Win Or Fail?

Here is where you can ask questions like if an accomplishment is a win or fail (This topic is a fail...lol)

Posted by dombeef 9 years ago

Can the same instructable win in different contests?

I was wondering if the same instructable entered in three different (qualifying) contests can win grand prizes in all three or at least two of them? Does it have such a chance? Or would the judges think something like "this one has already won once in another contest so maybe that is enough for that author and we should give a chance to someone else" ? Will you have fewer chances to win if this very same tutorial has just won in another contest?

Doctorow Novel Comes True?

In "For the Win", Cory Doctorow wrote about an exploitative on-line world where third-world sweatshops ran through online games to earn treasures to sell to Western gamers.  These people were known as "gold farmers". Guess what? Up to 100,000 people in China and Vietnam are playing online games to gather gold and other items for sale to Western players, a report suggests. The global market for such virtual game goods is worth at least $3bn (£1.8bn) the World Bank study estimates. About 75% of that comes from so-called "gold farmers" who stockpile game currencies to sell on later. However, Encouraging these in-game services could aid development in many poorer countries, said the report. The high proportion of money from such sales that reaches those in the country where the work was done [23% to the individual] might mean that it could aid development in many nations, said the report which was co-commissioned by the World Bank and development organisation InfoDev. Crack the Code 2.0 (Another Patch Winning Opportunity!)

For this code, the rules are the same, but the setup is different. The letters are not mixed up, so if you get the word (for example) "Blue" it's "Blue", not "luBe". The words are still mixed up, but are on the correct line, so if the first line reads "Sky Blue The" and the second line reads "Cat Hat In The" it would be "The Blue Sky," and "Cat in the Hat." Oh, and I may, or may not have mixed up the alphabet. Oops ;-) From your's Truly, Rock Soldier

K'nex Challenge 1: 13th Aug - 4th Sept - RESULTS ANNOUNCED

As likers of knex and engineering, Gmjhowe, =SMART= and myself decided we'd start a little knex competition. Each month we will pick three items that we'd like to see redesigned in knex and invite you to have a crack at remaking them, with added functionality if you can!To start with the prizes will be patches, designed by gmjhowe and awarded by him, =SMART= and myself. If it takes off, who knows there may be better prizes in months to come. The patches that will be awarded for 1st - 5th place are below. Here are this months challenges, we've included a smaller project for those of you with less pieces available.Monitor Stand: A stand to replace the base of a monitor. It should be able to twist from left to right, tilt the screen up and down and allow the user to turn from portrait to landscape. Adjustable height would be a bonus!Knex Chess Set: An 8 x 8 chess board with knex pieces.Sellotape Holder: A Knex sellotape holder, for you knexers with less pieces. It should hold the reel and allow the user to pull and cut sellotape one handed. (some suggestions to expand this option: make a large reel tape holder for bigger sellotape rolls, make a wider one for parcel or duct tape, make an adjustable width holder for different tapes, make a hand held tape gun like those they use for packaging - link.)Dock: Somwhere to dock any kind of gadget from phones and ipods, to laptops and external harddrives. It can dock one kind, or all if you're a genius. If this becomes popular and we get a few of each of the above designs submitted, we might add some more challenges to this competition. Rules:- To enter, write up a full instructable of your construction process with clear pictures and descriptions. Art Contest: Win an Instructables Book!

We need art for a book and since we think that the Instructables community has plenty of talent and ideas we thought that this is the perfect opportunity for a contest. The theme of the contest is Fail Gracefully. Read on more more details.Eric Wilhelm, our glorious CEO of infinite repute, has been invited to go and talk at OFFF in Portugal in May. As an invited speaker he also gets to supply some art for the event catalog. The theme is Fail Gracefully and the idea is to embrace mistakes in your efforts. Here's their own description:"THIS ISN'T FLYING. THIS IS FALLING WITH STYLE" Be afraid of perfection. Dare to do wrong. Make mistakes. Enjoy 404. Reject everything you know and jump. Try to fly. There is no such thing as failure, but experience. No mistakes, but mistaken views. Errors? We call them acieeed(sp). So the last sentence is a bit confusing, but you get the idea. We're giving away a copy of The Best of Instructables, Volume 1 for the best piece of art and the possibility of being published in the catalog. How to enter - To enter your art, just attach it to a comment in this forum post. - The art needs to be printable so make sure that you have a copy that is high-res. - By high-res we mean 300 dpi - The attachment can be low-res - Enter by March 12th, 2009

Review Quality of Instructables

Looking for some feedback on quality of my Instructables.  What key element(s) am I missing to win those awesome grand prizes? https://www.instructables.com/member/DiyWaterDog/instructables/ Of my 51 projects I think 49 have been featured. I have more than my share of robot T-shirts. :-)  What do I need to improve to impress site visitors and judges enough to get more votes and views? Yes, I have been through the Instructables class...  With 49 featured, I must be doing something right.  What do I need to improve?   Please don't look at this as being greedy, but would really love one of these grand prizes one of these days.   I'm sure any comments would benefit all authors. Thanks in advance and Keep Making! Love this site and community! DIYWATERDOG.

Wrong Prize

I recently won the monthly audio challenge.  I received the message showing the correct prize of a 3D camera pack.  However, when I click on the link to accept my prize and enter my shipping information, the second place prize, a blu-ray player set, shows up instead of the 3D camera prize. I am not sure where to go to get this rectified.  I don't want to click accept and get the wrong prize.  Any help with where I should go would be helpful.  I replied to the message, but it was sent by the Instructables robot and I have not heard anything.

K'nex Challenge 2: 18th Sept - 11th Oct - FLIGHT

After the success of the last contest, Gmjhowe, =SMART= and myself decided we'd go for it and launch a second contest. The first we really enjoyed and saw some awesome entries. This time we've decided to make the guidelines a wee bit looser so you can use your imagination more. We'll be setting a category for you to design and build within and then provide you with some example ideas to get you started. And this category is....FLIGHTAnything plane, helicopter, glider, flight related is allowed. Please read the rules carefully.Rules:Your entry must do something. It can't just be a model of a plane or a helicopter. We want them to move or glide or have spinning parts or be functional for something else around the house but be aircraft themed.Entries must be over 50% knex. The remaining can be paper, glue, card, tissue paper.... anything! To enter, write up a full instructable of your construction process with clear pictures and descriptions. Post the link here. Please steer clear of guns. That's not what this is about.Starting and closing dates are GMT.What the judges say goes!Have fun!Judging - 12th Sept - 18th SeptSuggestions:A propellor. Small and compact, if you design a good one you might get extra kudos if your design's then used in loads of other entries.A ceiling plane. With a plastic propeller on the front and the top attached to a string to the ceiling, this plane will fly itself around in circles on a string.Paper plane launcher. Probably the closest you'll get to a gun.A vertical launch rocket. Rocket being a rocket model not a meagre collection of rods. While knex by itself might not be light enough to fly.... perhaps you could run some string through the middle to make it appear to glide.... Mum's washing line might be of great help.Prizes:There will be patches for prizes. Gmjhowe will be uploading them soon.

Should I make an Instructable for this?

Haha, I was already going to make it. I'm just super excited about it so I wanted to share a sneak peek with y'all. I made it out of PVC and metallic paint, mostly, then the usual Steampunk bits and pieces. Then I decided it needed to be lit up with LEDs for special effect! Then I decided it needed a laser sight! Win.

Can an instructable win in multiple contests?

Lets say I have an instructable in 3 contests. Lets assume is a good one. Can I win in all 3 or after winning in one, you are not allowed to win in the other two?

does winning a contest decrease chances of winning other contests?

Hello, I didn't see this in the FAQ.  I know you're allowed to enter up to 3 contests.  Sometimes the contest end dates are quite far apart.  Does winning one contest effect your likelihood of winning a later contest?  Just wondering if Instructables tries to spread out the contest winnings.  If so, it might change the author's decision on whether to enter some contests where their project doesn't fit as well and have lesser chance of winning. Thanks!

win 7 install on new hard drive with no installation DVD

I have a new hard drive for my laptop and need to install win 7 on it, as was previously installed on the old one. Being an OEM machine, it did not come with an installation disk so I either have to try and extract it from the old hard drive, or get a pirated copy. Is it possible to simply mirror the drive onto the new one, or will it require a DVD installation? I have the facilities to copy the drive while it is still in the laptop. Can the activation key from the genuine pre-installed windows be used with a pirated copy to make it work without any of the "windows genuine notifications"

That's the name of my proposal. If I win I'm making the laser cutter available to all laser cutter members for free. They will mail whatever they want cut/etched and pay for shipping both ways. What would be your proposal? If it were still required?

Entry Moderating Time

How long does it take for them to decide wether my contest entry should be accepted or not? I submitted entry "A" to contest "A", and I submitted entry "B" to contests "B", "C", and "D" only an hour after entry "A". Entry "A" got accepted into contest "A" in 17 hours, entry "B" got rejected from contest "B" in 20 hours, and it's been over 2 days and I have not heard anything about contests "C" or "D".  How long will this process take?

Reduced or Increased odds of winning if entering multiple contests?

If I enter three contests and become a finalist or win one of them, does that in any way negatively affect my chances of becoming a finalist or winning in the other day?  Do the "powers that be" decide that since I did well in another, they want to give someone else a chance? Thanks!
