analog demultiplexing?

Is it a good idea to use just a single DAC to produce 2 or more separate analog outputs? I do not need super fast updating rate, but I do need precision. My DAC is a old but pretty cool looking DAC71, of which I have like a handful. It has a 16 bit parallel interface (which is a REAL PAIN) and a CC output. Placing a small resistor on the output of that gives me a voltage range. To interface it to an arduino, I used two 74C164 shift registers so that I only use 2 pins on the arduino. (one for clock, the other for data). However, the DAC does not have an updating rate, it is kinda analog in that respect. Because of that, you can see all the garbage from the shift register outputs while data is being shifted in. My current solution to this problem was to use a spare TL601 analog switch and a 3rd wire from the arduino to "mask" the updating period when data is being shifted into the registers. This worked well, until the wire popped out and came into contact with +12V rail, killing arduino pin 10. :(  so sad, it was literally a brand new arduino clone... In a similar fashion that the output of a single ignition coil in a car is fed into a distributor to distribute voltage to the correct spark plugs, is it OK to use a few more analog switches to do some interlacing? Are there things that I potentially have not considered? My idea is that after data for, say, output A has been shifted into the 2 registers, the arduino will activate switch A and (through a buffer amp) charge a capacitor up to the same voltage, then turn switch A off while shifting in data for output B, then activating switch B to allow the capacitor to charge up to that voltage, and again the switches turn off to let new data for output A shift in, and the process repeats. The capacitors will "remember" what voltage they held during the off period, as sort of analog memory. I think the updating rate will take a hit, but oh well.

Digital or Analog Micrometer?

I've been looking into buying a micrometer, but having never owned (or for that matter, touched) a micrometer before, I am unsure of whether a digital or an analog one would be better. By better, I mean accurate, consistent, etc. Has anyone had any experience in buy a micrometer? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Analog LED Bargraph?

Does anyone know if something similar to the in-13 nixie tube exists in LED form?  I'm building something where space and energy are huge constraints, and I need something, well similar to the in-13 nixie in LED form, lol.  Any ideas?

Analog Fading LED

Hello - I am brand new to electronics but am trying to learn about BEAM and other art + science circuits. I am looking to make a small analog circuit to fade in and out a LED. I have looked online but have found a bunch of ones using a 555 timer or a PWM and other chips. I saw a reference to doing this slow fade in and out technique using only capacitors and resistors but have been unable to find a diagram. Can someone help me out. FWIW - I am looking to charge this using solar and am only looking to drive one LED. Ideally a days charge would last a few hours of fade in and out cycling with the cycle time being slow - somewhat like the Mac "Sleeping" LED. Thank you in advance.

Stuck analog stick?

Whenever I try to play with one of my original XBOX controllers, the left analog stick seems to be stuck in a down position. Physically, it's fine, but ingame my character is always moving backwards. I've tried multiple games and xboxes, but i can't get it to work. Any help?

Analog to Digital 16F628

I am a learner pic programmer and I am having some major grief trying to get the analog to digital (A2D) feature to work on my 16F628. All I would like to do is to be able to read in a value (either the most or least significant byte) and out put it again, just as a starting point for a project, the rest of which i can figure for myself. I have trauled the web for nigh on.. 3 hours and found few resources, but all were out of date or for a different chip. If anyone could help me either in terms of a bit of ASM code, some general guidence, or a link to a relevant tutorial that would be great. Thanks, Andy

Recording digitally with an analog camcorder

I recently came into possession of a mid-eighties Newvicon analog camcorder. It has RCA outputs for the video and audio (mono), and I'd like to record the output from this camcorder as digital. The idea I had initially was to use something like a Flip video camera (in order to keep it portable), but then I realized that the Flip doesn't have an RCA input... in fact, nothing I know of has an RCA input, unless I wanted to plug it into a computer or a DVD recorder, which negates the simplicity of it recording to a video file that can be dragged and dropped onto my desktop. The reason for wanting to salvage this camcorder and use it instead of just using the Flip is because the video quality is incredibly "eighties" - the color is slightly askew, and the sensitivity to light means that moving the camera suddenly causes ghosting, which, to me, is desirable for the look i'm going for. Personally, I find it fun and interesting to use old things like this instead of the new stuff. The only drawback is the simplicity (or lack thereof) in being able to post things immediately in this digital YouTube age. I'd like to keep it portable. I'd like to keep it simple. Any ideas on a camcorder, or even a "digital go between" that would record onto an SD card or USB drive? Does anything like this exist? If not, I'd like something like an SD card go between, as I have a 32 GB SDHC that would work great for this kind of project. This is the same model camera - the video outputs are located on a proprietary PSU, which isn't a problem for me to carry around, or have plugged into an extension cord.

Digital control analog synth?

Hi all! I have an idea buzzing round my head and I could really do with some guidance. I'd like to implement digital control over an analog synth so I could have presets saved on a microcontroller. The synth in question is Serge modular. All the info on various modules can be found on the link below. Ultimately I'd like to be able to save and recall knob and switch settings, not patching. I would like this to be at the highest resolution possible, so no MIDI. Ideally 16 or 14 bit resolution. I'm a beginner in this, although I do know how to solder, but I don't have the underlying technical knowledge. So, how doable is this? What do I need to consider? Has anyone done something similar? how do I fix an analog tv with a shrinkig picture?

It's an old zenith about 1995. The picture is shrinking from top to bottom so there is just a thin picture in the middle.if I hit the tv the picture will go back to normal for a very short time.

Storing Simple Analog Data

Hey guys! I just got this cool little temperature (LM35) and I had a small problem. I want to upload this sketch to my ATtiny45 and put it on my plane so I could get the temperature from above. Only problem is I have no way of seeing it. So is there a simple, easy solution to storing a couple of numbers? I though I could just set the temperature every 3 minutes to a variable, but if I turned the board off, the data would be lost. So I don't need to store tons of memory just a couple numbers! Thanks!

Analog to Digital Conversion on PIC18f4520

Hello there! I am building a custom digital weighing scale. My issue is not about how to do A2D, but on how to use the least amount of power doing so.  So imagine you just placed an object on the scale, i want the microcontroller to notice a change in weight and perform a2d on the load cell voltage. Now i only want to perform this a2d once(or a few times to make sure it works), saving the value in the register, and then i want the microcontroller to go back to sleep. The microcontroller will keep sleeping unless the object is removed or the weight changed, where the A2D works again for a couple of times, notes the value, and then sleeps again. So my question is, does the A2D have to keep working to notice a change in the weight? or can that happen some other way?   I basically want to make my battery last a long time, and i want to do that by using the A2D only when needed. On another note, does a2d even use up alot of power? If i keep it running would it consume alot of my battery? If things are unclear please ask. I'm afraid i didn't articulate well. Thanks!

I was hoping to learn how to make a machine that would allow me to put it down, push a  button and no longer hear beyond it.  it would be ideal for doing interviews at conventions.  I was also hoping to  have it made so theres no computers involved, just older electronics, so it would, in theory use less power.

Analog text clock, help needed

Hi everyone.I'm pretty new to DIY'ing and I want to make my own analog text-based clock.The idea is to make it write "the time is [five minutes past] [three]" in 5 minute intervals. I figured if I made two round plates with text rotated for every 30 degrees and make them rotate under a bigger square, then my only concern would be to make a rotation for every 5 minute on the first wheel, and every hour on the second.That's where I need your help :)If I'm to buy a standard clock movement (http://www.clockworks.com/quartz.html), then how could I make the right corrections to it so my plates/wheels would rotate, so the text would be fixed in a square instead of moving slowly around?I hope I'm explaining myself clearly - the end result would look like this:The time is [five past] [three]The time is [ten past] [three]Drawing attached - in Danish, but I hope you get the picture.And don't mind about "o'clock" in the end for 00 minutes - we don't say that in my language, so that's not a problem.Any suggestions?

How do I use arduino's analog input? Answered

I'm building a 'time fountain' and i'm planning to make the arduino know how many droplets of water are falling each second. My ideia was to get two wires, get them really close and when there was a drop of water the circuit would close. The problem is, how do i get arduino to get readings right out of this?                        o (droplet) (positive) ---- ---- (analog input)

Is there a way to broadcast analog television on a non-commercial scale?

Basically what I'm asking is if there is a way that I could broadcast a Television signal from my home, without having to build a station. I was wondering if there could be a way to modify a HAM radio system or something along those lines to broadcast the system, Or if there is some other means by which i could take a signal and broadcast it.

I have this handheld analog TV and I wondered if there was any use for it. A friend gave it to me he bought it just after the analog to digital conversion. It works and is brand new. How can I get from HDTV optical digital to analog volume controlled earphones??

My Toshiba HDTV has only one audio output, Digital Optical. I am hard of hearing and need to use earphones with volume control to listen while others are in the room. I believe a small, single purpose audio amp with digital, optical input and maximum volume analog output would do the job. No one builds such a device. The ones available have multiple options and resulting high price. I know how to read, BUT NOT DESIGN, circuits. I would prefer a design that would work off of a standard available "wall wart"/ Can anyone provide such schematic?

Audio Priority Switching Circuit. Can not find a schematic that will fit my need

I have searched but came up empty. Here is the need. 2 audio lines coming in. 1 is on all the time. when audio is sensed on line 2, it will reduce (or turn off) line 1 allowing line 2 to take priority. Then when line 2 stops, (mobile radio traffic) it switches back to line 1. The challenges: Small as possible (and yet I can still solder together) runs on 5-9V DC Adjustable gain on inputs Sensitivity adjustment on "switching" function Of the hundreds of circuits I have looked at, It seems to be a fairly simple task with a FET ......  I can build it, but the design portion is a to much math for me..lol  A 3 audio switching circut would be AWESOME!!! Anyone seen anything out there that will help me in my search??? Thanks, Steve

The number of eligible entries for Sponsor's recently completed contests generally has ranged from approximately forty (40) to approximately six-hundred fifty (650), and generally has averaged approximately one-hundred fifty (150), but Sponsor cannot predict or guarantee any specific number of eligible entries for the Contest. SECTION B – ADDITIONAL TERMS FOR THIS CONTEST   General Conditions. By entering the Contest, each entrant agrees to abide by the terms of these Rules and by the decisions of Sponsor and the Judges, which shall be made in all cases in their sole and absolute discretion and are final and binding on all matters relating to the Contest. These Rules are a legally binding contract, with equivalent effect to a private contract between each entrant and Sponsor. The Contest is void where prohibited by law The Contest is governed by Sponsor's Terms [https://www.instructables.com/tos.html] and Privacy Policy [https://www.instructables.com/about/privacy.jsp]and other policies (collectively, the “Policies”) pertaining to the Sponsor Site, although the Rules will govern any conflict between the Rules and the Sponsor’s Terms or the Rules and the Privacy Policy. Exclusions from Eligibility. Employees of Sponsor, any Co-Sponsor, or their respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, partners, suppliers, or advertising or promotional agencies (including without limitation any Judges who are employees of Sponsor, any Co-Sponsor or any of their respective parents, subsidiaries, or affiliates), as well as members of their households or their immediate families (i.e., spouses, parents and children), may submit entries in the Contest, but any such entries are for information and entertainment purposes only and are not eligible to be considered for the purpose of selecting finalists or winners. Judges who are not employees of Sponsor, any Co-Sponsor or any of their respective parents, subsidiaries, or affiliates, are not eligible to enter or win, nor are members of their households or their immediate families (i.e., spouses, parents and children). Notwithstanding the foregoing, Sponsor shall have no liability to any entrant or any other person in the event that Sponsor inadvertently awards a prize to any non-eligible person(s). In addition, each entrant acknowledges and accepts that Sponsor may be prohibited by applicable law from permitting entry by or awarding a prize to any person falling into one or more of the following prohibited categories: (a) a national or resident of Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Sudan, Syria or any other country for which trade with the United States has been prohibited or restricted by any statute, regulation, order, rule, treaty, or other law of the United States or any other applicable jurisdiction in any manner that would prevent the awarding or delivery of any prize to the entrant; (b) a person on the U.S. Table of Denial Orders, Entity List, List of Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons, or any other similar list of any applicable jurisdiction, or any person affiliated with any person or entity on any such list; (c) an official or representative of any foreign government; or (d) any other person to whom the awarding or delivery of any prize would violate any applicable statute, regulation, order, rule, treaty, or other law or any of Sponsor's policies (See: https://www.instructables.com/about/privacy.jsp). If an entrant falls into any of the above prohibited categories, such entrant is not eligible to win any prizes. Entry. Multiple entries are permitted, but only one entry per entrant can win a prize in the Contest. Entrants must be registered members of the Sponsor Site to enter the Contest. Registering for a Sponsor Site membership account for purposes of entering the Contest is free of charge. Entries can be the work of more than one person, but for purposes of the Contest, each entry will belong to the “Primary Author” named in the entry, regardless of the number of contributors to that entry. For winning entries, Sponsor will award the applicable prize to the named entrant only, except in the case of a minor, to such minor’s named parent or legal guardian only unless specific consent from such parent or legal guardian to award the prize to such minor in accordance has been obtained by way of a duly signed Winner’s Declaration and Release (See Section A.7 above), and will not be responsible or liable for apportioning any prize among contributors to a winning entry. Upon submission, all entries become subject to the Policies (including without limitation the provisions regarding ownership and use of user submissions as stated in Sponsor’s Terms [https://www.instructables.com/tos.html]) and further described in Section B.15 (“Advertising and Marketing”). Notwithstanding the foregoing, entries to the Contest shall only be valid after the entry is accepted by Sponsor, and its acceptance occurs at Sponsor’s location in the United States.  Entries will not be acknowledged or returned. Entrants are permitted to modify or update an entry after submission, but are not permitted to do so after the Deadline. Entries may remain posted on the Contest page of the Sponsor Site indefinitely following the Deadline, but Sponsor reserves the right to delete entries from the Contest page after the Contest ends, in its discretion, and Sponsor reserves the right to delete entries from the Contest page and other pages of the Sponsor Site, at any time in its discretion, if such entries infringe or may infringe any third party’s rights. Entries may not be created or submitted through any software-generated, robotic, programmed, script, macro, or other automated method. Sponsor and Co-Sponsor will have no responsibility for, and will have the right to refuse in its discretion, any entries that have been tampered with, or entries that are misdirected, incomplete, non-conforming, corrupt, lost, late, or ineligible, whether due to Internet or e-mail server failure or otherwise. Proof of transmission of an entry shall not constitute proof of receipt. It is each entrant’s responsibility to keep Sponsor informed of any changes to entrant’s contact or other information during the Contest. Use of Personal Information. Registering for an account with the Sponsor Site, which is required to enter the Contest, may require each entrant to submit entrant’s name, e-mail address, age or date of birth, and other contact details, and in the case of a minor, contact details for a parent or legal guardian for purposes of obtaining proof of parental consent, if Sponsor elects to do so. For further information concerning how Sponsor handles personal information, as well as provisions on confidentiality and the cases in which Sponsor may be entitled to disclose entrant’s information to third parties or upon request of an authority, consult Sponsor’s Privacy Policy [https://www.instructables.com/about/privacy.jsp], which is incorporated herein. Additional Entry Requirements. Each entry must comply in all respects with the Policies, including without limitation all requirements for user submissions, as stated in the Terms and Conditions of Use [https://www.instructables.com/tos.html] for the Sponsor Site. Without limiting that requirement, each entry also must comply with the following: Each entry must be entirely the original work of the persons identified in the entry; If persons other than the entrant have contributed to an entry, the entrant must have the written permission from each contributor prior to submitting the entry; Entries must not have been published prior to the Start Date; Entries must not have been entered in more than two other contests of Sponsor; Entries must not contain anything that is or may be: (i) threatening, harassing, degrading or hateful; (ii) defamatory; (iii) fraudulent or tortious; (iv) obscene, indecent or otherwise objectionable; (v) deemed to cause feelings of disharmony, enmity, hatred or hostility between different religious or racial groups; (vi) protected by copyright, trademark, patents, utility models, design patents or other proprietary right without the express prior written consent of the owner of such right; or (vii) dangerous or potentially dangerous, or that would encourage dangerous behavior from viewers, such as use of explosives and/or harmful substances; or (vii) contrary to governmental policies of any country whose residents are eligible to enter the Contest. Entries must provide proper safety instructions, as applicable, such as with respect to the use of knives, cutting devices and other tools; and Entries must not contain any material that would give rise to criminal or civil liability or that encourages conduct that constitutes a criminal offense. Judging Process. The winner(s) will be determined by the Judges, who will apply the Criteria to evaluate entries. The entries with the highest score(s) will be selected as the winner(s), and the number and type of winners will be as identified in Section A above. The Judges have the right to disqualify any entry that is not in compliance with these Rules, in the Judges' discretion. In the event that a winning entry is disqualified, the next-highest scoring entry will be selected as the alternate winner.  In the event that one or more of the identified Judges is unavailable, Sponsor reserves the right to substitute Judges of comparable qualification, to be determined by Sponsor in its discretion. The Contest is entirely skill-based and contains no elements based on chance. The standards applied during the judging process focuses on assessing each entry’s properties. By the mere submission of an entry, an entrant acquires no automatic right to be awarded a prize, nor any other right except for the right to have such entry reviewed and evaluated subject to these Rules.   Prize Terms. All values are stated in United States Dollars, Euros and British Pounds Sterling, as indicated. If a stated prize is unavailable, Sponsor has the right to substitute one or more items of equal or greater value, in its discretion. No prize is, and the winner(s) have no right to claim that any prize is, exchangeable, transferable, or redeemable for cash. The winner(s) will be solely responsible for all expenses related to the receipt and use of all prize(s) other than those expenses expressly included in the description of the prize(s) in Section A above. The winner(s) will be solely responsible for complying with any and all applicable statutes, laws (including, without limitation, common law, if applicable), rules and regulations and for bearing any personal income, VAT, withholding taxes, customs duties, or other taxes, fees, insurance, surcharges or other costs relating to receiving, claiming or collecting any prize.   Winner(s) are hereby informed of the liability to pay all taxes on the prize(s) received; such taxes shall be paid by the winner(s). Each winner shall be responsible for reporting his or her individual income tax generated from the prize to relevant tax authorities on his or her own and, for residents subject to tax obligations on the prize by any country, shall promptly submit to Sponsor a tax payment proof showing that such tax has been fully paid. If the winner fails to submit such proof within a reasonable period of time as required by Sponsor, Sponsor reserves the right to disqualify the winner from entitlement to the prize and the winner shall be deemed to have waived his or her right to claim the prize and shall be further obligated, upon Sponsor’s request, to return the prize to Sponsor at his or her own cost. THE PRIZE(S) WILL BE GIVEN AWAY BY SPONSOR AND ANY CO-SPONSOR(S) “AS IS.” SPONSOR AND ANY CO-SPONSORS DO NOT MAKE, AND EXPRESSLY DISCLAIM, ANY WARRANTY, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY, REGARDING ANY PRIZE OR PORTION THEREOF, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION ANY IMPLIED OR STATUTORY WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT. SOME JURISDICTIONS MAY NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OF IMPLIED WARRANTIES, CONSUMER GUARANTEES AND SIMILAR RIGHTS, IN WHICH CASE SUCH EXCLUSION SHALL APPLY ONLY TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW IN THE RELEVANT JURISDICTION. WITHOUT LIMITATION, TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, ALL WARRANTIES AND REPRESENTATIONS, IN RELATION TO THE PRIZES, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED BY STATUTE, LAW (INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, COMMON LAW, IF APPLICABLE), RULE, REGULATION, OR OTHERWISE, ARE HEREBY EXCLUDED. Announcement; Award of Prize(s). The winner(s) will be notified by e-mail within seven (7) days of selection. The winner(s) (and, if a winner is a minor, the winner’s parent or legal guardian) may be required to sign a Winner’s Declaration and Release which includes a declaration of eligibility, grant of publicity rights and a liability release, to the extent not prohibited by law, prior to receipt of a prize. The prize(s) will be awarded by way of delivery to Winner’s designated valid delivery address set forth on the Winner’s Declaration and Release. Unless otherwise specified in Section A, and provided that direct shipment costs by mail or parcel post (expressly excluding import duties and other duties or taxes, which are the winner’s sole responsibility) to Winner’s designated valid delivery address shall be borne by Sponsor, provided, however, if delivery is declined or fails by reason of winner’s failure to timely accept receipt or pay appropriate import duties and other duties or taxes) then the winner will be deemed to have declined acceptance of the prize and Sponsor reserves the right to reclaim the prize whereupon the prize will be returned to Sponsor and winner will no longer be eligible to receive the prize. The winner(s) may be required to provide Sponsor with a social security number, taxpayer identification number, or other identification or account number (if applicable) for tax purposes, and will provide Sponsor with all other information as may be required for Sponsor to comply with all applicable laws in connection with the award of any prize(s) to the winner(s). The winner(s) also may be required to provide Sponsor with proof that he or she is the Authorized Account Holder of the e-mail address associated with the winning entry. An “Authorized Account Holder” is the natural person who is assigned to an e-mail address by an Internet access provider or other organization responsible for assigning e-mail addresses to the domain associated with an e-mail address. In the event of a dispute, an entry will be deemed to have been submitted by the Authorized Account Holder of the e-mail address submitted at the time of entry. Failure to respond to a winner announcement, or return any required declarations or releases within fourteen (14) days (or any longer time specified by Sponsor in the applicable winner announcement) or to comply with any of the foregoing may result in disqualification and the selection of an alternate winner. It is Sponsor’s policy to assist U.S. government employees in meeting their obligations under their standards of ethical conduct; any prize(s) won in violation of those Standards should not be accepted and should be returned at Sponsor’s expense or destroyed. Without limitation, Sponsor shall not be liable for any failure to deliver any prizes due to any winner’s failure to accept delivery, to meet any of his or her obligations hereunder or due to the submission of any false, inaccurate or misleading information. Representations. By entering the Contest, each entrant represents and warrants that: (a) the entrant meets all eligibility requirements of the Contest; (b) in entering and participating in the Contest, the entrant has complied and will comply in all respects with these Rules, the Policies, and all applicable statutes, laws (including, without limitation, common law, if applicable), rules and regulations; and (c) the information provided in the entrant’s entry, including without limitation all contact information, is true, accurate, and complete in all respects. Assumption of Risk. By taking any action to create an entry for the Contest, each entrant, on his or her own behalf and on behalf of his or her personal representatives, heirs, executors, and assigns, acknowledges and agrees that: (a) ENTRANT AND HIS OR HER PERSONAL REPRESENTATIVES, HEIRS, EXECUTORS, AND ASSIGNS HAVE THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE CREATION OF THE ENTRY, WHICH IS DESIGNED AND CREATED BY THE ENTRANT FOLLOWING HIS OR HER OWN DECISION AND INITIATIVE DEPENDINGG ON THE WAY, IN HIS OR HER SOLE DISCRETION ENTERANT DECIDES TO CREATE SUCH ENTRY, AND EVEN THOUGHT THE CONTEST DOES NOT REQUIRE OR OTHERWISE ENCOURAGE DANGEROUS BEHAVIOR, THERE MAY BE DANGER AND RISK OF BODILY INJURY, DEATH, OR PROPERTY DAMAGE INVOLVED IN CREATING AN ENTRY; (b) THESE RISKS AND DANGERS MAY ARISE FROM FORESEEABLE OR UNFORESEEABLE CAUSES; (c) SUCH ENTRANT AND HIS OR HER PERSONAL REPRESENTATIVES, HEIRS, EXECUTORS, AND ASSIGNS ASSUME ALL RISKS AND RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY PERSONAL INJURY, DEATH, PROPERTY DAMAGE, OR OTHER LOSS ARISING OUT OF THE CREATION OF ANY ENTRY, WHETHER CAUSED BY NEGLIGENCE OR ANY OTHER CAUSE; and (d) Subject to applicable law, such entrant and his or her personal representatives, heirs, executors, and assigns are relinquishing any and all rights he, she, or they now have or may have in the future to sue or take any other action against Sponsor, any Co-Sponsor, the prize manufacturers, any other entities involved in the administration of the Contest, each of their respective parents, subsidiaries, and affiliates, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees, agents, and representatives (the “Sponsor Parties”) on the basis of any injury, death, damage, or other loss that may be suffered arising from any action taken in the creation of any entry, including but not limited to claims based on allegations of negligence by any of the Sponsor Parties or use of any machinery or materials. Without limitation, Sponsor Parties shall have no liability to any entrant or any other person in the event the entry or any acts or omissions of the entrant violates any of these Rules. Release. To the maximum extent permitted by law, by entering the Contest, each entrant releases and holds harmless the Sponsor Parties from any and all responsibility, liability, damages (including, without limitation, direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, punitive, statutory, and other damages), losses, costs, or expenses of any kind arising out of or relating to: (a) entry or participation in the Contest, including but not limited to disputes among individuals claiming to have contributed to any winning entry; (b) any violation by the entrant of these Rules, the Policies, or applicable laws; (c) misappropriation, infringement, or other violation of any copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, right of publicity, privacy, or other legal or contractual right of any person attributable to entrant or any entry submitted by entrant; (d) the acceptance, possession, receipt, or use of any prize or any item purchased with any prize (e.g., if the prize includes a gift card); (e) any entries or votes that have been tampered with or that are misdirected, incomplete, non-conforming, corrupt, lost, late, or ineligible; (f) any problems or technical malfunctions (including but not limited to errors, omissions, interruptions, deletions, defects, or delays in operation or transmission) of any computer, telephone, modem, cable, satellite, network, hardware, online system, server, software, or other equipment or provider, including any incorrect, incomplete, garbled or jumbled information resulting therefrom; (g) any Internet traffic congestion or website accessibility or delays; (h) printing or typographical errors in any Contest-related materials; or (i) any other technical or human error that may occur in connection with the Contest (the “Causes”).  If anyone makes any claim against any of the Sponsor Parties arising out of or relating to any of the Causes attributable to the entrant, the entrant will pay for any damages, losses, liabilities, costs, penalties, and expenses, including without limitation attorneys’ and experts’ fees and costs, incurred in connection with such claim. WITHOUT LIMITING THE GENERALITY OF THE FOREGOING, THE SPONSOR PARTIES SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY LOST PROFITS OR ANY SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, INDIRECT, PUNITIVE, EXEMPLARY, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF THE CONTEST, HOWSOEVER CAUSED, WHETHER ARISING IN STATUTE, TORT (INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, NEGLIGENCE) CONTRACT, OTHER LEGAL THEORY OR OTHERWISE, AND ALL SUCH DAMAGES ARE HEREBY DISCLAIMED AND EXCLUDED. SOME JURISDICTIONS MAY NOT ALLOW THE LIMITATION OR EXCLUSION OF LIABILITY FOR DAMAGES AND OTHER LIABILITY (INCLUDING INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES) IN WHICH CASE SUCH LIMITATION OR EXCLUSION SHALL APPLY ONLY TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, RULE, STATUTE OR REGULATION IN THE RELEVANT JURISDICTION. NOTHING IN THESE TERMS EXCLUDE LIABILITY FOR FRAUD, OR FOR PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH CAUSED BY NEGLIGENCE TO THE EXTENT SUCH EXCLUSION IS PROHIBITED BY APPLICABLE LAW. Misconduct. Sponsor reserves the right, in its discretion, to disqualify any entrant who: (a) tampers with the entry or voting process, the operation of the Contest, the Sponsor Site, or affiliated websites; (b) acts in an unsporting or disruptive manner, or with intent to annoy or harass another person; or (c) is otherwise in violation of these Rules, the Policies, or any applicable laws. Termination. Sponsor reserves the right to suspend, modify, or terminate the Contest at any time for any reason, in its discretion, including without limitation in the event of fraud, abuse, tampering, technical, administrative, financial, or other difficulties. In such cases, Sponsor will post a notice on the Contest page of the Sponsor Site. Should the Contest terminate prior to selection of the winner, Sponsor will announce an alternate means of awarding the prize on the Contest page of the Sponsor Site. Any entrant may withdraw from the Contest at any time by contacting Sponsor by email at [service@instructables.com] or by phone at (01-510-473-7626) or by mail at the address identified in Section B.18 (“Winner’s List; Mailing List”) specifying the name of this Contest and any other relevant information.   Advertising and Marketing. By entering the Contest, and in consideration of Sponsor’s potential review and evaluation of his or her entry, each entrant grants to Sponsor the non-exclusive right to use his or her entry as provided in the Policies, including without limitation the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of Use [https://www.instructables.com/tos.html] regarding ownership and use of user submissions. WITHOUT LIMITING THE FOREGOING, TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, BY ENTERING THE CONTEST, EACH ENTRANT CONSENTS, AND WARRANTS THAT IT HAS OBTAINED THE LEGALLY-BINDING WRITTEN CONSENT OR OTHER LEGALLY BINDING AUTHORIZATION (INCLUDING WITH REGARD TO THE USE AND MANAGEMENT OF COPYRIGHTS IN ALL CREATED CONTENT) OF EVERY CONTRIBUTOR TO THE ENTRY (INDIVIDUALS WHOSE NAME, LIKENESS, PROPERTY, RESULTS AND PROCEEDS APPEAR IN THE ENTRY), TO THE USE BY SPONSOR, ANY CO-SPONSOR, OR ANY THIRD PARTY CHOSEN BY SPONSOR OR ANY CO-SPONSOR, OF ANY AND ALL INFORMATION (INCLUDING PERSONAL INFORMATION), DRAWINGS, TEXT, PHOTOS, IMAGES, VOICES, VIDEOS, OR OTHER MATERIAL CONTAINED IN AN ENTRY OR OTHERWISE PROVIDED BY SUCH ENTRANT RELATED TO THE CONTEST FOR ADVERTISING AND MARKETING PURPOSES. Otherwise, each entrant retains whatever rights it may have in each entry to the extent provided in the Policies. The Sponsor, at its discretion, may require entrants to provide evidence of such written consents or other legally binding authorization. To the maximum extent permitted by law, by accepting a prize, a winner consents on his or her own behalf, to the print and online publication of the winner’s user name, stated country of residence and winning entry as part of the official winner’s list on the Instructables Site (and to submit this information, along with the winner’s first and last name, address , phone, email or other contact information to governmental agencies if required by applicable laws) without additional compensation other than the consideration specified in this Section 15 (Advertising and Marketing) for the entire protection term of the rights concerned and for all methods and means of exploitation. Each entrant and any other contributor whose personal information is being so used by Sponsor may request access to his or her personal information held by Sponsor and that Sponsor correct the data if it is inaccurate or delete the data if Sponsor is not required to retain it by law or for legitimate business purposes. Access, correction, deletion requests or withdrawal of consents can be made by contacting Sponsor by email at [service@instructables.com] or by phone at (01-510-473-7626) or by mail at the address identified in Section B.18 (“Winner’s List; Mailing List”), however, no consents will apply retroactively to any entrant’s personal information used prior to Sponsor’s receipt of any consent withdrawal. Other than as set forth herein, Sponsor will treat any personal information supplied by entrants in connection with the Contest in accordance with Sponsor’s Privacy Policy [https://www.instructables.com/about/privacy.jsp], as modified by these Rules. Governing Law; Dispute Resolution. By entering the Contest, entrants agree that these Rules will be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of (a) Switzerland if the entrant’s principal place of residence is in a country in Europe, Africa or the Middle East, (b) Singapore if the entrant’s principal place of residence is in a country in Asia, Oceania or the Asia-Pacific region, or (c) the State of California (and, to the extent controlling, the federal laws of the United States) if the entrant’s principal place of residence is in a country in the Americas (including the Caribbean) or any other country not specified in this Section 16 (Governing Law; Dispute Resolution); provided, however, that in respect of all claims, actions and disputes brought by any of the Sponsor Parties, these Rules and shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of California (and, to the extent controlling, the federal laws of the United States). The laws of such jurisdictions shall govern without reference to the conflicts-of-laws rules thereof. The UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods and the Uniform Computer Information Transaction Act shall not apply to (and are excluded from the laws governing) these Rules. In addition, by entering the Contest, entrants agree that any claim, action or dispute arising under or relating to this Agreement will be brought exclusively in (and the parties will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of) the Superior Court of the State of California, County of Marin, or the United States District Court for the Northern District of California in San Francisco, except that (other than with respect to claims, actions or disputes brought by any of the Sponsor Parties) if the entrant’s principal place of residence is in (a) a country in Europe, Africa or the Middle East, any such claim or dispute will be brought exclusively in (and the parties will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of) the courts of Switzerland, or (b) a country in Asia, Oceania or the Asia-Pacific region, any such claim or dispute will be brought exclusively in (and the parties will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of) the courts of Singapore. By entering the Contest, each entrant submits to the jurisdiction of those courts and waives any objection to those courts, whether on the basis of jurisdiction, venue, inconvenience of the forum, or otherwise.  Notwithstanding anything to the contrary, nothing will prevent any of the Sponsor Parties from bringing an action for infringement of intellectual property rights in any country where such infringement is alleged to occur. Miscellaneous. increase analog read resolution arduino?

Is there a simple, hardware based way to use two analogRead pins on an arduino together for higher resolution?  I have a project that only needs two analog values, but the more accurate the value the better.  I do NOT want an external ADC, I am aware they exist, but I don't have time to get it shipped.  It doesn't need to be fast, or multiply the pins (just a value of 0-2047 would be fine, but 12 or 20 bit equivalent would be better).  Preferably something with just resistors and diodes, if that exists, but more components is okay too.  I was thinking something like a resistor-divider or something, but I can't figure out a simple way for that to work.   Again, I do NOT want a new ADC, I know how they works and that I can buy one, but I prefer just using the built-in one because there's no interface issue.  No matter how simple it "really is" I ALWAYS have a problem getting two components to communicate.    I'm using an UNO

Solid Color Analog LED strip

I just want to make a backlit box with a logo on it. I'm looking for the backlighting to be green. Every single video or tutorial I find on Analog LED strips jumps straight into using a controller or an Arduino. Can I not just use a power supply? Can I use resistors or something of the like to send x amount of power to r, g, or b for the color I want? Is there not just a simple LED strip guide out there?

Converting digital headset to analogic one

Hello! :D Some time ago I have bought a Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000 digital, USB headset. Hmm...maybe it was not the best choice, but I want to convert it into an analogic one. In theory it is simple: I only have to remove the incorporated digital-analogic analogic-digital signal converter and connect the 2 wires of the headset to 2 Jack 3.5mm, one for the microphone and one for the speakers. Reason: my laptop's sound card is much better than the headset's built-in one. I am pretty sure that this converter is located in the volume control box: www.turbozone.ro/fotografii/Casti/Microsoft_JUG-00003.jpg But things may not be as easy as they seem. Or are they? As far as I have heard, the cable from the volume control unit and the headset consists in 2 wires. The cable of my old cheap analogic headset consists in 2 wires too. It shouldn't be complicated: the microphone wire get tied with the microphone wire and the speakers wire get tied with the speakers wire. But when I opened the old cheap analogic headset I noticed that each of the 2 wires branches out in 2 respectively 3 separate wires when they reach the headset: a blue one, a red one, a yellow one, a green one and a blue-yellow one. This is quite strange, isn't it? Or...do I have to worry about that?; should I simply tie the 4 wires together - old&cheap; analogic speaker wire with LifeChat's speaker wire and old&cheap; analogic microphone wire with LifeChat's microphone wire? I don't want to do somethig wrong.^^ Thanks in advance. :)

rgb led and 1 analog input? Answered

Im trying to make an rgb led light up in different colors to based on the analog input, for instance a "potentiometer" or equivelent like the lm324 controlling the input causes the input to go higher the red turns on then green and then blue progressively, i have some code worked up but am willing to work from scratch again, im working with the lm324 op-amp and an arduino w/328

Analog and Digital inputs over serial?

Good day, question i am building a controller for my robot and i need to send the inputs(analog/digital) by xbee to my robot. now i am not good with programming i get stuck with the first line.... i want to know how i can program it to send it values over serial from xbee tot xbee on robot i didn't get anything work so far, maybe you guys cant help me with a start? Inputs -> arduino -> serial -> Xbee -> Xbee(receiver) -> arduino -> outputs(servo, lights, motors, steppenmotors) the inputs on the controller are 8 switches(digital) and 6 analoge joysticks! Prototype robot is pictured on the picture it had for now a arduino relay shield to control the motors but it will be change to a motor controller(I don't have one yet) any type is possible!

How to test an analog tv screen ?

I have a vega 542 TV that I recently purchased at a flea market . I took the outer cover off to find a mass of circuits, all labelled in Russian that I have no idea what they do. This small tv has an analog screen which I have no idea how to test. When I connect a power supply that is 3 v lower than recommend and was rewarded with a burst of static from the speaker and a high pitch hum from the circuits but a completely black screen. If you do anything that can help me get this working I'll be very pleased.

Need schematic: 60-LED analog seconds-only clock

I built a "barn-door" tracker to take photos of planets and stars so that they are tracked (i.e they appear as dots, not trails). My tracker can be seen in the first two photos here: http://www.tjimaging.com/ted/astro.htm These devices depend upon the user manually turning a knob at exactly one rpm for as many as fifteen minutes. This is (very) tedious, but gets good results. The biggest difficulty is in keeping the proper rate of knob-turning. I use a stopwatch timer and have a pointer on the knob so I can manually match each second as it goes by. This has to be done in the *dark*, though, for obvious reasons! So there's an additional problem of lighting the dial and stopwatch. My idea would be to affix a steady red LED to the end of the knob pointer and to use an analog clock consisting of 60 red LEDs arranged in a circle around the knob. Only one LED would be lit at a time, starting at 12 o'clock position, and advancing one LED at a time, clockwise, and keeping each LED lit for one second. This arrangement would let me simply match the knob's steady LED with the currently-lit one and thus makes manual matching of the "second hand" visually easy. I expect a 555 timer circuit (powered by battery, not A/C, for portability) could handle this task, but I don't know enough about electronics to know for sure. I'd like to keep the cost lower than it would be if an Arduino-based circuit were used. I've also never made a custom printed circuit board, but I'm game to try after building a successful breadboard. I just need a schematic!  Thanks, all.

i am trying to make a remote controlled truck?

Well the idea is to use a smartphone and get skype working on that smart phone why skype? video and mic + audio(analog input) from skype as the signal to control the arduino board(ie i will have to make a simple application which will make specific distinct sound when i press the keys) well the reason why i am using audio is because i cant think of other way to control the arduino from the smartphone well i have heard of people hooking up the arduino using otg cable ,but i am exactly  not sure how that works  WELL THE DESIGN IS STILL ON PAPER ,I STILL DONT KNOW IF THE ANALOG THING WILL ACTUALLY WORK! i would like suggestion from people!!!!

I have usb cables, and AV cables. Can I just splice them somehow to connect VCR to Computer?

I want to convert VHS tapes to DVD's.  There is freeware to use if I can get my signal to computer.  AV / USB cables are expensive.  Is there a way I can splice the usb and AV cables I have to do this?

Does anybody know of a Potentiometer that can be set digitaly but operate passively?

I wonder if this technology exists. Imagine the following situation: During setup/calibration I can power the circuit and "tune" my potentiometer using some type of digital interface. (e.g. I2C) However, during operation the device is fully passive and will not have a source of power. Thus, the potentiometer would need to "remember" the settings and operate passively. Currently I use standard potentiometers, but tuning them manually is way too cumbersome and not practical. Ideas?

Help making a basic circuit involving an analog VU meter.

I am trying to build a contraption involving an analog VU meter a microphone and a power source so i can measure noise levels around me and put it into a sweet steam punk arm contraption I have plans for. I would like the design to be a microphone added into a VU meter and then the power source to power it up but I have no idea what components i need. I can build stuff to a circuit plan but have no experience in designing a proper circuit.

Can I have permission to get rid of my TV? Answered

+ It's analog, with a 13" (no, really, 13 inches diagonally) screen. + I haven't plugged it in since I moved a year ago: I rely on Hulu and Netflix on my (bigger-screened) iMac. + If I really wanted to watch broadcast TV in the future, I could get a TV-tuner-thingo for the iMac (for perhaps not too much more than the cost of a digital-to-analog converter). + My apartment is sub-dinky, and I need to get rid of anything extraneous. + The thrift store down the street is actually taking donations of crt-based analog TV's for free (i.e., no disposal charge). So, what's stopping me? ...I'm not sure: - Some nagging fear that I'm forgetting some vitally important function that only a 1996-model Toshiba Shrimpscreen can perform? - Or maybe just a perception that it'd be Un-American not to have a TV set somewhere in the house? How do i make a coil? Answered

The might sound a bit childish but i want to know about a coil. I am currently making a voltmeter(analog).I need to make a coil for it. I have a magnetic wire(around1.5 meters).Every time I make a coil out of it and supply it with power the battery shorts. I get no responce from the coil(like it does not attracts or repels a magnet or nail).So how do make a correct coil for my voltmeter and how do i know weather it responces.

Arduino Input

I am writing an Arduino program to read speaker inputs for a test station.  I need only to know when a speaker lead is on or off. This will be done by using the fade and balance.  Originally I was connecting the speaker leads to the analog inputs and could get a single line to work as a simple VU meter. Multiple lines gave issue.  Since I don't need to know the actual level, just whether they are on or off I'd like the speaker lead to trigger a transistor connected to a digital I/O pin on the Arduino.  Any thoughts or quick schematics on how to do this?

Sensor Help with Arduino

Hi all! I need help with trying to figure out datasheets. I was digging through my electronics when I found and LM35 sensor. So I looked up the datasheet but I couldn't find out how to convert the analog output to a temperature. I found an i'ble on how to do it but I want to know how to find that information in the datasheet so that next time I get something I'll be able to do it myself. I looked at all the curves and none of them seemed to be temperature vs. voltage. I also looked through the whole first part and couldn't find the multiplier. Also does that multiplier change with the amount of voltage you supply the LM35 with? Say I use 5 volts. Will it give a different reading over 4.5 volts? Controlling a servo with a Micro-controller?

So I decided to spend some time to make a "gimbal" in a very loose sense. Basically I was experimenting using a square wave oscillator to generate the correct PWM to have a servo rotate between 0 and 180 degrees when a tilt sensor is tripped. After some research multiple sites said having a 1ms pulse every 20ms would have it move to the 0 degree position. Great so I will make a oscillator pulses ~1ms on one side and 19ms on the other. However this does not seem to be working. I am curious if it is a fault in my math or if the tolerance on the parts I am using are just too wide to be any good. Here is a diagram of my set-up with the values a came up with. One spot that may be weak is that I just notice someone somewhere mentioned using 50Hz for the timing I just used that number when I calc my figures. Any feedback?  Also a side note is that I have been able to move the servo in one direction only and by accident ( in fact it's what inspired this project) when C1 & C2 were 2.2nF and the R1 & R2 were 10k potentiometers that I turned until something happened. Now that I am trying on purpose no results.

how can i transmit analog video signal?

For some application i need to transmit an analog video signal without cables, maybe through sound? or light/laser? is there some way that i can do it? i saw this instructable doing a similar thing: https://www.instructables.com/id/Transfer-Sound-on-a-Laser/ is the circuit capable of doing it with analog video signals? also, i know that when i transmit it in its analog form, losses will be significant. is it possible to transmit it in digital form and convert it back to analog? how?
