Altered Barbie in San Francisco

It's time for another Altered Barbie exhibition in San Francisco - perhaps the best thing that's happened to Barbie since her introduction over 50 years ago. Here Barbie "breaks out of the mainstream American concept of beauty and social stigma. The new Altered Barbie metamorphoses and naturally blossoms into a diversity of attitude, social roles, politics, and culture expressed through the medium of art." If you've seen lavonnesbarbies at Maker Faire, you already have a good idea of what you're in for.  If not, check out the great gallery hosted at Altered Barbie and find out more about the upcoming exhibition!

Hilarious: Altered-Perception Sports

I saw this video of a Japanese game show where players try to play a game of soccer with binoculars strapped to their heads: It made me think: what other kinds of games could you have, where your own perceptions were the challenge? Fisheye lenses over each eye? Periscopes? Let's hear some ideas; maybe we can come up with some cool, brand-new Instructable ideas.

How to alter the code in this LED chase

Hi,here is the code i have for a chase controlled by a button. When the button is engaged (held in) the chase runs. When the button is released the chase stops. My question is how can I make the LEDS appear to go haywire when the button is released and not simply go off. // A chase controlled by a button int Button=2; //button assigned to pin 2 int timer = 150; // The higher the number, the slower the timing. int ledPins[] = { 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 }; // an array of pin numbers to which LEDs are attached int pinCount = 8; // the number of pins (i.e. the length of the array) void setup() { Serial.begin(9600); pinMode(Button, INPUT); int thisPin; // the array elements are numbered from 0 to (pinCount - 1). // use a for loop to initialize each pin as an output: for (int thisPin = 0; thisPin < pinCount; thisPin++) { pinMode(ledPins[thisPin], OUTPUT); } } //turn LEDS on void loop() { while (digitalRead(Button)==HIGH); { //delay (10); Serial.println("LOW"); } while (digitalRead(Button)==LOW) { Serial.println("HIGH"); for (int thisPin = 0; thisPin < pinCount; thisPin++) { //turn leds on digitalWrite(ledPins[thisPin], HIGH); delay(timer); //turn leds off digitalWrite(ledPins[thisPin], LOW); } //turn leds on for (int thisPin = pinCount -1; thisPin >= 0; thisPin--) { //turn leds off digitalWrite(ledPins[thisPin], HIGH); delay(timer); digitalWrite(ledPins[thisPin], LOW); } } } many thanks, Frank

Alter a dress (BARELY too small) with a side zipper?

I have this dress that is just BARELy too small in the bust area.  Its a strapless sweatheart neckline dress.  It has boning a side zipper, so I am not sure what to do. Originally, I thought I would just add some ribbon up the back.  Since its strapless with and really loose once its past the bust area (BRAIN FART, I cannot think of the word...) the ribbon would only lace up about 6 inches in the back.  BUt the zipper is on the side, so I dont know what to do. also, the dress is a sheer fabric, with two layers and will not be the easiest to sew.  And, it has boning. Any ideas?

I need to find a way to make a weak smell stronger without using things like fans.  The smell is good but you can't smell it unless you put it right under your nose.  Is there any chemical or something that can do this? Thanks. EDIT- the smell in question is deodorant.

Has anyone hacked a bread machine controller circuit?

I've got an old Breadman (TR333) bread machine and it's still chugging along.  The newer models have more useful programs (like Jam and Pasta) but have horrible flimsy baking pans.  What I'd like to do is reprogram my old solid bread machine to do these new programs.  I've seen the hacks to roast coffee in the bread machines but I don't think they mess with the controller circuit.  I think they just re-wire them to mix constantly and point a heat gun at the beans.

Alter a small solar water pump to run off battery ?

I bought a small smaller pump off amazon (1.2 Watt Solar Power Water Pump Garden Fountain - for fountains, waterfalls and water displays)  the solar panel is crappy and very finicky ( cheep) and does not hold a charge .. I was hoping to alter the power source to another solar panel or add another panel that comes off those solar lights that holds a change .. Alternatively modify to use a battery source with a on off switch ..  I know I don't need to alter the pump just want a continuous  power supply. Current Specs that cam  with the unit : solar power supply 7 v 1.2 w ( if that !) power of pump 7v , 1.1 w/ max lift 100 cm / size of solar panel ( 100mm x 100m x 25 mm) / max outflow quality of pump 180lh max water height 30 60 cm ( if that!)

Site software priorities -- aesthetic alterations vs. repairing functionality?

(Yes, this is a rant.  "Suggestions" are implicit in my complaints...) I am curious as to where the rather long list of known and reported bugs falls with respect to priorities regarding the I'bles server software. For the past few weeks, it has been clear that I'ble staff are "experimenting" with altering the appearance and available features of the sites pages.  Switching information around, removing primary category links, eliminating classified lists within categories. Certainly developing and deploying new features, which add value to the site and thereby (hopefully!) increase revenue, should be a high priority for limited staff resources.  However, it doesn't seem quite so obvious that removing features, or tweaking things like font size and color (which for accessibility should be under control of the browser, anyway), really deserve precedence over repairing problems that have been known for months or years.

How new data can substantially alter interpretations -- placoderm evolution

An article in Nature (PDF below) reports on the discovery of internal embryos in placoderm (armored fish) fossils. Besides being interesting, these otherwise mundane discoveries have the possibility to radically alter our interpretation of the origin and relationships of early vertebrates. Here's the "News and Views" editorial on the research article, which is more accessible to non-specialists than the original paper.

How can I alter a suit after extreme weight loss?

I had breast cancer, and a double mastectomy. Lost 50 lbs in all, and now none of my clothes fit! I have several nice blouses and jackets, as well as pants, that are way too big for me now. My insurance canceled on me, so I can't go to a tailor or buy new - will have to live to 200 to pay all the medical bills! I can take up sleeves and hems, but my jackets and blouses are way too wide across the shoulders/back, and my pants? Well, I look like Bozo the clown. Can anyone assist in how to best take in for a good fit? All help appreciated! All I can wear right now are sweats... :-\

Dress too small in the bust, zipper wont go up - can't alter?

Hi there, I'm going to a party dressed as Tinkerbell and my friend has the perfect green dress to lend me. The problem is the fit is off in the bust area. The dress was made for her and so is not a standard size. I just tried it on, and it looks great from the front. BUT I can't zip it past my bust, which is much larger than hers. I can't alter the dress as it is not mine, so any ideas on how I could hide the back without it looking too obvious? It might help that I'm wearing wings...

I want to replace or alter the crystal oscillator on my UNO as part of a electronics suicide workshop

I want to replace or alter the crystal oscillator on my UNO as part of a electronics suicide workshop, look at it as circuit bending i guess. I want to know approximately what could happen- is it going to run a simple standalone program, I think serial and flashing will not be possible  post-lobotomy but i can load the program before i bend it. The processing speed will be the same but any Millis() or clock functions will be way out? Will it just trip over its own feet and crash? I have heard interesting things about using your finger over the solder spots to make it run at 60Hz etc...Anyway i will experiment but i wanted to get some predictions from people who know this stuff at a more fundamental level! Cheers!!

Looking for some suggestions to repair an guitarist anime figurine, Alters Azusa Nakano is her name. Answered

I have an anime figurine made by alter. She is a Azusa Nakano with a cool guitar. A very cute figurine I must say.Anyway uh, she took a little tumble and her guitar got slightly damaged, specifically the tuning knobs up top did, four were lost and one was damaged a little. So I am trying to figure out how to make new knobs, how doable is this? They are roughly 1.6ish mm in diameter pearly white discs that have slightly sloped edges, so they are circles but rounded on the corners instead of perfectly flat. Oh and they are super thin.there is a little stick attached to the disc which connects to the guitar. So in short I am trying to figure out how to make little white plastic lollipops. I can paint some parts if I have to, or use a little metal if it is safe. Any suggestions? Sorry for bothering you all. I am a noob, i know, and I bow to your greatnesses. :P? Oh the included picture is her with her guitar intact. It is one someone else took, not of my figurine but rather the same make, so I am not claiming credit for the awesome photography, but what I am looking to make are the white things up top. I ordered a set of jewelers drill bits and some steel wire which I think might help out a lot. Also my dad is a model railroader and I was thinking his skills may help me where I fall short. Anyways thanks in advance.

LED 'screen' that will toggle between two images for cheap? Answered

I'm looking to make a prop soon that is basically a backpack with a small screen on it. Said screen alters between two states: green with a smiley face, or red with a rather angry looking face. I am looking to make it so I can alter said screen between the two states, for as cheap as possible. My first thought was to have three pieces of plexi: one with the smile, one with the angry face, and one blank, putting the blank one in the middle. Then, light the edges of the other two with the corresponding colors. However, I don't know how well that would work, or if there is a better option.  Thanks in advance!

How can I heat my unheated basement using the existing hotwater pipes but without altering the hot water system? Answered

How can I use the heat from these without altering the hot water system? I was considering encasing them in ducting and using a 12v fan to blow cool air in one end and warm air out of the other. How might I alter a greenhouse paraffin heater to burn more CO2 and less heat, please? Answered

I've built a few things since coming across this site, one of which is a basic hydroponic table for salad greens. I have a paraffin-based greenhouse heater, but I want it to burn with less heat. Do you know if this is possible, please? Alternative suggestions are welcome, with the aim of burning natural fuels to produce CO2. The heat is not needed during these warm days (although it is turning a little colder outside the greenhouse!) I have had a look at 'professional'solutions and they run to about US$500 which is far too much cash. I also checked to see what they did different to a normal burner but other than saying they burn lean they are not helping any further. I'm guessing they burn lean by allowing less oxygen into the fuel/air mix? Thanks for stopping by.

We need to alter our chicken house gate to allow chickens to pass through but not wild birds. Answered

We have covered the whole structure with bird-netting to keep wild birds out of the chickens' food, with some of it draped over the gate opening to within about 30cm of the ground.  We need to be able to get in and out of the full-height gate easily ourselves, as well as allowing the chickens to go in and out freely.  The trick is how to do that without allowing wild birds to also pass through. I thought of leaving the netting draped over most of the open gateway (we shut the inwards opening door only at night time) and then having a smaller gate at the bottom that the chickens can push through at the bottom 30cm, perhaps made of a cafe-blind cut into strips and fixed to a rod attached across the lower part of the gate. Alternatively, we could cut out some of the lowest horizontal bars of the gate and replace them with a lockable flap, hinged at the top. Any ideas of what the flap could be made of that the chickens would be able to freely pass through and wouldn't be frightened of?  I made a doggy door in another gate out of the lid of a plastic storage container but the chickens don't go through this (and I don't want them to learn how). I would appreciate any suggestions. Cheers, Mandy

Halloween Costume Help

I decided to be Marilyn Monroe for Halloween and I have a long pink dress that I am going to alter to emulate Monroe's pink dress from the film Gentleman Prefer Blondes. Does anybody have any ideas how I could do this? The three main things that I need to do are get rid of the rhinestones in the middle, make a bow for the back, and get rid of the straps.  I know how to alter the middle but have no idea what to do about the bow or the straps. Any ideas for how to make the bow would be very appreciated. I know that I could just cut the straps off but there is no support on the top whatsoever and the top is a little loose on me. The material is silk so if I just cut off the straps I'm pretty sure the dress would just fall off. Any ideas are very appreciated!
