Using used capacitors? Answered

I have a Bose amp to fix (car), which in this case means changing out the electrolytic capacitors, as bose used a bunch of not quite sealed ones way back when. So the question is: can I just use the ones I can salvage from all the various boards I've collected, or do they need to be the same brand/grade whatever? I know about polarity and rating (i can reed!?) and can solder/desolder pretty well. I know that there may be other prob's, though the capacitor issue was well known & documented on the web. Thanks to all who help out.

Here's a Good Question

What the Hell are we? In general, I just looked at my hand the other day and thought, you know, if an alien ever came around and they really are spying on us, I bet they're probably thinking we're weird looking things. Wouldn't ya say??? *Trolling enrolls...?*

help america go green

The following is a known fact _________________________________________________________________________ If all Americans used one third less ice in their drinks the United States would become a net exporter instead of an importer of energy. _________________________________________________________________________ c'mon America do you really need ice in that fountain drink you got from a machine that already cools your drink? As a bonus all who do this will earn at least twice(5 times at sonic) the amount of drink they would normally have.

US Army Uniform Info?

I recently purchased a US Army Corporal's uniform. I have the full uniform, excluding the belt and the tie. I have some questions I hope somebody can answer. I bought it at GoodWill, (a thrift store) so it is missing a few pieces. Some of the things I would like to know about it are: -What is it missing? -Where can I find these things? -When was it made/in use? - Why does the armored division patch not have a division number? -What are the numbers on the inside of the collar? -Where can I find more information on this?      Any information is helpful, thanks in advance. -Hobbs

The world stops outside of a subset of English speaking countries?

Before you got taken over, there used to be a token amounts of competitions that were opened to the whole world, now it's all restricted to "US, CANADA (excluding Quebec), UK and AUSTRALIA" (and somtimes Holland). I'm a Brit. I live in Europe, Do I really have to fake my address at my aunt's place outside of London to be able to enter? Why the about face? Also, a side note, where did the option to edit your own comments go? Unhappily yours, bpfh

Useful tools

Cheap, cordless drills are amazing tools. Take one apart and attach a speed controller, you got a motor for a robot. Also, they have good high torque motors that can be used for all sorts of things. A $50 RC transmitter and a receiver make good remote uses, such as remote detonation. More useful tools are pneumatic cannons. I've used them from pressure testing to damage testing. WHat are your useful, unconventional tools?

Moving to the US? Answered

Hey there.  After I have *hopefully* gone to uni and came out the other side with a degree I am considering moving out to the USA, probably to or at least to somewhere near San Diego. Nothing is set in stone for now so any suggestions on other places would also be helpful. But my main problem is that I have started to grow some plants back in Britain and don't particularly like the thought of just leaving them, so what are the laws on bringing plants with me? I know they are just plants but it's all the time I've put into them and to be honest, they're the first few plants I haven't killed. Any tips or stories of emigrating to the US would be great. As I said, this is just a thought, but I need to know more about how to go about moving there and what happens before I can truly decide. Thanks for your help :) Tom

Moving to the US? Answered

Hey everyone. I'm rather young, but I'm trying to plan myself a future. I've though about being a programmer(I'm VERY good with both software and hardware, better than anyone else I know at my age) but I've decided wasting my entire life sitting in front of a monitor isn't for me. I want something more active, something that won't get be bored. I'm into parkour recently, and I've always loved martial arts and knives. I thought if it's possible for me to develop a military career. I live in Israel but I really hate this place(the law is very tight and sensitive about whatever can cause harm. Knives are illegal to carry, even tear gas and pepper spray draw police attention) so I want to move to the US. My English is very good, but I heard it's hard to get there. Other than that I though about developing a military career at the US army. I might change my mind, but I just wanna know how much of my plan is possible for now. Once I turn 18 I have to serve at the military for 3 years, then once I'm 21 I wanna move to the US. Once I get there I wanna sign up to the army immediately. I'm not even sure I need a house as the army provides all I need, so I can basically live there. I would like to serve at rather high-risk force(snipers, green berets, etc) for as long as I can and then still work for the army at a more passive job, such as engineering, or research and development. I know it might sound weird and stuff, but I really wanna be a soldier. Please tell me if my plan is possible, comment or correct it. Thanks, Mike.

US no longer melting pot, to be politcally correct

I heard today that to be politically correct the United States are no longer considered to be "a melting pot". I don't remember what it is now or where that idea came from though... but its no longer "a melting pot".

Texas Windpower = Big Money

Texas is now far ahead of California, and the rest of the country, in production of wind power. From the NYTimes:Texas, once the oil capital of North America, is rapidly turning into the capital of wind power. After breakneck growth the last three years, Texas has reached the point that more than 3 percent of its electricity, enough to supply power to one million homes, comes from wind turbines.Texans are even turning tapped-out oil fields into wind farms.

US and Canada Contests

I'm fed up I cant enter some contests like the 30-second video contest just because I'm not resident of the US nor Canada. I live in Spain, and when I see a contest I like, it says its only for US and Canada residents. I understand that its easier for Instructables to send the price withing America, but the sending taxes are not so high for them to be a reason of not sending the price. While I was reading the contest rules for the 30-second video I had ideas for 4 different entries. But I'm not going to bother doing them if I'm going to be thrown out of the contest the first day because of my nationality. I think contests should be something international, where everyone could win. That is the spirit of this new era, the internet era. With sites as this one, youtube, facebook, one can really feel as part of the international comunity, where every one, no matter age or race, can be someone. But of course, this "feeling"· of being part of something bigger end by the moment one reads "This contest is limited to legal residents of the United States and Canada, age 18 or older at the time of entry." (I understand the age problem for legal reasons). So, I ask to the team of Instructables to be considerant and to think of all the people living outside the US and Canada that could have a good idea or ideas for any kind of contest. Thanks for all Juanviperea.

Is Google Making Us Stupid?

That's the title of Nicholas Carr's latest article (and the cover story) for the Atlantic. I just finished it and it's an interesting article discussing how Google has been reprogramming our brains. I haven't been able to find a copy online yet, but the gist of it is that since the internet makes things so easy to find, we no longer are able to read deeply and critically; we just skim. I found that interesting. You can check out his blog at roughtype.com.

Best Use of Autotune

By now everyone that listens to music has probably heard (or heard of) autotune. It's been used for years to polish up pitchy vocals. Now it's more recognizable for being used on a totally different level. Autotune is the effect that T-Pain, Hellogoodbye (and by now, way to many others) use. At this point most people agree that it's way over used and just plain annoying. I have a poll to take. What song do you think actually uses it well? What's your vote for the Best Use of Autotune in a song?Mine is Woods, by Bon Iver.
