I have one AMD athlon 64 CPU ( 2.2 Ghz ) for sale; two sticks of 256MB of DDR RAM and a heat sink for the CPU. I tested them and they work The price I am asking for is $25 for all of it.

It looks like this is possible with an Nvidia GPU, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to do this with my AMD based card. Everything I've found online seems fairly dated, and I was wondering if there have been any updates to this. Thanks

Hi, I am relatively new to building custom computers. However, I feel like I know enough to actually build one. The first problem I'm having though is finding a good motherboard. I won't be doing a whole lot of hard core gaming, but probably a little(Halo, Fallout 3/New Vegas, MW2, etc...). So I would say I'd need the following specs(minimum, more is usually better): 4GB DDR3 RAM PCI Slot(s) 3 SATA devices(2 HDDs, 1 Disk Drive) 500GB HDD(s) AMD AM3 Athlon II x2 445 VGA & DVI I think I've found a good mobo to fit this bill: GIGABYTE GA-785GMT-USB3 Can anyone vouch for it, or offer a better suggestion?

I found that i use older and slower computers more than i do my desktop modded to be fast, it's the fastest computer in my house! still for some reason i keep using an overheating, amd 366 laptop to play dos games and a pentium 4 laptop with 256mb of ram, instead of my desktop with a celeron D 3.23ghz (overclocked of course, how else?) and 1gb of ram. why? lol.

To Whom it May Concern:I recently discovered a website dedicated to knex: http://www.knextoyzone.com/. However, on this website I found three familiar guns found on Instructables and KnexInnovation. Two are Dsman's, and one is Loosewire's. They are found by clicking on "Gallery" amd then the subcategory "Guns". If you didn't post these guns and knew nothing of this, please speak now and maybe we can e-mail the creator of this website that their users are commiting plagiarism. Thank-you for your time.

I know that it's possible to crack open a "oldish" laptop or even a new one and remove the shielding around the lcd itself and shine a special light through it that's bright enough where you essentially make a lcd projector. I have a old toshiba satellite 2520cds with specs like a 2mb vid card, 96mb of ram, 4 gig hd, and a 300mhz amd processor. It runs somewhat fast, even for windows xp that I installed on it and plan to upgrade the hd down the road, but I wonder, would I be able to do the same thing with this? The screen is an older lcd that has that "motion blur" effect to it, so would it be worth it? Is there some way I could connect this lcd to my video card on my pentium 2 I have that would allow me to actually watch movies?

We have a huge selection of old videocassete tapes from home movies, TV recordings, and feature films that we want to archive onto DVD. I have the software to edit and burn the DVDs, but no way to get it onto the computer. I have a Lenovo 3000 J series, with 1 GB RAM, an AMD Athalon X2 64 2.01 GHz dual core processor, a 250 GB hard drive, and a dual-layer DVD/CD burner. nVidia GeForce 6100 built-in video card. My VCR has only RCA-composite video, but S-Video is possible through an old high-quality VHS camera. Would I need to get a new video card, or just a converter for RCA-USB? Low-budget recommendations would be appreciated.

I'm new to this forum. I need some instructions. I have an RJ45-cat5 male to USB female connector that I bought for 3 bucks. I've tried using it to connect my HP 1050 j410 USB printer to my Linksys WRT54GS (wireless) router so I can have a network printer. (The Desktop is directly wired to the cable modem and the to the router.) It doesn't work, but I don't know if it's the connector itself, or that the printer will not communicate with the router, directly. Is there a way to test the connector with another piece of hardware to determine whether the connector is actually any good? BTW.. I can't determine from HP, whether the 1050 j410 USB printer can become a network printer. Should I just go buy a USB print server for 20 bucks, or whatever? I'm using an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop with AMD-64 processor. Thanks to you for the best advice. Shobuz99

There are nasty fan inside of my laptop. The fan is loud and sound is nasty and works always (its such model of laptop), so I want to remove bottom of the laptop's corpus and may be top of the cooling pad and use the pad instead of internal cooler (which I will plug out). I have AMD. I think that it's may work because: fan inside laptop blows at radiator (which is on another end of copper pipe), not right at place where processors located. And I want big fan that will blow right at those part of cooling system where processors located. I'm not gonna remove copper pipe, just plug out default fan and use pad's instead so that it will blow at cooling system from the bottom. I'm gonna use pad with 220-250 mm fan. What do you think ?

As a few of you may know, I haven't been on for a few days (*caugh* over a week *caugh*) due to hardware troubles switching to linux. Being sick of windows tendency to slow down with age and the inability to make that better without a full re-install, I decided that linux mint was the way to go. Long story short, it seems that the standard hardware i've had for a few years didn't like mint or ubuntu much and refused to install correctly, so I did my homework and built my own system which turned out to be about half the price of comparable brand name systems, although I did manage to use the same case from my old system and skimped on hard drives and extra cards. My new hardware consists of an Asus M4A88T-M motherboard, an AMD Phenom 2 X6 1055T processor, 8gb of cheap ram, various hard drives and various dvd drives all stuffed into an old tower. The Ideanator is back, and this time minty fresh!

I got this old gem a month ago from a guy that recently and obviously needed a new one, but it worked this long surprisingly for power points. I must admit that it runs decently fast with xp and not having turned anything but system restore off. It's got a 333mhz amd 3D processor which I want to try upgrading with a k6 down the road as it IS removable. 96mb of ram and a lousy 4gig hd that slows the whole system down. But that is barely important. I had a swell idea of utilizing the irda port on the back for controlling it via a tv remote or any I might have kicking around which I have plenty of. Also, I wanted to be able to CONTROL my tv, vcr, dvd player, ect with it in itself aswell.Google didn't help me much this round as apparently there is software (which I did try) avalible but it's meant for home made or certain commercial infrared ports that plug in via serial, usb and perhaps parellel that I saw. I also saw a hint of what seems to be that the built in irda sensor in most laptops aren't able to receive commands from most remotes for learning or controlling it due to the filtered out bands. But they are supposedly capable of sending commands just fine. Now this is a OLD OLD laptop and there could be a chance that it can receive the commands too? Even still, you could pull it apart and modify the sensor to accept signals couldn't you? I'm looking for something to do with this laptop and this seems perfectly suitable for it as the screen is older and has that "motion blur" effect to it and so makes playing nes games a bit hard :-P. Sorry for the long post, but hey, if someone could help me with this, it would certainly make me happy.

I seem to be fighting a loosing battle with my network, things just never work like they're supposed to.For example, sometimes I have to reinstall my network printer on both my laptop and my ibook to get it to print again, even when the server has been running fine sans problems for a week, it will randomly do this shit.Another example is, right now I "was" just trying to copy some music over to an external firewire drive on my server that I have shared. I had the permissions on everyone set to full access yesturday but I noticed when I restarted my server, it did not detect my drive properly until I re-seated the firewire cable :S Thusly somehow it lost my share configuration for my music folder.I set it up, but this time I left it on read only because I wasn't planning on adding any music earlier, itunes and everything was working fine when i mounted the volume. I went on there and changed the permissions back to full access just 20 minutes ago as I wanted to add some music to my drive, I right clicked in my mac os x explorer and made a new folder just to see if I could copy over now, it worked, aswell as deleting the folder. So I drag the 60mb folder of mp3 files over, and it just sat there...and sat...and sat.... until eventually giving me an error -36, upon searching about, it means "-36 ioErr I/O error (bummers)".That's straight from the horse's mouth, and that really tells me nothing, what exactly does "bummers" mean???It's frustrating for me non stop, and it does this to me with other shares in mac os x, or they will randomly disconnect for no reason, sometimes after 15 minutes or sometimes after 3 days. I will note too, I can't connect to my server now, it just says missing alias in the mac os finder. Yet I can VNC into it no problem, wowa, but just upon checking my pc just now, it can't access any shares on it either, the cursour is just spinning, however I usually have no problems with my pc's accessing it, other than the printer thing.I'm just so god damned frustrated with my set up, I've looked it up and down until I was exhausted, several times, and I know I must be missing somewhere along the way, but I just can't understand how it doesn't work like I want it to. Shares are set up, firewire is out of the question, permissions set up, mac os x can log into server, check. It's all good until I actually go to use it for something when I really need it.I'll have to restart my server now to get it to work properly again...it was fine until I vnc'd into it to change the permissions, im gonna try restarting it now and just access it from it's own screen, perhaps vnc has something to do with it.Oh and to clear up any questions before they're asked, this is how I have it configured, as quickly and detailed as I can explain it:My network starts at my ADSL +2 4 port router/modem thingy (Speedtouch 546, it has it's own connection issues on the isp's side, but they don't seem impact LAN side data flow)That then gets split off to:*Port 1: iBook G4*Port 2: 25 ft. cable to 8 port switch (I'll explain that a little further down)*Port 3: 50 ft. cable to apple airport basestation in livingroom for wifi*Port 4: My main AMD PcMy ibook is configured for DHCP with manual address 192.168.1.64The switch just makes the modem think I have like 5 computers hooked into one port lol...My airport, for a long time I thought was perfectly fine as far as usuage with my thinkpad, however, I've been noticing the last few times it's powered on, the airport connects to the thinkpad, but assigns it a 169.xxx.xxx.xx address which does not exist on my network, but if I turn the wifi off and back on, it connects fine and assigns it a dynamic ip on my 192.168.1.xxx network.Other than that, I have it in bridge mode so that it acts pretty much the same as if the laptop were wired via ethernet, vnc, filetransfers, and online games all work good albeit the wireless delay, still not bad in VNC however. My AMD machine is set up for static ip at 192.168.1.66Switch:Port 2 of my modem goes to port 8 (uplink) of my switch.*Port 1: My server (Configured for static ip at 192.168.1.65)The rest are just my B&W; g3 setup for static ip at 192.168.1.68 and an old P2 I believe is at .69 and a 1.5 amd athlon aswell setup on 192.168.1.71, all of those in no particular order except I made sure my server stays on port 1.I did have everything setup so my server was on port 2 of my modem all by itself, but I needed the switch over by my server so I moved it, however, I was still having these problems before hand, even when my server was running on a completely different motherboard! Also, maybe could someone tell me why my server won't boot unless I have a bootable disk in the drive (IE: my windows 2003 server install disk), just so it goes to "press any key to boot cd.......", of course I don't push any key, and it continues to boot into windows. However, if I dare start my server without that disc in there, it simply goes to "Invalid System Disk error, insert correct/valid disk (can't remember it word for word), and push enter"I've tried reinstalling windows server 03, and same deal, yet it's using the same hard disk for the OS that my previous motherboard used and booted from not a problem.I really apologize for the long post... but I've quite literally burnt myself out and lost all motivation with continuing to expand my computer network and so I figured I would ask for help on here for one last resort, but I know many people probably won't read it due to the long post, but I have a lot of problems I don't have answers for and I need to explain myself somewhat thoroughly or else I won't find the proper solution for the problem, now will I?

I want to have some control over the temperature inside the Orchidium I'm designing and I thought it might be cool :) to use a Peltier Device (device aka module) (Peltier aka TEC or Thermoelectric Cooler). I find I need a lot of help! (Please!) Alright, this isn't a completed Instructable, it's a plea for help, and maybe if the subjects lie in some of your fields of knowledge then we can all enjoy and learn from it. So, the Orchidium I'm designing is an acrylic case 24"W x 18"D x 30"High. It's to grow species orchids indoors in a microclimate, with LED grow lights, proper humidity, air movement and temperature control. (Of course, other critters would like the case, too: poison dart frogs, newts, carniverous plants, etc.. But I'm going to call it the Orchidium.) I've got it all pretty well planned out so that it can be built for a very reasonable price (yes, including the LEDs) and still be aesthetically pleasing and real purdy, too. All planned out EXCEPT FOR THE TEMPERATURE CONTROL. I was looking for some way to cool my case and I stumbled across Peltier devices in eBay. They are CHEAP, costing about $5 or more, depending on the Wattage, etc. The eBay sellers intimated that all you have to do is plug them in and the device gets ice cold. Later, with diligent web-study I learned that actually ONE SIDE of the peltier gets cold, while the other side gets hot. Also, you MUST attach a heat sink and fan to both (?) sides of the peltier. Also, that these devices are not ready to be plugged in; you must attach a DC power supply to them. Oh, another trick that these miraculous devices do is reverse their hot & cold sides when you reverse the polarity of their juice. Ideally, I would like a Peltier device with heatsinks, fans, a thermostat and a DC wall transformer attached... the Peltier/heatsinks/fans would measure about 2" x 2" x 6" and would be mounted in the sidewall of the Orchidium. When the temperature is 65-85F degrees the orchids are happy and the device is Off. But when the thermostat senses the internal temp going over 85F it turns on the Peltier, cold side inside, and so the inside of the case doesn't go up to 90-95F like mine does now; it cools the case a little. Conversely, for someone with chilly orchids or sneezing newts the thermostat would switch the Peltier to hot-side-in to heat the Orchidium a bit. The retail cost for us to buy a Peltier device, 2 heatsinks w/fans and a DC transformer is cheap... roughly $30. The thermostat might be cheap, but I don't know enough about what's needed. If it's too expensive then the Orchidium can do without it. I was hoping I could find an off-the-shelf Orchidium cooler/heater. No such luck. These miraculous Peltier devices are still practically undiscovered -- relatively speaking. People want to use them to cool their computer chips but are hampered by condensation; my orchids welcome condensation. Pathetically, it seems the most common use for Peltiers now is to cool/heat the little boxes on your car seat... they plug into your cigarette lighter and keep your 6-pack cold. Come on! You folks at Instructables can surely help me figure out how to best make an Orchidium cooler with this barely-discovered and poorly-utilized device. I started out a few weeks ago writing to many of the Peltier manufacturers around the world in hopes they might help me in choosing which of their modules I might purchase for my Orchidium. None of them was any help. They wanted to know how many million Orchidiums I planned per year. They told me my basic plan was hopeless or inefficient cost-wise. A Swedish company wanted $800. An American company wanted $500. Some other company wanted $5,000 to $8,000. I wrote back and said I could get a Peltier on eBay for five bucks. The Swedes snottily claimed that their Peltiers were very high quality. No. No way is any svensker Peltier $795 better than ANY other Peltier in the known universe. They both get cold and grow ice crystals on one side. I just need to cool the case A LITTLE BIT, like from 90 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. I am not trying to make a refrigerator or freezer. The case (Orchidium) is large, at about 7.5 cubic feet, and there is practically no insulation. Acrylic provides a little insulation, that's all. The temp of the interior of the case is derived from the ambient room temperature of your house... and the lights... which is why I designed it with LEDs. There is a constantly-operating muffin fan inside the case to provide air movement for the plants, but it does not provide any evaporative cooling since it's a closed case. So, first off what size Peltier do you recommend... do you think a 40 Watt would be enough, or what? Next, the placement. I envision the Peltier device mounted vertically through a hole in the side of the case. It might be a plan to mount it in the ceiling, but remember that the LEDs take up most of the ceiling. Next, the heatsinks. I confess I'm not totally clear on this, but I "think" that 2 heatsinks-with-fans may be needed, with one sticking out the outside and the other inside the case. I went ahead and got 2 heatsink/fans from Newegg for supercheap ($1 after rebate), but they aren't really what I want. They're actually shaped to fit some AMD chip. What I think I need is a copper heatsink with a flat bottom a little bigger than the Peltier, and fins... and a heatsink fan attached... and some way to attach it to the Peltier, and through the case to the other heatsink. See? Simple... well it should be but I can find nothing. Next, the power supply. I know it has to be DC, but I don't know which brick to get. I did find a bunch of DC or AC Wall Transformers for sale at alltronics... around $10 or so. All that stuff would be enough... at least to test the cooling power. But if we want to go whole hog then the icing on the cake would be thermostatic control of the Peltier. Well, I throw that out in case one of you is sharp in that field.

( picture 6,7)I molding the finished eyes alginate and casting them in ultracal 30, ( picture 8) Ultracal 30 is the hardest plaster made. And place them in the sculpture. This will be for Proper registration for the eyes in the skull.( picture 9 )I had to sculpt face in Roma Plastilina Clay ( picture 10)and mold it in silicone( picture 11a,11b, 11 ) This molding process called a matrix mold . A layer of water clay cover theentire clay sculpture and Ultracal 30 is place on top of the water clay .After setup ,Its demolded and water clay removed .This water clay has made a space for the silicone.Matrix molda thin layer of water clay is place ( picture 12 ) and made the core A .This gave me the thickest for the skin .Molded core A in silicone and a thin layer of water clay is place in this mold also this made core B.And this gave the thickest of the Skull. Now I have 2 molds.( picture 13,14 )Mold 1 is the Skin moldMold 2 is the skull moldI casted foam rubber in mold 1 ( picture 15,)http://www.monstermakers.com/foam.htmlTo make the foam rubber skin337 gms. base67 grams foaming agent33 grams curing agent15 flow enhancer24 grams gelling agent4 grams ammoniaThe room temp73 degrees 40%Using a Sunbeam MixMaster Mixer1. This must be watched.( picture 17,18,19)I casted urethane Plastic from smoothon.com in mold 2.This gave me the Skull,The skull was trimed and dental acrylic teeth and eyes were place inside the skull .The mechanics were place using R/C servos. The skin was painted with PAX ( is a flexible paint). The skin was glue on rubber cement to the skull .And the hair was glued rubber cement also and placed.Hair is from National Fiber Technology ,Hair 1 was Blended Black and Brown modacrylic with White and Brown Mohair and Natural Goat hair. And hair 2 Black with gray texturized modacrylic with Yak and Horse hair. The PCMy motherboard (MSI KT6) and AMD 2500xp video card (MSI 6600)The case is LIAN LI PC-V800B .To make the lip sync move ,I used VSA , Visual Show Automation , http://www.brookshiresoftware.comThis aloud me to make a lip sync animation routine. Synchronize with graphical audio MP3 file. Not only that My Animatronic Mod looks Wicked ,It Talks Back.(Picture 1st floor) ( Picture 2nd floor)I designed the animatronic so I could repair it if needed, And the support pipe is like a swing arm so I can work on the PC too. By removing the back of the skull. Inside there are 2 floors the bottom floor has 6 servos :1 Head Up + Down2 Eyes Up + Down and left + right2 Eyelids1 Jaw2nd floor 7 servos3 right, left and center Brows1 Nose3 upper lip wireAnd also 2 servos are in the Jaw for lower lip wireand 1 left + right servo gimbal= 16 servosWhen uncovered ,Here is 32 feet of servo cable.(picture32 feet )The only thing connecting to the PC and the Animatronic is a modular cable (Lookslike a phone cable). Which is plug into a modular adapter that plug into the PC's serial port . The end of the modular cable plug in Mini SSCII Serial Servo Controller.you would be surprise how many people are into making monsters.
