Adverts

I appreciate that you need adverts but the stupid beeping one is waaaay too much. If you think this is going to get you members you are soooo wrong. If there's any like that next time I shall not be back.

Malware Advert?

I was browsing I'bles today, when i happened across this 'advert'. I had just clicked on my 'you' link at the top of the page, and had moved my cursor down to click on 'discussions'. Im guessing the header advert had a roll over link, that recognizes moving your cursor over the advert as a 'click'. You can see the details of the 'advert'. I did not click any of the links, i just clicked the reload button to get back to my 'you' page.

Ipad screen 'greying out'?

When reading an instructables article on my ipad after 2 to 3 minutes the screen greys out and I get unwanted adverts/links which I can cancel with the X at the top after 2 cancellations the X no longer appears and I have to go out and then restart the article. Any ideas?

Pro Membership - NO ADVERTS ???

Am I right in assuming that a Pro Membership should mean I see no adverts when visiting Instructables ?? If not why NOT ?? Paying for Pro should entitle any user to not be hassled by lowbrow spam put on the website :(

What's with all the Norton adverts?

I understand the need to advertise... but why the full front page spread advertising probably the worst bit of security software out there?!

WRONG WRONG WRONG adverts

Ok, now, is it just me, or has the 'standard' of adverts gone down on this site? I don't mind the adverts that relate to the page topic, sometimes there useful, i can even cope with the spinning flashing gifs. But, this NSFW advert, is not good. Its not fun when checking out ibles at work, to get this thrown up on your screen. Also, its not much of a 'family' site with naked people. I am aware that -ibles remains free because of the adverts, and id rather put up with nsfw adverts than loose it alltogether, but is there not a way of 'choosing' the adverts a bit more selectivley?

Non-appropriate google adverts

Searching for "boob" or other such words in the search bar makes/has google display porn adverts. This may block instructables due to cross-linking to porn sites. Why searching for boob? To make them of course! (Squishy Breast Stress Relief Toy). Which is borderline appropriate in some school/library networks - but linking to porn isn't. Can we filter these ad's out?

App messing up and Adverts

It's been a while since I used this app. The number 1 reason is because the app messes up a lot and there have been no attempts to fix it. For some reason they decideded to make it so you have to sign in every time you use the app even if it was just 10 min ago. The problem is that you can't sign in from your app. It switches to the web browser to sign in and when you click facebook or sign in half the time it doesn't switch back to the app and the other half it just doesn't sign in. I started using the app again and here it is 2 years later and they still have not fixed the problem. Now I notice that it has advertisements in the middle of people's posts thanks for eating up my data. If these problems are not fixed I won't be using this again

New music-playing website.

I just came across a website called Spotify. It's a pretty simple idea - they have oodles of music (check the list of labels signed up!) that you can search and play in any order, for free. All you have to put up is a 30-second advert break every 20 minutes (instead of every 12-14 minutes on commercial radio). If you don't want to put up with the adverts, you can pay for an advert-free day (99p) or month (9.99).I've only been using it for a hour or so, but I'm having fun listening to a mixed bag of Duffy and Jehtro Tull tracks.

Report popups, annoying/inappropriate adverts here

I just had a persistent popup (the sort that follow the screen as you scroll up and down) from sustain lane, asking me to take a survey for safecount.net/questionmarket.com. The advert also appeared in the sidebar (the text "Take a survey" on a magenta background). If there's a duplicate of this thread somewhere else, I couldn't find it (apart from gmjhowe's thread about the nudity ones). If not, might I suggest a sticky with a title like the above to provide one place for people to report adverts?

AdblockPlus help- selective whitelisting?

I have a request that might sound a little strange. Does anyone know if it is possible (and if so, how) to set a blacklist within a whitelist on ABP? Context- I have whitelisted Instructables on adblock because the ad impressions I get help fund the site, but those bouncing flashing multi-coloured seizure inducing "You are the 999,999th visitor congratulations you WON!" adverts drive me to the brink of insanity. Can I, say, whitelist "all adverts on Instructables except GIFs"? Or have a blocking filter for "www.instructables.com/*.gif" that takes precedence over the whitelist?

Advertising Instructables

Next week is my school's annual "Activities Week". On Tuesday, I'll be taking thirty kids paint-balling, but for the rest of the week I'll be making my Paper Catapult with my groups, and using Heed as a target (they're going to try and knock his head off).Because the kids keep asking me where I get my stuff from, I will be displaying adverts for this site all week (I usually have one stuck in the window of my lab door, but this one will be copied up to A3 and stuck on the wall over the instructions display).I thought you'd like it, maybe to put up a version at work, in your neighbourhood or at school. It's only a Word document, but it does the trick.

instructables site idea to make more money!!!

How instructables staff could make more money to run the siet is to make an option for members to turn the adverts on or off. if this option was here then i would turn them on inso instructables will last longer and get better sooner.

Top banner ad broken

The banner advert (I would assume it's meant to be a Craftsman one, it's where I saw the most of those animated craftsman tool ads) directly below the instructables masthead is sporadically broken for me, replaced with a bunch of gibberish of the form "BZh91AY&SYEHk5߀pc07L>0 5". I can upload a screenshot if you want, but essentially imagine a few lines of that directly below the home-explore-community-submit links and the search box.

Contest pages - a suggestion

The new format for contests is growing on me, especially the separate voting function - it is now possible to show your appreciation for a competitor without damaging your own scores. However - I think it would be better if we could see the scores when we use the "sort by" options. OK, such-and-such is in the lead, but by how much? One vote? Or one hundred? One view? Or one thousand?I miss the edge-of-the-seat tension you get when you're just outside the winning range - how many views do I need to scrounge? Can I badger a vote out of somebody?Anyway, just my thoughts. Please click on this less-than-subtle advert

Sad

It's really sad that instrutables is beginning to let advertisers "sneak" onto their site. It was such a beautiful idea to begin with and now I see more and more advertisements labeled as instructables.  PLEASE go back to everyday people sharing useful instructions instead of Charlatans spreading their own self-aggrandizing products.  Instructables, you WILL begin to lose your fan base unless something changes. I've seen it to many times in the past. Sites that start out with good intentions but eventually succumb to the almighty dollar. I know bandwidth isn't cheap and We don't mind the adverts on the edges but, PLEASE watch out for shameless self promoters. Watching With High Hopes, Me

Scoreboard popover survey is obnoxious

Title says it all:  I am a proud pro member of ibles because I want to support the community, and I genuinely hate obtrusive ads.  I can understand that ibles wants site feedback, but popovers (flash or javascript animated boxes that pop into a webpage over its content) are just annoying when the same could be accomplished with an inline tasteful banner. Whenever I'm just surfing/stumbling a site, I INSTANTLY move on to greener pastures when these obnoxious intrusions pop over the content, regardless of what they ask or tell:  confirm your age, would you like to participate in a survey, subscribe to our newsletter, etc...  I don't know about others, but popups are the downfall of a quality content site.

Why do you have those crappy ads on the right side bar?

This stuff is pure crap. I got ripped off by one of them.  "Sun City Mom discovers shocking method for erasing wrinkles. Dermatologists hate her... " The funny thing is that Sun City AZ where I live is a senior community. This kind of adverts make you look bad and only add to the bad rap that the internet has. Clean up your site. I do love the rest of the work you have done on it. "Bad with the good" you may say but this stuff is at the other end of the spectrum from what you are trying to do with your site. lol Michael Townsend

Gasoline-powered, but no wheels...

I heard about them, but I thought they were a joke. Then I ran across a link. They actually made gasoline-powered pogo-sticks that even grandpa can ride! It's a single-cylinder engine, with the bouncing foot being connected directly to the piston, called the Hop Rod. There are a bunch of adverts and slightly more modern test-drives in a short video on the site.They're... odd.Still, I wondered. Maybe the Hop Rod provided the inspiration for other wheel-less powered transports?Do you remember those Russian boots? 4 metre strides and speeds of 40kph were promised, but that was 8 years ago. According to The New York Times they fell foul of Soviet secrecy and then Russian financial mis-management.They're still around, waiting for some entrepreneur to hop on the band-wagon...

Free Wifi for Chromebook

Hello- I'm new to your site. I do have  questions that I believe many of you smart folks can answer. I have an Acer CB5-311 Chromebook which, against all expectations, I dearly love. One thing I don't love is the games certain wifi companies like to play in re to access. For example, my apt. complex has free wifi access. Periodically, the wifi goes "down" just after an unsolicited advert pops up (despite  adblocker) asking if I had interrupted service, and wouldn't I rather buy a service contract with x.....(fill-in the blanks) for such and such price. Of course, it is the same wifi our apt. complex purchased (under a different name). So...is there a hack you know of that can help me circumvent this?

When is spam not spam?

This morning when I opened Instructables to the Workshop page I found that out of the 30 'ibles displayed in "Recent" no less than FIFTEEN of them were from Popular Mechanics; now popular mechanics is a really good magazine in fact I used to buy it regularly but no matter how good it may be it isn't a person it's a business & everyone of the "'ibles" contains links to it's web site. While all the articles which have been taken from the pages of the magazine & published as 'ibles are well written & informative they are also a blatant advert for both the site & the magazine & as such in my eyes at least are spam, I know that there have been a few 'ibles published by Pop Mech in the past but I really feel that fifteen or more all at once is extracting the urine just a bit when it comes to copping for a bit of free advertising. Any constructive comments folks?

Keep getting logged out when I select the "Workshop" "Recent" tab in Firefox 11.0

I have found in the last few days that I am being logged out when I try to go from Editors Picks or any other tab to Recent in the Workshop category. If I change categories to say Technology select Recent then move back to Workshop it keeps me logged in but when I move from Recent into another tab then return to recent I am logged out again. I have tried logging back in & then selecting Recnt but it simply logs me out again & I am looking a page full of of adverts. I am running Windows XP Home SP3 & Firefox 11.0, it works fine in Internet Explorer so I assume it is a Firefox issue. Is anyone else having a similar problem?

Annoyed a lots by Pro Membership renewal

OK, so I was a PRO member for 24 months and during that time my little projects got over 30K views... maybe that is nothing, maybe it something... due to the nature of the material I write about, I personally think it is a lots. However, surely 30K eyes viewing the articles and the adverts posted all about the pages generate some ad revenue for Instructables.  To think that I'm going to pay again for a renewal ... well, folks, it will NOT happen.  Instructables give away PRO memberships for all manner of things, from new groups to 90 days for a Featured Author. I am seriously thinking about dumping this whole Instructables thing... It is my opinion that as long as an author is active and publishing regularly and generating reasonable interest, then the PRO tools should be available to her.  I did not mind paying my way into the PRO club the first time, but renewal is simply not going to happen at my expense.  If I dump Instructables, I will unpublish everything. Your move Instructables... you are a neat way to share information, but I really do not need you.  I can just hop over to Arduino.cc and forum myself to death... I'm there often anyway. Magnets, Magnetism, Field lines ???? An expert is needed for green wind power.

This is best placed in the green group as it is for the production of green electricity, but I think that it would not be out of place in the science section also. I have an idea, quite probably not an original one but an idea all the same. It came about as we go camping as a family and have been off the grid a few times. Basically we have had no way of charging our electronic devices for longish periods. Solar power I hear you cry, well that is all well and good if you live in a country that has good sunlight, but here in the UK it can be unpredictable and not produce enough charge to power modern devices. I am mucking about with dynamo’s on the bikes (pedal ones) and wind up devices. Something I am looking into is things like wind power or improved dynamo power. The basic principal behind all of these forms of power production is that of passing a conductor through a magnetic field to produce a potential difference on that conductor. Simples (reference to meerkat advert http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBu0OtC6m9g). It has been a very long time since I have done anything like this (way back in school all those years ago) so please stick with me on this one. If I remember right the principal theory is that 1. The higher number of conductors (or loops in the coil) that passes through the field lines causes the voltage to be higher. 2. The stronger the magnetic flux the higher the current production within the conductors. This is a bit basic to some of you I am sure but I still need to get it out to confirm my thoughts. If this is wrong please correct me, as the title says, an expert is needed lol The bar magnet field lines project from the N end and loop back to the S end in this fashion Image 1 Putting two bar magnets together with N and S facing gives a field pattern like this Image 2 Now this is where I need the most help with. Toroidal magnets produce a different field pattern, and as far as I can make out from the internet it looks like this Image 3 & 4 What I want to know is what happens when you put two toroidal magnets on top of each other, what happens to the field lines then. I have thought that there are a few possibilities on this, the first is that the circular lines will extend to encompass both magnets creating like an hour glass formation in the cross section. The second is that field lines will combine/intermingle between the magnets and create a figure 8 pattern. In either of the two possibilities the field strength will be increased to what could be considered a focal point between the two magnets. So with the technical thoughts out of the way and progressing on the assumption that I am correct so far my thought of a high powered dynamo is this. A central shaft that is spun by wind or other means, attached to this shaft are disks like platters on a hard drive, attached to those platters are the toroidal magnets. The magnets are aligned and spaced to give maximum condensing of the field lines between the upper and lower platter. In the centre of the two (or more) platters is a fixed platter, not attached to the shaft and is stationary. On this stationary platter are the coils, fixed into position. Image 5 The coils are shaped and could be something like the voice coils out of a hard drive, which would be good as they would determine the size of the platters, being key stone shaped they will fit together to make a ring of coils. Image 6 The whole idea is based upon the maximising and focusing of the field lines from the magnets to a point producing the maximum amount of energy as the coils pass through the lines. I also think that due to the shaft being turned having little resistance or weight that even small amounts of wind energy would be able to turn it to produce the desired outcome. Now this is where I ask you all to comment and take my thoughts to bits where I have assumed things that are wrong. I have no problems being told where I am wrong as long as it is not in a nasty way. Cheers all

New Homepage

I know the staff, and some members, are tired of hearing criticism of the recent changes the site has undergone. Some is probably valid, most is just knee jerk. I don't want to pile on, more than I already have, but after seeing the homepage today I have to say something. I've attached a screen shot of the current home page full screened on a 23" monitor. Lets say I'm visiting Instructables for the first time. Is a giant, scaling, Radio Shack advert really the only thing you want to show up? (Since the ad scales with the window yo would need a huge screen to be able to see anything else on landing, also if you aren't full screen it is literally all you see besides the header.) Sure there are a links to the categories but what if I'm new and don't know those are the categories or what they mean. What if I'm a regular but don't know what category the thing I'm looking for is in? Search you say, just use the search bar. Right, ok, just as soon as I find it. Oh you mean this giant thing in the middle of my screen that typed out like it's a non-usable flash animation when I first landed? What if I don't know what I'm looking for, lets call it browsing. Looks like there are some featured projects down below. *scrolls down* One project with a picture large enough to discern it's subject, three with shrunken down thumbnails, and 8 more in a wall of text with no pictures to give any context to the titles. This home screen is no longer a hub for the site. It's 50% add, 25% blank space, and 25% links to specific things. With the giant ad filling the entire screen the stuff below feels like it is tacked on as an afterthought. It really feels like it was designed around the ad. You have to know what you are looking for for it to even be remotely useful. Over 3/4 of the time if I'm am looking at a project on Instructables I found it by browsing ALL the categories, at once, on the old homepage. Unless I'm looking for something specific I'm not going to spend the time to click through every catagory just to see what's up. I have broad interests and jumping to 6 different pages just isn't going to cut it. It also makes it feel very disjointed. You go from a page with almost no content to a page filtered down to 1/6th of the sites content, at most. This isn't just bad for people browsing either, this will directly impact authors as well. With only one decent sized picture and only 4 pictures total what are the chances your project is going to make the front page? Average case I would assume people might click through half of the six categories in the current format. Right there that's a probable 50% drop in eyes even seeing your project, click through rates will decrease that number further but those could actually rise (as a percentage of the total people that see the project. This doesn't cancel out the first decrease though). A 66% decrease is also plausible and of course roughly 83% is worst case. If the browser doesn't win and the author doesn't win then who wins? Unless Radio Shack has paid for all the space on the top of the home screen, in which case the Autodesk balance sheet wins, nobody does. It causes me some concern that the reasoning given for the major format changes to the Instructables themselves was to really emphasize the pictures, and I believe the same ting was said about the previous homepage update, but now pictures of projects have almost entirely been removed. The motivation here is fuzzy at best. I would love to hear from someone on that staff that knows the actual reason behind the change. If it makes sense I'm willing to listen and adapt my usage habits but if this is simply a numbers game in the ledger book then this probably signals the end of me browsing other peoples projects. (Unless a staff member will actually come out and say it's a money grab in which case I appreciate the honesty and maybe we can all work together to find a way to generate more income. The last thing we want is Instructables to go under.) EDIT: Interestingly it's not as bad in IE8 (The ad that is. The lack of projects is still quite apparent) but there is a little issue with the scaling of the "search bar". Maybe the ad size is a bug, as there is at least one other FF bug already spotted, see below. Also the image comment system seems to have reverted to the old style click and drag, at least here in the forum. Maybe it nerev changed, I don't post photos here much.
