Tesla Coils?

I've looked all over the 'net for info on how Tesla coils work, bu all of them are too complicated. Can someone help me? Goodhart mentioned:"...This (negative ion generators), in conjunction with a larger Tesla coil can produce even nastier voltage spikes if one tweaks the 555 a bit.." How? I only want to make a (very) small one. I don't understand what the spark gaps are for, the coil parts I kinda understand, but all the rest is too confusing.

Tesla Coil Workshop

Instructables member Phenoptix put me onto a fun event this weekend - two chaps from the Extreme Electronics (Derek and Dave) website led an informal workshop on how to build a classic Tesla coil, from power supply through to topload and breakout. They also brought along a few of their toys to demonstrate what they were talking about, and I grabbed a few (shaky) videos. Thanks to Derek & Dave, it was a grand night, and thanks to the "Lone Scout" for the supply of coffee.

Tesla Coil with MOT's

Hello everyone, I am looking to get some advise. I am building a Tesla coil and cant really get any transformers other than MOT. I have four MOT with all their other components (Capacitors). What I am asking is can I use these MOT wired up in a certain way and I also read somewhere that I would need to add a component to prevent the MOT's from sucking in too much power. If anyone out there can give me some detailed advise it will be great. I just started the build so pictures are coming soon. Thanks in advance to you all

tesla coil grounding?

I am building a tesla coil, the first i have ever built. I know that one side of the secondary coil is supposed to be grounded (the other side being the donut). Problem is, i am not clear where to ground it to. The ground socket on the wall outlet? a nail stuck in the ground? the negative terminal on the first transformer? I'd like to have this straightened out.

Tyler Christensen, or christensent of MITERS, the MIT Electronic Research Society, took a more high-voltage approach to Halloween this year.  He made this awesome dual resonant solid state tesla coil (DRSSTC) hat! Last year he was responsible for the "Build a Fusion Reactor" Instructable.  This year, his likeness to a mad scientist seems to be increasing!  How long before we see him splice a tesla coil and a human?! Tesla coil music?

So, I have noticed that music can be played with a tesla coil.  I originally thought it could be done just by using a plasma speaker as the input for the primary coil, but now that I have realized this won't work because of a spark gap and capacitors I am stumped.  Will using an inductor (i think that is right) which allows current to pass sixty times in one second yield a 60Hz pitch?

First Tesla Coil Answered

I purchased a small tesla coil kit online.  The kit is working but I need help improving it. Instead of having the typical primary and secondary windings with a toroid on top it has the driver circuit pulse a 50k transformer producing a 1 inch spark.  I'm wondering can the output of the transformer be connect to a typical primary windings and secondary windings with a toroid on top? I have a link below to the schematic. Also if this works would you recommend 1000 or 2000 turns on the secondary and how many on the primary?  30 or 36 gauge for the secondary? Tesla Coil MMC

Hello. I am currently trying to build a Tesla coil. However, due to a little mistake my MMC only has about 1/4th of the capacitance required to get it to resonate . Now I wonder what the best course of action would be. add a resistor to reduce the amount of amps to 1/4th of its maximum (6000 volt, 5 mA instead of 6000 volt, 20 mA), and thus the capacity required for resonance (I have a variable resistor here). Or just run it with full power, which would mean it would most likely not function as good as it could (spark gap fires 4 times where it only should fire once) I am currently not capable of adding up extra capacitors to the bank due to a lack of money, but might decide to do this in the furture Help would be appriciated.

Tesla Coil Safety?

My high school recently had an engineering fair, and my friend had built a tesla coil. Its has multiple spark gaps, an RF filter (I think thats what its called), a 120 to 20000v transformer, and toroid top-load, if any of that matters. We/I would entertain ourselves by standing away from the coil and holding a fluorescent tube (by the glass with bare hands, not by the contacts) near the top-load and watching it light up. Even though I was well away from the coil, my forearm muscles would twitch, especially it the coil spark hit the contact on the other side of the tube. Then if anybody touched me, both of us would feel a shock and the same slight twitching (the same kind of twitching you feel from those electric muscle stimulators with the pads you put on sore muscles). We even set up a chain of about 5 people holding hands, and all of us would feel a shock, even though only the first person in the line (aka me)  was holding the fluorescent tube near the coil, with my hand on glass, no where within range of the streamers coming from the top-load. Now for my question: is this dangerous? (I know its non-lethal, im talking about my nerves) And what exactly was happening? because it was not an incredibly large coil, and i know that the field of a coil is much larger than the actual streamers. I also read somewhere that insulators dont work the same at incredibly high voltages. I think what I was feeling was the skin effect, and the charge came from the excited electrons in the tube. If my ideas are correct, then wouldn't me holding the tube be just the same as if i had just put my hand near the top-load and let the streamers hit me?

Pancake Coil

Hello, I was going to try building an old Tesla "Pancake" Coil, and then write an instructable for it. (please don't steal my idea!) Does anyone have any information or building techniques at all that they can give me to help? The Pancake coil is just a Tesla Coil that has a flat secondary, as well as a flat primary. Tesla used it in his early radio and wireless power transmission research. The primary circuit should be pretty much the same as a conventional Tesla Coil. But I am a bit confused as to how to build the secondary. A few questions I have: What wire gauge should I use (I'm pretty sure that Tesla didn't use magnet wire for this)? How do I determine the space in between the turns? (more to come) I realize that most people don't build these kinds of coils anymore, and therefore most people probably won't be able to answer my questions or give me any info; I'd just thought that I would try and see if any one could. It would help me a lot. Thank you.

NE555 tesla coil Don Smith ignition coil Tesla coil.....?

I know I've requested info on this previously, but there are still some info I am lacking. The questions I have are these: for the 2 nf capacitors, at what voltage rating would be best to use. For the lack of my own intelligence, could somebody tell me in what direction the power flows? (direction in the diagram) I have almost all the parts save for the nf caps and the 2 diodes. does anyone have a suggestion of what kind of HV diode I could use for the 45KV diode? unfortunately the exact rating with 1-2Amps of a 45KV diode so far is WAY to expensive for me. Any suggestions? What would the approximate power output from the ignition coil be?

The "Truth" about Tesla?

These guys at www.lindsaybks.com/gallery/teslamyth/ttesla1.html say that Tesla didn't invent the Tesla Coil, radio, or AC power. Now, I'll admit that I didn't read all of the arguments completely. I did, however, read the Tesla Coil page in its entirety. One claim is that the Tesla Coil was predated by one Elihu Thomson's patent  "Method of and means for producing electric current" (number 500,630). This patent was filed in 1893 - while Tesla's earliest patent on the Tesla Coil, "System of Electric Lighting" (number 454,622) was filed in 1891. Nice try. They are definitely correct, however, in saying that many parts of Tesla's history has been overly-dramatized. For instance, there is a claim that Tesla's remote controlled boat used a primitive form of voice recognition to take spoken commands from his audience. Obviously, it didn't, and the patents show nothing of the like. Do the other claims on their website have any merit?

Resonating my tesla coil? Answered

I have heard a little about resonating a tesla coil and wan't to make sure that it is going to before I spend money for my primary (copper is expensive).  My secondary has about 1400 turns of wire.  I am going to be using a bucket capacitor like The Geek Group on youtube built, and a 60 Hz high voltage transformer.  My primary will hopefully be 1/4 inch, and I wan't to know how many turns I need and if I can do a funnel looking shape like this one Tesla Coil.  One other thing is that my tesla coil is 30 inches tall, so does my primary need to get closer to the top to work.  I think I got all of the primaries and secondaries right, I know which is which, but sometimes I swap the words.  It would be a great help if you answered my question.

Tesla Coil Capacitor help

I have just started building my first tesla coil. I am fairly experienced with electrical stuff and high voltage but I can't seem to get past building a homemade capacitor that will work. My first attempt I built eight Leyden jars in parallel that were constructed from glass canning jars and metal tape. Next I tried lining a 5-gallon bucket inside out with aluminum foil. Lastly I tried assembled a rolled capacitor with aluminum foil as the plates and wax paper as the dielectric (about 10 square feet). All of these have failed in a similar fashion; I hook them into the circuit and the spark gap wont fire. There is no arcing however the bucket and jar constructions made a faint noise similar to a capacitor charging. I have seen instructables and videos with only three or four Leyden jars in parallel and the spark gap is firing. I don't know whether the homemade ones just don’t have enough capacitance or if it is something else. If anybody has any input on the problem please help. P.S. I am using a 14kv 35ma 60hz oil burner ignition to power the coil below is a diagram of the circuit configuration

Help with building a tesla coil? Answered

I want to build a tesla coil, but I want to verify with the instructables community that it won't blow up, burn down my house, turn into skynet, etc. Here's my plaaaauuuuuuhn: For the transformer, I'll be using an old negative ion generator thing that takes in 120VAC and outputs 7.5kv(pic). For the primary, I'll use old speaker wire in  a cone shape (possibly using acrylic). For the secondary, I'll use 32- gauge magnet wire (pic). And for the spark gap, I'll use two bolts in a box, possibly with a computer fan cooling it. And for the capacitors, I'll just use an array of Leyden jars. My questions: 1. What diameter should the coil form be? I have some random white tubing which has an OD of 1/2 inches, 1/2 PVC piping (which actually has an OD of 7/8 inches), and 3/4 inch PVC piping. And is there a better alternative to these? 2. Should I use chokes on the input/output of my transformer? For those, I think I'll just wrap a bunch of wire around a pen. 3. Should I varnish it? 4. How powerful will the EM be from this thing? Exploding computers aren't that good. If I have made any errrors, please tell me.

My First Tesla Coil!

I just made my first tesla coil, it stands only about 6 inches tall and has a diameter of ~1". The tank capacitence is ~940 pF. The wire gauge is 30. The topload is 6 inches in diamerer and 1 inch tall. the power supply is a 7.5kv, 60mA NST with a terry filter. It's a static spark gap. The primary has 13 turns of 14 gauge wire, it's a 30 degree cone.It gives out nice arcs and cornea. I will post photos and video soon, as my workshop reeks of ozone right now.I can probably get better preformance with using thicker (or no) aligator clips (prototype stage right now) and if I change the primary. The wire got too hard to turn, so near the center there's like 2" of leeway on all sides of the secondary... sorry about sound quality in the videothe rod in the video is kinda grounded. The rod you see is a thin copper pipe taped to a 3 foot, 1/4 inch thick dowel rod that I'm holding onto.
