Which Projects should I instructablize?

Complete, yet undocumented: 1 Hero Steam Engine 2 Ice Bullet 3 Heated side mirrors (truck) 4 Camera launched from cannon 5 Easy ways to connect batteries without the "proper" battery case. 6 Disconnect anti-lock brake circuit when they start acting like it's icy even on dry pavement. 7 Bicycle turns a car alternator, generates power. 8 Firestarting reflector from space-blanket. 9 Modify an off-the-shelf night light which is designed to light when A) smoke alarm beeps  B) It's dark. I only wanted light when smoke alarm goes off. 10 Home-made rocket engine. 11 Augment gasoline with propane when auto fuel pump is crapping out. 12 Adapt lawnmower to cut very tall grass 13 Non slip surface for ramp. 14 Apple picker.                     Some of these I still have around. Some, not.  Yet I might be able to dig up pics, or do line drawings + writeup.  I numbered em to make it easy to reference items.

Fabricating advice (Knuckle dusters)

I want to create some knuckle dusters, heavy duty ones that could pack a punch (I will not be hurting anyone, just for fun and martial arts self-defence :-P). However I have almost no metalworking tools such as a welder, drill press, bandsaw (or other electric saw that cuts metal). The tools I do have are: Mitre saw Normal drill (Variable speed) Hacksaws Scroll/fret saw Table saws Sanders, planers, circular saws. Heavy duty desk vices Any tips would be greatly appreciated. They dont need to look amazing, I like 'rustic' weapons (Like 'improvised' weapons).

Need component advice/help for a instructable

I wanted to build this instructable, but it requires STM32F051 micro controller. However there's different types of 'STM32F051' micro controllers such as a T8, K8, C8, R8, V8, K6 C6, R6, etc. So does it matter which kind variant i use or will they all work the same? If it does matter, what kind do i use? Or is there an alternate micro controller that will work? Source Instructable : https://www.instructables.com/id/Market-Minder/

Newbie here

Just wanted to introduce myself to the community and say hello!!    HELLO!!! I'm still learning my way around here in my spare time which is sparse. I have to say that in the spare time I do have, I have seen some really awesome folks out there with really awesome talents. You guys rock! I hope to one day have that special instructable that blows everyone away but until then I will settle for my simple fun and cheap ones. If anyone has any advice, I am more than open for suggestions regarding the way i format my instructions. I would appreciate any constructive criticism in that dept. :-) I try to write them like I'm writing to a 12 yr old girl just starting to craft on her own. I hope it comes across as such and not like I think everyone is stupid... hehe   Anyway thanks a bunch guys and gals for the creative stimulation and I hope to be a sufficient contributor.

Need Some Advice

Hello everyone, Figured i'd introduce myself in the form of a whiny, nooby topic. Guys, I have to say, I came to this site out of boredom, but having looked over some of the stuff you guys make, some of it is beautiful. I'm only 18, and i've grown up in a very fast-paced modern world.  I have no idea where to even start when it comes to things like this, my expertise is in computers, and Facebook, which blows. I saw some of Steampunkworkshop's work, and I would love to have a go at making a few little things for myself, but I have no idea on what I would need to buy. My level of knowledge in this field is zero, I have a soldering iron, and a VERY basic set of tools (hammers, screwdrivers etc.) If someone could link me to some useful posts, or if someone could drop a few bits of advice for me, in fact, if the mood took you, i'd be quite happy to have some of you guys as a mentor. Anyway, let me know what you think, it's all much appreciated. Glad to be a part of the community, hopefully i'll be getting to know a few of you. Thanks, Lewis

Making a 3D DNA model

Hi, I was thinking about trying to make one of those 3D DNA models you see in schools, showing all the atoms in the molecules joined together and climbing up in that beautiful double helix shape.Trouble is, I don't have the money to spend on one of those several-hundred-dollar kits, and I can't figure out exactly how a single nucleotide should look, let alone how to make several dozen nucleotides and joining them all together.I've searched google without much success, so any pointers/helpful guide images would be very much appreciated. Thanks

I feel so overwhelmed

I've just returned to making stuff. A former tinkerer turned university student and I can't even make an electric project cause i'm worried i'll be a disgrace as an engineer. I tried fixing my tablet but ended up frying the PCB. Now i'm afraid i'm gonna blow something up. I'm also worried that what I make is something someone else made. So copyrights and what not. How did people deal with this fear?  I also feel like I have no initiative i.e. not doing something the easier way and end up looking like a fool. Or do I just look into people's perception of me too much?

Making The Most Of Your Time Here

If you're reading this, you're hopefully about to become an AiR in the best workshop on earth. Congratulations! This is an amazing opportunity, and i'd like to share my experiences so that you can hopefully glean some wisdom. When I got here, I was quickly humbled. For the first time in my life, I was intimidated. I had never been in such a vast playground and wealth of resources. I put myself under a lot of pressure. I started with some smaller projects that ended up taking a lot longer than anticipated. I did everything the hard way. During this time I formed a great relationship with shop staff, and gained a deep respect for them. A month will go by and you will look back and wonder where it all went. There are a million distractions, and it's a tough game to balance them all. In my last two months, I decided I needed to pick a problem to solve. I bit off more than I could chew, and I chewed it. I did something a bit unconventional, and did a project on sustainability. I was in over my head, and I brought in a friend for help. And i'm really glad I did. Don't constrain yourself to being an 'artist'. You are about to immerse yourself deep in the heart of the maker movement. Make things that you will be proud of, that you can do nowhere else.  This is an nearly infinite opportunity, with the only limiting factor being time. You are skilled enough, have the aptitude, and can do absolutely anything. So what on earth do you make?  Quick Tips: -Pick a problem, and solve it.  Pick a problem that's bigger than one person.  -Don't shackle additional commitments during this time. (I burnt out from a big side project) Devote yourself to the shop. -Reach out to someone at Autodesk, and see if you can get mentorship, or use your art to inform things that they are interested in. Form a relationship with them. You will find wisdom and friendship. -Find a peer, and check in regularly about the scope of your work.  -Pick someone to collaborate on a big project with. Make someone else's dream come true.  -Space out your classes. Don't do it all at once, or you'll forget what that critical button on the DMS is.  Time Breakdown: 33% of your time goes towards collaboration 33% towards learning new stuff that's way above your comfort level 33% for the stuff you can do with your eyes closed

Jewelry Design App Ideas?

Our group at Autodesk is thinking about making an app to help people design custom jewelry, since the current options are slow, expensive, and hard to use.  If you've made your own jewelry or worked with a pro to have a custom piece made, our summer intern Kristen would love to pick your brain for 15-30 minutes to learn what features would be most useful to you in a jewelry app. If that sounds like fun, just reply here and Kristen will contact you to set up a phone or Skype chat.  Thanks!

What Should I Do With This?

Hi Folks!I would like to propose a new topic, please let me know if it's already hiding somewhere on the site and I've missed it. This might require a whole section to handle all of the possible separate threads, not sure...It's called "What Should I Do With This?"...I have several weird items in my possession that I KNOW have greatness lurking within them, but I'm at a loss about how best to unlock their potential. I'm sure lots of other folks are in the same boat. So here's the idea:We post a photo and/or description of the item, and ask what to do with it. Readers can offer suggestions (hopefully something besides "give it to me!"), advice, etc. Then when/if the advice is taken, we make an instructable, or at least reply to the thread with the results. For example (I'll post pix if I can), I have an ancient external, ~5 lb serial-port CD player in a serious metal housing about a foot long with a power supply built in. What's especially nice is the huge sticker along the side of the silly beast that says "PORTABLE" in huge block letters. It's crying out to be the platform for some device, just not sure what.Another item is a big Fostex 1/2" 8-track reel-to reel with a bad (and I'm told, prohibitively expensive to replace) tape head. So it's got a smooth, quiet & powerful motor (or two), eight analog meters, lots of RCA in & out ports, plus switches, leds, and pulleys for aligning and running the tape. I'm thinking a belt drive for a Van De Graaf, maybe some random dancing needle meters for various projects...See what I mean? I'm sure somebody has some ideas for the bits and pieces I haven't even mentioned, or a better way to re-purpose the entire apparatus without reducing it to it's components.Maybe if somebody was looking for input and got a suggestion that they thought was amazing but outside the realm of possibility for them, they could offer to send the item to the person who made the suggestion (if the recipient paid shipping, of course). But for the most part, I think sharing ideas would be most valuable. What do you think? And, perhaps even more importantly, what should I do with the stuff described above? Thanks!!Mike

Upcycling speakers

Hi all! I came across an old aluminium briefcase (the kind you'd transport a million dollars in if you were a spy), and I was thinking of converting it into a battery-powered multimedia platform. Details aside, the first milestone would be to make it into a glorified bluetooth speaker. Now both as concerns for the environment and my own wallet, I plan on reclaiming components when I feasibly can. Bookshelf speakers (with no amp) tend to go for really cheap in second-hand stores where I am, so that's my starting point. The plan is to open up a pair of speakers and attach them to the case somehow, with a wired power source and eBay amplifier circuit to begin with.So my question is, what's it like re-using bookshelf speakers? I know there's a lot of projects online converting them to battery power, but what if I open them up and take out the actual speaker inside? Are there any issues, or much loss of sound quality when the wooden case is discarded? I'm no audiophile here, even a fuzzy sound is okay as long as it has a bit of bass to it. If I use it a lot and I really have the chance, I'll buy a proper pair of speakers to replace the older ones (and maybe consider proper audio engineering where I route frequency ranges to different woofers etc). But that's not happening right now!If anyone has experience with this kind of project, any advice is appreciated :)And if anyone's curious, I was planning on bolting the speakers directly onto the front of the case (which is solid plastic), allowing it to be used closed or open. Then add Bluetooth support and eventually a Raspberry Pi with a HiFiBerry card, then with cool mini MIDI controllers the sky's the limit.

Do you have any advice for fellow makers?

I needed to have one last catch all question, just in case I forgot to ask anything important (which I'm sure there's plenty of). You've seen my four previous questions, and I've loved the comments, but what haven't I asked that I should have, and what topics did I forget to cover, and what would your advice be on those, or just in general to other makers? Thank you all for putting up with me while I posted these. I really enjoy having conversations about how other people have dealt with these issues and others like them. If I ever decide to do something like this again, hopefully I'll see you back here in the forums to chat about more topics. Watch on YouTube More info can be found on my blog.

Posters offer good advice for creative minds

Inspirational posters typically show some natural wonder or athlete along with some inane puffery underneath it. You know the type. "TEAMWORK: Together we kick the losers down!" and other nonsense. So it's nice to see what art students do when they make posters to inspire the first-years. At University College Falmouth, each first-year gets a free poster designed by a graduate. Some are brilliant and some are just good for a brief giggle, but with dozens to look at something should grab you.Non-students can buy posters for five pounds each. poster listvia Core77

Words of Advice from Chuck Close: "Just Get to Work!"

"Inspiration is for amateurs. I just get to work." - Chuck CloseChuck Close paints incredible portraits of himself and others with his unique style even though he holds the brush between his teeth due to being a quadriplegic. He is awesome and his paintings are beautiful in person. In a recent interview with Terry Gross, Chuck gives some great advice for anyone who can't think of what to do. Don't wait for inspiration, just get into the habit of making and ride it. After all, Chuck does well with this and here's how he describes himself:I'm a nervous wreck. I'm a slob. I have no patience. And I'm rather lazy. All those things would seem to guarantee that I would not make work like I make. But I didn't want to just go with my nature.More great stuff here.via Drawn!

Wood working help?

To make this question as short as possible, I'll get straight to the point. I am making a replica of a weapon from a game from wood, however the blade is quite large. Its a kind of battleaxe (see picture below) however I'm having a hard time finding a way to get quite a big piece of wood to slope to a point like a blade would. So basically I want to make a large piece of wood into a long wedge shape but I cant figure out how to do it. As you can see in the picture, using the hand on the handle for size reference, it is quite a large blade. The tools I have in my workshop are: A table saw, a band saw, a scroll saw, mitre saw, drills, handsaws, and chisels. (these are the only tools I think would come in handy, I do not have any tools such as a belt sander, though I do have an orbital sander if that helps) Any help it appreciated! Thanks.

How do I go about persuading this girl I work with to go out with me?

This normally wouldn't be a problem for me but the downfall of the situation is that she is 27 and I'm 20 years old. She has an amazing personality similar to mine, has the same taste in music as I do, and she has this amazing ability to understand my sense of humor. She even said to me "its a shame you're so young, you could've had a "maybe baby"" after we were done discussing our music taste. The thing is, she is very silly at times. Now what I mean by that is that she is goofy and very free-spirited when she works and converses with others. Which to me is the icing on the cake because it means I don't have to feel uptight and act like a tightwad when I'm around her. She has these amazing eyes that I stare into every time I speak with her which deter my focus away from her astonishing body which would be something I focus on with any other girl. Long story short, believe she likes me for me but I just don't know how to conquer the idea of the age difference in her head. Any help would be greatly beneficial and appreciated.

Need Advice: Push a Button Get an Alert on Mobile Phone

Hi all, I'm attempting something "techy" for the first time and need a bit of help getting started, or deciding if this is possible. I'm trying to create something that will send an alert to a mobile phone if a button on another device is pushed. I'm fairly confident this is possible, but not sure what technology I could use to achieve this. I bought an Amazon Dash button to play with but not sure if that makes sense.  A rough idea of what I'm trying to achieve: If the Amazon Dash button is pushed and HELD for more than 5 seconds, the phone it's linked to would display an alert message or sound (preferably until the button is released). The button and the phone would be located in the same room. Does that sound feasible? What are some components/skills I would need to gather/learn for this project? Massive thanks for the help!

Tips on Welding

This is s a general forum for people to post questions and tips they have found over the time they've spent welding My question/tip is this - I recently had to weld two pieces of oddly shaped steel together. Placement and alignment was important for me but the shapes of the steel pieces made clamping them together a bit of a mission. My solution was to position and hold the pieces of steel using prestik (probably the south african equivalent of U.S. bluetack - maybe chewing gum could work) and then the steel pieces didn't move while I tacked them in place. My question is obviously whether this is a questionable practice because of fumes (I didn't notice any) or weakening of the weld from the prestik inclusion (it seems to be holding quite nicely though and the piece is now the switch activator for a press strip feeder. If you can't think of any problems then its a tip

Quick question

Hi, I need help. You see the street I live in has more cats than, well the musical cats,  and seeing as my garden seems to be they're preferred  choice for going to the toilet, I decided to build a motion sensing water sprayer. So off to Amazon I went and purchased some PIR sensors, a solar pump with a DC connection, bread boards wires and batteries and chucked it all together. Now the sensor will light an LED no problem but when I switch in the pump I get nothing. I read on tinternet that transistors can be used to up the juice but I was already far beyond my knowledge of circuits, components and the like. I even tried looking at sketches of PIR sensors to transistors, but after weeks of trying I'm no closer and have nothing to show for it but a headache.  If anyone can help and describe to me (in child like, basic terminology) how I wire up a transistor to a PIR and then a 4-12v 3.5watt pump that would be just super.  Or at-least put me out of my misery and tell me it's not doable.  Thanks.

Has The Clinic been abandoned?

Hello all,Recently I've been visiting The Clinic for advice about some of my 'Ibles. It's been a couple of weeks since the first visit, and none of the posts I made have any responses. Scrolling through some of the comments, it seems as though there are plenty of people asking for tips, but almost no replies. I reply to some of them where I think I can help, but the lack of responses to many of the requests make me start to wonder: Has The Clinic been abandoned by the "Seasoned Authors" who are intended to be helping out and giving advice? Also, on a side note, when I go to the Community page and search "the clinic" nothing comes up, and when I put in "clinic" I have to scroll through a couple entries until I find The Clinic. This is problematic, and representative of a huge problem I've noticed with the search bars on the forum: If you search for something very specific, nothing will come up, even if there is a post / topic / 'Ible with exactly those term in the title. Not sure if this is a bug or just bad programming, but it needs fixing.-D.E.

I don't want a HUGE prank because that could get everyone into trouble and ruin the trip altogether. The perfect prank would be something that isn't obvious, so it can be blamed on just dumb luck, but something humiliating or at least bothersome.

making concepts out of cardboard

I dont have much money but i have some card board, i've made an actual length sword from an anime (just the outline and taped the extra cardboard pieces with tape) and a cartoon character robot arm out of cardboard (this one i made an actual glove-like arm with finger holes that i can actually wear) because i figured this would be a good way to have an idea of how i could make them when i finally get money to buy real materials to make them with real details... What do you all think bout this? is making concepts out of cardboard a good idea or what other cheap materials can i use to make better concepts?
