A question: cheap hearing aid

I know a 93 year old in a rest home. When her daughter threw her out of her house (really!) she didn't get one of her hearing aids. The one she does have is marginal. Buying new is *really* expensive, and she doesn't have any money (related to the process of how her daughter threw her out of the house -- she cried every day for 6 months. No kidding.). I don't have the thousands it would cost to make it right.Recently we gave her an old cassette player and some cheap headphones. She loves it because she can really hear the contents of the tape.I'm looking for a simple device, reasonably small, that has a microphone and can drive the headphones with adjustable volume. I'm thinking small (mp3 player size, not hearing aid size). Any ideas?

Help making hearing aid

Hello! I need a bit of help for a project I am undertaking to make.My is to make such a device which detects the user whether a car or any other vehicle is approaching or not. The project is dedicated for the people who are deaf and cannot cross roads safely. What I think a solution could be is to make such a sensor which detects the horn of a car which further activates a vibrating motor in the pocket of the user. The vibratng motor is not at all an issue but the sensor being the problem. If anyone can please help either by giving your own solution or helping me in what I propose to do. Please help as this is not anything personal but a social cause. Hope to get an answer. Pranjal

Low-cost hearing aid for someone old

I know an old person--well, okay, my mom--who refuses to wear an in-ear hearing aid, even though she clearly needs it. For whatever reasons, she thinks its too expensive/too invasive/doesn't want to be bothered, even though Medicaid would probably pay for it etc. Not wanting to be reduced to shouting like I'm on an aircraft deck, I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions as to some sort of inexpensive amplifying device I could rig from some some more or less readily available parts. I'm envisioning something like the old style opera glasses on a long handle, though of course this device would be held to the ear (maybe like the old fashioned ear trumpet come to think of it). This way it wouldn't be too much of a hassle for her. I'm suggesting this arrangement rather than headphones of some sort, which again would isolate her (visually) from the rest of the folks at the old age home. If she could just hold something to her ear when she wanted to hear/converse and then drop it when she doesn't want to be clued in...well, that might be the way to proceed. As usual, low-cost design wins, as I don't have that much to spend. Thanks!

fake hearing aid, needed!

I'd like to take a basic $20 hearing aid - you know the type - and then rig it as a bluetooth earpiece. In short, I think it would be much better than using those 'slick' metallic earpieces I see people wearing around. I think it could be a great project, but I have very little knowledge about bluetooth electronics. Any suggestions for getting started?

Solar-powered hearing aids for the 3rd world

What's a partially deaf person in sub-Saharan Africa to do, when hearing aids typically cost hundreds of dollars, and he can't even afford the $1 a week to buy new batteries?Retired Canadian business executive Howard Weinstein came up with a solution - a cheap hearing aid for the 3rd world, redesigned with some donated 1st world technology knowhow. It's powered by rechargeable, rather than throw-away batteries - at about the same $1 cost per battery, except they last 2-3 years, and can be recharged using a pocket-sized solar charger. Oh, and he also found that the local deaf people make excellent employees to put these things together, because mastering sign language takes acute hand-eye coordination, needed to do the fine soldering and microelectronics.Sometimes the small things in life make a big difference...Something to Shout About - Africa needed hearing aids. Howard Weinstein got a chance to start over

Bluetooth TV audio for Disabled Vet

I am a disabled vet having suffered hearing loss in Iraq (amongst other things). I wear hearing aids and was given a device by the VA that I wear around my neck.  It is a bluetooth device that pairs my iPhone to my hearing aids.  A different device I was given plugged into my TV and sent an audio signal to a set of headphones.  The idea is so that I could turn up my volume w/out affecting everyone elses. BUT... I never got it to work, AND it's been lost since I moved. SO, I was hoping the community could help me figure out a way to incorporate the bluetooth idea but instead of from my phone to my hearing aids, I'd like to go from my TV to my hearing aids.

CAD CAM Instructables

Hi everyone Just wanted to get some thoughts about instructables using computer aided drawing, computer aided machining. I want to do a series on using CAD to make projects but I find it difficult to make a heap of screen shots and instructions into something that is interesting or "Instructable worthy"  (read BORING) . I know videos are good but in many schools videos are blocked and band width problems can make videos a pain in this part of the world. Also unless you have the same software that I'm using the instructable will be of little use to you. So I was thinking I would use free software and have links to download it. Also the instuctables would be about making a real project ,rather than just a tutorial on how to use the software. I personally get a little annoyed with an instructable that is.... step one download stl file step two send to 3d printer step  three  your done   So is there anything else that would make a CAD CAM Instructable something you would want to read? Thanks

Looking for some help with a mod.   I need the guts of a bluetooth receiver or headphones(just the bluetooth module) installed into the housing of a hearing aid.  Basically just the receiving module I dont need to talk on it, it is just for audio.  I don't need or want the hearing aid parts to work or anything else inside it other then the bluetooth receiver.  obviously I need the audio from the bluetooth to come out of it though. I just need it to be rechargeable.  I will provide all the materials.   That's all I am looking for and am willing to pay for the time.

How much profanity is appropriate for instructables.

I have a quick question. I made a film for my next instructable, with instructions spoken in it ,better than I could explained. The people in it used a little profanity. (I counted about 11 wordy dirts for 4 min video). Would this be okay for instructables or should i try to go through and beep out any profanity? Also i already posted the video on Youtube and it took like week before i got it all squared away, so i really don't want to upload a new video. And i dont want to post something offensive and risk having that robot beat me up. The topic is about first aid. I had to take a first aid class for work and I filmed some of the hands on stuff with my camera.

Hello,  I do not know very much about electronics in general but I would like to make a circuit that allows me to run a group of " LED "  lights, maybe ( 6 to 8  ) in PARALLEL.  I would also like to do the same for hand held " Lasers "  ( 3 to 4 ) in PARALLEL. To make it more complicated, I would like to be able to use the same power source to run both groups at the same time. I would like to be able to turn either group on or off independently while using the same power source. The power source will either be --2  D cell -- or -- 4 AA -- batteries. Normally each LED uses 3 hearing aid batteries. This is the same for each LASER pointer. I think each hearing aid battery is about 1.5 volts but Im not sure what the amperage is. I would like to do it as simple as possible. I hope I can get all of the parts at Radio Shack. I have no idea where to start, any help would be appreciated !

Doctorow Novel Comes True?

In "For the Win", Cory Doctorow wrote about an exploitative on-line world where third-world sweatshops ran through online games to earn treasures to sell to Western gamers.  These people were known as "gold farmers". Guess what? Up to 100,000 people in China and Vietnam are playing online games to gather gold and other items for sale to Western players, a report suggests. The global market for such virtual game goods is worth at least $3bn (£1.8bn) the World Bank study estimates. About 75% of that comes from so-called "gold farmers" who stockpile game currencies to sell on later. However, Encouraging these in-game services could aid development in many poorer countries, said the report. The high proportion of money from such sales that reaches those in the country where the work was done [23% to the individual] might mean that it could aid development in many nations, said the report which was co-commissioned by the World Bank and development organisation InfoDev. D Day Fast Approaching

Yup, this weekend marks the deadline where kids pay their deposit to commit to the college that they will attend in the fall. It's a major landmark decision for all and I wish the best of luck to those part of the Class of 2020.  Hopefully all were able to make an informed decision of their choice and will be happy wherever they go. So here are some random thoughts on the process: Applying for college is way different now then from I went through it - Why did all of you do applications for more than 10 colleges? (Is it more trying to game the system for admissions, although colleges game it for their stats rankings, and raking up fees by those testing services/prep courses/financial aid forms) Many are emotionally unprepared for the rejection that comes along with it. Many are emotionally unprepared for the realization that most colleges are super expensive and may not be affordable even if you are accepted. It may appear senseless in who gets in and further who gets merit scholarships or full ride to some places. There is an air of mass hysteria during that wait period for the admission decisions to come out. Certain college forums out there seem to feed on that. Don't chance it. Hard to say what is worse, filling out the CSS Profile financial aid forms or going through a TSA checkpoint on a bad day. Gotta love the financial aid letters stating the school is pleased to offer you a sizeable loan to send your kid to college. I have to say we have been fortunate to be able to make our final decision a few weeks ago. I am also fortunate to have won many instructables contests with t-shirts as prizes. That will be her wardrobe for the next 4 or 5 years.

Arduino code help

To the Instructables members,       I'm trying to write a program that uses a pushbutton (momentary) to turn on and off LEDs.  I have two LEDs and one button.  Basically, I want to be able to push the button to switch LEDs.  One push - one LED turns on - another push - the second LED turns on - another push - the first LED turns on - and so on.  Anyone know how to do that?  I'm sure there's a simple solution that I've missed.  Any aid would be awesome.

In The Gambia all schools can participate in a tree nursery competition.  As the children are learning how to grow saplings for reforestation or for having fruit trees in the village, this is a very important activity in their education.  A class in Sambel Kunda village was introduced to the way a tree nursery can be set up, using seeds of the nearby baobab trees, planting them in cans, cups or poly pots.  This is one of the different aid projects contributing to the sustainable development of their village.

How to Remember Pi!

This nifty poem I created is called a "piem", a pi poem. I only made a poem for the first 10 digits, but you can make more. For example, the first word has 3 letters, representing the # 3. The second has 1 letter, representing the # 1. et cetera. Here is one I made up:    For a week a broke belittled he person aided all. Notice the coinciding #s: 3     1    4    1    5          9        2       6         5     3  -->  3.141592653 --> the first 10 digits of pi.

Removing Bicycle Decals

Does anyone know of a good way to remove the decals from a bicycle, specifically a Mongoose Montana? On the Interweb, a lot of people say you can, but just as many others say that doing so will ruin the paint and mess up the clearcoat that is applied over the decals. Is there a way to tell if my bike has a clearcoat above the decals? If I can remove them, would heating them with a hairdryer aid the removal process? And the sticky residue - what's the best thing to get rid of it? Lighter fluid? Thanks!

Instructables in Edutopia

We got a nice mention in Taking Back the Class from July 2006 Edutopia. Some of the most intriguing aids reside at Instructables.com, a site produced by Squid Labs, a silly-sounding but serious organization staffed in part by alums of the MIT Media Lab. Instructables, part of the group's Engineering for Good program, tackles projects it hopes "will make a positive impact on the world," allowing anyone -- not just educators -- to upload detailed instructions on how to build or create a wide variety of projects. They're illustrated by photos or step-by-step drawings and include how to build a robot out of a computer mouse, how to craft a marshmallow gun, and how to create a helicopter toy.

CAD group

Being an engineer typically means being fluent in a dozen or more computer aided design packages. Fortunately, once you know one, you can pretty quickly pick up another. To help new users learn and expert users find a few new tricks, Alibre has started a CAD group on Instructables. As free CAD programs go, it's top of the bunch and a great way to start as a new user. However, the CAD group is by no means Alibre-specific; it's a place to share your tips, tricks, and how-tos for any package. Check it out, learn something new, and share your knowledge!

sound-only area and cancellation

I'm looking for advice. (now this is difficult to explain but I'll try my best) I am trying to design a way to have a dance floor in an open area that will have an area where you can hear the music but away from the area it can't be heard. I'm attempting to do this using an array of speakers around the dance floor that will cancel out the music past the dance floor. Each speaker will face away from the area and be equipped with a microphone (directed torwards the main speaker) that then goes through and amplifier and then to the speaker (wired up so that it will emmit an opposing sound wave). This would essentially create a sound barier. I have attatched a picture as a visual aid.

Patent law, Prior Art

I am somewhat familiar with patent law.   One of the details of law that I like is the idea of "prior art"  Basically if you publish an idea, someone else can't come along at a later date and patent it.   You have established "prior art."    This may and may not aid you in patenting the idea yourself, but at least someone else can't patent it and shut you out of the market.   A full blown patent may cost 1000s of $, but publishing is a different matter. At least that is my understanding. Does stuff published online (thru instructables, for example) count as "prior art."   ? Also do you personally retain all rights?  or does the website?  Some of both   ? Y? N? M?

LED display to an Audio Click? Visual click track aid for drummers required.

Hi Folks, I'm searching for some info on how to make a visual "Click track" aid. In one of my bands, we use a click track on some tracks and live on others. I use a single in ear monitor for the click track which s fine for most tracks, but for some, I need the click fairly loud and this cannot be good for the old lugs long-term. So, I want to make a small LED display or two that can react to an audio signal that is fed from the click track channel. I've seen many instructables that show how to make LED blink/flash etc to music, but my requirements are a little different (I think). The click at the beginning of each bar is higher in pitch and has a higher velocity compared to the other click in that bar, so for example; Playing in 4/4 time signature: click 1 - Velocity =100 - pitch C5 click 2 - Velocity =90 - pitch C4 click 3 - Velocity =90 - pitch C4 click 4 - Velocity =90 - pitch C4 If playing in another time signatures ie; 3/4 or 6/8, then I would also need to cater for this in the display Questions: 1. Does anyone know how I could devise a system that would light a Red led for beat 1 and then perhaps a white (or other colour) led for the rest of the beats, but in a sequential fashion? 1,2,3,4. 2. Is it possible to change which led flashes based on either pitch or velocity? I could even make the front of the led display show actual numbers over a perspex cover so at anytime, a quick glance will show me exactly where I am in the bar. So rather than coloured leds. So to recap, I'd like to be able to take an additional audio feed from the click track channel from a mixer, into this new "drummers visual click track aid" device and have it react to the clicktrack and display that in the form of beats per bar based on either pitch or velocity of the click track. I currently use a couple of wood block sounds for the click track because they are very clean and short. Many thanks for taking the time to read through my requests and if you're the kind of clever person who could make such a device, I'd be more than happy to pay you for your input and suggestions. Many thanks in advance and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Cheers Phill

My First Project (Electronic Questions)

Good morning everyone. I'm new but very optimistic on the creation and programming in PIC and I would love Buddy aid for my project. Project Idea: Store 60 responses at most 1 character (núemro or letter), to questions such as: 1 = 2 = 3 = 60 = .... At the end of the data / informed responses would be sent to the PC via USB cable or WIFI for later imported by the PC system. My questions prior to starting the project would be as follows: I'm thinking of using PIC16F877A microchip and NOKIA5110 screen. A) Any other microship less expensive cases do this activity? B) The screen initially want to use this model because it allows me to print graphs on startup and letters larger than 16x2 screens. The following outline of the design for greater understanding.

How to Make Fibre Reinforced Plastic Box

Hello, I am working on a project in Togo, West Africa whereby we make information commercials in the local language. Africa has roughly 3000 languages, and this device called "Mama Says," attracts the locals with films, then educates with announcements every 5 minutes in the local language. Most aid organizations do not seem to understand the locals do not speak the lingua franca language. I need a box made out of Fiber Reinforced Plastic, or something light, I need suggestions on how to find companies to do this? I need a step by step explanation on how to make a prototype, and estimations of cost? This is also for brainstorming, I am looking for ideas. Thank you, Andy Lee Graham of Hobo Traveler Com.

Scholarship Robot Proposal: Garden Bot

Right now, my wife and I have a small garden(5'x7' if that). We have had good success at growing tomatoes so far. None of them have started to ripening so this would be a good test environment. The main idea would be to come up with a way to have the robot pick the tomatoes. One idea is to have a camera positioned on the tomato plants. The camera relays the information to a PC that does the visual processing. The PC sends general coordinates to the robot and the robot picks the fruit (tomatoes are really fruit). if the visual processing is not feasibility in the time frame available. The robot could water the plants at a certain time and a variable amount of water per plant. I have a couple of arduinos that can be used to aid in the functionality of the robot. If the arduino zigbee unit comes out it would be cool to use that as well.

Here are links to the Instructables created from our build night: Knight's Helmet Custom Lampshade And here are some pictures of some other creations we made! Also, the Knight's Helmet has gone in to have a life of its own in a web series being created here at the library by its creator.  The series is called Ulrog, and uses many other cardboard and Strawbees created costumes.  Check it out here!

If you have a SONY product you're screwed. Especially SONY USB products for PC's. Drop the bomb on SONY and let them go OOB with a bang!!! Love your Playstation? Just hack the $#!+ out of it! SONY forfeited their DMCA rights. Stop brown-nosing SONY or you'll get computer-AIDS! They haven't learned their lesson. Search for SONY USB ROOTKIT and get as pi$$ed as me! SONY is the reason I haven't touched Windows since their first illegal megahack in 2005. They either owe me a fortune or I own their sorry @$$3$!!! (By default they acknowledge my Pandora's Box/Predictive Music Synth tech, since they did not choose to instead compensate me for actual damages by "SPECIFIC HARM MUSIC" ... which they did not acknowledge as Malware). I am not liable for this rant. I have first amendment rights and this is true.

About making Single Board Computers...

Hi guys! I just wondered how can I make a custom Single Board Computer... I am interested to make a custom 8 bit AVR SBC and 32 bit ARM SBC (Must I learn even with the 16 bit architecture?) in a cheap way and without the aid of Raspberry Pi and Arduino. I have these questions: - There is any book or else about learn making Single Board Computers? - Where can I find the components for the board? - I can program and I know a few of many languages (C,C++,Python,Javascript,HTML5,CSS,PHP,MySql). Must I make an OS for everything for make my board work or I can make a "bootable software" (like a MP3 player)? And again, there is a book or else for learn this? Thank you for your time!
