Home Page Layout Suggestion

I was thinking, after seeing the new home page layout, if to fill in the bottom space under subscribed -ibles, why not put a Suggestion Box, with suggestions for instructables you might like. I'm not sure if -ibles supports/records who looks at which instructables, but its just an idea. :D

Slow down cars with trees.

Traffic calming schemes are frequently unpopular with drivers; speed bumps and oddly-placed bollards make life uncomfortable. In Norfolk, England, a new scheme is being presented that slows traffic without even touching the road or obstructing the driver. Two hundred trees have been planted at the boundaries of villages suffering from speeding drivers, and it is the trees that fool drivers into slowing; they are in rows down each side of the road, and as they approach the village, they get slightly closer together, and slightly closer to the road. Seen only in the driver's peripheral vision, the trees give the same subliminal visual clues as increasing speed would, and drivers respond by unconsciously slowing down.  The illusion has slowed traffic by an average of about 3km per hour. The illusion has been used before (rumble strips on the approaches to roundabouts are spaced more and more closely together to create an audible illusion of acceleration), but the more subtle nature of the tree-planting makes it less obvious, and thus harder to resist.  Provisionally seen as a success, more detailed, longer-term results are to be presented to the Department of Transport in the Autumn, with a view to rolling it out on B-roads nationally. Is There Something Wrong With My Tree?

I just checked the water level of my tree. When I pulled my hand out, it was covered in tiny white and black squirming bugs (about the size of a grain of sand). Is that, well, natural for a Turkish Fir tree.

Ash Around Fruit Tree.

Last year some of my fruit trees died because of wood bores and other damaging ground bugs. I remember once hearing that ashes spread around the fruit tree will protect it from these bugs, but I was told that if you spread too much ash around the tree it will be killed. Does anyone know the right amount of ash to use?

Groasis helps trees grow anywhere

Want to plant trees anywhere, even the desert? Then the Graosis Waterboxx might be the solution. It's a container that sits around the base of a young tree. It collects both rainwater and condensation in a reservoir and the water is then wicked down to the roots. Once the tree's roots grow down deep enough to sustain itself, the box can be removed. It seems to be pretty effective, too. While testing in the Sahara desert, 90% of trees that used the Growboxx survived compared to only 10% of the other trees that were planted and watered daily. The next step is to test at 25 locations in 8 different countries.

Xmas tree

Christmas is coming... Have you got your Xmas tree up and dressed yet? Post pictures and show us what your tree looks like! Also, what kind of tree do you use? Real or Fake? My family use a fake tree, we used to use real ones, but we will never again use them again because... After christmas, my dad tried to get rid of the real tree by burning it outside, when he lit it, after a few seconds later, the fire instantly spread around the tree and shot huge flames high as 30 feet... After that, we had got a few complainants from people in the neighborhood about the orange glow. So we never again going to use a real xmas tree because it is dangerously flammable...

Summer: the time of fresh fruit

Summer is almost here in the Northern Hemisphere, and school is out (at least where I live).  All the beautiful trees will soon be producing wonderfully sweet fruits for human and non-human passers-by to gorge themselves on.  With Pears, Apples, Plums, Peaches, Cherries and more, immeasurable numbers of fruit tree species are out there.  What are all of your favorite fruits, and what do you do with them?  Do you eat them raw and whole, in a pastry, jellied, dried, or some other way? Personally, I think Plums fresh from the tree take the cake, but all fruits are delicious.

Creating my own Christmas Tree

I am a university student in a foreign country and I live in a VERY small room...however, sentiment has kicked in, and I want my own christmas tree!! However, I do not want to spend money, I am already on a tight budget, but I also want to craft it myself! I did find an instructable on making a christmas tree out of real tree clippings, but I do not think you can find any real evergreens in Cyprus at least near my place. I also found another tutorial on making the tree out of 300 mountain dew cans, but hello, I do not drink THAT much of beverages :P Do you have any ideas on how to make my own christmas tree cheap and creatively?

Ultralight Portable Greenhouse

I have always wanted to grow a dwarf fruit tree or tropical tree (10-15 ft tall), but living in a townhouse I don't have room to winter a tree indoors. I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of this being done for a single tree? Kind of like a "tree phonebooth" for winter, potentially with a heater run from my outdoor electrical outlet. Any thoughts on where to start? If we can get a theory together I will build it and post it.

Dead Lawn--Fix Ph under evergreen trees.

Coniferous trees (pines, etc) acidify soil under em. Lawn doesn't cope wit this too well. Dump your old boxes of baking soda from freezer/fridge under pine tree. It works. Grass grows better. I'd do an -ible, but didn't bother to take pics. If you try it, maybe take before + after pics and post an -ible.

Help with wire trees

Does anyone know anything about wire trees? How about lapidary tecniques? I need help. I made a wire tree out of laquered wire and I wish to attach small, tumbled stones to the ends of the wires...This is for a rolling ball sculpture project. I plan to have several of these trees (hopefully copper wire; I think I have some) attached to polished spheres made of natural stone that are attached to the frame of the sculpture. The track has 1" or 1/2" glass/polished stone marbles that roll along a flame-soldered wire track that winds in and out of the branches of the trees. How do I attach these tiny stones to the ends of this tree without the fear of them falling off? Some kind of loop? Glue? Both? I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions or advice..

Instructables mentioned in Tree Lobsters! today

I read a few webcomics here and there.  One of my favorites is Tree Lobsters!, a four panel comic about arboreal crustaceans with a scientific and skeptical bent.   I was pleased this morning after I read today's comic, when I tapped the "Secret Message" button at the bottom of the page and found a brief but amusing reference to the site we all know and love.

Electric Eel Powers Christmas Tree

Y'know, I've always wondered about this. An aquarium filled with exotic fish here is using an electric eel to power lights on a Christmas tree. Each time the electric eel at the Aqua Toto Gifu aquarium touches a copper wire in its tank, it sends power that lights up globes decking a Christmas tree. From the Mainichi Daily News. Can't get the link to work to verify, so possibly a hoax.

IMPORTANCE OF FORESTRY AND GARDENING FOR AFRICAN SCHOOL CHILDREN

In The Gambia all schools can participate in a tree nursery competition.  As the children are learning how to grow saplings for reforestation or for having fruit trees in the village, this is a very important activity in their education.  A class in Sambel Kunda village was introduced to the way a tree nursery can be set up, using seeds of the nearby baobab trees, planting them in cans, cups or poly pots.  This is one of the different aid projects contributing to the sustainable development of their village.

Which 'able can I use to launch a rope into a tree?

I recently cut down a tree for the first time, and though nothing damaged and nobody got hurt, it fell in the exact opposite direction that we wanted it to. Part of the reason this happened was because we decided not to tie a rope to the tree, partly because it was very, very difficult to get the rip UP INTO the tree (by tying a hammer to it, and throwing). I saw the net gun 'able, and got me thinking, there's got to be a way to launch a single rope, maybe 30' or 40' up, with some sort of weight on the end, into the top of a tree. It would need a weight heavy enough to drop the end of the rope back down to the ground, in order to tie the proper knot on it, to secure the rope to the tree. I suppose fishing line could be used if it's not strong enough to launch rope, and the rope can be tied onto the line and pulled over. So is there an instructible I should use, or which one should I modify? I have compressed air and proper tools, but I'm not engineering-minded enough to come up with my own (nor do I have the time and money for repeated trial and error).

Natural alternatives for insecticides?

I know its a bit early but the early bird gets the worm!!! In my area pesticides are banned for use on personal gardens and lawns for about 2 years now. Last year my poor peach tree really didn’t have any edible and or usable peaches on my tree because of infestations of bugs. I was wandering if any of you knowledgeable people could direct me on what kind of natural insecticides I could use in the future for my peach tree?so I can at least have some edible peaches for eats and jam. The squirrels usually take their share too. *darn little buggers!!!* Thanks. :)

PALM TREE FRONDS

Hi, We are trying to figure out what kind of material and process to make somewhat realistic palm fronds for our Christmas pageant. We have an 11-foot trunk using a carpet core, which I curved by putting pressure on it overnight.  What should we use for the fronds?  Any ideas to make some that are somewhat believable. I want to get beyond a cardboard cutout. Any ideas from you would be appreciated. Thanks gbhildebrand

I need HELP figuring out what this part is called.

I bought a Halloween tree from home depot, they said I can't return it. The arms are supposed to move, they don't and I can see whats wrong with it and it is an easy fix. However, I have no clue what the part is called. Heres the tree: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Home-Accents-Holiday-72-in-LED-Animated-Tinsel-Ghost-Tree-TY116-1724-1/301148800 The arms are connected to a screw and a plastic piece and that same plastic piece has a hole on the other end that connects to a shaft or cam and wheel on the motor then it moves. I need that plastic piece, I hope someone somewhere knows what its called and hopefully where it is.

Leveling a tree stump

Hi there everyone. So I have a bit of a dilemma. There's 3 or 4 beautiful knotted and dried tree stumps that I pass everyday and I've finally decided I want to drag them back home with me (which is another problem entirely) and use at least one to give my rain barrel some height. It's about a foot and a half in height, and just about thick enough to handle it. My problem is that the top is completely uneven and has been hacked with a chainsaw. I'd need to level the whole thing on top and bottom to make it useable. I just have no idea how I can go about doing this WITHOUT using a chainsaw. Thanks in advance everyone. I'll post photos soonish.

How to deal with sap in christmas tree trunks you want to use

I had an idea to re-use the trunks of Christmas trees my neighbors are throwing away. I sawed off the thick part of the trunk and removed the branches from it. But now I have lots of oozy sap that makes the wood sticky and unpleasant. Any suggestions on what to do? If I stain it or coat in polyurethane will that prevent more sap from oozing out? Ideally i want to slice one trunk into coasters/trivets, keeping the exterior bark intact. The other trunk might become the base for a side table or something similar. Or maybe I'll just hollow it out like a cup and use it as a pencil holder. Thanks for your help! Josh

Free Fruit from your Neighbors

This nytimes article shows just how easy it can be to get free local fruit from trees in your neighborhood. If it's hanging over onto public property, you can go for it. Of course, it's even better to meet the owner and even trade some of your own bounty.I do this pretty often. In my own backyard I get free figs from one neighbor's tree that extends into our space, raspberries off a vine on our fence and oranges from a tree in our yard. Neighbor, Can You Spare a Plum?

There was a parrot in our tree! (updated)

I was on the computer and my dad came inside and told me there was a parrot in our tree! So I grabbed my camera and ran outside. It's a really beautiful bird. We got it to go onto someone's arm and then got it into our garage. Then it landed on my arm so my dad tried to come catch it with a box and it almost got stuck in my hair. Eventually we got it in the box and brought it over to my neighbors house (she was helping us catch it) because my mom would have a cow if she came home and saw that I had a parrot. They're going to call the police department and stuff so they most likely won't be able to keep it :(Update The neighbors had the parrot for quite a while and they had put an and in the newspaper and everything and then they gave it to one of their friends to take care of and then later the person who owned the bird came back from vacation and contacted them about it. I'm not sure what happened after that.

Want to feel *really* small and insignificant?

Maybe you have heard of the "Tree of Life"? It's an old idea, with the first version being sketched by Darwin. There's a new (ish) one out.  I saw rough copies last year, but the reference pages of Dawkin's latest book led me to this web page. The image of the Tree there is, officially, "simplified", but still contains 3000 species, so it has a convenient "you are here" marker (second image, plus PDF file). Apparently, to see it properly, you have to print it out at a size of four and a half feet or more... The tattoo is on the back of Clare D'Alberto, who is working on her Ph.D. in biology at the University of Melbourne, but I'd love to see what the Makers here could do with the original image?

Solar 3w led fibre optic outside tree decoration

So I have salvaged a solar panel and the battery that it charged from a wireless alarm. The battery is 6v 1.2amps. My plan is to have the panel charge the cell during the day (its Ni-Mh) and using an LDR light a 3w led when its dark. The led will be connected to a number of strands of 1.5mm fibre optic cord, with a number of these attached to a tree to make it look.....nice. I have tested three strands of fibre optic cord with lengths of 2m with a lesser led and all appeared fine. I have a 3.7v 700ma driver (coming from China) which will drive one 3w led, along with heat sink. Now is where I am struggling a little, I am not massively experienced in electronics. I think I want a diode attached to the solar panel to avoid battery drain. Then a resistor to reduce my 6v to 3.7-4v and the LDR. Does this look like it would work in principle? Would the battery run 2 of these drivers/leds or would it discharge too rapidly? Thanks for any input!
