will be weekly (and sometimes more frequent than that), I'm posting these pictures in a forum thread on SSCoasters right here. In this thread you'll find descriptions for the pictures and more information on what I plan to do with this ball machine. I recommend you check it out if you want to see updates. ;-) Below I have a few pictures of the ball machine. I won't be posting here as often as in the construction thread, but there will be a few pictures added here from time to time. Again, explanations for the pictures are on the thread, so I won't bother posting them here (I'm lazy aren't I). Thanks for viewing! -Shadowman39
